(2024·黑龙江哈尔滨·一模)Do you sometimes ignore your mom while chatting with friends If you’re a teen, that’s fairly 121 . And new researches may explain why so many adolescents 122 their mom’s voices.
Young kids’ brains are very tuned in to their mothers’ voices. But as they grow up, everything 123 . Teenagers’ brains are more tuned in to strangers’ voices. This obvious 124 usually happens between ages 13 and 14. That’s when teenagers are in the course of puberty (青春期), a roughly decade-long transition into adulthood.
Researchers scanned the brains of 7 to 16-year-olds as they listened to things said by their mothers or by unfamiliar women. The words were purely 125 : teebudieshawlt, keebudieshawlt and peebudieshawlt. As the kids listened, certain parts of their brains became 126 . This was especially true in brain regions that help us to 127 rewards and pay attention. That’s exactly as it should be. The experiments show that those parts of their brains react more strongly to the unfamiliar voices than to their mothers’.
These areas in the adolescent brains don’t stop 128 mom. It’s just that unfamiliar voices become more rewarding and worthy of attention. “As kids 129 , their survival depends less and less on maternal support. 130 , they rely more and more on their 131 —friends and others closer to their own age. So the brains need to begin paying more attention to that wider world. The brain seems to 132 new needs that come with adolescence.”
However, mothers’ voices still have special power, especially in times of 133 . Studies also showed that levels of stress hormones (荷尔蒙) 134 when stressed-out girls heard their moms’ voices on the phone.
So while both teens and their parents sometimes feel frustrated by missed messages, that’s okay. “That’s the way the 135 is wired, and there’s a good reason for it.”

(2024·黑龙江佳木斯·模拟预测)At age eleven, I was in middle school. As the oldest and my mom’s “grown up” girl, I had to keep my cool. But before Christmas, every chance I got, when I was 136 , I checked each present under the tree quietly. I read every tag (标签) and 137 every package, telling which present went to which person without even looking at the tags.
It had been a (n) 138 year for my family. When my mom looked at the simple presents, she sighed and warned us, “There won’t be as much for Christmas this year. Try not to be 139 .” Christmas had traditionally been a time for my parents to spoil (溺爱) us. In years past, the presents would pile up and I would hear the phrase “giving is better than receiving”, but thought whoever had said that must have been out of their mind. Getting presents was the whole 140 !
On that Christmas morning, we 141 waited in the hallway until Dad told us everything was ready. We rushed into the living room and let the wrapping paper fly. We made weak 142 to wait and watch other family members opened their presents, but as the time passed we lost our self-control.
“Here’s another one for you,” said Mom as she 143 me a package with my name written on the label in my mother’s handwriting. I looked at it, 144 . Having spent so much time examining the presents before Christmas, I 145 this one. It was my mom’s.
“Mom, I can’t...”
I was 146 by my mother’s eager, joyful look—a look I could not really understand. “Let’s see what it is, honey. Hurry and open it.” It was a blow dryer. Though it’s simple, to me it was so much more. Being a little girl, I was amazed. In my world, where receiving 147 giving, my mom’s act of selflessness was incomprehensible. Tears filled my eyes and I thought in disbelief about how much my mom must love me to 148 her Christmas.
I have always remembered that Christmas full of deep 149 . It had such an impact on me. As an adult, I can now 150 my mom’s actions—finding an even greater joy in her Christmas, because giving truly is better than receiving. My mom’s simple act meant the world to me.

(2024·广西·一模)I arrived in Lunenburg three weeks ago. It took a while to get 166 to the different way of life here. The main reason for coming here is to collect some of the 167 folk songs of Canada, but one of the other reasons why I come here 168 is that Lunenburg has been given a protected status in Canada. This means that its buildings, the design of the town, and even certain industries, have to be 169 . Even though that is the case, there are still many examples of 170 life, including the ability to send emails.
Lunenburg only really has one community. Most of the 171 know each other and few new people are moving in. Actually, more young people are leaving than are coming in, leaving a(n) 172 population. The people I want to speak to the most are those 173 the fishing industry.
So far, I have made friends with a couple called John and Mary. They both have relatives who worked on the fishing trade, 174 over a hundred years.
Fishing became a key part of Lunenburg in the mid-19th century. Because it 175 the Atlantic, it was an important port for the whole of Nova Scotia. In the 1920s, it became an important place for shipbuilding. Then, during the First and Second World Wars, it was used to 176 ships and submarines. As a result, a lot of different 177 stayed there for a while.
John told me that many of the folk songs he learnt as a 178 were from all over Europe because soldiers would sing them in the public house where his parents entertained them. Luckily for me, both John and Mary also have a very good 179 for the old songs that their grandparents taught them. Some of these folk songs are reckoned to be over one hundred and fifty years old. Besides, I went to a 180 yesterday where I heard a local singer sing new songs about the dangers of fishing.
There is plenty more history to learn about this unique town.

(2024·贵州安顺·一模)I had graduated from college with a degree in education. But I still couldn’t find a(n) 181 teaching job. I waited for the phone to ring so I could 182 work as a replacement. One day I would be teaching high school science and the next day I would be 183 with kindergarteners on a playground. This time I was in a local grade school as a(n) 184 for a 5th grade teacher for the day. Determined not to let my time simply 185 , I went over the lesson plans and stayed 186 with the students, smiling and encouraging them. I was determined to 187 the great teachers I’d had when I was a boy and not the critical ones who always left me 188 bad.
At the end of the day just as they were leaving the room a girl handed me a 189 note. I waited until they were all gone before I opened it. It was a lovely drawing full of 190 wonder and a note that said: “You are the best teacher I have ever had!” My mouth fell open in 191 . It really amazed me that my kind 192 had touched that girl’s heart so deeply. I took that note home and put it in a folder. Anytime I was feeling 193 I would look at it and it always made me smile.
That experience showed me the 194 that a single kind word can have on a life. I never saw that girl again, but I 195 that her life has been full of kind words and loving people. And I continue to try my best each day to let love and kindness live through my words and my life.
