When Bilibili uploader Lin Xiao had too many bags to carry, he built a robot to address the problem. The robot’s name Devil!
The name comes from the background music Devil’s Swing. It looks like a suitcase, which can follow Lin everywhere and avoid blocks in its path. Besides carrying bags, it can be used for transport and even charge phones.
The robot has a steel structure and a 3D-printed plastic shell. The brain of the robot is powered by an electronics platform. Although it took eight months to make, Lin admits Devil is not good enough, particularly in its physical stability. Lin presented it in the video just to inspire more young people with the imagination and passion to create.
Lin’s passion for robotics began in his first year at high school in 2018, when a teacher discovered his talent for computers and advanced his skills. One year later, he developed a smart home system, which made him understand how his products could help others. As a university freshman now, Lin believes he and his products will make a difference in the future.

It’s difficult to hope sometimes but there are still a few instances telling us that something better awaits us whether we choose to hold on to it or not. Annie, a 19-year-oldblack Labrador, was given around a month to live when she was placed for adoption in June 2022. Annie’s former owner had given up hope and sent her to a shelter house in Texas because she wouldn’t eat or drink.
Once Siler, 31, discovered Annie’s photo, she knew she had to help. Instead of a month or two, Annie was adopted by Siler and her roommate, Lisa, for an entire year. Siler knew what it took to care for an elderly dog because she had recently lost her own dog, whom she had since college. Siler shared, “I felt mentally and emotionally prepared to take on a dog that wasn’t going to have long.” Siler described Annie as an easygoing dog. Her favorite pastimes included opening mail and sitting outside, watching people and cars pass by, earning her the nickname “nosy neighbour.”
“People kept telling us she was having so much fun and enjoying life and that kept her going, and I hope that was the case. Annie lived almost exactly a year after being adopted by Siler and Lisa. Annie had the life we pray every senior dog we rescue gets to experience. Annie didn’t just live out this past year, she flowered. Annie had an ill stomach. Surgical operation was her only option and that was never something we would put Annie through. Collectively, we made the hardest decision for us but kindest for Annie.” Siler kept in her diary.
“I can’t help but think that Annie would be so proud. She was one special dog whose story will live on through those who adopt seniors. She left a giant, giant hole in my heart…but times, where everyone who loved her can come together in her honor, will help start mending my broken heart.” Siler wrote in her post.
24.Why was Annie placed for adoption in June 2022
A.Because she was too old for her owner to care for.
B.Because her owner had given up hope for her refusal to eat or drink.
C.Because Annie’s owner was moving and couldn’t take her along.
D.Because she had a medical condition that required extensive care.
25.What motivated Siler to adopt Annie
A.Siler wanted a guard dog for her house.
B.Siler’s roommate insisted on adopting a dog.
C.Siler was an advocate for senior dog adoption.
D.Siler sought company after losing her previous dog.
26.What did people say about Annie’s life after adoption
A.She experienced enormous joy.
B.She was miserable and lonely.
C.She was constantly sick and in pain.
D.She didn’t interact with people or other dogs.
27.What did Siler hope for in terms of Annie’s story
A.Annie’s story would be forgotten easily.
B.Annie’s story would encourage seniors to hunt.
C.Annie’s story would inspire senior dogs adoption.
D.Annie’s story would only be remembered for its sadness.
【答案】24.B 25.D 26.A 27.C
根据第一段的“Annie’s former owner had given up hope and sent her to a shelter house in Texas because she wouldn’t eat or drink.(安妮的前主人已经放弃了希望,把她送到了德克萨斯州的一个收容所,因为她不吃不喝)”可知,Annie的前主人放弃了希望,因为Annie不吃不喝,从而导致她被收养,故选B。
根据第二段的“Siler knew what it took to care for an elderly dog because she had recently lost her own dog, whom she had since college. Siler shared, “I felt mentally and emotionally prepared to take on a dog that wasn’t going to have long.”(西尔弗知道照顾一只老狗需要什么,因为她最近失去了自己的狗,这只狗是她从大学开始养的。西尔弗分享说:“我在精神上和情感上都做好了准备,迎接一只活不了多久的狗。”)”可知,Siler刚刚失去了自己的狗,她在精神上和情感上都准备好接受一只不久就会死去的狗。由此可知,她收养Annie的动机之一是在失去了之前的狗后寻求陪伴。故选D。
26.推理判断题。根据第三段的“People kept telling us she was having so much fun and enjoying life and that kept her going, and I hope that was the case. Annie lived almost exactly a year after being adopted by Siler and Lisa. Annie had the life we pray every senior dog we rescue gets to experience. (人们一直告诉我们,她很开心,很享受生活,这让她坚持了下来,我希望是这样。安妮在被西尔弗和丽莎收养后几乎整整活了一年。安妮的生活是我们祈祷我们拯救的每只老年狗都能体验到的)”可知,人们一直告诉Siler,Annie在被收养后过得很开心,很享受生活。由此推知,Annie的生活充满了欢乐。故选A。
根据最后一段的“I can’t help but think that Annie would be so proud. She was one special dog whose story will live on through those who adopt seniors.( 我忍不住想安妮一定会很自豪。她是一只特殊的狗,她的故事将通过那些收养老年狗的人流传下去)”可推知,Siler在她的帖子中表示,她希望收养Annie的故事能激励人们收养老年狗。故选C。

Scientists find when tiny plastics end up in farm fields, the pollution can impair plant growth. But two young researchers now report that combining fungi (真菌) with certain farm wastes can partially overcome that problem. May Shin, 20, and Jiwon Choi, 18, presented their discovery at the 2023 Regeneron International Science and Engineering Fair(ISEF).
The pair met in a research design class at the Fryeburg Academy, a high school in Maine. May had wanted to explore how microplastics might affect the ecosystem. Jiwon was fascinated by plants and fungi. The young scientists shared their interests, May says, to test how long-lived plastics might affect farm crops—and how to limit any harm.
May and Jiwon planted more than 2,000 scallion (韭葱) seeds in pots of soil. Half the seeds got soil polluted with microplastics. The rest grew in plastic-free soil. The plants assigned to each soil were further divided into four groups. The young scientists added certain microscopic fungi to the soil in one group. Another group had a top layer of farm wastes. A third group got both treatments. The last group got none. For three weeks, the pair tracked how many scallions sprouted (萌芽) in each group and measured the plants’ height once each week.
About twice as many scallions sprouted in clean soil compared to that containing plastic bits. But among plants surviving in the polluted soil, a combination of microscopic fungi and farm wastes helped them out. Those getting both treatments grew 5.4 centimeters(about 2 inches)per week. That was faster than either of the treatments alone or those getting none. It was slower, however, than scallions planted in clean soil. They grew 7.2 centimeters(2.8 inches)per week.
In the future, the two young scientists hope to continue testing microscopic fungi and farm wastes under other conditions. Their goal is to see how other factors might change the plants’ response to the soil treatments.
28.What can we learn about May and Jiwon from the first two paragraphs
A.They met in a college.
B.They grow fungi at home.
C.They like to collect farm wastes.
D.They worked together harmoniously.
29.Why did the writer give detailed description to the test in paragraph 3
A.To examine the different plants.
B.To build a scientific model.
C.To show the reliability of the test.
D.To arouse the readers’ interest.
30.What can be found from the result of the test
A.Farm wastes help sprout most in polluted soil.
B.Microscopic fungi helps sprout most in polluted soil.
C.Scallions sprout better in clean soil than in polluted soil.
D.Plants grow better in polluted soil with wastes than in clean soil.
31.What can be inferred from the last paragraph
A.The two scientists are determined.
B.There are many ways to treat soils.
C.Farm wastes will be more valuable.
D.Microscopic fungi will be widely used.
【答案】28.D 29.C 30.C 31.A
根据第一段的“May Shin, 20, and Jiwon Choi, 18, presented their discovery at the 2023 Regeneron International Science and Engineering Fair(ISEF). ( 20岁的May Shin和18岁的Jiwon Choi在2023年再生国际科学与工程博览会(ISEF)上展示了他们的发现。)”和第二段的“The young scientists shared their interests, May says, to test how long-lived plastics might affect farm crops—and how to limit any harm.( May说,年轻的科学家们有共同的兴趣,那就是测试塑料对农作物的长期影响,以及如何限制其危害。)”
根据第三段内容“May and Jiwon planted more than 2,000 scallion (韭葱) seeds in pots of soil.
据第四段中“About twice as many scallions sprouted in clean soil compared to that containing plastic bits. 31.推理判断题。据最后一段的“In the future, the two young scientists hope to continue testing microscopic fungi and farm wastes under other conditions. (未来,这两位年轻的科学家希望在其他条件下继续测试微观真菌和农场废物。)” 可推断,这两位年轻的科学家意志坚定,追求真理,故选A。
D
The Greek philosopher Heraclitus taught that you can’t step into the same river twice, for you aren’t the same person at each visit, and the water is ever flowing. It is a powerful way to represent the reality of impermanence: Everything is always changing.
Many people have tense relationships with change. They deny it, resist it or attempt to control it- the result of which is almost always some combination of stress, anxiety, and burnout. It doesn’t have to be that way.
A concept called allostasis can help. Developed in the late 1980s by a neuroscientist, Peter Sterling, and a biologist, Joseph Eyer, allostasis is defined as “stability through change,” elegantly showing the concept’s double meaning: The way to stay stable through the process of change is by changing, at least to some extent.
The river of change has been flowing mercilessly, and it shows no signs of letting up. Societally, we’ve gone through a pandemic (大流行病), its economic decline and the widespread adoption of social media, the combination of which has shifted how we live and work. In our personal lives, we continue to do what we have always done: relocate, start jobs, quit jobs, change jobs, get promoted, experience illness, get married, have children, retire and on and on.
Finding ways in this river requires both ruggedness and flexibility. To be rugged is to be tough and determined, to know your core values and what you stand for. To be flexible is to actively respond to changing circumstances, to adapt and bend easily without breaking, to grow and even change your mind. Put these qualities together and the result is a great endurance, one that helps you maintain your strong core even in fragile moments. It allows you to step into allostasis’s cycle of order, disorder and reorder — which is, of course, one and the same with stepping into Heraclitus’s river —and to chart it skillfully and whenever possible, to your own benefit.
32.What do we know about allostasis
A.It is a contradictory concept. B.It tends to focus on change.
C.It advocates dynamic stability. D.It claims absolute adaptability.
33.Which of the following best explains “letting up” underlined in paragraph 4
A.Being pumped. B.Slowing down. C.Getting polluted. D.Rising up.
34.What will you gain from practicing allostasis according to the last paragraph
A.Popularity. B.Confidence. C.Recognition. D.Perseverance.
35.What is the best title for the passage
A.Say No to Stability B.Stop Resisting Change
C.Fight for Flexibility D.Balance Life and Work
根据文章第三段“A concept called allostasis can help. Developed in the late 1980s by a neuroscientist, Peter Sterling, and a biologist, Joseph Eyer, allostasis is defined as “stability through change,” elegantly showing the concept’s double meaning: The way to stay stable through the process of change is by changing, at least to some extent.(一种叫做“allostasis”的概念可以提供帮助。
选项A “Being pumped (兴奋)”;选项B “Slowing down (慢下来)”;选项C “Getting polluted (被污染)”;选项D “Rising up (上升)”。故选B。
34.
根据文章最后一段“Put these qualities together and the result is a great endurance, one that helps you maintain your strong core even in fragile moments. It allows you to step into allostasis’s cycle of order, disorder and reorder—which is, of course, one and the same with stepping into Heraclitus’s river —and to chart it skillfully and whenever possible, to your own benefit.(把这些品质放在一起,结果是一个伟大的耐力,一个帮助你保持强大的核心,即使在脆弱的时刻。它能让你进入异稳态的有序、无序和再有序的循环——当然,这与踏入赫拉克利特的河流是一样的——并在可能的时候,为了你自己的利益,巧妙地绘制它的图表。)”可知,通过实践“allostasis”,我们可以通过拥抱变化并从中找到稳定性,可以获得出色的耐力和技巧性地规划自己的道路。故选D。
35.
主旨大意题。根据文章第二段“Many people have tense relationships with change. They deny it, resist it or attempt to control it- the result of which is almost always some combination of stress, anxiety, and burnout. (很多人对改变的态度都很紧张。他们否认、抵制或试图控制它——其结果几乎总是压力、焦虑和倦怠的结合。)”、第三段“It doesn’t have to be that way.(事情并不一定要这样。)”
Planning Out Story Ideas
Plotting a story out can still be difficult, but it doesn’t have to be disappointing! Start by planning out your story ideas.
Brainstorm to generate and character plot ideas. 36 Try freewriting everything that comes to mind, or list out your ideas. You might make a mind map to develop your ideas in a visual manner.
Write the summary of your story. 37 You might start with just a sentence, but keep developing it until you have a short and general description.
38 Write down your character’s description, personal details, likes and dislikes. Create a backstory for your main characters. Describe your characters at the beginning of the story, as well as how they’ll change over the course of the story.
Identify a central conflict. Your conflict should appear early in the story so your readers experience tension as they read. You’ll develop this conflict throughout the story, reaching the peak of the conflict at the climax (高潮). At the end of the story, your conflict should be resolved. Internal conflicts are between the character and himself. 39
Establish your setting. Your setting is very important for your plot because it will influence how your story looks and develops. 40 If you’re setting your story in a place or time period unfamiliar to you, do some research to learn more about it. It’s a good idea to look at photos of your setting, whether you use personal photos or pictures available online.
A.It gives the main points of the story.
B.It is when and where your story takes place.
C.External conflicts occur outside the character.
D.This will help you to solve the conflict of your story.
E.Create character sheets for your main and supporting characters.

Create a backstory for your main characters.(写下你角色的描述、个人细节、喜欢和不喜欢。 E“Create character sheets for your main and supporting characters.(为你的主要和辅助角色创建角色表。)”
39.根前文“At the end of the story, your conflict should be resolved. Internal conflicts are between the character and himself.(在故事的最后,你的冲突应该得到解决。内部冲突发生在角色和他自己之间。)”提到了故事冲突的解决,同时提到了内部冲突,那么设空句应讲到外部冲突。选项C“External conflicts occur outside the character.(外部冲突发生在角色外部。)”提到了外部冲突,与前文衔接紧密。故选C项。
40.根据该段主题“Establish your setting.(建立你的背景。)”可知,设空句应呼应“setting(背景)”这一主题,对其进行进一步解释。选项B“It is when and where your story takes place.(这是你的故事发生的时间和地点。)”具体解释了“背景”是什么,且句中“when and where(何时何地)”呼应后文的“in a place or time period(地点或时期)”,贴合语境,前后衔接紧密。故选B项。

Not so long ago, most people didn’t know who Shelly Ann Francis Pryce was going to become. She was just an average high school athlete. There was every indication that she was just another American teenager without much of a future. However, one person wants to change this. Stephen Francis observed then eighteen-year-old Shelly Ann at a track meet and was convinced that he had seen the beginning of true greatness. Her times were not exactly impressive, but even so, he sensed there was something trying to get out. He decided to offer Shelly-Ann a place in his very strict training seasons. Their cooperation quickly produced results, and a few years later at Jamaica’s Olympic games in early 2008, Shelly Ann, who at that time only ranked number 70 in the world, beat Jamaica’s unchallenged queen of the sprint (短跑).
“Where did she come from ” asked an astonished sprinting world, before concluding that she must be one of those one-hit wonders that spring up from time to time, only to disappear again without signs. But Shelly-Ann was to prove that she was anything but a one-hit wonder. At the Beijing Olympic she swept away any doubts about her ability to perform consistently by becoming the first Jamaican woman ever to win the 100 meters Olympic gold.
Shelly Ann is a little woman with a big smile. Her journey to becoming the fastest woman on earth has been anything but smooth and effortless. She grew up in one of Jamaica’s toughest inner-city communities known as Water house, one of the poorest communities in Jamaica. Sometimes her family didn’t have enough to eat. She ran at the school championships barefooted because she couldn’t afford shoes. Her mother Maxime had been an athlete herself as a young girl but, like so many other girls in Water house, had to stop after she had her first baby. Maxime’s early entry into the adult world with its responsibilities gave her the determination to ensure that her kids would not end up in Water house’s roundabout of poverty. One of the first things Maxime used to do with Shelly-Ann was taking her to the track, and she was ready to sacrifice (牺牲) everything.

1.续写词数应为150左右;
It didn’t take long for Shelly Ann to meet her mother’s expectations.

It didn’t take long for Shelly-Ann to meet her mother’s expectations. On a summer evening in Beijing in 2008, all those long, hard hours of work and commitment finally bore fruit. The barefoot kid who just a few years previously had been living in poverty, had written a new chapter in the history of sports. Shelly-Ann won gold medals at international competitions many times and she gained good fame as well as a big fortune. She completely got out of Waterhouse’s roundabout of poverty at last.
But Shelly-Ann’s victory was far greater than that. The night she won Olympic gold in Beijing, the dark cloud above one of the world’s toughest criminal neighborhoods simply disappeared for a few days. “I have so much fire burning for my country,” Shelly said. She plans to start a foundation for homeless children and wants to build a community centre in Waterhouse. She intends to fight to make it a woman’s as well as a man’s world. A desire, a dream, a vision deep inside the heart determines Shelly’s success.

F.The main character faces issues in society or the rules of society.
G.Write out your ideas before you can develop them into a complete story.
