Every day people joined archaeologists and artists in finding some of the year’s most dramatic discoveries. Below are some examples of 2023.
“Naughty pupils”-ancient punishment method resurfaces
Archaeologists discovered 18,000 ink-carved pieces of pottery-known as “ostraca”—at the site of Athribis early this year, and among them were hundreds of fragments(碎片)with a single symbol repeated front and back.
Those scribbles(潦草的文字)are evidence of ‘naughty “pupils” being made to write lines, according to researchers a Germany’s University of Tuebingen. The fragments also included receipts, school texts, trade information and lists of names.
Van Gogh peers out in hidden portrait
There is one more known van Gogh’s self-portrait in the world, and it was hidden behind a painting of a peasant woman. People made the discovery when they took an X-ray of one of his portraits from 1885 and discovered the artist’s own image behind layers of cardboard and glue. While X-rays often reveal how artists-changed their compositions, the full self-portrait of van Gogh came as a huge surprise, who was known to reuse canvase(画布)to save money.
Another treasure collection from Sanxingdui
The Sanxingdui archaeological site has produced thousands of relics. The latest discovery, reported by Chinese state media in June includes 3,155 objects, a turtle shell-shaped box and a sacrificial altar among them. A team has been digging six places of the site, turning up more than 13,000 objects so far. Last year, the relics they uncovered included a golden mask, ivory artifacts(手工艺品)and a jade knife. The Sanxingdui culture still remains mysterious, as it left behind no written records or human remains, though many believe it to be part of the ancient kingdom of Shu, which ruled along the upper stream of the Yangtze River until it was conquered in 316 BC.
1. What led to the researchers’ conclusion about the fragments
A. The repeated symbol. B. Trade information.
C. Lists of pupils’ names. D. The mark of ink.
2. Why did van Gogh hide his self-portrait in a painting
A. To keep away from X-rays.
B. To save money.
C. To make his works more mysterious.
D. To help people find his composition.
3. Which is the newly-unearthed relic of 2023 in Sanxingdui site
A. A jade knife. B. A golden mask.
C. A written record. D. A turtle shell-shaped box.

Rene Compean was no stranger to Angeles National Forest. But after venturing along a new path last April, the 45-year-old mechanic was lost.
As the day faded into dusk, following several hours of aimless roaming, his concern turned to fear. With no flashlight, only a liter of water and a power bar in his backpack, and less than ten percent battery remaining on his cell phone, Compean was unprepared for anything more than the two-hour trek he’d pean climbed to a spot, some 7,000 feet above sea level, where he found at least one bar of signal. “SOS. My phone is going to die. I’m lost.” He texted a friend, attaching a photo showing where he was. All Compean could do then was wait and hope. But he wouldn’t sleep. After spotting two mountain lions and a bear, he spent the night on high alert.
Sixty miles away in Ventura County, The sheriff’s search-and-rescue teams had spent the previous night unsuccessfully looking for Compean, so they released the photo to the public, hoping someone might know the location.
Ben Kuo, then 47, has an unusual hobby to identify where movie scenes or television shows were filmed. When he saw the blurry image of Compean’s legs surrounded by an endless landscape of rocks and vegetation, he instinctively pulled up a satellite map on his laptop. Then he narrowed his search to the surrounding area. The first thing he noticed in Compean’s photo were patches of greenery. After comparing it to the satellite map, Kuo realized something: “He’s got to be on the south side because there’s not really any green valleys on the north side.”
That finding tightened his search, leading him to an area that resembled the landscape in the image. The final step was cross-referencing the original photo with 3-D images of the area from Google Earth. The locations matched!
Soon, a search-and-rescue team helicopter was in the air, hovering above Compean. After spending 27 hours alone in the wildness, Compean cried, “I’m safe.” Compean’s story probably would have ended very differently had a total stranger with strong satellite skills and a sharp eye for detail not taken action.
4. What can we learn about Rene Compean from the second paragraph
A. Fierce animals attacked him.
B. Being alone made him unable to fall asleep.
C. His dead cell phone isolated him from the outside.
D. Insufficient preparation transformed his worry into fear.
5. Ben Kuo was able to help because of .
A. his photo reading ability. B. his sense of responsibility.
C. his professional experience. D. his familiarity with the area.
6. Which of the following can best describe Ben Kuo
A. Timid and smart. B. Daring and expert.
C. Observant and swiftly-acting. D. Sharp-eyed and widely-interested.
7. What can be the best title for the text
A. Screen Saver: No Useless Knowledge. B. Lost Hiker: Boldness Deserved.
C. Nature Lover: Adventure Failed. D. Hiking Goer: Narrow Escape.
D 5. A 6. C 7. A

根据最后一段中“Compean’s story probably would have ended very differently had a total stranger with strong satellite skills and a sharp eye for detail not taken action.”(如果不是一个拥有高超卫星技术和敏锐尾巴观察力的陌生人采取行动,康帕恩的故事结局可能会大相径庭。) 故选A项。
C
As you read this, pause to reflect on your recent interactions. As a politician, husband, and father, I encounter various spoken language styles: analytical or chatty, formal or informal, pointed or gentle, cooperative or decisive. Talk is the currency of politics. It is our way of negotiating, debating, and persuading. Talk is also the currency of learning-how we develop our ideas, deepen our thinking and share our feelings.
That’s why I want speaking skills, sometimes called “oracy”, to play an important part in Labor’s plans for a reformed school curriculum (课程).
Employers value speaking skills equally with reading and writing. The ability to speak well and express yourself should be something every child should master. But the curriculum doesn’t allow us to provide this. This is short-sighted. An inability to express your thoughts fluently is a key barrier to getting on and doing well in life.
Oracy is in part about good public speaking and debating skills, but in reality, it’s about teaching young people to make strong arguments, choose wise words, understand their audience, form meaningful social connections, and use facial expressions and body language to convey their message. Above all else it’s about finding your voice. To work out who you are and what you believe. If reading opens up a world of imagination and possibility, then speaking and listening opens up a lifetime of empowerment-a chance for those who feel invisible in their own country to be heard. It is about the confidence to speak out, to call out injustice or harm.
And the other side of speaking is listening, which can also be taught. Listening, truly listening, develops tolerance and understanding. And as parents we can play our part. We’ve all been there, at mealtimes, silent as we all stare at our devices. Our job, all of ours, is to get off our screens and give young people, and adults, the gift of listening.
So, oracy―speaking and listening―needs to be placed firmly at the heart of school life.
8. How does talk help a politician
A. It deepens his wishful thinking.
B. It enhances his analytical skills.
C. It strengthens persuasive power.
D. It provides emotional support.
9. Why does the author suggest a reform in the British school curriculum
A. Employers underestimate the value of speaking.
B. Academic pressure makes students poor-sighted.
C. Spoken language is regarded as least important.
D. Oracy should deserve more attention at school.
10. How does the author illustrate his argument in paragraph 4
A. By sharing different opinions.
B. By clarifying the definition.
C. By describing personal experiences.
D. By employing the concept.
11. What are parents advised to do
A. Set a good example for their children.
B. Balance screen time and mealtime.
C. Have oral face-to-face communication.
D Disconnect from the virtual world.
C 9. D 10. B 11. C

根据第一段“Talk is the currency of politics. It is our way of negotiating, debating, and persuading.”(谈话是政治的货币。
根据第三段“But the curriculum doesn’t allow us to provide this. This is short-sighted. An inability to express your thoughts fluently is a key barrier to getting on and doing well in life.”(但是课程不允许我们提供这些。
根据第四段“Oracy is in part about good public speaking and debating skills, but in reality, it’s about teaching young people to make strong arguments, choose wise words, understand their audience, form meaningful social connections, and use facial expressions and body language to convey their message. Above all else it’s about finding your voice.”(口语能力在某种程度上是关于良好的公共演讲和辩论技能,但实际上,它是关于教会年轻人提出有力的论点,选择明智的词汇,理解他们的听众,形成有意义的社会联系,以及使用面部表情和肢体语言来传达他们的信息。 及“It is about the confidence to speak out, to call out injustice or harm.”(它关乎大声疾呼、揭露不公或伤害的信心。)可知,第四段作者多次利用“it is about…”
根据最后一段“And as parents we can play our part. We’ve all been there, at mealtimes, silent as we all stare at our devices. Our job, all of ours, is to get off our screens and give young people, and adults, the gift of listening.”(作为父母,我们可以发挥自己的作用。

Chilly weather and common respiratory (呼吸器官的) infections often go hand in hand. Reasons for this include people gather inside more in winter and viruses survive better in low-humidity indoor air. But there has been less certainty about whether lower temperatures actually impair human immunity (免疫力) and, if so, how.
Now, a new study published December 6, 2022, in the Journal of Allergy and Clinical Immunology details a previously unknown way that the immune system attacks viruses inside the nose and finds it works better when it’s warm.
Mansoor Amiji, a pharmaceutical sciences professor at Northeastern University, found that our noses released “extracellular vesicles” (EVs) — a spray of tiny sacs (囊) that gathered and destroyed bacteria upon breathing in.
For the new research, the team set out to answer a question: is the strength of EVS’ response linked to temperature
In order to tackle the question, they divided the nasal (鼻的) cell samples into two groups and cultivated them in a lab, subjecting one set of samples to 37C, and the other to 32°C.
Under regular body heat conditions, the EVs were successfully able to fight off viruses. But under the reduced temperatures, fewer EVs were produced, and those that were made packed less attack against the invaders tested: two rhinoviruses (鼻病毒的) and a non-COVID coronavirus, which are typically found in winter cold season.
“There’s never been a convincing reason why you have this very clear increase in viral infectivity in the cold months,” said co-author Benjamin Bleier, a surgeon at Harvard Medical School and Massachusetts Eye and Ear. “This is the first quantitative and biologically reasonable explanation that has been developed.” He added.
“These discoveries could pave the way for an eventual treatment against the common cold, or even the flu and COVID,” said Amiji, “That’s an area of great interest for us and we certainly continue to pursue that.”
12. What does the underlined word “impair” in Paragraph 1 mean
A. Damage. B. Improve. C. Influence. D. Preserve.
13. How did Mansoor Amiji conduct the new research
A. By raising a question. B. By cultivating the nasal samples.
C. By setting the contrast experiment. D. By adjusting the temperature in the lab.
14. What can we know about the EVs according to the research
A. The EVs are typically found in the cold season.
B. The EVs release sacs to destroy bacteria upon inhalation.
C. The EVs won’t resist the rhinoviruses under regular body heat conditions.
D. The EVs’ quantity and attack power are positively associated with temperature.
15 What is Benjamin Bleier’s attitude towards the result of the study
A. Skeptical. B. Approved. C. Conservative. D. Indifferent.
A 13. C 14. D 15. B
根据划线词上文“Reasons for this include people gather inside more in winter and viruses survive better in low-humidity indoor air.(究其原因,冬天人们更多地聚集在室内,而病毒在低湿度的室内空气中更容易存活)”以及“there has been less certainty about whether lower temperatures actually”可知,上文提到病毒在低湿度的室内空气中更容易存活,故划线词所在句意思是低温是否真的会损害人体免疫力。 故选A。
根据第五段“In order to tackle the question, they divided the nasal (鼻的) cell samples into two groups and cultivated them in a lab, subjecting one set of samples to 37C, and the other to 32°C.(为了解决这个问题,他们将鼻细胞样本分成两组,并在实验室中培养,将一组样本置于37℃,另一组置于32℃)”可知,Mansoor Amiji通过设置对比实验进行这项新研究。
根据倒数第三段“But under the reduced temperatures, fewer EVs were produced, and those that were made packed less attack against the invaders tested: two rhinoviruses (鼻病毒的) and a non-COVID coronavirus, which are typically found in winter cold season.(但在温度降低的情况下,EV的数量减少了,而那些被包装好的EV对测试的入侵者的攻击也减少了:两种鼻病毒和一种非冠状病毒,这两种病毒通常在冬季寒冷季节发现)”可知,EV的数量和攻击力与温度呈正相关。
根据倒数第二段““There’s never been a convincing reason why you have this very clear increase in viral infectivity in the cold months,” said co-author Benjamin Bleier, a surgeon at Harvard Medical School and Massachusetts Eye and Ear. “This is the first quantitative and biologically reasonable explanation that has been developed.”
What is stereotype It is commonly known as a fixed over-generalized belief about a particular group or class of people, consisting of gender, age, occupation, etc.

Age stereotype is that someone judges other people’s behavior and appearance because of the age. Children are often described as innocent, naughty. Then, young people are usually stereotyped as impatient, rebellious and indulging in comfort. Adults are related to responsibility. ___17___ Because the old people are stereotyped as weak and sick, not moving flexibly, which means to be a big trouble.

根据上文“Gender stereotype refers to a judgment about someone according to their sex instead of believing in their ability. Men have been thought to be a leader, strong, aggressive and brave(性别刻板印象指的是根据某人的性别而非其能力做出判断。男性通常被认为具有领导力、坚强、具有攻击性且勇敢)”可知,上文说的是性别刻板印象,并解释了男性的在人们心中的形象,可推理出下文说的是女性在人们心中的形象,与E项“But women are thought to be attached, weak, compromised and soft(但是,女性被认为是依恋的、软弱的、妥协的和温柔的)”表达的含义一致,故选E项。
【17题详解】
根据下文“Because the old people are stereotyped as weak and sick, not moving flexibly, which means to be a big trouble(因为老年人被刻板地认为是体弱多病、行动不便,这意味着会带来很大的麻烦。)”
根据下文“A concept can easily be formed that star is a decent and charming job with a lot of fun and more opportunities to contact fashion and celebrity, to dress up, and to taste delicious food in high-class restaurants. But not all stars can have these wonderful experiences.(人们很容易就会形成一个观念,认为明星是一个体面且充满魅力的职业,有很多乐趣,有更多的机会接触时尚和名人,可以打扮得光鲜亮丽,在高档餐厅品尝美食。但并非所有明星都能拥有这些美妙的体验)”可知下文说的是人们心中的有关明星的职业刻板印象,可推理出此处上下文说的是职业刻板印象在人们心中存在,与D项“Occupation stereotype also occurs in our minds(职业刻板印象也存在于我们的心中。)”表达的含义一致,故选D项。
【19题详解】
根据下文“They have to work on the other business to earn money under the pressure of life.(在生活压力之下,他们不得不从事其他生意来赚钱。)”可知,此处上下文说的是有些明星收入并不是我们想象中的那么高,与F项“Some stars’ salary is lower than common white-collar workers.(有些明星的薪水比普通白领还低。)”
根据上文“Some view stereotype as a good way to enable them to respond to different things, judging if they are good or bad, as well as adapting into a new environment. However, some stereotypes are not quite consistent with the changing world and are easy to produce prejudice or misunderstandings(有些人认为刻板印象是一种很好的方式,使他们能够对不同的事物做出反应,判断其好坏,并适应新环境。然而,有些刻板印象与不断变化的世界并不完全一致,容易产生偏见或误解。)”可知,上文说的是刻板印象带来的不好的影响,可推理出下文引出一个更明智的处理刻板印象的方法,与B项“Thus, it is much wiser for us to deal with stereotype in a wider perspective(因此,我们从更宽广的视角处理刻板印象要明智得多)”表达的含义一致,故选B项。

Is Reading a Book Better than Listening to It
Recently, our class have had a discussion on whether reading a book is better than listening to it.
Some students consider it better to read a book. It helps them better digest the information in it and more easily turn the pages back and forth to review points. However others disagree. They think listening to books is more convenient, as they can do it anytime and anywhere. Moreover, they can do other stuff while listening.
Personally, both methods have strengths and weaknesses. As students, we should read the books related to our lessons and listen to other books for relaxation.

My Best Examination
One day, while at work in a coal-mine in Malden, I happened to overhear two miners talking about a great school for poor people in Virginia. It was Hampton Institute. The school was established to provide opportunities for poor but worthy students who could work out all or a part of the cost of board, and at the same time be taught some trade or industry.
I was on fire constantly with one ambition, and that was to go to school. I decided at once to go to that school. Finally the great day came and I started for Hampton. I had only a small, cheap bag that contained what few articles of clothing I could get. The distance from Malden to Hampton is about five hundred miles. I had not been away from home many hours before it began to grow painfully evident that I did not have enough money to pay my fare (路费) to Hampton.
By walking and begging rides in some way, I finally reached the grounds of the Hampton Institute after a number of days, tired and dirty. As soon as possible after reaching, I presented myself before the head teacher for assignment to a class. Having been so long without proper food, a bath, and change of clothing, I was like a worthless loafer (游荡者).
I did not, of course, make a very favourable impression upon her, and I could see at once that there were doubts in her mind about the wisdom of admitting me as a student. I tried to impress her in all the ways I could with my worthiness. How I wished that I could get a chance to show what was in me.
After some time, the head teacher said to me, “The adjoining (隔壁的) classroom needs sweeping. Take the broom and sweep it.”

__________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________
It occurred to me at once that here was my chance. Never did I receive an order with more delight. I knew I could sweep, for my parents thoroughly taught me how to do that when I was young. I swept the room three times. Then I got a dusting-cloth and I dusted it four times. All the woodwork around the walls, every bench, table and desk, I went over four times with my dusting-cloth, I had the feeling that in a large measure my future depended upon the impression I made upon the teacher in the cleaning of that room. When I was through, I reported to her.
The head teacher went into the room and inspected the floor and closets. Then she took her handkerchief and rubbed it on the woodwork about the walls, and over the table and benches. When she was unable to find one bit of dirt on the floor, or a particle of dust on any of the furniture, she quietly remarked, “I guess you will do to enter this institution.” I was one of the happiest souls on earth. The sweeping of that room was my college examination! I have passed several examinations since then, but I have always felt that this was the best one I had ever passed.

C. Lists of pupils’ names. D. The mark of ink.

4 What can we learn about Rene Compean from the second paragraph
A. Fierce animals attacked him.
B. Being alone made him unable to fall asleep.
C. His dead cell phone isolated him from the outside.
D. Insufficient preparation transformed his worry into fear.

7. What can be the best title for the text

A. It deepens his wishful thinking.
B. It enhances his analytical skills.
C It strengthens persuasive power.
D. It provides emotional support.

11. What are parents advised to do
