Let’s read an excerpt of the novel The Great Gatsby. Then watch a short movie clip adapted from this part.
他善解人意地笑了笑 —— 不仅仅是善解人意。它是那种让你感到十分放心的很罕见的一种笑,这种笑,也许在你的一生中只能碰到四五次。这种微笑只是在那么一瞬间面对着,或似乎面对着整个永恒的世界,随后又集中到你身上,表现出对你的一种不能抗拒的偏爱。它能够理解你,恰好就到你需要被理解的程度;

3.What is author’s opinion for “Good book, bad movie”
Books and movies are two different forms of media and therefore have the different rules. We should judge the movie adaptation based on itself, not based on the book.
There are a thousand Hamlets in a thousand people’s eyes. Furthermore, books and movies are two different forms of media and therefore have different rules. With this in mind, perhaps we should judge a movie in its own right, and not against its original source. Interestingly, audiences have in recent years turned to television series such as Sherlock or Mad Men, which can have many characters and gradual plot development. Perhaps, one day, readers of F. Scott Fitzgerald’s most admired work will find themselves glued to their screens by episodes of The Great Gatsby.

Activity 1 Discussion
1.In your opinion, which is better, the books or the movies based on them (Critical thinking)
Compared with movies, books suit me better. My reasons are as follows. Firstly, books are more wonderful and detailed. However, movies are too simple and brief. To be short, movies often cut off many plots and characters. Secondly, the description of books are more beautiful and imaginative. Movies often change the way of the characters and stories that we imagine, which spoils our feeling. Lastly, books can give me more knowledge and experience. just as a saying goes, “Reading a book seems to come to the world several times.”
2.What books would you like to see made into movies Why?(Creative thinking)
(1) Use the notes to help plan your talk.
Title of the book: ____________________
Your point of view: __________________
Reasons: ___________________________
(2) Organise your talk following the steps below.
Introduce the book.
Describe the movie adaptation.
Give your opinion of the movie adaptation.
Based on the best-selling novel, movie Wonder is very successful. I have read the book before, and it introduces a little boy Auggie, who had a deformed face, ends up overcoming obstacles and embracing kindness.
Personally I like the movie very much. First of all, the story is touching. For example, my tears couldn’t stop when the main character Auggie, so weary of the frightened looks of others, cries asking his mom, “Why am I so ugly ”
Another reason why I like the movie is that it has a strong character. Auggie believes he himself is a tough-minded and intelligent person, and with this in mind, he finally manages to gain acceptance by most of his schoolmates and other people in the community.
Furthermore, I like the actress Julia Roberts in the movie. Actually I’m a fan of her. I have watched a lot of Julia’s movies, including Notting Hill, My Best Friend’s Wedding, Sleeping with the Enemy and so on.
There are a thousand Hamlets in a thousand people’s eyes, but from my point of view, the movie is highly successful.
People say that “a picture is worth 1.___ thousand words”,because all too often, great words end up 2.____________(turn) into cinematic “turkeys”.
Good movies need good stories. But why has Homer’s The Odyssey never had an 3._______(equal) great movie based on it Movies need strong characters. So why have the movies based on The Great Gatsby never been praised as “great”? Movies need 4.__________(impress) images,so why has Alice in Wonderland only resulted in movies best 5._________(describe) as “interesting”?
