古英语时期(450-1150):始于1500多年前北欧。在公元5世纪由3个日耳曼部落——盎格鲁、撒克逊、裘特人带过来。盎格鲁人原语言是“Englisc”(“English”之来源)。在此时期,古英语朝简化词形变化发展,语法某些方面与现代英语语法不同。近代英语时期(1150-1500):1066年,
诺曼人征服英国,对英语有显著冲击,改变了单词拼法,更引入许多新的诺曼词汇。
在此时期,英语文法与单词都有变化。
现代英语时期(1500-):在此时期,来自拉丁语和希腊语的词汇被归入英语。
