Recently, I’ve found many old photos of Mom, Dad, David, me and my first dog Coco. They meant a lot to me. I wondered how to keep them forever. Luckily my son used a new app to clear up and improve some of the old photos. Looking at them brought back so many loving and happy memories. I even used one as my computer screen saver (屏保).
It is a picture of me sitting in my favorite chair, across from the wood stove (炉子), next to a bookcase full of old books. I am wearing my special Snoopy shirt and hugging Coco. There is a big smile on my face and a joyful shining light in my eyes. It was how I spent a lot of my winter afternoons as a girl, hugging Coco and reading an old book.
It is surprising how 60 years later that girl still lives inside of me. I still love comfortable chairs, warm stoves, Snoopy clothes, hugging dogs and reading books on cold winter days. But when I look in the mirror now, all I see is a thin face, grey hair and lots of wrinkles (皱纹). The only thing that hasn’t completely changed is the eyes. They are hiding behind glasses now and full of wisdom (智慧) given by ages. But they still have that same joyful shining light.
Looking at the little girl smiling at me from the computer screen and that 66-year-old woman looking back at me in the mirror can be a little bit strange at times. They look so different. However, they are both me. We can’t stop getting older, but we can remain both joyful and young at heart forever.

One of my favorite books is The Adventures of Tom Sawyer by Mark Twain. The story happens in a town in the US. It tells some exciting stories about a boy who has many adventures (冒险).
Tom, the hero of the book, lives with his aunt. He does not like people telling him what to do, so he always get into trouble. One day, Tom discovers the secret of a bad man named Injun Joe, so the bad man is looking for him. Tom firstly runs away to an island in the middle of the Mississippi River. Later, he runs into a cave (山洞) with a friend. They find Injun Joe’s treasure box unexpectedly and arrive home safely with it.
My favorite part of the book is when Tom and his friend start their adventures on the island in the Mississippi River. At first, they are happy. But hearing that everyone thinks they are dead, they feel very sorry. So they come back home. When they suddenly appear, the family and neighbors are surprised to see them, but very pleased to find that they are alive.
The Adventures of Tom Sawyer is a great book. First of all, it tells a wonderful adventure story. It also tells how young people grow, how people love each other and how bad people pay for their actions. It is written in everyday English, and the dialogues sound especially real. I’m the type of person who acts without thinking things clearly. I just do things as they come and hope for the best. That’s why I wasted all the spring playing and missed the chance to get a part-time job for the summer. What a terrible summer it was! My friends had jobs and money to buy things with. But I was too late. My summer ended up being long and boring.
My aunt Sara, is known in our family as a wise woman. She told me a story. It was simple, but it made me think about my care-free (无忧的) life.
There were three fish living in a small river. Their names were Make Plans, Fast Thinker, and Wait and See. One day, they heard a fisherman saying that he would cast a net (撒网) into the river in the morning. Make Plans was not worried. At once, he decided to hide and stay away from the danger. Fast Thinker was not worried. He was sure he will have a plan. Wait and See was not worried either. “I will decide what to do in the morning,” he said.
In the morning, the fisherman cast his net. By this time, Make Plans was far away, but the other two fish were caught. Fast Thinker pretended (假装) to be dead. Growing up, we’ve heard a lot of stereotypes (刻板印象) of how sex (性别) influences interests and jobs. For example, most boys do math better than girls, while most girls are better at learning languages. We usually think this is because of differences in how boys’ and girls’ brains work. But is it true
According to past studies, some parts of our brains can be different in size. Scientists used to think these differences might influence how well men and women think and do things. They found this by scanning (扫描) people’s brains. However, researchers only scanned dozens of (几十个) people. As said in a 2022 study, for such research to be believable, you would need to scan the brains of a few thousand people at least.
In 2023, the UK Biobank scanned the brains of 40,000 people in the UK. It showed differences between men and women in the size of certain brain parts. About one-third of these parts were found to be larger in men, while another third were larger in women. However, these differences were very small. The differences are not big enough to form a conclusion (结论) from them.
Also, our brains might change in structure (结构) and size according to our life experiences. For example, even if a part of a man’s brain, responsible for doing math, is larger than that of a woman, it is possibly because he takes jobs that use math skills. So, any brain differences between men and women could be a result, not a cause, of different roles in life and society.

30.It is true that all boys can do math better than girls.
31.The results of the 2022 study are believable.

It was a school trip. All of us were hungry for it for long. I went to Changbai Mountain with my classmates at the beginning of 2023. The trip was really wonderful.
Jilin Province, in the northeast of China, is famous for Changbai Mountain. It is one of the “Top 10 Mountains in China”. The name of it means “a mountain which remains white all year round” in Chinese. The name Changbai Mountain was first used in the Liao Dynasty. The mountain was recorded in the Classic of Mountains and Seas under the name Buxian Mountain. It was called Taibai Mountain in the Tang Dynasty.
In the early morning, we climbed the mountain from the western side. Along the way, we saw several wild animals and we were totally shocked at the beauty of the mountain. The whole mountain area is under thick snow cover for two months every year. The higher points from 1,500 meters to 2,400 meters above the sea level are covered with snow for more than six months. Changbai Mountain is one of the most popular places for winter sports and amusements. We even tried many thrilling rides on the snow. It was so much fun. Besides, we enjoyed different kinds of foods.
What excited us most is undoubtedly the Tianchi Lake. It is the deepest alpine (高山的) lake in China. The Tianchi Lake is the place where the Songhua, Tumen and Yalu rivers begin and it has been regarded as a mysterious lake. Not all visitors are lucky enough to see the Tianchi Lake clearly the first time they go there, but we were.

Have you seen the clay soldiers (士兵) in Xi’an’s terracotta museum Do you know the true colors of them
More than 2,000 years ago, Qin Shihuang, the first emperor of China, ordered people to build the Terracotta Army. He hoped that the army would guard him after he died.
In 1974, some farmers found several clay soldiers by accident in Xi’an. After that, about 8,000 more were found by archeologists (考古学家). Today, the clay soldiers in Xi’an’s terracotta museum are light brown. But they weren’t always this color. When they were made, they had the colors of white, green, blue, red, purple and yellow. Sadly, most of the colors disappeared today.
An area with more than a hundred clay soldiers was discovered by archeologists a few years ago. Many of them still had black hair, pink faces and black or brown eyes when they were found. If they were not protected well, their colors would disappear, too. After a clay soldier was found, archeologists used two steps to keep its color. First, they sprayed (喷) a special “water” on it. Then, they covered it in plastic.

Of course, the fisherman did not want dead fish, so he threw Fast Thinker back into the river. Wait and See was the only fish that was caught and sold that evening at the market.

Archeologists are facing a new challenge now. They are going to find a way to put the colors onto the clay soldiers again. If they succeed in doing it, people will be able to see what the clay soldiers originally (最初) looked like. It must be very amazing.
