The Library With No Rules
When you walk by Eric’s home on Balgis Street, downtown Bangkok (曼谷), you will see thousands of books on shelves and on the stairs. Each book is free to anyone who wants it.
“People can borrow, take home, bring back or keep,” says Eric. “Or they can share and pass on to another. But they should just take, take!” He thinks books need to live, and they’re only alive if they are being read. “The act of giving books makes your life meaningful,” says Eric.
The Reading Club 2000, as the project shows, began more than twenty years ago. “My parents gave me my love of reading,” he says. “I started the club to honour them and to do some kind of community service. So I put my old books and my brothers’ and sisters’, maybe 100 in all—outside, to see if anyone was interested.”
It took a while for people to work out this was a library. It never closed and there were no rules. But the project, offering everything from paperbacks to fashion magazines, technical books and school textbooks, is becoming popular.
The success of the project is helped by the fact that the country, with a small population, has fewer than 700 public libraries, and many people cannot afford to buy books. Luckily, the project is spreading. Eric takes boxes of books into Bangkok community himself. He has also helped friends set up similar projects in ten other places around the country, and encouraged students to donate books.
1.What is Eric’s opinion about books
2.Why did Eric start the Reading Club 2000

As a child, Alain Robert was afraid of heights. One day, when he was 12, he returned home from school. At the front door of his building, he looked for his keys. He didn’t have them. It was 3:30 p.m and his parents worked until 6:00 p.m.
Alain looked at his flat on the eighth floor.
He saw an open window. He closed his eyes and imagined himself climbing the building. When he opened his eyes, he told himself, “I can do it.” Fifteen minutes later, he was in his house and his fear of heights was gone.
Today, Alain still climbs buildings. In 2003, he climbed a building in London dressed as Spiderman to advertise the movie. In 2004, he climbed Taipei 101 (one of the tallest buildings in the world). To reach the top of a building, Alain uses only his hands and special shoes. Alain climbs as a hobby. He also does it to make money for charity—for children and the homeless.
When he climbs, he wants to send a message to people. If you have a dream—something you really want to do—it can become real. But you must be brave and keep trying. If something bad happens, don’t give up. Close your eyes and tell yourself, “I can do it”.

This spring, the most eye-catching movie might be YOLO (《热辣滚烫》). By March 18, it had made around 3.5 billion yuan at the box office, reported Paper.
Directed by 41-year-old Jia Ling, the movie tells the story of a woman tired of the world, finding herself and learning to love life through boxing (拳击). The name of YOLO is short for the movie’s main idea— you only live once.
Jia Ling has tried many different roles in her life, including crosstalk (相声) and sketch (小品) performer, variety show (综艺节目) guest and actress. The movie Hi, Mom (《你好,李焕英》) in 2019 is the first one Jia directed in her life.
Jia didn’t study directing at university. It makes her feel freer in film making because she doesn’t need to follow a fixed style. To everyone’s surprise, Hi, Mom made her the world’s highest-grossing (票房最高的) woman director before 2023.
Before making YOLO, Jia was often seen as an overweight comedian (喜剧演员). She often made jokes about herself to make people laugh. For this movie, Jia lost more than 50 kg which made it hard to imagine that this is the same Jia we once knew. Some people online said even her voice became softer, and they called this a “rebirth” for Jia. She has proved through her actions that if you want to be successful, you need to try your best.
In Jia’s eyes, her change in identity (身份) and look is her way of saying true to herself. “It’s hard to predict one’s life. I’m just following my heart but not looking for changes in purpose. Movies are now the best way to show myself, so I put all my energy into them.” Jia told Xinhua.

I joined a band (乐队) as a drummer in my middle school. I thought it would be fun playing the drum and meeting new friends. At first it was easy, but a month later, it got difficult. I was the only one who couldn’t keep pace (节奏) with the other players.
Our teacher, Angie, singled me out to keep practicing while everyone else got to relax. I felt ashamed (羞愧的) as my teammates watched me fail so many times. Finally I got so tired of practicing that I didn’t care about doing it right.
“Are you giving up on me, Steve ” Angie asked.
“Yes, I am,” I shouted. Angie sent me inside the music room where I cried out. Then she came in and said. “Don’t be sad. I believe you can make it!” She told me never to give up. She left me alone and I realized Angie was right—by giving up, I was also giving up on the team and myself.
With her comfort, I decided to go on practicing. However, I still couldn’t play well. Knowing my difficulties, I began to keep pace with them. Later, we performed wonderfully in an important show.
In the whole process, I was taught that although we each had our own job to do in a show, it would take all of us working together to make the show great. I felt accepted and made great progress. I love everyone in the band. I can’t imagine what my school life would be like without them.

Screen-Free Day
I remember the first time I suggested screen-free days in our school to some of our student leaders. I played a joke on my group and said. “What do you think if we go a week without using our computers or smartphones ”
They laughed, and one of them said, “No way, Mr. White. That’s impossible for us!” I could feel their worry, and told them that I was only considering the days without “screens”. Even that idea left them feeling upset.
According to a survey we did, most students in our school spend about six hours a day on screens. Many of my students start their day by checking their smartphones. I often see them looking at their phones when getting off the bus or at parents’ drop-off because they can’t use their own “screens” at school. They usually work on computers at school for at least two hours during the day.
It’s clear that our students spend a lot of time on screens. There’s no doubt that we can see the advantages of technology. However, we teachers also want to make sure that students have balanced leaning and social experiences away from their screens. That’s why we have come up with the idea of screen-free days.
During the course of the year, we have built in several screen-free days that require us to make different plans for our students about how they will communicate with one another and the world around them without “screens”,
Fun activities, for example, card games and room escape (密室逃脱) games, are organized at school. In these activities, students make social communications without smartphones and have face-to-face communication without checking on “likes” (点赞) they’ve got online. These fun activities also make it possible for the whole grade to enjoy the company of their friends with no smartphones.
After our first screen-free day, students mentioned that they were surprised they enjoyed it. It is important to find ways to help our students connect with one another. While technology is already part of our world, it shouldn’t play such an important role in a learner’s life.

Imagine you are walking through deep snow. As you walk, you leave footprints where you’ve been. That’s what happens when using technology, such as computers, mobile phones and tablets. You leave your digital footprint and it will never disappear.
Here are reasons why your digital footprint should matter to you.
How people see you
Of course, you have nothing to hide, but if people get information about you, they might judge you from the information you have left online. For example, you make a bad joke online. Years later, it’s found by the university you are applying to, and they don’t think it’s funny. Maybe they decide you are not the “right” kind of person for them,
Your private information
Not everything can be shared with everyone. For example, you might share your school reports with your parents, but keep them secret to your e-friends. If you share them on the Internet, they will not be a secret anymore. Therefore, to protect your privacy(隐私), remember to put out less information online.
Keeping your money safe
There are plenty of people looking at information about you, and some of them want to steal from you. So you shouldn’t write bank details, card numbers or passwords in emails or text messages.

The earliest form of writing appeared about 5, 500 years ago. In the past, hand writing was an important subject in school. Now, many students sometimes do homework on a computer and turn in their tasks online.
Many people think typing (打字) is quick and easy to read, while writing by hand may take longer than typing. But others say writing with a pen and paper is more valuable. Writing by hand has big advantages. Research shows that when we write down ideas with a pen or pencil, we make the brain active to help us learn, remember and think. Writing by hand lets people show their creativity. No two people have the same handwriting. Writing by hand can also help people concentrate. When using a computer, people can go online or play computer games easily.
Handwriting may be pretty, however, people can get their ideas and thoughts down more quickly when they type. Typing can also make it easier for people to change. Once something is written by hand, you can’t delete it. If you want to make a change, you have to write it all over again. What’s more, some people’s handwriting may be hard to read. My 100 Days Without a Mobile Phone
When was the last time you left home without your mobile phone Can you imagine yourself living a month, or even a year without checking your mobile phone from time to time
As a busy modern person with lots of social connections, plans and responsibilities, I just cannot afford to not be in touch with the rest of the world. Staying connected to other people is a big part of my life. However, sometimes it can be bothersome (恼人的).
One day I discovered I was terribly tired out. I tried turning notifications (通知) off. But the fear of missing out something important made me check the phone more often than before. So, I simply stopped using my phone.
Well, to tell the truth, it was not simple at all. For the first couple of days, I had a big fear that all of my friends would soon forget about me. When I had a free moment, I had no idea what to get myself distracted (分心的) with, and the worries mixed with boredom kept bothering me.
However, after three weeks without a mobile phone, I started noticing changes — changes which I liked, and which drove me to not just continue the experiment, but in fact to reorganize some of my habits.
First of all, I noticed that I became much more focused (专注的). Before, while doing something, I would often find myself wondering what was going on online. After a month of staying away from my mobile phone, I found that the urge (冲动) was already not that strong and that my ability to focus improved.
I discovered that the world is a beautiful place. Before, I would look at it through my camera mostly: take a photo, post it, get some likes. Now, I saw beautiful people walking around and I sensed the seasons change. I could understand the actual beauty of the world, and I did not need anyone else to prove the value of this beauty through likes or shares.
Now, as 100 days have passed, I can say that the experiment was worth it. I am planning to stay away from my phone for as long as possible.
86.What made the writer check the phone more often than before
87.When did the writer start noticing his changes

He has also helped friends set up similar projects in ten other places around the country, and encouraged students to donate books.

“In fact, Jia didn’t change. She’s just being more herself. She shows us through her actions.” said talk show host Chen Luyu.

42.How many hours do most students in the school spend on screens every day
43.Why have the teachers come up with the idea of screen-free days
44.What fun activities can the students have at school

Overall, the message is: No one can go online without leaving his digital footprint—but with care, you can control it.

Typing makes everything clear, and no one will have to worry about their words being clear enough.

Humans share the Earth with all kinds of wildlife and have lived in peace with them for thousands of years.
Many of our animal friends may not be around for much longer, however, and many of them are in great danger. According to a study, the populations of animals including mammals (哺乳动物), birds and fish have fallen by an average of 60 percent since 1970. What’s worse, a study in 2014 found that species (物种) are dying out 1,000 times faster than normal.
Sadly, it is because of humans that animals are in this situation now. By increasing human development, we may end up seriously harming the environment on which animals live and depend. Human development has caused pollution in oceans and three quarters of the world’s land to be affected (影响). The balance between animals and their ecosystems has been greatly harmed by humans.
Luckily, many people have realized that our action in fact does harm to animals, risking our own lives as a result, so effective steps have been quickly taken to save both these endangered animals as well as ourselves. The World Wildlife Fund has called on governments and businesses to protect nature. In China, many natural reserves (保护区) have been built up and harmful behavior such as selling rhino horns (犀牛角), tiger bones and ivory has been banned (禁止).
People have been taking steps in the right direction, which is encouraging news. The numbers of many animals have increased. The protection of animals still has a long way to go. In the end, to protect animals is to protect ourselves, and we should spare no effort toward living in harmony (和谐) with nature.

Before 1970, few laws protected the environment. Then on April 22 that year, Earth Day was created to celebrate our planet, tell people about environmental problems, and encourage them to take action. Now Earth Day is celebrated all around the world. We still face many challenges, such as climate(气候) change, plastic pollution, and deforestation(毁林). But we can make a difference. Here is an Earth-helping hero.
Adeline Tiffanie Suwana was twelve when her family’s home flooded. Indonesia, her island nation in South-east Asia, is often hit hard by floods and other natural disasters.
Adeline wanted to help. Studying the problem, she learned that mangrove trees play an important role in flood protection. Their big, tangled(缠结的)roots slow floodwaters and keep soil from washing away. But the trees were being cut down.
Adeline gathered her classmates to plant 200 mangrove young trees during a school break. They started a group called Friends of Nature, which works to keep the area’s biodiversity(生物多样性), fight against climate change, and help people realize the importance of the environment. They even started a project to get clean energy to remote villages.
Today, Adeline attends college, studying how businesses can help the environment.
Remember: every one of us can be a hero for the environment!

In a history class, Mrs. Bartlett asked the students to make a poster (海报) in groups. She told the students to write the names of three friends they wanted in one group and she would think about their choices.
The next day, Karma was told to be in a group she would never want—the boy who was too weak in English, and the two girls who wore strange clothes. Oh, how she wanted to be with her friends. With tears in her eyes, Karma walked up to Mrs. Bartlett. She looked at Karma and seemed to know what Karma was there for. Karma said that she should be in the “good” group. The teacher gently (温柔地) placed a hand on Karma’s shoulder. “I know what you want, Karma,” she said. “But your group needs you. I need you to help them. Only you can help them.” Karma was surprised and moved. The teacher’s words encouraged her.
“Will you help them ” the teacher asked. “Yes,” Karma replied. Then she bravely walked over to her group. She sat down and they started. Each of them did a part according to their interests. Halfway through the week, Karma felt herself enjoying her group. They did a good job together. The group members weren’t thought to be excellent just because no one cared enough about them except Mrs. Bartlett.
At last, the group got an A, but Karma thought they should hand the A back to Mrs. Bartlett. She was the one who should truly receive it. Mrs. Bartlett brought out the potential (潜能) in the four of her students.

88.What does the writer plan to do with his phone after the experiment
89.Would you like to follow the writer’s example Why or why not (Please give two reasons.)
