一、阅读选择
1.阅读理解
My
friend feels that every kid before a certain age(not
sure what that age really is)can't make his own
decisions, but I don't agree. I feel that young children have the ability to
choose, and parents need to provide them with the tools to make that choice. With
these tools, children can make decisions to benefit themselves and make
themselves happy. I have always encouraged my children to make their own
decisions. However, sometimes things change—usually
when they go to school. When they are at school, do they have choices about
things, such as what to learn and how to learn It is as if the children are
not allowed to make their own decisions. Decisions are made for them! Will they
be able to make decisions by themselves when they grow older Many parents feel
that it is easier to teach than to give children space and time to learn on
their own. Getting kids to make decisions and to learn from the wrong ones
takes a long time. I guess there is still a lot to learn about being a parent.
(1)We know that the writer's friend _________.
A.has the same idea as the writer
B.always encourages children to make their own decisions
C.believes that children will know how to make a decision when they grow older
D.hopes that some changes should take place at school
(2)The underlined word "benefit" most probably means "___________" in Chinese.
A.使高兴 B.使受益 C.使忍让 D.使动摇
(3)According to the writer, what should parents do for their children
A.Make decisions for them.
B.Help them to make the right decisions.
C.Let them make any decision.
D.Help them change their decisions.
(4)What can we infer from this passage
A.Many children are not given enough space and time to learn on their own.
B.The writer's children always like to make decisions by themselves.
C.The writer's children can choose what to learn at school.
D.It is easier for parents to teach their children to make decisions.
(5)What is the passage mainly about
A.About what children should learn at school.
B.About the decisions children make at school.
C.About children making decisions.
D.About how to teach children.

Our factories and homes burn coal and oil. Every year we have forest fires somewhere. Many scientists believe that the weather is changing.
The earth will perhaps be warmed by about 7℃ at the South Pole(极) and the North Pole. The ice will be melt(融化). The sea level(平面) will rise by about 7 meters. As a result, water will cover cities like London, Tokyo and New York. Some ports(港口) and towns along the coasts will disappear under water.
Some other scientists think that the dust, smoke and pollution from coal, wood and oil fires will block out(封闭) the ultraviolet rays(紫外线). Then the earth will become colder and great sheets of ice will cover Europe and North America.
When chemicals in the air mix with rain, we have acid(酸) rain. Acid rain can bring us great harm. It destroys(破坏) forests and kills life in lakes and rivers.
People are beginning to see how serious the problem is. They find it important to work with nature instead of against it. They are trying to save the earth in many different ways. But one of the most important things to do is to make people understand that saving the earth is saving ourselves.
(1)What do our factories and homes do

(3)Ice at the poles will if the earth gets warmer.
A.become thicker by seven meters B.cover cities like London and Tokyo
C.raise the sea level by 7 degrees D.become water and make the sea rise
(4)What can we learn from the third paragraph
A.The dust together with pollution from coal, wood and oil fires will bring us more heat from the sun.
B.The ultraviolet rays will come more because of the dust and pollution from fires.
C.According to the scientists, the change in weather hardly has anything to do with the pollution.
D.As a result of the dust and pollution from coal, wood and oil fires, the earth will become colder.

We can make mistakes at any age. Some mistakes
we make are about money, but most mistakes are about people. "Did Jerry
really care when I broke up with Helen " "When I got that great job,
did Jim really feel good about it, as a fiend Or did he envy my luck " "And
Paul— why didn't I pick up that he was friendly just because I had a car "
When we look back, doubts like these can make us feel bad. But when we look
beck, it's too late. Why do we go wrong about our friends— or our enemies
Sometimes what people say hides their real meaning. And if we don't really
listen, we miss the feeling behind the words. Suppose someone tells you, "You're
a lucky dog." Is he really on your side If he says, "You're a lucky
guy" or "You're a lucky gal," that's being friendly. But "lucky
dog" There's a bit of envy in those words. Maybe he doesn't see it
himself. But bringing in the "dog" bit puts you down a little. What
he may be saying is that he doesn't think you deserve your luck.
How can you tell the real meaning behind
someone's words One way is to take a good look at the person talking. Do his
words fit the way he looks Does what he says square with the tone of voice
His posture The look in his eyes Stop and think. The minute you spend thinking
about the real meaning of what people say to you may save another mistake.
(1)The questions in the first paragraph show us that the speaker .
A.feels happy, thinking of how nice his friends were to him
B.feels he may not have “read” his friends' true feelings correctly
C.thinks it was a mistake to have broken up with his girl friend Helen
D.is sorry that his friends let him down
(2)From the example "You're a lucky dog", we can learn that .
A.is just being friendly
B.expresses the same meaning as "You're a lucky guy." or "You're a lucky gal."
C.sometimes the words used by the speaker give a tip to the feeling behind the words
D.the word "dog" shouldn't be used to describe a person
(3)The passage tries to tell you how to .
A.avoid mistakes about money and friends
B.bring the "dog" bit into our conversation
C.be friendly to other people
D.avoid mistakes in understanding what people tell you
(4)In listening to a person, the important thing is .
A.to notice his tone, his posture, and the look in his eye
B.to listen to how he pronounces his words
C.to check his words against his manner, his tone of voice and his posture
D.not to believe what he says
(5)If you follow the writer's advice, you would .
A.be able to get the real meaning of people's words
B.avoid any mistakes while talking with people who envy you
C.not lose real friends who say things that do not please you
D.be able 1o observe people as they are talking to you

Taking care of pets can be a great way to teach children responsibility, but it's important to be realistic (现实的).If you're keen on bringing an animal into your home and you've designed a plan for its proper care, here are some choices.
FISH
First-time owners should consider getting cold-water fish as no tank (鱼缸)heater is required. They should research what kinds of fish get along in the same tank, and be aware of life expectancies—some goldfish can live up to 20 years.
RABBITS
Though rabbits, or nickname bunnies, may seem like a lovely choice, they can live up to ten years and require an amount of care similar to that of a dog or cat. They have their special diet needs, and often don't behave well around small children. Each year, quite a lot of Easter bunnies become homeless when families feel tired of them.
GUINEAPIGS(豚鼠,荷兰猪)
These small animals are ideal starter pets. Their cages must be cleaned daily, and they require toys to keep their ever growing teeth in check. Once they're used to the new way of life, guinea pigs need daily exercise in a small room without cracks or holes for escape. They don't want to be alone, but if you get two, make sure they're the same sex or they'll have babies.
BIRDS
Fond of a fixed timetable, birds require feeding at the same time each day. Cages should be cleaned daily and disinfected (消毒)weekly. Birds clean themselves by bathing in dishes of water and grow in cages big enough to spread their wings and fly a short time.
(1)All the following pets are recommended in the passage EXCEPT____________.
A.Rabbits B.Cats C.Guinea pigs D.Birds
(2)As a beginner to raise fish, you'd better____ in a tank.
A.get some cold-water fish, which get along well
B.get some warm-water fish, which get along well
C.get some cold-water fish and some warm-water fish
D.get only one cold-water fish or warm-water fish
(3)Rabbits can live up to____ years, as long as dogs or cats.
A.five B.ten C.twenty D.thirty
(4)____are necessary for Guinea pigs to play with or grow.
A.Tank heaters B.Cages
C.Toys D.Cracks or holes

A.regular B.repaired C.full D.mixed
(6)The passage is mainly written to____.
A.officers working for SPCA B.staff from the local zoo
C.reporters for the Animal World D.kids hoping to raise pets at home

People read books less often in these days.
With the invention of radio, television and most recently, the Internet and
computer games, it seems that reading books is no longer a popular activity. However,
I believe that books are an important part of our lives.
Books offer an outstanding wealth of
learning and at a cheaper price than taking a course.
Books can make people cleverer, because
heavy readers have greater knowledge of how things work and who or what people
were.
Everything in today's society requires
reading. Imagine trying to do something as simple as reading the directions
on a medicine bottle without good reading skills. Someone could not understand
them and become very sick or even die.
Even something as simple as walking or
driving through the city could become very dangerous without enough reading. Sometimes,
you must be able to understand what is written and explain the meaning of them;
Some people say that reading is a waste of
time and we can do better things with our time.
Even if we don't read books, we still read
every day, and reading books can strengthen (加强)our
abilities. Reading is one of the greatest things we can do in our spare time.
With a book, you can travel anywhere you
want, do anything you want, and talk to anyone you want. Reading is very
important in our lives, no matter how old you are. So I think people should
read books

Everyone talks about the
advantages of taking time out for "simple pleasures".
The idea is that we will be
happier if we often do inexpensive, easy-to-do activities.
However, the problem for
many of us is that we don't know what makes us happy. When I was in college, my
mother gave me some wise advice. She said, "Before you get married and live
with another person, you need to spend some time living by yourself. You need
to get to know yourself."
So I did exactly that. For
almost two years, I lived by myself, I found that I loved to spend hours
looking around in bookstores. I also loved to spend an afternoon just walking
around the city. And every so often, I needed the moments of pure silence.
But, of course, we all don't
enjoy the same things.
A simple pleasure for me
would be to spend an hour reading a book in my backyard. However, that same
activity would give my husband no pleasure. We are all so different.
Sometimes, we already knew
what makes us happy. However, as life gets busier and we get older, we put
aside our simple pleasures.
For example, I had to give
up playing the flute when I started working and had family responsibilities.
Playing my flute seemed selfish when no one else in my family could join, but
three years ago I returned to playing the flute. I regret having ever stopped.
Simple pleasures are
neither simple nor common. Our simple pleasures are a reflection of who we are.
They are different activities that give each of us joy.
Certainly there are some
common topics-such as being out in nature, doing something creative, or
enjoying music and literature - but beyond that, each of us has to find out
what it is that feeds our souls.
That isn't always easy in a
world in which we have to consider other people's needs and opinions as well as
our own, but enjoying simple pleasures is something that each of us deserves.
Think of it as your right,
and say to yourself, "Today, I'm going to discover what my simple
pleasures are."
(1)What is the writer's opinion about simple pleasures
A.They change as we grow older.
B.They can reflect our characters and spirits.
C.It's expensive and impossible to achieve them.
D.People with no responsibilities can enjoy them.
(2)What does the writer want to tell by sharing her experience of living alone
A.Wise people often take their mothers' advice.
B.A couple don't necessarily share the same interest.
C.It's important to live alone before getting married.
D.It's worth spending time alone enjoying simple pleasures.
(3)What can we learn from the writer's experience of playing the flute
A.We should develop an interest that others can take part in.
B.Making our family happy is better than making ourselves happy.
C.Family responsibilities are more important than our own interests.
D.Keeping our interests alive is a good method to make ourselves happy.
(4)What is the main idea of the last two paragraphs
A.The writer encourages readers to get simple pleasures actively.
B.The writer suggests readers pay no attention to others' opinions.
C.The writer teaches readers to balance others' needs with their own needs.
D.The writer reminds readers to realize simple pleasures are the most important part of life.
(5)What is the best title for this passage
A.Find Out Who You Are. B.Consider Your Own Needs.
C.Live Alone to Enjoy Life. D.Discover Your Own Pleasure.
18.阅读下列短文,然后从A, B, C, D四个选项中选出能回答问题或完成所给句子的最佳选项。
I lived in Hollywood.
You may think people in such an attractive, fun—filled place are happier than others. If so,
you have some mistaken ideas about the nature of happiness.
Many people still equate
happiness with fun. The truth is that fun and happiness have little
or nothing in common. Fun is what we experience during an act. Happiness is
what we experience after an act. It's a deeper, more long-lasting feeling.
Going to a ball game, watching a movie or television, are fun activities that
help us relax, forget our problems for a while and maybe even laugh. But they
do not bring happiness, because their positive feelings end when the fun ends.
I have often thought
that if Hollywood stars have a role to play,
it is to teach us that happiness has nothing to do with fun. These rich
people have enjoyed exciting parties, fancy cars, expensive homes, everything
that spells "happiness". But those famous people often tell of the
unhappiness hidden behind all their fun: broken marriages, troubled children,
and long-time loneliness.
If one believes that a
fun-filled life without pain means happiness, he will probably not achieve real
happiness. If fun and pleasure are equated with happiness, then pain must be
equated with unhappiness. But, in fact, the opposite is true: More often than
not, things that lead to happiness
usually cause some pain.
As a result, many
people avoid the very efforts that are the reason for true happiness. They are
afraid of the pain necessarily brought by such things as marriage, raising
children, professional achievement, and self-improvement.
(1)The underlined words "equate…with" in paragraph 2 most closely mean _______.
A.differ…from B.share…with C.exchange…for D.regard…as
(2)In paragraph, the author explains the differences between fun and happiness mainly by _______.
A.telling a story B.comparing
C.predicting D.describing a process
(3)In the author's opinion, those Hollyland stars _______.
A.enjoy happiness because they are rich and famous
B.lead a troubled and lonely life
C.fail to enjoy happiness though living in comfort
D.would prefer unhappiness to success
(4)It is difficult for people to find real happiness because they _______.
A.believe happiness is the fun life free of pain
B.find pain can't be avoided
C.fear to lose what they already have in life
D.believe true happiness lies in efforts and pain
(5)The main purpose of the text is to _______.
A.tell the differences between happiness and fun
B.show the true meaning of happiness
C.discourage people to have fun activities
D.advise people on how to find their real life
