Robbie Gay is a young boy with a kind heart. He had a horrible start to life, hospitalized twice with brain injuries before entering the foster(寄养) care system. When he was finally adopted by his parents, he was so hurt by his experiences that he was unable to cry.
However, he found therapy(治疗)in a most unlikely place—his local animal shelter. There he took comfort in caring for the older dogs who’d been left behind. “People don’t want older dogs. They only want puppies, “Robbie explained. His ability to empathize(移情)with the older dogs obviously comes from his own shocking experience, as his mom shared, “He knows what it’s like not to be loved and cared for.”
Now in a safe and loving home, he’s able to open his heart completely to these unfortunate dogs and practice compassion. It was this kindness that led him to find his tears again when one of his foster dogs died.
One of the difficulties in caring for the older dogs is that many don’t stay alive for long. But Robbie insists on staying with them right up until they pass away, as he quite rightly says, “I don’t think of when they’re going, I think of how they feel right now.”
Robbie is unusual in that he not only wants to care for aging dogs he also hopes to foster children when he grows up. He truly shows compassion and understanding, even if it leaves him heartbroken when his four-legged friends depart too soon. Hopefully, Robbie will continue to care for others, through his beautiful heart, continue to heal and feel loved with his wonderful furry family and the human one!

Todmorden is an ordinary town in England. In less than two years, it has changed the way it produces its food and the way its residents think about the pared with 18 months ago, a third more townspeople now grow their own vegetables, almost 7 in 10 now buy local produce regularly, and 15 times as many people are keeping chickens. “Our aim is to make our town completely self-sufficient in food production,” said Pam Warburst, who planned the project, Incredible Edible.
The change started 18 months ago. Nick Green, who runs a company that provides workspace for local artists took on the job of doing the planting. He chose the first land in the middle of the town and it attracted plenty of attention. “We wanted everyone to see what we were doing, so they could ask questions and finally join in.” he said.
Incredible Edible was originally funded out of the participants’ (参与者) own pockets. “We were very clear that we didn’t want to look at what grants (拨款) were available and change our projects to suit them,” said Mr. Green. “We felt that what would work was to start with the town and what it needed. We’d look for money later on.” What the project leaders found was that a lot could be achieved with small amounts of cash. And awards and grants have followed.
“The important thing about Incredible Edible is that it involves (影响) everyone in the town and it’s a grass-roots project. I honestly believe it’s a good plan for every neighborhood. What we’re doing here could easily be rolled out anywhere. It’s all about involving people, giving them ownership, letting them realize it can be fun and interesting and that the food is delicious, and giving them space to set up their own ideas and run with them.”

Scientists say extreme rainfall happens more often this summer. Nick Goltz is head of the UConn Plant Diagnostic Laboratory at the University of Connecticut in Storrs, Connecticut. He said too much water can mean dead plants in a garden though water is a must for plant life.
Goltz explained that flooding cuts off the oxygen supply which leads to root-rot (根腐) diseases. And then plants cannot pull enough water to survive. The result is yellow, weakening leaves, which would usually show a plant’s need for water. But after flooding, those same signs mean that roots under water cannot function in really wet conditions.
Avoid walking on wet soil if your garden has been affected by flooding. Wait until the soil has mostly dried before looking at the damage. Adding any weight or pressure to wet soil can cause even more oxygen to be pressed out from around struggling roots. Plants weakened or stressed by flood water can more easily get diseases and unwanted insects. So keep an eye on them and treat problems as they come, which could be months later. Broken tree branches should be removed immediately. But save any major removal of leaves and branches for when conditions improve to avoid further weakening an already stressed tree.
Can flooded fruits vegetables, and other crops still be eaten Goltz said, “If the part you’re eating touches the water, then it’s probably hazardous, even if washed or cooked.” “That is because in addition to bacteria (细菌) from standing water, runoff from nearby gardens, chemicals, and other waste could be present,” Goltz added.
Flooded soil loses nutrients (营养) and can damage the way water flows through it. After dealing with your plants’ needs, turn your attention to the flooded soil and take some actions to make it repaired. Mixing in sand will improve the way water flows through it. If you live in an area that easily floods, there are steps you can take to avoid or lessen future damage, such as growing vegetables in higher areas or raised beds. Or you could direct water away from the plants you care about most.
32. What message can we get from Goltz’s words in paragraph 1
A. A rainbow comes after rain. B. Never fish in troubled water.
C. Too much of anything is good for nothing. D. Always make preparations for a rainy day.
33. Why should walking on wet soil in the garden be avoided
A. It might harden the soil. B. It might break struggling roots.
C. It will add bacteria to the roots. D. It will remove more oxygen from the plants.
34. What does the underlined word “hazardous” in paragraph 4 mean
A. Unsafe. B. Special. C. Tasty. D. Juicy.
35. What are people advised to do in the last paragraph
A. Grow high crops. B. Repair the soil.
C. Protect the plants. D. Build an ecosystem.

Sam was a junior high school student. He lived in a community in Charlotte and usually had little exposure to country life. So much of what he knew about plants came from text-books. Sam was a kind-hearted person. He longed for a chance to explore nature and he wanted to do his part to beautify the world.
Finally, the opportunity came. On Arbor Day (植树节), his class organized a trip to a local village to plant trees. Sam was excited about it and couldn’t wait to tell his mom the good news. So the next day, Sam and his mom went to buy some tools for planting trees, including a shovel(铲), a bucket, gloves and so on.
On the day of the event, Sam and his classmates arrived early at the starting point. It was a beautiful day and everyone looked particularly happy. With the tools in hand, Sam got into the bus with everyone else and headed off to their destination.
As soon as they reached the village, all the students were divided into three teams by their teacher. One team was responsible for planting the trees, one team for shovelling the soil and one team for watering the trees. At the teacher’s command, everyone started to do their job.
However, it was the first time that many of the students had taken part in planting trees, so they had no idea about how to start. Of course, Sam was one of them. Fortunately, their teacher was a middle-aged man from the countryside who had some knowledge of planting trees. In order to set an example to the students, the teacher started to plant trees himself. After watching the teacher plant the trees, everyone also became busy. Before long, they planted hundreds of trees. Sam watched very carefully, not wanting to miss any of the details. Finally, Sam learned how to plant trees by himself and felt happy.

Can flooded fruits, vegetables, and other crops still be eaten Goltz said, “If the part you’re eating touches the water, then it’s probably hazardous, even if washed or cooked.” “That is because in addition to bacteria (细菌) from standing water, runoff from nearby gardens, chemicals, and other waste could be present,” Goltz added.
C 33. D 34. A 35. B
根据第一段的最后一句“He said too much water can mean dead plants in a garden though water is a must for plant life. (他说,尽管水分是植物生长所必需的,但是水分过多则会导致花园中的植物死亡) ”由此可推断,Goltz的意思是事情要适得其中,许多事情过犹不及。故选C。
【33题详解】
细节理解题。根据第三段中的“Avoid walking on wet soil if your garden has been affected by flooding. Wait until the soil has mostly dried before looking at the damage. Adding any weight or pressure to wet soil can cause even more oxygen to be pressed out from around struggling roots.(如果你的园圃受到洪水的影响,避免在潮湿的土壤上行走。等到土壤基本干透后再看损坏情况。在潮湿的土壤上增加任何重量或压力都会导致更多的氧气从挣扎的根系周围被压出)”可知,如果你的园圃受到了洪水的影响,要避免在潮湿的土壤上行走,否则会导致根系周围的氧气外漏。故选D。
【34题详解】
词句猜测题。 根据第四段中““That is because in addition to bacteria (细菌) from standing water, runoff from nearby gardens, chemicals, and other waste could be present,” Goltz added. (Goltz补充说:“这是因为除了来自死水的细菌外,附近花园的径流、化学物质和其他废物也可能存在。”)”可知,受涝严重的果蔬会存在来自积水的细菌,除此之外,还会受到附近园圃的径流、化学物质和其他废物等的污染,因此即便清洗干净或者煮熟,也可能是有害的。由此可推断,这里指受涝严重的果蔬是不安全的,划线词hazardous意为“危险的,有害的”,unsafe与其同义。故选A。
根据最后一段中的“After dealing with your plants’ needs, turn your attention to the flooded soil and take some actions to make it repaired. (在处理了植物的需求之后,把注意力转向被淹的土壤,并采取一些措施使其修复)”可知,作者建议人们在处理好植物的需求问题后,将注意力转移到受涝的土壤上,采取一些行动来修复土壤。故选B。
