Popular Self-Help Books
Want to be happier, healthier and more successful Here are four popular self-help books to get you going.
How to Win Friends & Influence People —by Dale Carnegie
This is the book that started the self-help type. Carnegie says financial success is 15% professional knowledge and 85% ‘‘the ability to express ideas and inspire people’’. Here are a couple of his top tips: Let the other person feel that the idea is his or hers; talk about your own mistakes before blaming the other person.
Who Moved My Cheese —by Spencer Johnson
This book is about how to adapt to (适应) change in your life. It’s a story about two mice and two ‘‘little people’’(who represent humans). They all live in a maze (迷宫) and spend their days eating cheese. But one day they discover that their regular supply of cheese has disappeared. The mice immediately start searching the maze for more cheese but the two ‘‘little people’’ get angry. Finally, one of the ‘‘little people’’ accepts the situation and decides to look for a new cheese supply.
The Millionaire Next Door —by Thomas Stanley
The author of this book spent years interviewing American millionaires to figure out the secrets of their success. And he discovered that most millionaires don’t live a life in an expensive way. They’re rich because they live below their means and reinvest what they earn.
59 Seconds — by Richard Wiseman
This is a self-help book with a difference. Wiseman, a scientist, says 59 Seconds is about the ‘‘science of self-help’’. And he uses science to show many self-help ideas are false. Other tips in the book are: If you want to eat more healthily, hang a mirror in your kitchen. This can reduce unhealthy eating by 35%. If you want to be more creative, put a plant on your desk.

From climbing a human ladder to swimming with the crocodiles(鳄鱼), there's nothing this Spanish botanist wouldn't do in the name of plants.
Carlos Magdalena the Spanish botanist tried to ignore the "Crocodile Danger" sign as he walked into the lagoon. Based in the hot houses and labs of London’s Kew Gardens, he thought he’d spotted a new waterlily species and it wouldn’t be the first time he’d risked his life doing his job. His mission is to save the world’s most endangered plants. As well as Harrison Ford’s film character, the great gardener is also known as the Messiah, the Code Breaker and the Plant Whisperer. He’s suffered dehydration in the planet’s largest desert, driven through rivers to reach an uncommon vegetation and experienced sickness in the Peruvian Andes, where he climbed a human ladder next to a towering drop to reach a rare flower.
“Directly or indirectly plants provide the air we breathe, medicines, clothes, shelter, food and drink,” he says in a firm voice. “Without them we wouldn't be here. It’s as simple as that.”
Carlos grew up rolling the peaks and valleys of northern Spain in search of natural wonders but quickly learned all was not well.
There are some 400,000 plant species, with many more waiting to be discovered, and it’s estimated that a quarter of them are facing dangers of dying out. “They need our help and we should use whatever means possible to ensure their survival.”
Often peering into microscope late into night, Carlos marked himself out in the botanic world. Before long he came to understand that plants have a way of talking and to understand their needs, you had to listen to them. His work was daunting(令人怯步的) but he eventually triumphed. “It was like scoring the winning goal in a World Cup final,” he says.
24. What does the underlined sentence in paragraph 2 suggest
A. He was good at gardening. B. He played a role in the film.
C. He was famous for his plant-saving work. D. He got along very well with the other three.
25. When he was young, Carlos ________.
A. learned all the plants B. took risks to look for plants
C. watched over different plants D. displayed intense interest in plants
26. Which words can best describe Carlos
A. Creative and demanding. B. Devoted and considerate.
C. Brave and determined. D. Stubborn and caring.
27. What will probably be talked about in the next paragraph
A. His cooperation with other plants-keepers. B. His scoring a goal in the World Cup final.
C. His future study on preserving endangered plants. D. His successful examples of saving endangered plants.
C 25. D 26. C 27. D

根据第二段划线部分前句“His mission is to save the world’s most endangered plants.”(他的使命是拯救世界上最濒危的植物。)可知“As well as Harrison Ford’s film character, the great gardener is also known as the Messiah, the Code Breaker and the Plant Whisperer.”(除了哈里森·福特(Harrison Ford)的电影角色外,这位伟大的园丁还被称为弥赛亚、破译者和植物语者。)

Toy trends may come and go, but one thing remains unchanged: Kids love to ride in wagons. Never was this made clearer to Adam Garone than when his then 3-year-old niece, Charlie was diagnosed with severe brain disease. During her eight-month stay in the Rady Children's Hospital in San Diego, the medical staff shuttled her around to chemotherapy treatments and MRI scans in a Radio Flyer wagon.
"The wagon was allowing Charlie to feel a little bit like a kid," says Garone, CEO of the Starlight Children's Foundation. "She could smile and have fun." Garone did not know it then, but this personal experience would greatly inform his involvement with Radio Flyer the following year.
It was in 2019 that Garone and Radio Flyer CEO Robert Pasin decided to cooperate to improve the wagons for hospital settings. The newly patented design, the Hero Wagon, has been adapted specifically for sick kids transportation.
The new Hero Wagon features a medical-grade, easy-to-disinfect material, instead of the classic metal frame. The design is foldable, allowing hospital staff to collapse the wagon for storage and keep more on site. An IV support (静脉输液支架) on the back was added so that a nurse or family member can pull the wagon without also needing to hang on to equipment poles. Lastly, the team included a clear plastic bag on the outer side--a dedicated spot for kids to put a drawing or photo, therefore giving them a sense of ownership over their wagon.
The Hero Wagon is now in hospitals across 33 U.S. states. "It's just been incredible," says Garone, "We've gotten hundreds of photos and stories through the years from families telling us how the Radio Flyer wagon was a bright spot for them."
28. What does the underlined word “shuttle” in paragraph 1 mean
A. Transported. B. Held. C. Cared. D. Adopted.
29. When was Charlie diagnosed with brain disease

C. Good-looking and popular. D. Environment-friendly and cheap.
31. What’s the main idea of the passage
A. Kids show consistent love for wagons. B. The hero wagon improves hospital settings.
C. Adam made a contribution to medical service. D. The hero wagon delights sick kids in hospital.
A 29. B 30. B 31. D

根据第一段中“During her eight-month stay in the Rady Children's Hospital in San Diego”(她在圣地亚哥雷迪儿童医院住了八个月)以及第二段中“but this personal experience would greatly inform his involvement with Radio Flyer the following year.”(但这段个人经历极大地启发了他第二年参与Radio Flyer的工作。)和第三段中“It was in 2019 that Garone and Radio Flyer CEO Robert Pasin decided to cooperate…”(2019年,加隆和Radio Flyer的首席执行官罗伯特·帕辛决定合作……)

The design is foldable, allowing hospital staff to collapse the wagon for storage and keep more on site. 【31
根据文章大意以及第一段中“but one thing remains unchanged: Kids love to ride in wagons”(但有一件事是不变的:孩子们喜欢坐四轮马车)以及倒数第二段中“therefore giving them a sense of ownership over their wagon.”(因此让他们对自己的马车有一种归属感。)和最后一段中“telling us how the Radio Flyer wagon was a bright spot for them.”(告诉我们无线电飞行车是他们的一个亮点。)
D
When we meet someone for the first time we usually get a vague sense of what kind of person they are by the way they shake hands, talk, or walk. In the age of social networking, however, first impressions are sometimes made even before we actually meet someone in person -- that is, by looking at their profile photo.
According to a recent study, these social images say a lot about our personality. In the study, a group of researchers from the University of Pennsylvania in the US used software to analyze the profile pictures of 66,000 users of one US social platform. At the same time, about 434 participants were asked to complete a survey about their personality type.
According to the results, open people are more likely to pose in an unusual way and use objects such as glasses or a guitar in their profile photo because they enjoy new and exciting experiences. Meanwhile, neurotic people often hold back their negative emotions. They try to avoid showing their face; instead, they use an image of something like a pet, a car, or a building. That’s because neurotic people are strongly influenced by the ‘‘strong social norm (规范) against a very sad or angry appearance in profile pictures.’’
Apart from the objects in profile pictures, the colors used in them also give us some information about the photo’s owner. For example, extraverts were found to have the most colorful profile images, as they want to emphasize their personality and show themselves off.
Daniel Preoiuc-Pietro from the University of Pennsylvania wrote in the research paper, ‘‘Social media photos usually represent an extension of one’s self, but they also allow a user to shape his or her own personality and idealized view.’’ So, when choosing a profile photo, maybe we should ask ourselves first what kind of image we’d like to show. After all, first impressions always last.
32. Why do neurotic people often avoid showing their face in their profile photo
A. Because they are fond of pets, cars and buildings.
B. Because they want to enjoy new experiences.
C. Because they don’t want to show their negative emotions.
D. Because they are not confident about themselves.
33. What does the underlined word in Para.4 refer to
A. Open people. B. Neurotic people.
C. Negative people. D. Popular people.
34. What is the writer’s attitude towards the choice of a profile photo
A. Casual. B. Cautious. C. Worried. D. Unclear.
35. What does this text mainly talk about
A. The importance of the first impression.
B. Some advice on how to choose a profile photo.
C. The difference between open people and neurotic people.
D. The relationship between one’s profile photo and his personality.
C 33. A 34. B 35. D
根据第三段中“Meanwhile, neurotic people often hold back their negative emotions. They try to avoid showing their face; instead, they use an image of something like a pet, a car, or a building. That’s because neurotic people are strongly influenced by the ‘‘strong social norm (规范) against a very sad or angry appearance in profile pictures.’’(与此同时,神经质人往往会抑制自己的负面情绪。他们尽量避免露面;相反,他们会使用宠物、汽车或建筑物之类的图像。这是因为神经质的人受到“强烈的社会规范”的强烈影响,“强烈的社会规范”反对在个人资料照片中出现非常悲伤或愤怒的表情。)”可知,神经质的人经常避免在个人资料照片中出现自己的脸,是因为他们表现出自己的负面情绪。故选C。
【33题详解】
词义猜测题。根据第三段“According to the results, open people are more likely to pose in an unusual way and use objects such as glasses or a guitar in their profile photo because they enjoy new and exciting experiences. (根据研究结果,开放的人更有可能以一种不同寻常的方式摆姿势,在他们的个人资料照片中使用眼镜或吉他等物品,因为他们喜欢新的和令人兴奋的体验。)” 和第四段中“to have the most colorful profile images, as they want to emphasize their personality and show themselves off.(要有最丰富多彩的头像,因为他们想要强调自己的个性和炫耀自己。)” 故选A。
根据最后一段中“when choosing a profile photo, maybe we should ask ourselves first what kind of image we’d like to show. After all, first impressions always last.(在选择照片时,也许我们应该先问自己想要展示什么样的形象。毕竟,第一印象总是持续的。)”可知,作者对个人照片选择的态度是“小心谨慎”。故选B。
【35题详解】
主旨大意题。根据第一段“When we meet someone for the first time, we usually get a vague sense of what kind of person they are by the way they shake hands, talk, or walk. In the age of social networking, however, first impressions are sometimes made even before we actually meet someone in person -- that is, by looking at their profile photo.(当我们第一次见到某人的时候,我们通常会对什么样的人有一种模糊的感觉,他们会握手、说话或走路。然而,在社交网络时代,第一印象有时甚至在我们真正遇到某人的时候就会出现——也就是说,通过看他们的个人资料照片。)”可知,本文论述的是“个人资料照片与人格的关系。”故选D。

【答案】36. C 37. E 38. A 39. F 40. D
根据前文“These two words can inspire both joy and fear in the hearts of students everywhere.(这两个字可以在各地的学生心中激起喜悦和恐惧)”可知,本段会分别说喜欢运动和恐惧运动的人,再根据后文“For others, it might feel like having to take part in something they aren’t good at.(对其他人来说,这可能就像不得不参加他们不擅长的事情一样)”可知,后文讲过恐惧运动的人,所以空处应是喜欢运动的人,所以C项“For many, sports day can be a great day of fun.(对许多人来说,运动会是很有趣的一天)”符合文意。故选C项。
由上文“They hope that by making sports days less competitive, children of all abilities will be encouraged to take part without fear of losing. Exercise and fitness is important for everyone, no matter how good at sport you are.(他们希望通过减少运动日的竞争性,激发所有能力的孩子参加运动,而不必担心失败。运动和健身对每个人来说都很重要,无论你在运动方面有多擅长)”可知,上文讲非竞争性运动让所有孩子不必担心失败,尽情地运动,这是它的益处,E选项“Everyone should be celebrated for trying and playing their part.(每个人都应该为自己的努力和发挥作用而庆祝)”承接上文讲非竞争性运动给孩子带来的益处。故选E项。
【38题详解】
由上文“However, some people feel that it’s important that sport has winners and that learning to lose is just as important as learning how to win.(然而,一些人认为运动有赢家很重要,学会输和学会如何赢一样重要)”和下文“Particularly, on a sports day which is your chance to really prove yourself!.(尤其是在运动日,这是你真正证明自己的机会! )”可知,上下文讲赢的重要性,A选项“What’s the point if no one wins (如果没有人赢,那有什么意义 )”体现了对赢得看重。故选A项。
分析设空可知,空处位于段首,起到引领全段的作用,是对本段的高度概括,所以根据后文“According to a 2017 survey by Families Online, 82% of parents say they prefer “traditional” competitive sports days. Many adults feel that children can learn valuable lessons in both winning and losing.(据家庭在线2017年的一项调查,82%的父母表示他们更喜欢“传统的”竞技体育日。许多成年人认为孩子可以从输赢中学到宝贵的经验)”可知,本段是在讲大部分人都同意上文提到的观点,特别是父母,所以F项“There are lots of people who agree with the idea—parents in particular!(有很多人同意这个想法,尤其是父母!)”
根据后文“We want to know your ideas.(我们想知道你的想法)”可推断,空处应是提了一个问题,此处才会说想知道你的想法,再根据前文“People have different ideas about whether it is the winning or the taking part that counts when it comes to school sports days.(当谈到学校运动会时,到底是获胜还是参与才是重要的,人们有不同的看法)”可知,本段主要是在讨论学校运动会,所以应该是针对学校运动会提问。所以D项“So, should School Sports Day be competitive or not (那么,学校运动会是否应该是竞争性的呢 )”符合文意。

Based in the hot houses and labs of London’s Kew Gardens he thought he’d spotted a new waterlily species and it wouldn’t be the first time he’d risked his life doing his job.

A. Light and foldable. B. safe and convenient.
C. Good-looking and popular. D. Environment-friendly and cheap.
31. What’s the main idea of the passage
A. Kids show consistent love for wagons. B. The hero wagon improves hospital settings.
C. Adam made a contribution to medical service. D. The hero wagon delights sick kids in hospital.
D
When we meet someone for the first time, we usually get a vague sense of what kind of person they are by the way they shake hands, talk, or walk.
