It’s easy to tell when most foods have gone bad: They’ll let you know with a different smell or look. But what about eggs There’s not much you can tell by simply looking at or smelling one. Here are a few ways to check if your eggs are still safe to eat.
You can do a float test to see if your eggs are bad. After enough time has passed, the egg will have enough air inside to make it float. Fill a bowl with water. Make sure that the bowl should be big enough to fully flood the egg, gently place your egg inside and see if it goes down or floats. If it floats, it’s old and you may want to throw it away. But, the USDA’s Food Safety and Inspection Service says an old egg may be perfectly safe to use. Break the egg into a bowl to see if it has changed smell and appearance before deciding to use or throw it. If the egg goes down and stands up, then it’s not very fresh but still safe to eat. If it goes down and falls to its side, then the egg is the freshest.
You can also perform a shake test to see if your eggs are bad. Hold an egg by your ear and shake it. If you hear nothing, your egg is OK. If you hear something moving around inside, it means the egg is no longer firm but rather old and watery. However, FSIS does not allow this test for freshness. Your best bet is the float test or, even easier, breaking the egg.
You can break the eggs to see if they have gone bad. A fresh egg should have a bright yellow or orange yolk that is more rounded than flat. If the colour of the yolk or white has changed, the egg is no good. If your eggs look good but smell bad, do not eat them.
4.According to a float test, which egg is the freshest
A. B. C. D.
5.If an egg is firm, it is usually ________.
A.old B.watery C.smelly D.fresh
6.What would the text talk about next
A.What if we eat bad eggs. B.Where to buy fresh eggs.
C.How to cook meals with eggs. D.Why we need to eat an egg every day.

Pyramid Surprise
Linda and I were born only a few days apart, so every year we plan a birthday party together. This year, our birthday theme (主题) was “Discover the Pyramids”.
“What about inviting Mary ” Linda asked.
Mary was lonely, and hadn’t made many friends, but she was better at math than anyone else in class.
“Hmm, she wears the same old trousers every day. How could she even afford a party dress ”
After school the next day, Linda handed me a box. “What’s that ” I asked.
“My birthday gift from my aunt. I thought it would be nice to give this to Mary,” Linda said.
I opened the box. Inside was a gift certificate (礼品券) for our favorite clothes store.
“Wow,” I gasped. We both knew how many cute clothes that would buy.
“So, are we going to just hand it to her ”
“How embarrassing that would be!” Linda answered.
She was right. Mary would be totally embarrassed if we gave her money for clothes.
“What if we ask our teacher…”
“Wait a second. I have an idea.” Linda said.
“What What ”

Buck did not read the newspapers, or he would know that trouble was coming.
In fact, trouble was on its way for every strong dog with warm long hair. This was because men, going through the Arctic(北极的) darkness, had discovered a yellow metal—gold. And because shipping and transportation(运输) companies were advertising the discovery, thousands of men were rushing into the Northland. These men wanted heavy dogs, with strong muscles(肌肉) for working and thick coats to protect them from the cold.
Buck lived at Judge Miller's house in the sunny-kissed Santa Clara Valley. There were big stables(马厩), long grape fields, fruit gardens and a big swimming pool. Buck ruled over the whole kingdom. Here he was born and here he had lived the four years of his life. He protected the Judge's sons and daughters at long midnight or early morning walks. On cold winter nights he lay at the Judge's feet in front of the warm library fire. He was king—king over everything, crawled(爬行的), walked, or flew at Judge Miller's place, including humans.
Buck was this kind of dog in the autumn of 1897, when the discovery of gold in the Klondike pulled men from all over the world into the frozen North. But Buck did not read the newspapers. He did not know that Manuel, one of gardener's helpers, was not to be trusted. Manuel loved to gamble(赌博). He believed he could win but he was doomed to failure.
On the night of Manuel's betrayal(背叛), no one saw him and Buck went off through the fields. Buck imagined it to be a relaxing walk. They arrived at a little train. A man talked with Manuel and money passed between them. Manuel tied a piece of thick rope around Buck's neck. Buck accepted it quietly. To be sure, it was unwanted, but Buck had learned to trust men he knew.
However, when the ends of the rope were placed in the stranger's hands, he barked. Then the rope tightened(收紧) painfully, his tongue hanging out of his mouth. Then his strength disappeared, his eyes grew dim(浑浊), and he knew nothing when the train pulled up. Two men threw him into the baggage car.

The folk art form, kuaiban, which has a long history, can be performed by a group or a single person. With one or two pairs of bamboo clappers—a kind of traditional Chinese musical instrument in their hands, the performers tell stories in the local dialect(方言). These stories are usually folk tales or about social life.
Recently, Liu Jiming and Wan Yifu made and shared three short videos by using kuaiban which were viewed about 4 million times. As a result, Liu and Wan have gained more than 1million followers on the Internet. They’ve created many new works to raise people’s awareness. Some of their works are about the danger of drunken driving and food safety. They also write stories to show respect to people who make contributions, such as traffic policemen.
According to Liu and Wan, people can understand kuaiban pieces without difficulty. The stories told in kuaiban pieces are close to people’s daily lives. Thus, they consider that it is a fun way to introduce the Chinese folk culture through kuaiban. And what matters to them is that both young people and old people begin to know the charm of the art form, kuaiban, which may not be paid much attention to, compared to other traditional art forms.
Folk art forms, like xiangsheng, pingshu and kuaiban, share something in common. These traditional art forms show the beauty and value of traditional Chinese culture so they should be known by more people and get to more areas. Luckily, through the Internet, new performers who go on sharing kuaiban pieces, like Liu and Wan are playing an active role. Hopefully these Chinese folk art forms will be alive with the times.
