Montreal has a unique culture, with its mixture of French and English. If you want to visit one of the best
cities in North America, this is the place for you.
The French
Most places in Canada are English-speaking, but Montreal is different. It is a city run by the French and for the French. If you want to work there, you have to speak French. The French and the English generally stay apart from each other. Most of the English can’t speak French and don’t want to learn; most of the French don’t like to speak
English. However, it is this “conflict” of cultures that makes Montreal interesting.
Food
The best and unique Canadian food comes from the French. For example, you can find “poutine” - a tasty quick snack. This French invention is my personal favorite, although I must warn you that it isn’t for everyone. The best way to experience poutine is to go north of Montreal to one of the ski resorts. Spend all day skiing. Then, when your body aches all over, go to a mountain bar with friends and have a hot chocolate and a plate of poutine. You
will understand why it’s the best food in the world.
Music & Cinema
Montreal is also great for music. There’s a famous jazz festival in the summer. You need a pass for most of the shows, which are usually performed outdoors during the day and night. But wherever you are in Montreal, you can
hear the music while you are walking in the streets.
1. Where is this text probably taken from
A. A travel plan. B. A travel brochure.
C. An encyclopedia. D. A travel journal.
2. When will you enjoy poutine the most
A. After a day-long sightseeing.
B. After a tiring skiing experience.
C. When your body aches all over.
D. When you have a hot chocolate.
3. What is necessary if you intend to makea living in Montreal
A. Mastering skiing skills. B. Favoring different cultures.
C. Understanding jazz music. D. Communicating in French.

At 6.00 p.m. on Thursday, in Waterstones in Piccadilly, London, staff (全体雇员) were running around with bowls of jellybeans and bottles of lemon juice. Five minutes later, people of all ages started to come through the doors. Some dressed up as characters from the books! “This is the third event I’ve been to,” said 28-year-old Alex. “Last year they changed the second floor into Diagon Alley.” In many of the chain’s 275 branches across the UK, similar scenes were taking place. “Our first wizards (巫师) have arrived for Harry Potter night,” said staff at the
Bradford store.
But Harry Potter night wasn’t the only cause for celebration for staff and customers. The previous day, Waterstones had announced that it was back in profit for the first time since 2011, under the leadership of its very own wizard. James Daunt. Daunt was already a successful bookseller. He was brought in to rescue the Waterstones
chain when it was about to close down.
When Daunt took over Waterstones, his first task was to cut costs. Then he had to make the stores more attractive and improve the lighting. Coffee shops were opened inside the stores, and events were held, such as the now-famous Harry Potter nights, or talks by authors. But the biggest change was that Daunt gave each store the power to choose what books to sell, and to choose the prices for different books. This made a big difference. Sales
went up because shops were storing more books that interested local customers.
Daunt is confident about the future of bookshops. “People love buying books,” he said. “It’s a physical pleasure that customers don’t get when they shop online. If we keep creating shops that do that, it doesn’t matter what goes on online. High streets and shops are part of the heart of the community. People will always want to go
to shops.”
4. Why did people come to Waterstones in Piccadilly on Thursday
A. To buy the Harry Potter books. B. To attend a Harry Potter night.
C. To meet the author of books. D. To look around Diagon Alley.
5. What was another reason for Waterstones to celebrate
A. A wizard was visiting the store. B. The chain started to make money.
C. The bookshops would open again. D. James Daunt became the owner.
6. What was the biggest change Daunt made
A. Making stores smaller. B. Choosing the books himself.
C. Giving stores more freedom. D. Selling books to local customers.
7. Why does Daunt think bookshops have a good future
A. They provide cheaper books for people.
B. Online shopping will not last forever.
C. They can recommend suitable books.
D. They provide what online booksellers cannot.

Robots used to be found only in science fiction. In the 1960s, the animated (动画的) space-age family the
Jetsons had a robotic maid who could do household chores. In the 2014 movie Big Hero 6, the robot Baymax could diagnose and heal illnesses instantly. In real life robots function in many manufacturing and household situations.
In the field of medicine, robot patients help train doctors and nurses by pretending they have a variety of health
conditions. Now robots are finding a home in the food service industry.
The global pandemic and resulting economic crisis have created a lack of restaurant workers. Since restaurants
don’t have enough workers, the remaining staff must work harder. Regardless, customers face longer wait times,
fewer menu choices and higher prices. Some businessmen are lending a robotic hand in the form of server robots.
These robots are not exactly modeled after Rosey, the Jetsons’ robotic household servant, but they are pretty clever.
Server robots come in several different varieties. Many have a design that looks like a rolling cart. One model
named Bella even has a cute cat-like face. Many are fairly short and shaped like R2D2 of Star Wars fame. They,
designed to deliver dishes, are also just the right height for customers to easily reach them. Restaurant owners are
finding server robots ideal for performing repetitive tasks, however many there are. They can not only deliver
delicious food to hungry customers, but also fetch back dirty dishes at the end of the meal.
Perhaps you’re wondering about issues such as the cost and safety factors. Concerning the price, a server robot costs from a few thousand to several thousand dollars. And in 2021, a restaurant even rented one for as low as $15
per day. Regarding safety, special sensors on the robots keep them from crashing into customers. Because there
aren’t enough restaurant workers, filling positions with these robotic servers is easy. Don’t be surprised if you see
one rolling up to your table soon.
8. What’s the purpose of the first paragraph
A. To give some examples. B. To make comparisons.
C. To state the development. D. To introduce the topic.
9. What’s the main reason for the lack of restaurant workers
A. The rise of labor costs. B. The hard work in the restaurant.
C. The influence of the pandemic. D. The drop of food service industry.
10. What can we infer about server robots from paragraph 3
A. Customers will be satisfied with the server robots’ service.
B. A server robot may look like a rolling cart with an ugly face.
C. Server robots are not qualified for doing many repetitive tasks.
D. Server robots will help clean dirty dishes at the end of the meal.
11. What’s the writer’s attitude towards the use of robotic servers
A. Doubtful. B. Positive.
C. Worried. D. Objective.

When living or travelling internationally, we notice the differences between cultures before seeing the similarities. At first, some differences are easy to spot. Over time, however, there are some curious similarities between how people in the UK and China communicate. Indeed, international residents in both countries often
complain about having to read what local people really mean, because it often differs from what is said.
In the UK, outsiders often get confused when they realise that a person making rude comments was actually showing love. In situations like this, context is everything. Likewise, in China, outsiders must infer most meaning
from context and from what is not said, rather than from what is. Otherwise, misunderstandings happen.
The UK and China contexts share further cultural features, which greatly influence how people communicate, including the cultural trait ( 特 点 ) of non-conflict. The British will do everything to avoid conflict. They wil probably tell the waiter it was lovely even when served with poor quality food. This cultural trait can cause major misunderstandings. For example, a British business partner who is deeply unhappy with your proposal will probably say “there are just a couple of small concerns,” rather than telling you that the entire proposal is
unsatisfactory.
Chinese communication shows a very similar conflict prevention. Often challenges, errors, mistakes, or problems remain completely taboos (禁忌) as topics of discussion, even though everyone knows of their existence. Instead, people talk about working towards further goals or objectives, rather than directly admit that the current situation is far from satisfactory. Likewise, Chinese people like to keep a sense of harmony within all environments, and so avoid open criticism of each other. This is very similar to the way that a British person might tell you a colleague “is very confident” rather than that they are rude. In this sense, the British and Chinese can
appreciate each other for harmony.
12. What does the author suggest in Paragraph 2
A. Polite comments are encouraged. B. Learning what is not said is difficult.
C. Context is important in communication. D. Misunderstandings often happen among outsiders.
13. What will the British and the Chinese probably both agree with
A. Talking over taboos in discussions. B. Preventing misunderstandings in work.
C. Avoiding discussing one’s mistakes in public. D. Making use of cultural traits in communication.
14. How does the author develop this passage
A. By using figures. B. By making comparison.
C. By listing reasons. D. By making classifications.
15. Which is the most suitable title for the passage
A. Cultural Context B. Conflict Prevention
C. Cultural Differences D. Communication Puzzles

What do you do when you have a few minutes to spare If you’re like many people, you seize the opportunity
to do puzzles on your phone. 1 Usually, they can be divided into certain types and here are four of the
most common.
Word puzzles
One of the most popular word puzzles — the crossword — has been around for nearly 110 years. Crosswords
can be done with paper and pencil or online. Sometimes word puzzles involve finding new words within a large
group of letters. This type of word puzzle is called a word search. Word puzzles usually test your vocabulary.
2
Mechanical puzzles
Mechanical puzzles have pieces that must be arranged in some way. The world’s best-selling puzzle, the
Rubik’s Cube, is a mechanical puzzle. As of 2020, over 450 million Rubik’s Cubes had been sold.
Jigsaw puzzles also fall into this type. 3 Jigsaw puzzles have from two to over 550,000 pieces — the
largest one on record.
Logic puzzles
4 Mine Finder is an example of logic puzzles. In Mine Finder players must think clearly to determine where the mines are hidden in a grid(方格).
Math puzzles
Math puzzles involve numbers, words or objects and the use of math. Surprisingly, the ever–popular Candy
Crush is classified as a math puzzle. 5
There are many other kinds of puzzles. But no matter which you prefer, puzzles are a great way to spend your
time.
A. People have been interested in puzzles for many reasons.
B. They typically involve putting pieces in the right place to form a picture.
C. Additionally, they have something in common: they test your skills or knowledge.
D. Knowing the language that the game is designed in is required for success, however.
E. Figuring out the solution to such a puzzle requires careful thought rather than guessing.
F. Calculation skills are required for players to successfully move and match colored candies.
G. There are thousands of puzzles to choose from that can be worked on at your convenience.

Kindness of Strangers
We depend upon a community where helping others is highly thought of. This helps form a web that holds us
together in times of need.
Years ago, I was in the kitchen getting dinner ready when my fourteen-year-old daughter, Cassandra, called me from her room. “Mom, can you help me get downstairs ” She had lung disease and depended on oxygen twenty-four hours a day, so it was impossible for her to move up and down the stairs without help. I turned down the stove and ran upstairs to her room. Cassandra let out a sigh and closed her eyes. “Mom, I wish it wasn’t so hard
for me to climb the stairs.”
“I know, honey. We’ll try to work something out.”
A month earlier, a company introduced an electric stairlift (座椅电梯) to us. It sounded wonderful. It would greatly improve my daughter’s life. Unluckily, we couldn’t afford it along with the medical bills although John, my
husband, even took two jobs to support the family.
I asked the local organization for help once again. They had lent us a wheelchair and a shower chair; maybe they could help with a stairlift, too. I held my breath while the phone rang. “Do you have a stairlift I could
borrow ” But they hadn’t.
A few weeks later, we bought a shower chair. Then we could return the borrowed one. I loaded it into my car and drove to the organization. As I got close to the gate of its building, I saw something looking like metal rails,
and one of them had a chair attached.
I thought I was seeing things. I parked my car and got out to confirm it was real. I touched the cool metal of
the rails and the soft cushion of the attached seat. There was even a remote control taped to a rail. It was a stairlift! I
ran in to ask about it. A volunteer told me that someone left it here during the night. He added that a note was left
on the stairlift, saying “For anyone who may need it.”
注意:
1.续写词数应为 150 左右;

【答案】 1. B 2. B 3. D
【解析】这是一篇应用文。文章推荐了适合旅游的城市——加拿大的蒙特利尔。
1 推理判断题。根据第一段“Montreal has a unique culture, with its mixture of French and English. If you want to visit one of the best cities in North America, this is the place for you.(蒙特利尔有着独特的文化, 它融合了法语和 英语。如果你想参观北美最好的城市之一,这是你的地方。)”以及文章黑体字“The French”,“Food”和“Music
& Cinema”可知,文章取自于一本旅游手册。故选 B 项。
2 细节理解题。根据第三段的第三、四句“The best way to experience poutine is to go north of Montreal to one of
the ski resorts. Spend all day skiing. Then, when your body aches all over, go to a mountain bar with friends and
have a hot chocolate and a plate of poutine.
根据第二段的第二、三句“It is a city run by the French and for the French. If you want to work there, you have to speak French. (这是一座由法国人管理、为法国人服务的城市。如果你想在那里工作, 你必

【答案】4. B 5. B 6. C 7. D
【解析】本文是一篇说明文。文章介绍了英国著名的 Waterstones 连锁书店。
4 细节理解题。根据第一段中“Five minutes later, people of all ages started to come through the doors. Some dressed up as characters from the books! “This is the third event I’ve been to,” said 28-year-old Alex.(五分钟后, 各个年龄层的人开始陆续进门。有些人打扮成书中的人物! “这是我参加的第三次活动了, ”28 岁的亚历克 斯说)”和““Our first wizards (巫师) have arrived for Harry Potter night,” said staff at the Bradford store.(“我们的第 一批巫师已经来参加哈利波特之夜了,”布拉德福德书店的工作人员说)”可知,周四,人们来到皮卡迪利大
街的 Waterstones 书店参加哈利波特之夜。故选 B。

under the leadership of its very own wizard.(但哈利波特之夜并不是员工和顾客唯一的庆祝活动。
根据第三段中的“But the biggest change was that Daunt gave each store the power to choose what books to sell, and to choose the prices for different books. (但最大的变化是, Daunt 赋予了每家书店选择出售什
么书以及选择不同书籍价格的权力)”可知,给商店更多的自由是 Daunt 做出的最大改变。故选 C。
7 细节理解题。根据最后一段中的“It’s a physical pleasure that customers don’t get when they shop online. If we keep creating shops that do that, it doesn’t matter what goes on online. (这是顾客在网上购物时无法获得的身体 上的愉悦。如果我们继续创建这样的商店, 网上发生的事情就无关紧要了)”可知, Daunt 认为书店有一个美
好的未来,因为他们提供了网上书店不能提供的东西。故选 D。

They, designed to deliver dishes, are also just the right height for customers to easily reach them.
A. Doubtful. B. Positive.
C. Worried. D. Objective.
【答案】8. D 9. C 10. A 11. B

极肯定的态度。故选 B 项。

This is very similar to the way that a British person might
tell you a colleague “is very confident” rather than that they are rude. In this sense, the British and Chinese can
appreciate each other for harmony.
12. What does the author suggest in Paragraph 2
A. Polite comments are encouraged. B. Learning what is not said is difficult.
C. Context is important in communication. D. Misunderstandings often happen among outsiders.
13. What will the British and the Chinese probably both agree with
A. Talking over taboos in discussions. B. Preventing misunderstandings in work.
C. Avoiding discussing one’s mistakes in public. D. Making use of cultural traits in communication.
14. How does the author develop this passage
A. By using figures. B. By making comparison.
C. By listing reasons. D. By making classifications.
15. Which is the most suitable title for the passage
A. Cultural Context B. Conflict Prevention
C. Cultural Differences D. Communication Puzzles
【答案】 12. C 13. C 14. B 15. D

13 推理判断题。根据第四段第一句“Chinese communication shows a very similar conflict prevention. ( 中国的 沟通也表现出非常相似的冲突预防。)”可知,中国人和英国人一致的观点是避免在公共场合讨论自己的错误。
故选 C 项。
14 推理判断题。通读全文, 尤其是第一段第三句“Over time, however, there are some curious similarities between how people in the UK and China communicate. (然而, 随着时间的推移, 英国人和中国人的交流方式有一些奇 怪的相似之处。 )”可知,作者通过比较中国人和英国人交流的方式来论证自己的观点,即作比较。故选 B
项。
15 主旨大意题。通读全文, 尤其是第一段最后一Indeed, international residents in both countries often complain about having to read what local people really mean, because it often differs from what is said.(事实上, 居住在这两 个国家国际居民经常抱怨, 他们必须理解当地人的真正意思, 因为他们说的话往往不同。)”

most common.
Word puzzles
One of the most popular word puzzles — the crossword — has been around for nearly 110 years. Crosswords

Dear fellow students,
Thank you!
【答案】Dear fellow students,
I feel honored to make a speech here! As is known to all, English has become the most common language on the Internet and for international trade. I have been learning English for ten years and I can speak English fluently,
which makes me confident and brings me great pleasure.
I love English and I love great Chinese culture as well. It is lucky that I can combine my hobbies. I founded an English website two years ago, through which I introduce many Chinese cultural relics to foreigners who are interested in Chinese culture. The website is very popular and receives nearly millions of views. I am proud that I
can make a contribution to spreading Chinese culture.
I hope we teenagers should be aware of the importance of learning English, which is a useful tool and can
help us learn more about the world.
第二节(满分 25 分)

I touched the cool metal of the rails and the soft cushion of the attached seat. There was even a remote control taped to a rail. It was a stairlift! I
ran in to ask about it. A volunteer told me that someone left it here during the night. He added that a note was left
on the stairlift, saying “For anyone who may need it.”

After John fixed the stairlift on our stairs, we shouted at Cassandra to try it out!
【答案】 “Can I take it away today ” I asked hopefully. “Of course, I mean if you really need it.” the volunteer replied. “Yes, yes. You know my daughter’s condition doesn’t allow her to move up and down stairs freely, which causes us great trouble. We really need this.” I said eagerly. After filling in an application and going through some other simple procedures, the stairlift was loaded in my car and waiting to go home. I was so excited that almost forgot to ask about who the donator was. The volunteer said, “Strangers.”, smiling.
After John fixed the stairlift on our stairs, we shouted at Cassandra to try it out! With a big smile on her face, Cassandra sat on the chair and switched it on. Slowly but steadily, the stairlift slid down, landing on the first floor safe and sound. Cassandra was more than happy, so did John and I. “Thanks mom and dad.” “It is the strangers who we are supposed to give our gratitude to, my dear.” I knelt down to hold her hands, “I don’t know who send
this gift to us, but I’m sure they are really kind strangers”. “Yes, mon. I will never forget!” .
