Unit 4 Exploring literature
Welcome to the unit
I. Learning objectives
By the end of the lesson, students will be able to:
1. interpret the meaning of two excerpts;
2. share with peers their favourite excerpt and give reasons;
3. share with peers their favourite books and give reasons.
II. Key competence focus
1. Analyse the writing skills used in the text.
2. Encourage the students read more works of literature and draw strength
from the jewel of classical literature.
III. Predicted area of difficulty
Analyse their favourite work of literature .
IV. Teaching procedures
Step 1 Lead-in
1. T shares a poster of the 1st school literature festival with the Ss and
encourage the Ss to take part in this activity.
2. T shares a famous English poetry, and encourage the Ss appreciate the
beauty of literature.
3. T asks Ss to read the excerpts from two famous works of literature and
discuss the following questions. Besides the poetry,T introduces more
literary types to the Ss to guide the Ss into the sea of literature.
Step 2 Pre-reading
Start four guessing games to learn more from masters and their works.
Step 3 While-reading
1. T asks Ss to read the excerpts from two famous works of literature and
discuss the following questions.
a. What message is conveyed in the two excerpts
The excerpt from David Copperfield shows the main character's passion for whatever he is doing. The other excerpt from The House on Mango Street introduces the concept of making full use of what we have
now.
b. Which of the excerpts makes you feel like reading the whole book
Why
The second excerpt makes me feel like reading the whole book because I think the language the author uses is simple but beautiful. I particularly
like her description of the sky keeping us safe when we are sad.
2. Guide the Ss to describe the style of these two excerpts make a
comparison
Step 4 Further-reading and task
T asks Ss to talk about what their favourite work of literature is and why
they like it. They can follow the structure:
