Unit4 Exploring literature
Extended reading ----The Old Man and the Sea
Analysis of the teaching material The theme of Unit 4 is centered on literature. This part, Extended Reading serves as an extension to the whole unit, which is aimed at not only appreciating the famous work of classic literature but also guiding students to have a better understanding of the three qualities of literature. After learning the class, students are expected to set up right values and have a distillation of emotion. That is, this class will start with the introduction of Hemingway, who believes “A man can be destroyed but not defeated”, then proceed to show the plot of this expert —the struggle between the old man and the fish .Meanwhile, students will learn the unique writing style of Hemingway. Finally, students will be guided to learn to persevere in the face of difficulties
Analysis of the Students Most of my students are from the countryside, so their English is limited. When teaching them, I have to take the improving of their skills into consideration. As for the topic of literature, they are interested but lack vocabularies and expressions, Meanwhile, for senior one students, they have difficulty in reading and understanding the literature.
Teaching aims: 1. Language competence ①To learn the writing style of Hemingway. ② To describe the personality traits of the old man based on deep understanding. ③To understand the whole excerpt by reading out emotionally. ④ To enhance students’ reading ability step by step through various activities like discussions and consolidation exercises, which ultimately contributes to the assessment from lexical quantity to lexical quality. 2. Learning competence ① To apply the knowledge learned and discussed to the final assignment. ② To understand that the strong spirit of the old man, thus learning to appreciate others. 3. Thinking quality To help students develop critical thinking and make proper analysis about the language characteristics and the personal traits of the old man.
4. Cultural character ① To help students set up right values and have a clear understanding that even if one person loses a physical battle, he or she can still win a mental battle. ② To shape students’ personality by carrying out moral education and self-reflection through a video appreciation.
Teaching key points: ①Have a deep understanding of the theme of this excerpt ②To understand Hemingway’s writing style.
Teaching difficult points: ① Get students to critically think and make proper analysis about the language characteristics and the personal traits of the old man. ② Analyze Hemingway's other works and summarize Hemingway's writing style.

Teaching procedures
Step1 lead-in 1.Greetings 2.Let’s watch Students will be invited to enjoy a short video about the excerpt to have a basic understanding of this text. Then, they read the whole excerpt quickly and get a general idea. 【 Design Purpose】 Cultivate students' language ability through free question and answer between teachers and students. The video is helpful for students to have a basic understanding of the story.
Step2 presentation 1.Fast reading -Skimming In this excerpt the old man was struggling to catch a fish. Then, several students will be asked to answer the three questions. 【 Design Purpose】To make students have a general idea about the text.
Step3 Appreciation 2Intensive reading ⑴①Students will try to find five rounds between the old man and the fish. Meanwhile, students try to find the detailed information of the battle as much as possible. ② Students will be led to draw a conclusion about the changes in the old man’s physical and mental condition. The old man is a tough person who can be physically destroyed but not mentally
defeated. His courage and pride pushes him forward throughout the fight against the fish. ③students will discuss symbolic meanings of the fish . ⑵ Guide students to appreciate the unique writing style of Hemingway. 【Design Purpose】To make students have a deep understanding of the article in detailed analysis. Through the comparison between spirit and body, sublimating the theme of the article again - people can be destroyed, but not defeated.
Step4 Moral education Lead students to think about the real meaning of the famous saying “A man can be destroyed but not defeated”. Finally, teacher shows two videos about the tough man in our life. One is the video of medical workers fighting hard in the COVID-19 epidemic, and the other is the video of Olympic athletes fighting hard in the Olympic Games. Students can get a better understanding of “tough man” . 【Design Purpose】students can get further emotional sublimation.
Step 5 Homework If you are a young fisherman, would you like to learn fishing skills from the old man in the text Why 【 Design Purpose】 students will develop their critical thinking ability through homework

Teaching reflection Based on the New Curriculum Standard and the core literacy of the English subject,this period of class has designed different levels of activities.Meanwhile,students can finish the tasks effectively through group work and they are willing to participate in all of the activities .The atmosphere is active and inspiring.when it comes to the text,students have a deep understanding of the personality traits of the old man, and the writing style of Hemingway. At the end of the class, students are inspired to learn from the heroes in our society to get further emotional sublimation. I think teaching aims have been basically achieved. However, there are still some language points in this excerpt that can’t be explained due to the limited time. Next time, I will prepare for that.
