Every holiday season,Patricia Gallagher fills her car with stuffed animals and drives around Philadelphia. She gives them not to kids but to seniors.
Patricia’s holiday tradition started in 2009.“I just got this idea to call two nursing homes at random and ask if I could come and read It Was the Night Before Christmas,” she said. She brought some of her kids’ stuffed animals for the seniors to hold while she read.“But when I went to gather them and take them back to go to the next nursing home, nobody wanted to give up their stuffed animals,” she added. It was then and there that she realized the power of a simple holiday gift.

Patricia wanted to continue her tradition of giving,so she put an ad online, asking for gently used stuffed animals. In her first two years of collecting, she received more than 11,000 donated stuffed animals. She said sometimes local schools would hold stuffed animal collections on her behalf,or a child who outgrew their toys would donate. After receiving too many,Patricia started capping how many she would collect at a time, and said she could only take in about 250 stuffed animals each week during the holiday season. Then, she took them to nursing homes.

“The elderly want stuffed animals not only for comfort, but they were conversation starters. It reminded them of their childhood,” she said. And she recalled one man said,“You know,I never wanted to go to school. And my father said if I would go that day,he would take me to the Brooklyn Zoo.And you know what This was the first animal I saw there and it looked just like this giraffe.”
Spreading joy isn’t just a holiday pastime for Patricia. She is also known as the “Happy Flower Lady” around Philadelphia, because she collects old flowers from stores and passes them out to anyone who needs a pick-me-up.

“When you give, you really do get more back,” Patricia said.“Every morning, whether it’s the flowers or the stuffed animals,I have a purpose.”

Unit 2 Improving yourself
Ⅰ.阅读理解

You may have wondered how lavender is used for social anxiety. But first, just what is lavender Lavender, also known as English or garden lavender,is a herb native to the Mediterranean region.Historically, lavender was used to mummify bodies in Egypt,in baths in Greece and Rome, and for curing the broken skin and mental health purposes.Today, lavender is used as a traditional or complementary remedy for relaxation,to reduce anxiety, and depression,as well as for diseases such as stomach upset and headaches.

No scientific studies have specifically examined the benefits of lavender use for social anxiety disorder. In a 2000 study,Cook and Ernst reported that in general, aromatherapy(芳香疗法) is helpful in reducing anxiety and stress in the short-term.A 2012 study also showed some evidence of the usefulness of lavender taken for anxiety.More research is needed to support the use of lavender for the treatment of social anxiety disorder.

Lavender is usually used in the form of an essential oil as part of aromatherapy. The scent is inhaled,or the oil is applied to the skin, which will benefit the anxious people quickly.Dried lavender can also be used to make a tea or liquid extract.Lavender may also be taken in pill form.Lavender tea can be made by using 1 to 2 teaspoons of dried leaves for 15 minutes in a cup of boiling water. In liquid extract form,no more than 60 drops of lavender should be taken in a day. Before taking lavender in liquid form, you should read the product label and discuss the dose with a qualified health care provider.

There is not enough scientific evidence to safely recommend lavender for children younger than 18 years.Lavender taken by mouth has the potential to increase the risk of bleeding. If you suffer from a bleeding disorder or are taking medicine that may increase bleeding, use caution when taking lavender.

Deveza’s mother was on the waiting list for a kidney transplant(肾移植). Deveza wanted to donate one of her own kidneys—but she was turned down because she might develop the same health problems as her mother in later life.
Deveza came up with a different plan.In 2017,she started the world’s first paired exchange of different organs between living donors, exchanging half her liver(肝) for someone else’s kidney.A case study of the organ exchange has now been published, and the surgeons who were involved are calling for more exchanges like this.“You can imagine the enormous impact for mixed organ extended chains,” says John Roberts,a surgeon at University of California,San Francisco.

Most organ transplants come from people who have died, but there are never enough organs. As most people can manage with just one of their kidneys, people with kidney failure are increasingly receiving donated organs from relatives or friends. If someone wants to donate but their immune system is unsuited, doctors may be able to find pairs of would-be donors who can each give a kidney to the other’s relative.
When Deveza was looking into such chains, she came across research describing the idea of trading a kidney with the only other organ generally taken from a living donor—the liver. She suggested the idea to many hospitals before she finally contacted Roberts, who saw the idea’s potential.

Deveza was assessed to be in good enough health to donate part of her liver. It then took 18 months to find Annie Simmons,in Idaho, whose liver was unsuitable to use as a transplant for her sister with severe liver disease. They drew up a plan:Simmons would donate a kidney to Deveza’s mother, and in return,Deveza would give half her liver to Simmons’ sister. The hospital gave the go-ahead and the four operations took place on the same day successfully.
The team hopes that the ground-breaking case will inspire more people to consider doing the same.Roberts says that direct exchanges involving two donors could enable up to thirty extra living-donor liver transplants a year—a ten percent increase.

Growing up,Espino may have been better at sports than he was at graffiti(涂鸦),but his memories of hanging out with graffiti-writer friends and looking through graffiti books have stayed with him. After college,he went into the world of real estate, but continued to collect art.
A few years later,Espino began selling prints and creative objects at local events. In May 2022,he opened a Culture Gallery.“I wanted to see what it’s like to run a gallery and I wanted to help artists learn and make money from their artworks,” he explains.

The space caught the attention of Lou Jiménez, who is now the gallery’s director.Jiménez shares Espino’s vision to support local artists.“He comes from a different background and is leading by example,” she says of his real estate background.“He’s taking a huge risk because it requires a lot of investment and there is no art market here,so I appreciate the fact that we’re trying to expand that.”
Espino admits he initially underestimated how challenging sales can be.Even with this realization, his sights are set on success, and he’s already put himself in a “bigger mindset” to steadily accomplish that.

Espino hopes taking artists to other cities will provide the encouragement they might need to pursue a career in the arts. From his businessman’s perspective,Espino feels people need to be taught on the value of supporting local talent.“A lot of people in the community need to be explained to how much difference it makes to the community to invest in local art and as sad as that is,they just don’t see it or hear it,” he says.
Not one to back down from a challenge,Espino and his team have the passion and determination to construct a platform that will help local artists and,if all goes according to his plan, they hope to have a significant impact on the local arts community and culture for many years to come.

The world’s first robotic self-portraits(自画像),painted by an robot called Ai-Da,have been displayed at a new art exhibit in London. The surprisingly accurate images question the role of artificial intelligence(AI) in human society and challenge the idea that art is totally a human trait(特征),according to her creators.
Ai-Da is a life-size android artist powered by AI that can paint, sculpt, and talk.Ai-Da is designed to look and act like a human woman with a female voice. She is named after Ada Lovelace, the pioneering English mathematician who is considered one of the first computer programmers.

In the past,Ai-Da’s work was made up of abstract paintings based on complex mathematical models, and her first exhibition raised over $1 million in art sales. Now Ai-Da has created what are believed to be the first self-portraits made by a machine.
Three of these robot selfies went on display at the Design Museum on May 18 in an exhibition titled “Ai-Da:Portrait of the Robot,” which is free to the public and will remain on display until Aug.29.
“These images are meant to unsettle,” said Aidan Meller, the gallery owner behind the creation of Ai-Da.“They are meant to raise questions about where we are going. What is our role as humans if so much can be copied through technology ”

Ai-Da’s new self-portraits are a combination of constantly updated AI,inbuilt programming and advanced robotics. Her eyes are actually cameras that allow her to “look” at what she is painting or sculpting,in this case, herself, and copy it.Ai-Da did not decide to create the self-portraits;rather,her creators gave her those instructions.Ai-Da’s creators hope that her existence will make us think more about the role of technology,in particular,AI,in our everyday lives.

When Roosevelt was a kid,his doctors claimed that he was too weak to live a normal life like most children of his age. They strongly recommended him to avoid participation in any physical activities, fearing that it could worsen his health condition and potentially lead to his death.Their opinions implied that he would face up to a life full of all kinds of limitations.Instead of permitting their limiting beliefs about what he could do and achieve,he chose to live a meaningful life.

A multi-institutional team of researchers conducted the first study to evaluate how the duration of nightly sleep early in the semester affects first year college students’ end-of-semester grade point average(GPA).Using Fitbit sleep trackers, they found that students on average sleep 6.5 hours a night, but negative outcomes accumulate when students received less than six hours of sleep a night. The results are available in the Feb.13 issue of the Proceedings of the National Academy of Sciences.
Sleep guidelines recommend teenagers get 8 to 10 hours of sleep every night. Many college students experience irregular and insufficient sleep.

David Creswell, the William S.Dietrich Ⅱ Professor in Psychology and Neuroscience at the Dietrich College of Humanities and Social Sciences, led a team of researchers to evaluate the relationship between sleep and GPA. “Animal studies have shown how critical sleep is for learning and memory,” said Creswell.“Here we show how this work translates to humans. The less nightly sleep a first year college student gets at the beginning of the school term predicts lower GPA at the end of the term.Lack of sleep may be hurting students’ ability to learn in their college classrooms.”

The study evaluated more than 600 first-year students across five studies at three universities. The students wore wrist Fitbit devices to monitor and record their sleep patterns. The researchers found that students in the study sleep on average 6.5 hours a night.More surprisingly, the researchers found that students who receive less than six hours of sleep experienced a pronounced decline in academic performance. In addition, each hour of sleep lost corresponded to a 0.07 decrease in end-of-term GPA.
“Once you start dipping(下降)below six hours, you are starting to accumulate massive sleep debt that can impair a student’s health and study habits, compromising the whole system,” said Creswell.“Most surprising to me was that no matter what we did to make the effect go away,it persisted.”

8.What surprised Creswell most
A.Sleep can influence college students’ learning.

The day when the jobs were handed out was one of the most exciting for all the children in the class. It took place during the first week of the term.On that day, every boy and girl was given a job for which they would be responsible for the rest of that school year.

As everything else, some jobs were more interesting, and the children were eager to be given one of the interesting ones. When giving them out,the teacher took into account which children had been most responsible during the previous year, and those children were usually the ones who most looked forward to this day.Among them Rita stood out.She was a kind and quiet girl;and during the previous year she had carried out the teacher’s instructions perfectly. All the children knew Rita was the favourite to be given the best job of all—to look after the class dog.

But this year there was a big surprise. Each child received one of the normal jobs, like preparing the books or the radio for the lessons, telling the time, cleaning the blackboard, and looking after one of the pets. But Rita’s job was very different. She was given a little box containing some sand and some ants. And even though the teacher insisted that they were very special ants,Rita couldn’t help feeling disappointed.Anyway, she accepted the task. Most of her classmates felt sorry for her. They sympathised with her and remarked on how unfair it was that she had been given that job.Even Rita’s father felt sorry for her,and as an act of protest,he told Rita to pay no attention to this insignificant pet. However,Rita, who liked her teacher very much, preferred to show the teacher her ability by doing something special with such an insignificant task.“I will turn this ‘little task’ into something great,” Rita said to herself.

She observed their behavior, their interactions, and their construction of tunnels and mounds. She even started a small ant farm at home, carefully monitoring the growth and development of the colony.Rita realized that her seemingly insignificant task was actually a great opportunity to learn and explore the wonders of nature.

Several months later, one day,Dr.Martinez came to Rita’s class to choose a young assistant. He was looking for a bright and curious student who had shown a genuine interest in the world of insects. To everyone’s surprise,he chose Rita. She was overjoyed and felt that her hard work and dedication had paid off.As Dr.Martinez’s assistant,Rita had the opportunity to work alongside him, learning about different types of insects, their habitats, and their roles in the ecosystem. She traveled with him to different places to collect samples, and even got to participate in a research project on ant behavior.(共31张PPT)

One man’s trash is another man’s treasure is absolutely the case in Türkiye where garbage collectors started collecting books that have been thrown away and ended up opening a library.
It started when garbage man Durson Ipek found a bag of abandoned books when he was working and then it snowballed from there.Ipek and other garbage men started gathering the books they found on the streets that were ready for landfills(垃圾填埋地) and as their collection started to grow,so did word of mouth.Soon, local residents started donating books directly. The library was initially available only to the garbage employees and their families to use

but as the collection grew,so did public interest and the library was opened to the public in 2017.
“On the one hand, there were those who were leaving these books on the streets. On the other hand, others were looking for these books,” Ankaya mayor Alper Tasdelen told CNN.“We started to discuss the idea of creating a library from these books. When everyone supported it,this project happened.”

All the books that are found are sorted and checked for condition. If they pass, they go on the shelves.Today, the library has over 6,000 books that range from fiction to nonfiction and there’s a very popular children’s section that even has a collection of comic books. An entire section is devoted to scientific research and there are also books available in English and French. The collection has grown so large that the library loans books to schools and educational programs.
“Village school teachers from all over Türkiye are requesting books,” Tasdelen told CNN.The government has to hire a full-time employee to manage the library.

This library is incredibly popular. It is frequently filled with the children of the city’s workers and students from nearby schools. There is a waiting room set up for readers and chess boards for the people who visit the library. You can even enjoy a cup of tea in the waiting room.

If you visited a big aquarium such as Sea World or the Miami Seaquarium a decade ago, performances by tiger whales were probably a centerpiece of the visiting experience. However, animal advocates have pushed to end the harmful practice of keeping these enormous whales locked up in small pools and forcing them to perform for audiences. Now the good news is emerging from this continuing movement Lolita, one tiger whale living in the Miami Seaquarium, may soon be released to the Salish Sea where her mother lives.

Lolita’s possible homecoming is a longtime coming. The enormous animal was caught in 1970 in the Salish Sea,a body of water off the coast of Washington, which is home to tiger whales.Until now she has spent the past 52 years in captivity in Miami. Her tank is considered the smallest among those of captive whales in America. She has been forced to perform for crowds for decades. This has resulted in injuries. She has hit her head while performing “fast swims”,and her blood work has been abnormal.
Whales in captivity can suffer severe health issues.Lolita outlived her tank-mate Hugo, who died of aneurism(动脉瘤) caused by hitting his head on the aquarium walls.“Lolita’s lucky,” said Howard Garrett,a whale researcher and

activist.“It’s against all odds that she is still alive.I think it is her mental health that keeps her physical health in good shape. She is a complete miracle in her ability to stay healthy.”
According to the United States,Department of Agriculture,Lolita may not be getting enough food and water. This only adds to the list of health concerns which can appear in captivity.Activists who have been pushing for decades may at last see Lolita return to the Salish Sea,where her mother,a 93-year-old tiger whale known as “Ocean Sun”,leads a pod.Returning these magnificent creatures to their natural habitat is a humane solution advocated for by the likes of the International Marine Mammal Project.

Budha Magar,a double above-the-knee amputee(被截肢者),is working with an all-Nepali team to attempt to conquer the world’s highest mountain in May.Though he will be kitted out(装备) with special climbing legs,he will essentially be crawling up Qomolangma using his hands.
He estimates it will take him three times longer than able-bodied climbers to reach the summit(顶峰),though he is confident he will be faster than average on the ladder sections because of his superior upper body strength. Two climbers with below-knee amputations have reached Qomolangma’s summit

before. But making the climb without knees is significantly harder.“In Nepali we say that being disabled is ‘like a burden of the earth’,” he explains.Magar hopes that he can raise awareness of just what is possible for a disabled person in the country of his birth, and hopefully inspire others further afield.
He was born in a village of Nepal, and he left there at the age of 19.In April 2021,he had an accident.Suddenly legless,he spent at least 18 months depressed before a charity offered him the chance to go skydiving.“That was a big turning point for me,especially for my confidence. And when we landed on the ground I realized that even without legs we are able to do lots of things,” he says.

He began doing sports—golf, rock climbing, table tennis—before setting his sights on mountaineering. Before long,a childhood dream to climb Qomolangma resurfaced, and he began training in Qomolangma to make the climb in 2018.
Now living in Canterbury,Budha Magar has raised more than £200,000 towards his attempt. If he can find another £100,000 of sponsorship,he will travel to Nepal in spring with his expedition leader Krishna Thapa.Success on the world’s highest mountain can never be guaranteed, but his expedition credo(信条) illustrates his mindset:no legs,no limits.

Have you ever lost something in a hard-to-reach space, like behind a couch or a cupboard Wouldn’t it be nice to just be able to squeeze in and out New innovations in the field of robotics will soon be able to make this nice idea into a reality.
In a study published on Jan.25 in the science journal Matter, engineers from the Chinese University of Hong Kong and Carnegie Mellon University in the US have developed small robots that can quickly change back and forth from liquid to solid states.

According to the website Mashable, the scientists were inspired by sea cucumbers. They are able to change the stiffness (僵硬度) of their body or reduce the potential for physical damage. The robots in the study were made from gallium(镓),a soft metal with a low melting point of 30℃.The scientists then used changes in the magnetic field to control the magnetic particles inside the gallium material to provide heat. This heat then allowed the robots to change between solid and liquid states as well as to move around.

As the website Tech Xplore pointed out, other similar materials require external heat sources such as heat guns and electrical currents to induce a change of states;but now,the robots can use a heat source inside itself to change states independently.During the robots’ experimental trials, the scientists conducted a number of tests. These tests included having the robots melt into liquid and re-form to escape a prison-like cage.It can remove a foreign object from and deliver medicinal drugs to a model stomach. The robot is also able to build and repair hard-to-reach circuits. The robots’ ability to switch between states of matter allows for a number of possible uses and advancements in different fields, such as the biomedical and circuit assembly(组装) industries.

Still,in the words of senior author Carmel Majidi at Carnegie Mellon University, for now these are all just “proofs of concept” which show the abilities of these new kind of robots.

I started to gain recognition from others.I became known as a girl who was good at basketball, not just as the girl who didn’t have hair.I was still bullied, but it began to bother me less because I had another distraction.I put all my time and energy into basketball and becoming the best player I could be.

In my senior year of college,I wanted to run the marathon in my town to check this athletic endeavor off my wish list.I barely trained and thought it was just running.I was wrong in countless ways.
I had no idea at the time that this 26.2-mile run would change my life and attitude in more ways than I could have imagined.During that run, something clicked inside me.I felt strong, fierce, and truly like Superwoman.I had never felt this way before, not even during the other sporting games I had played in.I will never forget the feeling of crossing the finish line, all the emotions I felt, and the way everyone celebrated me.I fell in love with the sport and knew I wanted to become a runner.

I began running marathons all over the country. The more I ran,the stronger and more confident I felt.I slowly started to talk about my hair to close friends and even went out walking without my wig.

参考答案
Then one day,on a hot twenty-mile training run,I took off my wig mid-run. Seeing me running without my wig,the people around me was a little shocked. Some even whispered and wondered why I did it.They thought I would not dare to take off my wig and hid my bald head in my whole life. But when they realized that I had had enough confidence to face my true self, they all felt relieved and happy for me.They showed their support to me and thought highly of my braveness.

Two weeks later,I ran my first marathon, bald. All my friends and classmates went to cheer me up.Though there was a little difference between me and other competitors, who were also confused why I was bold,I didn’t think that we had any difference.I just spared no effort to run and adjust my breath. With confidence,I crossed the finish line first. All the audience cheered loudly for me.My parents were proud of me as well.
