Today was my first day at senior high and it was hard. In high school, you have 4 minutes to get to your next class. My high school is very big and those 4 minutes to go from one class to another really isn’t a lot of time. Today I had to go from one end of the building to the other to get from science class to math class. I wanted to go to my locker first and leave my science book there, but that took time. I was worried about being late, and I was. The math teacher said, “Just be on time tomorrow, or you’ll have detention (放学后留校).”
After math, I went to art class. I like my art class a lot because I get to create things. The teacher there showed us how to make portraits (肖像). He explained, “A portrait is a way of communicating with a person. It does not just show how the person looks but what is important to understand the person.” We just did drawings today, but I know it’s going to be great. I like drawing.
I like my English class, too. I think the teacher is really supportive. Today we wrote about ourselves. The teacher said to just write what you think, and we’ll pay attention to punctuation (标点) later. We could write a paragraph or a poem, and I wrote a poem about myself. I thought it was a good poem, and the teacher said I had used good images (意象) to communicate my feelings.
Lunch was very hurried. I arrived at the dining room with 12 minutes to eat. I sat with people I didn’t know, and everyone was eating quickly. After lunch I signed up for a computer club. I need to learn how to use a computer well because my social studies teacher says it is the one skill you need in every class.

The introduction of the iPad, with its touch screen technology, has allowed even very young children to take advantage of a computer. So what if all children in a school were given an iPad to use in class and take home with them
Anne Laure Bazin works in a school where every child, teacher and teaching assistant is given a free iPad to use in and out of lessons. For her, the main advantage of everyone having an iPad has been the improvement in communication. Documents (文件) can be emailed straight over to co-workers during a meeting. Children can submit their homework by email, or through other terminals used on their iPads instead of giving it straight to the teachers. Teachers now take the register using their iPad, which means that there is a centralized record of which children are in school, and which classroom they are in.
The use of iPads has encouraged greater sharing of resources among teachers. All communication with parents is now done by email. Working as a group in class is much easier as children can share documents. The whole class can look at one child’s work by attaching the iPad to the whiteboard. If a child has forgotten the textbook, the teacher can take a photograph of the relevant (相关的) page and send it to the student in class.
While the use of the iPad in schools has revolutionized (变革) the way children are taught, it hasn’t completely replaced more traditional methods of teaching. Worksheets are still used in class as some children prefer the contact with paper. The children all have a textbook and exercise books. In Anne Laure’s school, parents feared that the iPads would replace exercise books and children would lose handwriting skills. Anne Laure says, “The teachers are not ready to let go of the traditional style of teaching. We have welcomed the iPads in so much as they help communication and widen the resources available (可得到的) but we are not ready to let go of paper yet. The children themselves still value their exercise books and depend on them for revision. ”
28.What does the underlined word “submit” in the second paragraph mean
A.Clean up. B. Concentrate on C. Write down. D. Hand in.
29.What is an advantage of using iPads in the classroom
A.It saves students bringing the textbooks.
B.It reduces parents’ worry about teaching.
C.It improves the relationship between teachers.
D.It makes sharing information convenient.
30.What is parents’ attitude towards the use of iPads in the classroom in Annie’s school
A.Worried. B.Uncaring. C.Annoyed. D.Supportive.
31.What is the main idea of the last paragraph
A.Teachers prefer traditional methods of teaching.
B.The iPads won’t take the place of printed materials.
C.More and more schools are using iPads.
D.Exercise books are more valuable now.
D
Teenagers who spend more time on after-school activities and less than two hours of screen time after school are more mentally (心理上) healthy, according to a study published in the journal Preventive Medicine. The new study was carried out by researchers from the University of British Columbia.
The study used information collected from more than 28, 000 seventh-grade Canadian students between 2014 and 2018. The students first answered questions about their usage of screen time after school, including how much time they used to watch TV, Netflix or something else. Then, students reported how many days they had taken part in after-school activities such as sports or arts programmes. After that, researchers asked students to describe their state(状态) of mind. For example, when given a statement such as “I start most days thinking that I will have a good day”, they could choose to what level they agreed with it on a scale (等级).
Some of the results were expected, researchers said in the study. Students with no after-school activities usually had high levels of screen time, for example. And they expected girls would score higher on negative indicators (消极指标) of mental health, as earlier research had found that they tended to have higher levels of anxiety (焦虑) compared to boys.
What was noteworthy, researchers say, is that even among students who took part in after-school activities, 46% still went beyond the recommended screen time of two hours. At the same time, 67% of students who didn’t take part in after-school activities also had more than two hours of screen time. Together, this suggests high screen time among teenagers generally.
“The findings suggest that after-school activities are valuable for the happy growing of teenagers,” the study said. “While past studies have proved the importance of after-school activities for social and academic (学业的) development, the present study shows their importance for good mental health results.”
32.Which of the following came last when students took part in the new study
A.Talking about their life styles.
B.Introducing their after-school activities.
C.Reporting their mental states on a scale.
D.Answering questions about screen time use.
33.What do the researchers find about teenage girls
A.They often have higher levels of satisfaction.
B.Few of them take part in after-school activities.
C.Anxiety has become a serious problem among them.
D.Too much screen time may be more harmful to them.
34.What does the author want to show by using the numbers in paragraph 4
A.Earlier findings about screen time are wrong.
B.High screen time is common among teenagers.
C.No after-school activities mean no screen time.
D.Screens attract teenagers more than after-school activities do.
35.Why are after-school activities so important according to the new study
A.They are good for teenagers’ physical health.
B.They help to improve teenagers’ mental health.
C.They encourage teenagers’ social development.
D.They allow teenagers to become better learners.
