2024年江苏省中考英语专练:阅读理解
Different lakes have different colors. A study in 2020 shows that around one third of the world’s lakes are blue. But global (全球的) warming may turn them to green or even brown.
Xiao Yang from SMU in the US and his team looked at the color of over 85,000 lakes based on their satellite photos from 2013 to 2020. They found that lakes in places with cooler average (平均) summer temperatures were more likely to be blue than lakes in places with warmer summers.
The study said that water molecules (分子) absorb (吸收) the long wavelengths from the sunlight, such as red, orange and yellow. They leave behind the short ones. This makes a lake look green and blue. So the cleaner the water, the bluer it looks.
In warmer lakes, algae (水藻) and phytoplankton (浮游植物) grow easily. Their colors are green and even brown. They give the lake a different color. If the temperature goes on to rise because of climate change, the study said that one in ten blue lakes might change colour.
Humans get their drinking water from lakes, streams and ground water. As lakes become greener, people may lose lots of clean water. Because of this, treating the water of such lakes becomes more expensive.
At the same time, blue lakes are also a source of a place to play. Catherine O’Reilly, a co-author of the study, says some people considered blue lakes as a refuge (避难所) or spiritual (精神上的) place. As these blue lakes disappear, they may feel sad.
For lake animals, the development of algae and phytoplankton in greener lakes can provide more food. But more algae and phytoplankton mean less oxygen (氧气) for the lake animals, and this may kill them.

The pirates, the Lost Boys, the Indians and the beasts are all walking round and round the island in a circle (圆). They never catch each other because they are all walking at the same speed. At the end of the procession, there is an enormous crocodile (鳄鱼). The boys are the first to leave the circle. They disappear very quickly into their home under the ground. The entrances to their home are in seven large trees. There’s one for each Lost Boy—Nibs, Slightly, Tootles, Curly, the Twins—and one for Peter Pan. Each boy enters through a hole in the trunk (枝干) of his tree. Hook does not know where their home is, but he wants to find it.
Later Nibs goes out for a walk. While he is walking through the woods, the pirates see him. Starkey, the ship’s mate, takes out his pistol (手枪) but Hook stops him and says, “No. I don’t want to shoot one Lost Boy. I want to kill all of them. Go and look for them! I want to find their house!”
The pirates disappear into the woods. Now Captain Hook and Mr. Smee, the ship’s bosun, are alone. Hook begins to talk about the Lost Boys.
“I want Peter Pan, Smee,” he says. “Peter Pan and the crocodile made me lose my left hand.”
“Oh, yes. I know that you are afraid of crocodiles,” says Smee.
“I am not afraid of all crocodiles,” explains Hook quickly. “Just one crocodile. It has my hand and now it wants to eat the rest of me.” Then he sits down on a large mushroom.
“Smee,” he says. “That crocodile wants to kill me, but luckily it has a clock inside it. The clock makes a noise: tick-tock, tick-tock. When I hear the tick-tock of the clock, I have time to run away before the crocodile can catch me.”

Ye Guangfu was working hard to walk, but his body floated(漂浮)! Then he tried to turn around, but he couldn’t. “In space, astronauts are in a weightless environment. Taking a spacewalk is difficult. So we need to use nearby devices(装置)to move,”he said.
In the “Tiangong Classroom”, Wang Yaping made a beautiful water film(水膜). Then she took out a paper flower and placed it on the film of water. The pink flower slowly “bloomed(开花)”!“I hope your dreams can bloom in the huge universe!” she said.
The density(密度)of a ping pong is less than that of the water, so it floats up on the earth. But in space, the ball does not float up. It stops in the center of the water! “The buoyancy(浮力)disappears in a weightless environment so the ball cannot float,” Ms.Wang explained.

Fan Shenghua, is one of the inheritors (继承人) of West Lake Longjing tea roasting technique (炒茶技艺). He has been making Longjing tea for more than forty years.
Longjing tea leaves are famous for their color, taste and shape.

These days, however, more people are using machines to do the job. “It’s easier, but the quality is not as good,” Fan said. “Machine-made tea floats longer in water and tastes bitter.”
In March this year, when President Xi Jinping visited Hangzhou, he watched Fan roast tea. Fan changed the strength and movement of his hands as he roasted leaves. Xi later said, “The things made by two palms (手掌) cannot be replaced by modern technology.”
Fan is now teaching some young men. His son, a 27-year-old college graduate, is one of them. “It’s a tradition. We need to pass it down,” he said.
