It’s a classic story: A kid is forced to learn an instrument from a young age, they play it throughout their childhood, and they develop a bittersweet relationship with it. Is the constant battle between the love for the music and the hate for the constant challenge worth the fight For me, it was.
I started playing the piano when I was four-that was 15 years ago! This was huge commitment, so there must have been something worth holding on to, right
The easy guess is that I was purely in love with music and piano. Although that’s the sweeter tale, it’s a bit more complicated. I struggled a lot with piano. Family and peers were, at least in my own head, constantly placed beside me in competition. I felt pressure to be the best in order to prove something to others-and more devastatingly (破坏性地) to prove something to myself. The seed of my musical interest was grown in the sunlight of competition and doubt. Hate sprouted (滋生) when my self-criticism hit too hard.
It’s difficult to learn to love something that didn’t originate from love. For a while, piano was more of an annoyance than a hobby. But somehow, love grew. It was deeply buried. But it was there, and by high school,it was strong enough that when I was truly on the verge of quitting any kind of formal training. I found the strength to hold on tighter, and dig further. I switched teachers, and got incredibly lucky with one who helped me tunnel into what I loved. I learned pieces for myself, I composed for myself, and I found confidence not because I got “good enough,” but because I learned that anything I had was good enough.
The love and hate I’ve had for the piano were both planted and grown. If you too have learned to hate something, remember that with commitment, it can be uprooted, and love can make a home in its place. There is always time. There is always room.
4. What does the author want to show by telling a classic story
A. The benefits of music.
B. Kids’ struggle in learning instruments.
C. Kids’ bittersweet childhood.
D. The popularity of learning instruments.
5. What can we know about the author’s experience of playing the piano
A. She finally quit formal training.
B. She never treated it as her hobby.
C. She was in pure love with music and piano.
D. She once experienced great pressure from herself.
6. What helped the author find confidence
A. Her attitude. B. Her training.
C. Her compromise. D. Her achievement.
7. What message is mainly delivered in the passage
A. Practice makes perfect.
B. Love is a thing that grows.
C. Content is better than riches.
D. Chance favors the prepared mind.
B 5. D 6. A 7. B
由文章第一段“It’s a classic story: A kid is forced to learn an instrument from a young age, they play it throughout their childhood, and they develop a bittersweet relationship with it. Is the constant battle between the love for the music and the hate for the constant challenge worth the fight For me, it was.(这是一个经典的故事:一个孩子从小就被迫学习一种乐器,他们在整个童年时期都在演奏,并与之发展出苦乐参半的关系。对音乐的热爱和对不断挑战的憎恨之间不断的斗争值得吗?对我来说,是的。)”可知,文章讲故事是为了说明孩子们在学乐器方面的挣扎,然后引出介绍自己的情况。故选B项。
【5题详解】
细节理解题。由文章第三段“ I felt pressure to be the best in order to prove something to others-and more devastatingly (破坏性地) to prove something to myself. The seed of my musical interest was grown in the sunlight of competition and doubt.(为了向别人证明一些东西,我感受到了成为最好的人的压力——更具毁灭性的是,为了向自己证明一些东西。我对音乐的兴趣在竞争和怀疑的阳光下生长。)”可知,作者曾经经历了来自自己的巨大压力。故选D项。
【6题详解】
细节理解题。由文章倒数第二段“I learned pieces for myself, I composed for myself, and I found confidence not because I got “good enough,” but because I learned that anything I had was good enough.(我为自己学习曲子,为自己作曲,我找到了自信,不是因为我“足够好”,而是因为我知道我所拥有的一切都足够好。)” 故选A项。
由文章倒数第二段“It’s difficult to learn to love something that didn’t originate from love. (很难学会去爱一些不是源于爱的东西。)”以及文章最后一段“The love and hate I’ve had for the piano were both planted and grown. If you too have learned to hate something, remember that with commitment, it can be uprooted, and love can make a home in its place. There is always time. There is always room.(我对钢琴的爱和恨都是种下的,也是成长的。如果你也学会了憎恨某件事,请记住,有了承诺,它可以被连根拔起,爱可以在它的地方建立一个家。时间总是有的。空间也总是有的。)”以及上下文可知,文章通过自己练钢琴的经历领悟到:对东西的爱是可以逐渐培养形成的,所以B项Love is a thing that grows(爱是一种成长的东西)符合文意。故选B项。
C
Some people say they “never forget a face.” But what does that saying mean Is there really no limit to the number of faces a person can remember A new study from a group of researchers at the University of York in England has found that, on average, people can remember as many as 5,000 faces. They published their findings on facial recognition this month in the Proceedings of The Royal Society B, Biological Sciences.
Rob Jenkins works in the psychology department at the University of York. He said the researchers’ study centered on “the number of faces people actually know”. The study suggests our facial recognition abilities help us to deal with the many different faces we see on the screens, as well as those we know, like family and friends.
For the human study, people spent one hour writing down as many faces from their personal lives as possible. Some examples may include people they went to school with, people they work with and family members. Then, they wrote down famous faces they know, such as actors, politicians and other public people.
The results showed that the participants(参与者) knew between 1,000 and 10,000 faces. Jenkins said one explanation may be that some people have a natural ability for remembering faces. “There are differences in how much attention people pay to faces and how well they process the information,” he said. Jenkins also said it could be because of different social environments. Some people may have grown up in more populated places. So, they may have had more social contact throughout their lives.
The people in the study included 25 men and women students from two universities. They were between 18 and 61 years old. Researchers think age may be an interesting area for further research. Jenkins said it is possible that we gather more faces throughout our lifetime. But, he added, there also may be an age at which we start to find it harder to remember all of those faces.
8. What was the new study mainly about
A. How long people can remember faces. B. When people will forget faces.
C. Why people can deal with different faces. D. How many faces people can know.
9. What do we know about the participants in the study
A. They are good at recognizing faces.
B. They remember more famous people.
C. They have different social backgrounds.
D. They try their best to avoid social contact.
10. What can we learn about the last paragraph
A. We are sure to gather more faces as we age.
B. The future research may focus more on age.
C. The participants in the study are in their youth.
D. It may be harder to remember faces of different ages.
11. What is the text
A. An interview. B. A research report.
C. A character story. D. A scientific novel.
D 9. C 10. B 11. B

根据倒数第二段的“Jenkins also said it could be because of different social environments. Some people may have grown up in more populated places. So, they may have had more social contact throughout their lives.(Jenkins 还说,这可能是因为不同的社会环境。有些人可能是在人口较多的地方长大的。因此,他们一生中可能有更多的社会接触)”可知,研究中的参与者有不同的社会背景。故选C。
【10题详解】
细节理解题。根据最后一段的“Researchers think age may be an interesting area for further research. (研究人员认为,年龄可能是进一步研究的一个有趣领域)”可知,将来的研究可能更多地关注年龄。故选B。
【11题详解】

When you have to cancel your Thanksgiving plans due to the spread of the COVID-19, you may find yourself craving companionship as much as that pumpkin pie. That’s because parts of the brain respond to loneliness much like they react to hunger, according to a study in Nature Neuroscience.
Researchers from the Massachusetts Institute of Technology scanned the brains of 40 healthy, social young adults after 10 hours of either fasting (禁食) or social isolation (隔离). They found that after being alone, participants’ neurological responses to social signals were similar to hungry people reacting to food — that is, certain areas of the brain linked to desire were turned on to start working.
For an isolated person, a picture of people laughing together caused the same areas of the brain to light up as when a hungry person looked at a big plate of pasta.
“Just like hunger is an unpleasant sensation that motivates us to seek out food and thirst motivates us to seek out water, loneliness is a biological need that motivates us to reconnect to others,” Holt-Lunstad told Insider.
Researchers were surprised to find that people who were prevented from socializing became much more focused on that need and less reactive to hunger. As their loneliness increased, they became less responsive to images of food.
These latest findings suggest that the relationship between food and loneliness might be more complicated than we thought, despite the popular opinion of stress-eating to cope with social isolation. More research is needed to understand the complex ways people deal with loneliness.
Studies like this can help scientists understand how the brain processes loneliness, and possibly reduce the negative consequences. However, although loneliness may be similar to hunger, fixing it isn’t as easy as serving someone a hearty dinner because people are unique and they need varying levels of social interactions to meet their needs.
12. The underlined word “craving” in the first paragraph can be replaced by .
A. avoiding B. desiring C. preferring D. ignoring
13. Researchers scanned the brains of the young adults .
A. to find their brain responses to both loneliness and hunger
B. to provide explanations for their feeling lonely and hungry
C. to find how loneliness can have a negative impact on health
D. after they have been hungry and socially isolated for 10 hours
14. What conclusion can be drawn from what Holt-Lunstad said in Paragraph 4
A. Hunger is an unpleasant sensation.
B. Hunger and thirst motivate us to feed ourselves.
C. Socializing is supposed to be basic human need as it is.
D. The effects of loneliness on health are comparable to other factors.
15. What does the last paragraph imply
A. Loneliness may be fixed just as hunger is satisfied.
B. Situations of loneliness are complicated and hard to cope with.
C. Scientists have understood how the brain processes loneliness.
D. Loneliness is such a common and serious problem that we all have to suffer.
B 13. A 14. C 15. B

根据划线词上文“When you have to cancel your Thanksgiving plans due to the spread of the COVID-19, you may find yourself”以及后文“That’s because parts of the brain respond to loneliness much like they react to hunger, according to a study in Nature Neuroscience. (根据《自然神经科学》的一项研究,这是因为大脑的某些部分对孤独的反应就像对饥饿的反应一样。)”可知,大脑的某些部分对孤独的反应就像对饥饿的反应一样,即说明当你因为COVID-19的传播而不得不取消感恩节计划时,你可能会发现自己对友谊的渴望和南瓜派一样强烈。故划线词意思是“渴望”。故选B。
【13题详解】
细节理解题。根据第二段“They found that after being alone, participants’ neurological responses to social signals were similar to hungry people reacting to food — that is, certain areas of the brain linked to desire were turned on to start working. (他们发现,在独处之后,参与者对社交信号的神经反应与饥饿的人对食物的反应相似——也就是说,大脑中与欲望相关的某些区域被激活,开始工作。)”可知,研究人员扫描了这些年轻人的大脑是为了发现他们的大脑对孤独和饥饿的反应。故选A。
根据第四段““Just like hunger is an unpleasant sensation that motivates us to seek out food and thirst motivates us to seek out water, loneliness is a biological need that motivates us to reconnect to others,” Holt-Lunstad told Insider. (“就像饥饿是一种不愉快的感觉,促使我们去寻找食物,口渴促使我们去寻找水一样,孤独是一种生理需求,促使我们与他人重新建立联系,”Holt-Lunstad告诉内幕网。)”可推知,交际本来就应该是人类的基本需求。故选C。
【15题详解】
推理判断题。根据最后一段“Studies like this can help scientists understand how the brain processes loneliness, and possibly reduce the negative consequences. However, although loneliness may be similar to hunger, fixing it isn’t as easy as serving someone a hearty dinner because people are unique and they need varying levels of social interactions to meet their needs. (这样的研究可以帮助科学家了解大脑是如何处理孤独的,并可能减少消极后果。然而,尽管孤独可能类似于饥饿,但解决它并不像为某人提供丰盛的晚餐那么容易,因为每个人都是独一无二的,他们需要不同程度的社会互动来满足他们的需求。)”可推知,最后一段暗示了孤独的情况很复杂,很难处理。故选B。

47. 阅读下面材料,根据其内容和所给段落开头语续写两段,使之构成一篇完整的短文。
When I was a kid about twelve years old, I had a lot of freckles(雀斑). I had reached the age when I had begun to really look at myself in the mirror, and I was overwhelmed. Apparently my mother was too, because sometimes she’d look at me and shake her head.
I had a cousin whose name was Janette Elizabeth. She looked exactly like her name sounds because she had a flawless peaches-and-cream complexion (肤色). I couldn’t help comparing myself with her and thinking that my life would be a lot different if I had beautiful skin too.
And then, in the back pages of Janette Elizabeth’s magazine, I found the answer: an advertisement for freckle-remover cream. I knew that I could afford it if I saved my money, and I did. The ad assured me that the product would work well. For three weeks I went to the mailbox every day precisely at the time the mail was delivered. I knew that if someone else in my family got the mail, I would never hear the end of it. There was no way that they would let me open the box in private.
Three weeks later, my package finally came. I went to my room with it, sat on the edge of my bed, and opened it. I was sure that I was looking at a miracle. When I got up the next morning, I applied the cream all over my body. Then I took my hoe (锄头) and went with my brother and cousins to hoe the field, where I got rid of some tiger lilies (虎百合), seemingly ugly with black and small spots.
The sun was so strong that even my face started to burn. By the end of the day, when I came back to the house, my family, knowing nothing about the freckle-remover cream, began to say things like “I’ve never seen you with that many freckles before.” When I saw myself in the mirror, I found my freckles even darker and clearer. I dissolved into tears and hid in the bathroom.

______________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________
My mother called me to the dinner table, but I ignored her. When she came to the bathroom door and demanded that I come out and have a meal, I burst out of the door, tears streaming down my cheeks. Before she stopped me, I stormed into my room and slammed the door shut behind me. Looking into the mirror, I saw a girl with more and darker freckles on the face instead of peaches-and-cream complexion. Only then did I realize that the cream had a reverse effect when wearing it in the sun. I threw myself down on the bed and sobbed.
After what seemed a century, I heard a gentle knock on my bedroom’s door. Hesitating for a moment, with puffy eyes and still wet cheeks, I shuffled across the room to open the door. At the door stood my mother and Janette with a big bunch of tiger lilies, which were covered with black spots but amazingly beautiful. I stared at them in stunned surprise, not knowing what to say. My mother held me in her warm embrace. “There are all kinds of flowers, and they are all beautiful and sweet,” said she. Hearing this, and smelling the fragrance of the tiger lilies, the freckles on my face seemed to have magically faded.

Researchers were surprised to find that people who were prevented from socializing became much more focused on that need, and less reactive to hunger.
