In summer, lightning storms(闪电风暴)often happen. Some of us don’t take them seriously. In fact, they are very dangerous for people and they can even make people die at once. So how do we keep safe during a rainstorm
If you are indoors, stay away from windows and doors during a lightning storm. Don’t take a shower or do any dishes, because lightning can travel through water. Turn off the TV and computer. Never use the phone. Lightning can also travel through the phone line and hit you.
If you are outdoors during a lightning storm, never take shelter under a tree, because the lightning can hit the tall tree and travel through the tree to hit you. You should stay away from anything that is metal(金属). Try to get into your car and close all the windows or go into a building at once. No one can change the weather. But if we read the signs around us correctly, we can tell how the weather will be. This way of telling what the weather will be like on the following day or two is called weather forecasting. For many centuries and in all countries, people have studied the weather and tried to make weather forecasting. Rings around the sun are a sign of coming rain. Many people feel in their bones the coming of wet weather—they feel joints (关节). Some birds fly high if fine weather is coming, but they fly near the ground if rainy or stormy weather is on the way. It is probably because of the insects which they are hunting that they fly low. If you see a rainbow during rainy weather, this is a sign that the weather will become clear and fine. Such rainbows come in the evening. If the stars twinkle (闪烁), then fine weather will continue. If a fog appears in the morning just above a river, then the day will be warm. If the sunset is mostly red in colour, rainy weather will probably come. Most of the above sayings have been made by the people who have used their eyes and brains to make weather forecasting.

If you feel sad, remember not to watch a happy movie. A sad movie may be good for you. Some scientists at Ohio State University found that sad movies can make people happier. They showed their study in a magazine called Communication Reaches.

The 361 college students answered questions from the scientists before, after and three times during the movie to find out their different feeling, such as sadness.

“I want to live my life to the fullest, and this movie made me think a lot,” one student wrote.
Silvia Knobloch-Westerwick, the head of the study, said that bad moods (情绪) would make people more thoughtful. “Good moods are usually a sign that everything is fine. You don’t have to worry, and you don’t have to think about your problems in your life,” she said. “But bad moods make you feel terrible. That year, I was a Junior 2 student. Falling off the stairs hurt me in the head. Almost everyone thought I was dead. But they were wrong. However, it was difficult to get back to normal(正常的) life. I had to leave school and learn everything, walking, talking, and yes, maths.
To help me with that task, Mrs. Pillar volunteered to come to the hospital and later to my house once a week. We began with basic maths skills. As time passed by, I made progress.
I remember very vividly how she came to my home on Sundays, sat with me at the kitchen table, and threw different coins on the table. She asked me to show her 38 cents, 17 cents, 63 cents. It was challenging, but she also made it fun.
After a year and a half, I had progressed a lot, both in body and mind, to return to school. Seven years later, I graduated from the University of Texas at the top of my class.
As years went by, I always kept in touch with Mrs. Pillar. Unluckily, one day my parents told me that Mrs. Pillar had been in hospital because she suffered a stroke(中风).
Now it was my turn to help her. Mrs. Pillar lay in bed, unable to speak or know anybody around. I pulled some coins out of my pocket, dropped them on her bed, and asked her to show me 12 cents. The nurse thought that my action was very strange until one day Mrs. Pillar smiled happily as I began working with her—just as she had worked with me years before. She made progress everyday and was moved out of ICU(重症监护室) and finally out of hospital.
One day, I called to wish her a happy New Year. She spoke into the phone excitedly, “Happy New Year to you and your family, Michael. Thank you for everything you’ve done for me.” I quickly said, “Thank you for everything you’ve done for me.”
Mrs. Pillar was one of my Junior 2 teachers, but she taught me so much more about life than only maths.
