A colleague recently sent me an article, Cutting back on waste is possible—if you can afford it, to read. It argued that reducing waste—food related, in particular—is an expensive effort and a near impossibility for anyone working low wage jobs with little extra time. The conclusion Zero waste is something only suitable for people
who can afford it, not for those who are struggling to make a living.
However, I disagree with the idea that zero waste must be all or nothing. I think this is an unfortunate attitude that prevents valuable progress toward reducing one's food related waste. When we get too hung up on the idea of so called zero waste and of being like the zero waste superstar Bea Johnson who can fit years of trash in a single jar, we start missing the broader point. The goal, after all, is to make smarter shopping decisions and establish practices that are sustainable(可持续的)for us, with our own unique resources and living situations.
I live in a small rural town with no fancy zero waste stores. My husband and I both work full time. I am uninterested in spending my free time doing DIY projects and driving from store to store in search of perfect packaging. Instead, I just do the best I can.
When I first read about Bea Johnson's multi stop grocery shopping routine, I tried to copy it. That lasted a few weeks before I gave up. Unlike her, I still had babies to look after, and I did not live in San Francisco where stores are closer together than in rural Ontario. Instead, I've resigned myself to the supermarket being the main supply of food and trying to work with it.
Now, when I enter the supermarket on a once weekly basis, I view all packaging with a critical eye. I make constant comparisons between how one brand packages its food and another. That is the main reason in deciding what to buy, though I also consider the unit price, the place of origin and the ingredients.
1.What is the idea of the article recommended by the author's colleague
A.Cutting down on waste costs much. B.Food related waste is unavoidable.
C.Most people can afford zero waste. D.The poor care little about food waste.
2.How does the author understand the concept of zero waste
A.It is related to recycling our resources.
B.It prevents people from reducing waste.
C.It encourages reasonable green practices.
D.It means fitting your trash in a single jar.
3.Why did the author fail to follow Bea Johnson
A.Her love for shopping was deeply rooted. B.She hardly knew about food packaging.
C.She didn't receive her husband's support. D.Her living situations differed from Bea Johnson's.
4.What's the best title for the text
A.Live in a Small Town for a Zero waste Life B.Stop Wasting and Build a Greener Society
C.Take Advantage of Local Zero waste Shops D.Forget Zero Waste and Be Better Shoppers
根据第一段中的“It argued that reducing waste—food related,...little extra time.”及“Zero waste is...make a living.”
根据第二段中的“The goal, after all, is to make smarter shopping decisions and establish practices that are sustainable(可持续的)for us, with our own unique resources and living situations.”
根据第四段中的“That lasted...than in rural Ontario.”
因此“Forget Zero Waste and Be Better Shoppers”适合当文章标题。

The Toy Tree
[2022·广东省惠州市高三第一次调研] It was a bare tree with thin branches which looked like they might snap (折断) at any moment, but it was the only tree in the estate gardens. In spring, the tree cheered up the grey concrete with its blossom. And, in summer, its shade comforted the restless heat.
Gabe loved the tree. He and his friends played by it all the time. The tree's blessing for the community, but not for Mr. Snider, the caretaker, who hated the tree. When he had to mow (割) the grass around it or sweep its blossoms or fallen leaves from the path, he would grumble (咕哝), “It's in my way.” or “Who has to clean up all this mess Me, that's who!”
Sometimes he threatened to cut it down. One morning before the coming New Year, Gabe spotted him walked towards the tree with a chainsaw (电锯). He shouted, “Mum! What's Mr. Snider doing?” Mum put down her knitting needles — she was knitting everyone scarves and came over to the window. Gabe grabbed her hand and ran down two flights of stairs to the garden. Soon they were standing between Mr. Snider and the tree.
“Out of my way,” said the caretaker. “Time for this eyesore (眼中钉) to go.”
“This eyesore is of great public interest.” Mum tried to sound important.
“And we love this tree,” begged Gabe.
“Not a good enough reason.” Mr. Snider was getting his chainsaw ready.
Gabe desperately tried to think of more reasons to keep the tree, then he remembered the toy tree he'd seen in town. It had colourful gift tags (礼品签) on it and written on every tag was the name of a toy a child had wished for. Mum had explained to him that if someone took a tag and bought the gift on it, the charity would send it to a child who might not get New Year presents.
注意:1.续写词数应为150 左右;
Gabe said, “It is going to be a toy tree.”

By the weekend, the charity tags had arrived.

Gabe said, “It is going to be a toy tree.” He explained that they were going to decorate it and put tags on it so they could buy presents for children who needed them. Then he flashed a look for help at his mum.“Yes,” Mum said enthusiastically, “Mr Snider, we're decorating it this weekend.” Mr. Snider looked suspicious. He almost turned purple trying to think up an argument, but he was beaten. He lowered his chainsaw and stormed off. That evening, Gabe and his mum put up posters to let everyone know about the toy tree, and they contacted the charity to get tags.
By the weekend, the charity tags had arrived. The whole community came to decorate the tree. They sang as they hung tags, and it felt like a party. The bare tree soon looked dazzling. Everyone went home, beamingly, with a tag from the toy tree. As Gabe stepped back to admire everyone's handiwork, he spotted Mr Snider looking out of his window with a frown. Gabe waved at him. “We leave one tag for you!” With hesitation, Mr. Snider let out a sigh, then walked to the toy tree and took it down. At that moment, the tree was not an eyesore any more.

Mum had explained to him that if someone took a tag and bought the gift on it, the charity would send it to a child
who might not get New Year presents.
