In 1996, author and mountain climber Jon Krakauer attempted to climb Mount Qomolangma. While he was successful in his climb, the mountain was hit by bad weather that day, and eight other climbers—some of his good friends—were killed. Less than a year later, Krakauer and five other men attempted to climb Mount Rakekniven in Antarctica.

Read together
Antarctica is a frozen, unspoiled wilderness and the earth’s coldest continent. For more than a century, adventures have been coming here. Although much of the continent has been explored, very few people have climbed its mountains and even fewer have reached the top of those peaks. But now a team that includes Qomolangma climber Jon Krakauer steps into the world of snow and ice in the region of Queen Maud Land, Antarctica.
They must cross almost 64 kilometers to reach their goal…this thin, very steep peak named Rakekniven. It has never been climbed before.
For Jon, still troubled by the loss of his friends on Qomolangma, the challenge is not only physical, but personal.
Lead climber Conrad Anker feels his way up the rock face, climbing along the line of a crack in the wall. It's a difficult, dangerous climb and the men are anxious. Then, the weather changes. The Antarctic sky darkens and storm clouds appear. The team is forced to climb down the peak. No one knows how long the storm will last, so the climbers decide to wait in their tents for the bad weather to pass.
Two days later, the weather clears and the team returns to the peak to begin the climb again. Jon helps to carry equipment and supplies up the side of the peak. As it gets dark, the team decides to spend the night in tents that will hang about 450 meters off the ground. It is a dangerous location, but they finally get their tents set up and relax with a hot cup of coffee.
The next morning, the final part of the climb is difficult and dangerous. Rocks from the peak fall easily. Despite the many hardships, Jon is determined to keep climbing.
The rock on this mountain is very, very sharp. Each time you put your hand in a crack to pull yourself up, no matter how careful you are, you will probably cut your skin.
It's a hard climb, but Jon is enjoying the challenge. It's a feeling he hasn't had since Qomolangma.
At long last, after 10 days of difficult climbing, the team finally reaches the top.
They are the first. In a world where people have been nearly everywhere, no one has ever been here before. Jon brings out the flag he brought to Qomolangma.
Jon puts his flag on the top of the mountain. He has reached his goal.
After you watch
1. Why do you think Krakauer wanted to climb another mountain again so soon after climbing Mount Qomolangma
I think Krakauer wanted to climb another mountain so soon because he had lost friends on the previous climb and wanted to succeed for them.
2. The video says that the challenge of the climb was “not only physical, but personal” for Krakauer. What do you think this means
I think this means he had to overcome the physical challenges of climbing in those conditions, but also the personal emotions of climbing so soon after losing friends while climbing.
3. How might a difficult challenge help a person overcome sadness or other bad feelings
A person facing sadness or bad feelings may feel depressed with no desire to do anything but overcoming a difficult challenge could prove their self-worth and show them life goes on and is still worth living.
Courage is not the absence of despair, on the contrary, it is the ability to move forward despite despair.
勇气并不是没有绝望,相反,它是一种尽管有绝望,但依然能够奋力前进的能力。
Do you have any trouble in your life What is it How did you overcome it Write a short passage to describe it.
