六、书面表达(共 1 小题,计 15 分)
At present, more and more families are keeping pets, especially dogs. Recently, we have
had a discussion on the advantages and disadvantages of keeping dogs. Different people have
different points of view.
Some people agree with the idea. First, dogs can guard their yards and protect them. Second,
dogs can accompany the old and keep them from feeling lonely. What's more, they can help
develop a sense of responsibility. However, other people are in disagreement. For one thing,
dogs are not easy to take care of. For another, they pollute the environment and bring some
diseases. Moreover, some dogs even bite people, being a threat to people's health.
From my point of view, I think we can keep dogs, because they are our friends and bring us
a lot of fun, But at the same time, we should teach them how to behave properly on streets and
have them checked regularly to prevent any diseases.

It was the coldest winter ever. Many animals died because of the
cold weather. The porcupines (豪猪 ) faced the problem as well. But
these clever porcupines had an idea. They decided to huddle (蜷缩 )
together to stay warm. It seemed like a good idea to make it through
the cold winter. But there was a problem—their pointy quills (尖尖的
刺) started hurting their closest friends!
After some time, the porcupines couldn’t stand it any longer. They decided to leave some
room around themselves. However, as they moved away from each other, the cold air came in,
and some of them started to get ill and die.
Now they faced a difficult choice—either put up with the quills or face death. After careful
thinking, the porcupines decided to go back to huddle together. They found out that living with
pain from their close friends was a small price to pay for the warmth of being together.
And so, the porcupines learned an important lesson: Sometimes, a little discomfort in
relationships is not a big problem if it means staying warm and living through the cold. From
that day on, they happily stuck together, quills and all, living a warm and long life.

What do coaches look for in basketball players It is important to be tall, strong and fast.
But that is not enough. A new study says coaches care more about what’s in a player’s head.
Michael Rogers works at the University of South Australia. For the new study, he surveyed
90 coaches from 23 countries. They coached college and international basketball players, both
men and women. Rogers asked what they looked for in players.
The coaches listed 35 important skills. Some were physical, such as speed. Others were
mental (精神的), such as confidence. According to them, the mental ones were at the top of the
petitiveness, team spirit and outlook (见解) were the top three. Only one physical skill
made the top ten. That is agility—the ability to move quickly and easily.
This doesn’t mean physical skills aren’t important. But they are not enough. To do well at
the top level, you need the right mindset (观念模式). “Coaches want players who are easy to
teach and work hard,” said Rogers.
According to Timothy Baghurst, a teacher at Florida State University in the US, few
players are taught mental skills. Most coaches don’t teach communication skills. They also don’t
teach how to control feelings. But these skills are important for players.
Grant Tomkinson helped with the study. He thinks it goes beyond (超出) sports. It teaches
life lessons. It shows us that it is important to pay attention to mental skills. “The mental skills
can lead to success in all areas of life,” he said.

A 37-year-old father from Texas woke up one day and was ready to go to school, thinking
it was the 1990s. He forgot what had happened in his last 20 years’ life, 42 ever marrying his
wife Ruth and having a daughter.
In July of last year, Daniel Porter, a hearing 43 from Texas woke up in his bed just like
any other morning, but he thought something was wrong. A woman who he had never seen
before was sleeping next to him. When he looked in the mirror, he couldn’t believe what he saw
because an “old and fat” man was 44 at him. Later, Daniel thought it was time to go to school,
not knowing that he had 45 from high school nearly twenty years before, and that the strange
woman in his bed was his wife, with whom he had a 10-year-old daughter.
Ruth had to calm him down and explain that she was his wife and that he had not been
kidnapped (绑架) by a stranger. It sounds funny, but it was an 46 experience for both of them.
“He woke up one morning and just had no idea who I was or where he was. He was very
puzzled. I could tell he didn’t recognize the room,” Ruth said. “He thought that he’d been
kidnapped. I could see him looking for an escape route.”
Doctors don’t know 47 what caused Daniel Porter’s amnesia (记忆缺失 ), but they
believe that it was a side 48 of emotional (情感的) stress. Daniel has been receiving 49
treatment over the past year. Will he get his lost memories back No one knows yet.
