October 21 was a very dark day in Texas. Not only did Hurricane Hanna destroy homes, it caused the largest business damage in Texas’s history. The worst thing is Hanna’s destructive force nearly wiped out most power poles and power lines. According to Center Point Energy, Hurricane Hanna affected 2.15 million customers. Believe it or not, Paula Reed and her family consider this hurricane a blessing. When Paula was a girl, she was an orphan, but was taken in by her stepmom, Antonia Flores. Reed lost contact with Flores and had been trying desperately to locate her for the past few years. Before the hurricane, Reed and her family moved away from Galveston to a San Antonio shelter. There, she reunited with Flores after 30 long years! The moment they saw each other, their lives were changed.

Can eating a chocolate bar every day really prevent age-related memory loss No. But a new research shows that large amounts of flavones(黄酮类), substances found in cocoa, tea and some kinds of vegetables, may improve age-related memory failure.
Dr. Scott Small is a professor of neurology (神经病学) at Columbia University in New York City. He is the lead writer of a research paper describing the effects of cocoa flavones on brain activity. His study involved 37 volunteers aged between 50 and 69. Researchers gave them a high-level flavones drink made from cocoa beans or a low-level flavones drink. For a period of three months, some subjects got 900 milligrams of flavones a day. The others got 10 milligrams of flavones each day. Brain imaging and memory tests were given to each study subject before and after the study. Dr. Small says that the subjects who had the high-level flavones drink showed much improvement on memory tests.
The researchers warn that more work is needed to be done because this study was performed only on a small group. Dr. Joann Manson is the lead researcher of a four-year study involving 18,000 adults. This study will use flavones capsules(胶囊). The study subjects will be divided into two groups and will take two pills per day. The capsules used will all look the same. But one group's capsules will contain flavones, while the other group will take capsules made of an inactive substance, or placebo
Dr. Manson says it's not necessary for people to start eating more chocolate, because 3 persons would have to eat a huge amount of chocolate to get the same level of flavones given to the rest subjects. He adds many manufacturers have planned to remove the flavones from their chocolate products. Similarly, Dr. Manson says a cocoa-based flavones extract（提取）may be developed in the future But he says that more studies are needed to see how much flavones is good for our health.

We’ve been covering standing desks for a long time now because experts agree that sitting all day is killing us. We want to be productive while also keeping our bodies healthy. Over the years, there have been several solutions to this from fixed standing desks to adjustable ones, portable desks to ones that change into shelves.
However, the most high tech and elegant solution has to be this new smart desk called The Stir Kinetic Desk. The desk learns your daily behaviors and moves between a sitting and standing height regularly throughout the day to keep you moving without interrupting your work flow.
You can program specific sitting and standing intervals or let the desk set the schedule. If you tend to sit while returning emails in the morning, but always want to stand during that afternoon conference call, the desk will learn those regular habits and adjust the schedule to fit them. Of course, the desk can always be manually lowered or raised by using the touch screen on the lower left comer of the desk.
When switching positions, the desk gently dips and rises to let you know that a change is coming up. If you’re not ready to switch positions at that time, you can tap the touchscreen to stay sitting or standing for a while longer.
The built-in touchscreen also keeps track of your daily sitting and standing times and tells you how many calories you’ve burned. You can even set goals for how long or often you want to stand. The desk also works with fitness devices like the FitBit to track your movements.
All of that smart tech doesn’t come cheap though. The M1 desk, which is the everyday model, runs a steep $2,990, while the more executive model with added features, the F1, goes for$4,190.
While expensive, it’s worth thinking of how much time we spend at our desks. Much like a good mattress(床垫), a good desk that works with you is worth the investment. Hopefully in a few years these smart, integrated desks will be more common and less expensive.

M: I heard that you and Cathy hung out last weekend, didn’t you
W: Yes. We had a great time.
M: Where did you go first
W: First we went shopping. There are some wonderful stores on the pedestrian street. We bought some boots and clothes.
M: How much did you spend
W: Each of us spent the same amount of money we earn in a week, perhaps.
M: So, how much do you earn every month
W: Cathy and I do the same job in the same company. But she got a 20 percent raise this year while I didn’t. Our monthly pay was the same last year, which was $2,500.
M: Why didn’t you get the raise
W: Cathy has been in the company longer than me, and her achievements in her work are outstanding.
M: I see. So, what did you do after shopping
W: We knew there was a new Italian restaurant and a Chinese restaurant on the pedestrian street, but we went to a Thai restaurant since they gave us a discount.
M: How lucky you were. What did you do in the afternoon then
W: There was a film being played, which both of us wanted to see for a long time, so we spent the afternoon in the cinema.

If you struggle to spend more than a few moments away from your computer, then a new invention could be for you. Two Dutch inventors have developed a pair of jeans that give a whole new meaning to the phrase “laptop”. The jeans, known as Beauty and the Geek, come with a fully functional keyboard, a mouse and speakers into the upper leg of the jeans. They are the idea of design company Nieuwe Heren, run by Erik de Nijs and Tim Smit. The Two made the trousers themselves and they are designed to give a user ease of movement while still being in control of the computer. “They’re not that heavy,” de Nijs said. “With the flexible key board, small speakers, and a small mouse, they are only a little bit heavier than your regular jeans. He added, “The idea was that you could log in to your computer and control it without sitting in a closed environment behind your desk.” The jeans are of a modern style and have a back pocket that has been specially designed to cover the mouse, which uses a wire to stay attached. They stay connected to the laptop via wireless technology and are expected to sell at around ￡250---if they ever make it into the market. De Nijs added, “The whole project is too complex and we don’t have enough money right now to get it ready for the market.”
