Looking for a place to take a rest, sip a cup of coffee and have a furry companion Welcome to animal-themed cafes.
In recent years, the combination of pets and catering has become incredibly popular in many cities throughout China. While many cafes started out offering the company of cats and dogs, others are expanding their range. Some cafes include animals like squirrels, raccoons and even capybaras.
In reviews, internet users have commented that their main reason for visiting these businesses is to interact closely with animals they have only seen from afar.
“The customers love animals. They are curious about these pets and want to raise one at home, but circumstances don’t allow it,” said pet cafe owner Tian Rui. Liu Jing, a Beijing resident who works in finance, loves pigs, but her parents would not endorse her getting one as a pet.The 24-year-old had to admire the animals through videos and images. But now,she can have close contact with an adorable pig every weekend in a pet café.
Also, these pet cafes serve as a shelter for those who find comfort in being around animals. “In this place, you can get close to the cute little ones in a very comfortable way without having to worry about safety and hygiene(卫生) -- overall, it is an extremely comfortable experience,” said Zhao Ming from Tianjin, 30, a frequent pet cafe visitor.
Animal lovers also expect the pet cafes to change people’s attitudes toward pets. Animals like ducks, pigs and sheep have been served as food for many years. People hardly see them as pets. But the pet cafes help shift their attitude from seeing them as playthings to regarding them as family members or close friends.
“Whether at home or in stores, these little animals are there for companionship and they bring warmth to our hearts. They care and understand just like family members. They give us much more than the love we give to them,” Zhao said.

During a decline in tourism, one national park in Thailand has seen a dramatic rise in “visitors” recently. So many are the hermit crabs(寄居蟹)flooding into the otherwise empty beaches of Koh Lanta that shells(贝壳)for them to live in have become in short supply.
The Thai government moved quickly to ease the housing shortage, launching a public appeal for empty shells that netted over 200 kg. On December 5 these were distributed around the park in a ceremony.
Hermit crabs rely on shells to protect their soft bodies, moving to larger shells as they grow. On Koh Lanta and the surrounding smaller islands, their rapid increase seems to be a natural phenomenon, rather than directly related to the absence of tourists. But the shortage of shells may be man-made:pretty ones have long been gathered to be sold as goods. Crabs had begun to make do with potential death-traps such as plastic caps and bottles.
The shell drive was part of a government initiative to “regain the balance of nature”. “I have instructed all national parks to do whatever it takes,” says Varawut Silpa-archa,the minister for natural resources. His inspiration comes from the pause in tourism brought on by COVID-19. A ban on international visitors and the closure of national parks have helped nature recover, bringing endangered leatherback turtles back onto Thai beaches. In the coastal provinces of Phang Nga and Phuket, turtles have laid the largest number of eggs for 20 years.
The government has decided to try to copy the short break forced on it by COVID-19 in future. From now on, all national parks will be required to close for a short period during the off-season and to limit the number of tourists through a reservation system when they are open. Although such restrictions mean reduced earnings from tourism in the short term, in the longer run more parks may help to keep the tourists coming.
8. What happened to the beaches of Koh Lanta recently
A. They got flooded by seawater.
B. They became completely empty.
C. They were packed with hermit crabs.
D. They saw a constant stream of tourists.
9. What contributed to the housing shortage for hermit crabs
A. Natural disasters.
B. Human activities.
C. Their preference for bottles.
D. The government's involvement.
10. Why are turtles mentioned in paragraph 4
A. To warn turtles are dying out.
B. To prove beaches are their ideal habitats.
C. To stress ecological diversity of Thailand.
D. To illustrate the birth of Varawut’s inspiration.
11. Which of the following can be the best title for the text
A. Developing Economy or Protecting Animals
B. Closing National Parks or Drawing More Visitors
C. Governments are Responsible for the Balance of Nature
D. Authorities Help to Find Shelters for Homeless Hermit Crabs

If Mars were the popular kid in school, Venus(金星)would be the unwelcome one sitting in the corner, largely ignored. Venus has nearly the same mass and size as Earth, but being closer to the sun,it gets nearly twice as much heat from the sun.
However, instead of having a climate that is just a warmer version of Earth’s, Venus's surface and atmosphere are unbearable: clouds of sulphuric acid blanket the planet, while at ground level, it is hot enough to melt lead. Despite this, there is now a sign that Venus may harbour life.
Jane Greaves at Cardiff University, UK, and her colleagues recently detected phosphine(磷化氢)in Venus’s atmosphere, with one potential explanation that it is the by-product of biology. That is because the only way this gas is made on Earth is in laboratories or by microbes(微生物). Though this doesn't mean it was produced by life on Venus, attempts to find non--biological explanations for its presence have so far failed.
Our best way of confirming or rejecting the possibility of life on Venus is to go and have a proper look. While Mars has been the focus of interplanetary exploration efforts lately, the phosphine discovery lets people look at Venus in a new light. As NASA administrator Jim Bridenstine tweeted: “It's time to prioritize Venus.”
In the months and years to come, computer simulations will be used to further study the possible chemistries of the atmosphere on Venus. More laboratory experiments will be conducted to try to identify other ways the phosphine there could be produced. However, there is no guarantee that these efforts will reveal the true nature of this substance on Venus. A newly-proposed strategy is to directly sample the atmosphere and surface of Venus. By doing so, we would be able to take direct measurements of phosphine.
The discovery of phosphine in Venus’s atmosphere is a great accomplishment. The scientific efforts may be just what we need to finally refocus on this neglected world. Possibly, the quiet kid in the corner may get the last laugh.
12. In theory, what’s Venus expected to be like
A. It is almost as large as Earth.
B. It has nearly the same mass as Earth.
C. It has a warmer Earth-like climate.
D. It has the unbearable surface and atmosphere.
13. What can the discovery of phosphine on Venus indicate
A. There might exist signs of life.
B. This kind of gas is very common.
C. Many products can be made with it.
D. Experiments were once conducted there.
14. What is paragraph 5 mainly about
A. The importance of observations.
B. The power of computer simulations.
C. The approaches to exploring phosphine.
D. The necessity to analyse phosphine.
15. Which can best describe the author’s attitude to the exploration of Venus
A. Casual. B. Supportive. C. Cautious. D. Doubtful.

When a bridge in Austin, Texas was repaired, engineers added small gaps running along the length of its bottom, 4 made a good home for bats, and soon the bridge was the home of thousands of bats. At first, people were afraid 5 the bats. Now, they have come to value 6 (they)winged neighbors. The bats are a tourist 7 (attract), and they eat lots of bugs every night.
There are also structures built with the objective of 8 (bring)wildlife into the city. The Beijing Olympic Forest Park is a good example. The park 9 (use)native plants and created open, natural spaces for wildlife. The result is a zone where over 160 species of birds can move about 10 (free). If we learn to share our space, we can become better neighbors to the wildlife around us.

He has found that among the 90 wind instruments 4 (identify)by the Chinese Music Dictionary, 47 are made of bamboo.
During the past three 5 (decade), the talented musician traveled around the country 6 (find)the finest materials for making bamboo instruments. The small balcony at his home in Beijing has become his studio 7 instrument making.
He also gathered a group of musicians to form the country’ s first bamboo orchestra. While 8 (realize)his expectation, Wang is also proud that the orchestra’ s birth and development are also an effort of protecting the environment. Bamboo is among 9 fastest growing plants on earth, gaining 1.2 meters every day under appropriate conditions.
