To really know a country, you need to understand its culture and history.
That was why journalist and media expert Zhang Ciyun began his work on a six-volume(册)exploration of ancient Chinese wisdom as reflected in myths, classics works, idioms, paintings, historical figures and architecture.
The English-language edition of the book series was unveiled at last week’s Shanghai Book Fair. The series caters for an increasing number of foreign readers who are deeply interested in traditional Chinese culture.
“The idea of the book series came to me nearly three decades ago, when I discovered how little foreigners knew about Chinese culture”, Zhang said. “Oh, they knew about kung fu movies, the Great Wall and the terracotta warriors, and had vague impressions of Chinese emperors. But they wanted to know more about Chinese culture.”
Zhang, a founder and former editor-in-chief of the English-language Shanghai Daily, is fluent in English. He draws on that skill to tell the stories of ancient China in the everyday language and experiences of native English speakers.
Zhang said ancient culture has had a far-reaching impact on the behavior and thinking of contemporary Chinese, and gives foreign readers insight into modern-day China.
He recalled a Shanghai Daily survey of readers that showed foreigners had great curiosity about Chinese culture. But at that time, books that might help them explore deeper into that culture were pieces scattered(散布)over different publications. There were no books in English providing easy access to Chinese history and culture.
“As a journalist working for an English-language newspaper, I really wanted to do something to meet that need,” he said. “I decided to use my writing skills to tell ancient stories about Chinese culture, especially its traditional aspects.”
He began his project in about 1993, beginning with a series of articles explaining the stories behind Chinese idioms. His first works were compiled into one book, which received positive feedback and was later translated into German and other foreign languages.

A.They involve various Chinese culture forms.
B.They have been translated into German.

Global waming is the increase of the earth’ s average surface temperature due to the effect of greenhouse gases, for example, carbon dioxide, which traps heat that would otherwise escape from the earth. After the trees are cut down and more greenhouse gases are released, the “blanket’around the earth called the ozone layer(臭氧层), will get thicker. This catches more heat and makes the earth hotter. Luckily, there are many things that every citizen of the earth can do to help reduce the effects of global warming, and it is never too late or too early for children to take action.
The children should learn what a carbon footprint is. A carbon footprint is the amount of carbonand greenhouse gases people make as they lead the daily life and go about the normal activities. In other words, the carbon footprint is a measure of the environmental impact(冲击)the life has. To live an environmentally friendly life that doesn’t contribute to global warming, people want to have the smallest carbon footprint possible.
Almost everything people do contributes to global warming and is related to fossil fuel consumption. These can be direct uses of fossil fuels, like riding in a gasoline-powered car, or indirect contributions to greenhouse gases, such as eating fruits or vegetables that have to be shipped from far away to reach their tables.
If a child wants to make a contribution to reducing global warming, he should ridc a bicycle tothe near park, school, his friend’s house, or anywhere else instead of taking the car. Or he may try to walk or jog, which is also helpful. In addition, although trains and buses often run on fossil fuels, on average, each person uses less energy and produces less polution to run. Next time if children with their parents have to get around town or it’s too far to walk or bike, take the bus or other public transportation instead of asking for a ride.
8.What is the main reason for global warming
A.Too much greenhouse gases being released.
B.The ozone layer having caught more heat.
C.Too many trees having been cut down.
D.The earth’s inner temperature having increased.
9.What is the main idea of Paragraph 2
A.Life has an impact on carbon footprint.
B.The definition of a carbon footprint.
C.People should live an environmental friendly life.
D.People make a huge amount of carbon and greenhouse gases.
10.For whom does the author want to write the passage
A.Scientists. B.Parents.
C.Children educators. D.Adults.
11.What can be a suitable title for the text
A.What Can People Do to Use Less Energy
B.Why Does Global Warming Affects Humans’ Life
C.How Can Kids Help Reduce Global Warming
D.How Does Carbon Footprints Measure Pollution

Robots used to be found only in science fiction. In the 1960s, the animated (动画的) space-age family the Jetsons had a robotic maid who could do household chores. In the 2014 movie Big Hero 6, the robot Baymax could diagnose and heal illnesses instantly. In real life robots function in many manufacturing and household situations. In the field of medicine, robot patients help train doctors and nurses by pretending they have a variety of health conditions. Now robots are finding a home in the food service industry.
The global pandemic and resulting economic crisis have created a lack of restaurant workers. Since restaurants don’t have enough workers, the remaining staff must work harder. Regardless, customers face longer wait times, fewer menu choices and higher prices. Some businessmen are lending a robotic hand in the form of server robots. These robots are not exactly modeled after Rosey, the Jetsons’ robotic household servant, but they are pretty clever.
Server robots come in several different varieties. Many have a design that looks like a rolling cart. One model named Bella even has a cute cat-like face. Many are fairly short and shaped like R2D2 of Star Wars fame. They, designed to deliver dishes, are also just the right height for customers to easily reach them. Restaurant owners are finding server robots ideal for performing repetitive tasks, however many there are. They can not only deliver delicious food to hungry customers, but also fetch back dirty dishes at the end of the meal.
Perhaps you’re wondering about issues such as the cost and safety factors. Concerning the price, a server robot costs from a few thousand to several thousand dollars. And in 2021, a restaurant even rented one for as low as $15 per day. Regarding safety, special sensors on the robots keep them from crashing into customers. Because there aren’t enough restaurant workers, filling positions with these robotic servers is easy. Don’t be surprised if you see one rolling up to your table soon.
12.What’s the purpose of the first paragraph
A.To give some examples. B.To make comparisons.
C.To state the development. D.To introduce the topic.
13.What’s the main reason for the lack of restaurant workers
A.The rise of labor costs. B.The hard work in the restaurant.
C.The influence of the pandemic. D.The drop of food service industry.
14.What can we infer about server robots from paragraph 3
A.Customers will be satisfied with the server robots’ service.
B.A server robot may look like a rolling cart with an ugly face.
C.Server robots are not qualified for doing many repetitive tasks.
D.Server robots will help clean dirty dishes at the end of the meal.
15.What’s the writer’s attitude towards the use of robotic servers
A.Doubtful. B.Positive.
C.Worried. D.Objective.
