Most Famous Libraries in the World
Trinity College Library
Designed by Thomas Burgh, the library is the largest in Ireland. Construction on the Long Room, the library’s 65-meter-long main hall, began in 1712 and lasted 20 years. The original structure only had books on the lower level, but when the library’s shelves were filled in the 1850s, the ceiling was raised to accommodate even more books. Today the Long Room holds 200,000 of the library’s oldest books.
Stuttgart City Library
Opened in 2011, the German library is a splendid light-gray cube consisting of glass blocks designed by Eun Young Yi. Inside it, you’ll find an airy central room, above which sits a multi-story stepped reading room lined with bookshelves. The library towers over the nearby buildings.
Library of Parliament
Taking the form of a Victorian Gothic chapter house complete with 16 flying buttresses, the 1876 Library of Parliament is one of Canada’s prized architectural treasures — it’s on the ten-dollar bill. Architects Thomas Fuller and Chilion Jones took inspiration from the British Museum Reading Room for the structure, lining the central hall with delicate wood shelves and wood carvings.
Rampur Raza Library
Founded in the late 18th century, the Indian library is home to a massive collection of Islamic and Asian texts and objects. The pink structure that houses the collection today was built in 1904 by Nawab Hamid Ali Khan as a mansion of Indo-European style, The Rampur Raza Library was later shifted to this grand building in 1957.

Across the world, humans purchase around 1.3 billion single-use plastic water bottles a day. Because only about 9% of plastic is recycled, the vast majority of those bottles wind up in landfills, the ocean, or elsewhere in nature.
When beach-loving Madison noticed those plastic bottles during her family’s trips to California, the 12-year-old “just felt like this needed to change,” she told Smithsonian Magazine.
So as she began thinking about what to do for her school science fair back in 2021, the idea of a project centered on reducing plastic pollution quickly came to her mind: she would design an eatable water bottle called the Eco-Hero.
“One of my biggest ambitions for my project was wanting to help the world,” the confident young inventor said in a video on the website.
To bring her idea to life, Madison built upon the already established method by experimenting with common food materials. She also took inspiration from previous versions of eatable water bottles, though she focused on making hers bigger and more durable. She found that the combination of water, lemon juice, natural gum, and Alginic acid (褐藻酸) resulted in a gel pouch that wouldn’t break, could hold up to 3/4 cup of water, and would last in the fridge for three weeks.
Though she’d like to improve the Eco-Hero by making it able to hold more water, she believes her current version would work well as a replacement for the paper cups used by runners in races. All one needs to do is bite a hole in the water ball, drink the water, and then eat the pouch or throw it away to biodegrade.
Madison hopes the Eco-Hero inspires others to take better care of the planet. “It doesn’t necessarily have to be in a big way,” she told Smithsonian. “People can still make a difference in the world, even if it’s just in a small way.”
4. What inspired Madison’s design of an eatable water bottle
A. Her school’s task. B. Her family’s urge.
C. Her love for nature. D. Her trips to the beach.
5. What can we know about the Eco-Hero
A It is a copy of the previous versions.
B. It is made from unbreakable materials.
C. It is an improvement in size and durability.
D. It has a hole and should be disposed once used.
6. Which of the following words can best describe Madison
A. Ambitious and creative. B. Talented and determined.
C. Courageous and confident. D. Cooperative and committed.
7. What can be the best title for the text
A. A good beginning is half done. B. Small people make big moves.
C. Where there is a will, there is a way. D. God helps those who help themselves.

These days, more people in Denmark are surviving serious heart attacks. Some of that good news is thanks to a smartphone app called Heartrunner.
Many heart attacks happen when people are not near doctors. The most serious type of heart attack is when the heart stops. In Denmark, the survival rate for people whose heart had stopped when they were not near doctors used to be 4%. In the past 20 years, it has risen to 16%. Denmark has seen a dramatic change in survival from heart attacks after it began recruiting (招募) volunteers and arming some of them with smartphone technology.
Denmark’s emergency number is 112. Call center workers can use Heartrunner to contact up to 20 volunteers within 1.1 miles of an emergency. Workers also send out an ambulance. They often tell the caller how to start CPR. Heartrunner sends an alert (警报) to volunteers. It asks, “Can you run ” If a person says yes, the app sends the address. If there is an AED nearby, the app tells volunteers where to find it.
More than 100,000 people in Denmark volunteer for Heartrunner. About 75% of them are not health care workers. That’s OK, said expert Freddy Lippert. “The patient is dead, and if you don’t do anything, nine out of 10 will be dead forever. The faster CPR begins, the better the chance of restarting the heart. In Denmark, everyday people responded faster than professionals to more than four in 10 heart attacks.”
Erik Kaxe, 81, lives in a small Danish town. Recently, his heart stopped. His wife called 112. The ambulance was sent. And the Heartrunner alert went out. Within minutes, 10 strangers who lived nearby showed up at their house. The ambulance came 17 minutes after the call. So many helpers showed up that they were able to do far more than just CPR. When the ambulance showed up, Kaxe was breathing again. He lived and is now back at home.
“Dying wasn’t difficult” he said. “But waking up is.”
8. What do the numbers mentioned in paragraph 2 show
A. Heartrunner has raised a lot of concern.
B. Heartrunner has made a big difference in Denmark.
C. An increasing number of people have suffered heart attacks.
D. Danish doctors have successfully improved heart attack survival rates.
9. How does Heartrunner work
A. It calls 112 immediately. B. It contacts an ambulance.
C. It sends helpers to victims. D. It sends alerts to AED owners.
10. What can we infer from Freddy Lippert’s words
A. Every minute counts for victims. B. Ambulances respond slowly in Denmark.
C. There is a serious lack of health care workers. D. Volunteers for Heartrunner should be professionals.
11 Why does the author mention Kaxe
A. To tell a touching story. B. To remind us to value life.
C. To show how Heartrunner saves lives. D. To teach us how to use the life-saving app.
D
Does a happy person live longer Many studies have convinced us that happiness brings good health, which has resulted in an increasing demand for speakers and products encouraging positive thinking. However, being happy does not promise that one is going to be healthy. There are other factors that influence one’s health and long life such as a person’s genes or even a person’s socio-economic condition.
Some research even suggests that positive thinking can be dangerous. Positive thinking, when taken to the extreme, can cause a person to be separated from reality. For example, a person who thinks that staying happy and positive can help him recover from an illness like cancer but later fails to recover from it, may blame himself for not being happy. In this case, positive thinking may potentially make the victim disregard other factors. Sometimes the pursuit of happiness is even associated with serious mental health problems such as depression.
All types of happiness are not good for us either. For example, pride, a pleasant feeling, can sometimes rob us of the ability to empathize with others or understand another’s viewpoint. This anti-social behavior can cause people around us to turn away from us, and this could, in turn, make us feel lonely and do harm to our mental and even physical health.
Moreover, unpleasant feelings can be beneficial to a person’s well-being. Researchers believe that unpleasant feelings can help us make sense of our challenges and experiences in a way that supports psychological well-being. For example, if I have behaved badly towards my good friend, the feelings of guilt and sadness might motivate me to apologize and ask for forgiveness. The rebuilding of a broken relationship can be a lift to one’s mental well-being.
In trying to experience happiness, we should remember that seeking for happiness as an end in itself can be self-defeating, and does not necessarily lead to better health. After all, one will surely experience setbacks and conflicts in life. Instead, learning to cope with negative emotions with a realistic positive attitude is key to a person’s good health.
12. What’s the writer’s opinion in this passage
A. Negative thinking can be dangerous.
B. Staying happy can bring good health.
C. Unpleasant feelings cannot be beneficial.
D. Happiness cannot ensure one’s good health.
13. When can positive thinking be dangerous according to the passage
A. When we use it with a realistic attitude to solve problems.
B. When we focus on it as an only determinant of happy life.
C. When we think it one of the necessary factor for good health.
D. When we realize it may rob us of the ability to understand others.
14. How can unpleasant feelings be beneficial to a person’s well-being
A. They rebuild a broken relationship.
B. They lead to self-reflection and personal growth.
C. They help keep the problems and challenges away.
D. They prevent long-term negative effects on mental health.
15. Which of the following has the similar meaning of “an end in itself”
A. An ultimate goal. B. An individual plan.
C. A final decision. D. A great start.

Ten-year-old Sami loved to visit his grandfather’s house. The house was near the beautiful blue sea. At the seaside stood thick and tall palm trees with green coconuts hanging from them. When the coconuts fell down, Sami would break them open and drink the coconut water. It was always great fun to spend the holidays at Grandpa’s place.
This winter vacation, Sami was surprised when he came to his grandfather’s village. There were hardly any trees left. He saw houses built near the sea. People had cut down many palm trees and there was hardly any greenery left.
Grandpa’s house was different. He never allowed his trees to be cut. He hugged each palm tree in his courtyard. He also named the two big trees near the front door—one was Petu, and the other Betu. They were tall and green and gave the sweetest, juiciest coconuts.
One night, Sami was awakened by a strange sound. He could not sleep. He tossed and turned (辗转反侧) in bed. Suddenly, the ground shook as if the earth was splitting. He sat up straight and then ran to Grandpa. He clung to (抓紧) his grandpa tightly. Grandpa cried out, “It’s an earthquake!” They ran outside the house.
Suddenly, there was a loud sound; the earth was not splitting but the sea was roaring. People were shouting, screaming and crying, “The sea is rising!” The villagers started running away from the beach. Sami watched with fear.
The waves were rising higher and higher. Sami thought, “How big the waves are!” He went into the house again and saw water coming in from all sides. He was scared.
Sami remembered his mother telling him long ago, “You must always get out of the house if the floods come too near.” He ran outside the house with Grandpa. But the water came surging (汹涌) in.
Waves about twelve meters high came rushing in, drowning everything. Water was all around and everywhere.

A. It is a copy of the previous versions.
【答案】4. D 5. C 6. A 7. B

【导语】本文是一篇记叙文,主要讲述了12岁的女孩Madison为了解决塑料瓶污染的问题,发明了可食用的水瓶。
【4题详解】
细节理解题。根据第二段“When beach-loving Madison noticed those plastic bottles during her family’s trips to California, the 12-year-old ‘just felt like this needed to change,’ she told Smithsonian Magazine.(当热爱海滩的Madison在加利福尼亚的家庭旅行中注意到这些塑料瓶时,这位12岁的女孩‘觉得这需要改变’,她告诉《史密森尼杂志》)”可知,Madison在加利福尼亚的家庭旅行中发现海滩上有塑料瓶,这让她产生了设计可食用水瓶的想法。故选D。
【5题详解】
细节理解题。根据第五段中的“She also took inspiration from previous versions of eatable water bottles, though she focused on making hers bigger and more durable.(她还从以前的可食水瓶中获得了灵感,不过她专注于让自己的水瓶更大、更耐用)”可知,她设计的水瓶在体积和耐用性上有了改善。故选C。
【6题详解】
推理判断题。根据第五段中的“To bring her idea to life, Madison built upon the already established method by experimenting with common food materials. She also took inspiration from previous versions of eatable water bottles, though she focused on making hers bigger and more durable.(为了将她的想法付诸实践,Madison在已经建立的方法的基础上,对常见的食物材料进行了实验。她还从以前的可食水瓶中获得了灵感,不过她专注于让自己的水瓶更大、更耐用)”可推测出,Madison根据已经建立的方法和从以前的可食用水瓶中获得的灵感,通过实验设计出了更大、更耐用的水瓶,由此可推测出,她是一个有创造力的(creative)人。根据第四段“‘One of my biggest ambitions for my project was wanting to help the world,’ the confident young inventor said in a video on the website.(这位自信的年轻发明家在网站上的一段视频中说:‘我对这个项目最大的抱负之一是想帮助世界。’)”可知,她有帮助世界的抱负,由此可推测出,她是一个有抱负的(ambitious)人。故选A。
【7题详解】
主旨大意题。通读全文,尤其是最后一段中Madison的话“It doesn’t necessarily have to be in a big way(这不一定要很大)”和“People can still make a difference in the world, even if it’s just in a small way.(人们仍然可以在世界上有所作为,即使只是在很小的方面)”可知,年仅12岁的女孩Madison设计出了可食用的水瓶,用自己的方式帮助保护环境,她认为人们不一定要做出非常大的成就,小事情也能有重要影响,所以B项“小人物也能有大成就”适合作本文标题。故选B。

11. Why does the author mention Kaxe
A. To tell a touching story. B. To remind us to value life.
C. To show how Heartrunner saves lives. D. To teach us how to use the life-saving app.
【答案】8. B 9. C 10. A 11. C

If there is an AED nearby, the app tells volunteers where to find it.(呼叫中心的工作人员可以使用Heartrunner在距离紧急情况1.1英里的范围内联系最多20名志愿者。
根据倒数第三段“The patient is dead, and if you don’t do anything, nine out of 10 will be dead forever. The faster CPR begins, the better the chance of restarting the heart.(病人已经死亡,如果你什么都不做,十有八九会永远死去。心肺复苏开始得越快,重启心脏的机会就越大)”可推知,对受害者来说,每一分钟都很重要。故选A。
【11题详解】
推理判断题。根据倒数第二段“Recently, his heart stopped. His wife called 112. The ambulance was sent. And the Heartrunner alert went out. Within minutes, 10 strangers who lived nearby showed up at their house.
【答案】12. D 13. B 14. B 15. A

After all, one will surely experience setbacks and conflicts in life. Instead, learning to cope with negative emotions with a realistic positive attitude is key to a person’s good health.”(在尝试体验快乐的过程中,我们应该记住,把追求快乐作为an end in itself可能会弄巧成拙,也不一定会带来更好的健康。 故选A。

【答案】参考范文
Grandpa held Sami’s hand tightly but a huge wave separated them. Grandpa fought the waves and tried to catch Sami, but failed. Sami was drifted away! Sami struggled to keep his head above the water. The water pushed him ahead. Fortunately, he caught Petu in Grandpa’s courtyard. He climbed up it and saw his Grandpa struggling near Betu in the violent water. He screamed out to Grandpa to encourage him to approach Betu, but the water was so wild that it was difficult for the old man to reach Betu. An idea occurred to Sami. He quickly broke off a branch of Petu and stuck it to Grandpa. With the help of the branch, he pulled Grandpa up the tree.
Now they were up in Petu. Another wave came with terrifying speed and force, but they were safe thanks to the tree. They hugged each other, tears welling up in their eyes. They stayed there comforting each other, waiting the disaster to go away. After what seemed a long time, it was calm. Both Grandpa and Sami came down the tree and they hugged the tree with tears of gratitude. But for Petu, there would not be alive now. They knew Petu and Betu were part of their life.
