School Activities for Strengthening Hard-working Spirit
With the aim of boosting students’ hard-working spirit, a range of educational activities were held in our school last
week.
Students took an active part in a variety of carefully planned petitions were organized last Monday to
test students’ basic living skills, such as housekeeping, basic sewing, and simple cooking. Besides, a spring outing was
arranged last Friday, allowing students to prepare meals on their own. Moreover, students were encouraged to help their
parents with housework during the weekends.
As far as I’m concerned, these activities are extremely meaningful. Not only did we learn to respect and honour
hard work, but we also developed a sense of responsibility. It was so wonderful to be engaged!

Man: I have been working with clay for around 10 years when I went to a workshop at Idlewild, a couple of women told
me about an after school program. I thought, wouldn't it be fun to give what I know to kids, but no one would give me a
job. I don't have a degree or any certificate. The women suggested I bring in the neighborhood kids. I went home and
opened my studio to the neighborhood. That's how my program started. I always tell kids they can create anything they
want. When they come up with an incredible idea. My assistant and I will figure out a way for them to realize it.
Woman: Your devotion and passion are truly remarkable. Kevin, thank you for sharing your inspiring journey with us.
Text 10 (18-20)
Albert Bierstadt was born on January 7, 1830, in Prussia, Germany. His family moved to New Bedford Mass the US
when Albert was just one year old. Little is known about his early life, but his skill at drawing led him to become an art
teacher at age 20. Then in 1853, he went to Germany, studying with experienced artists and drawing across Germany,
Switzerland and Italy for four years. He grew up as an artist. Once back in New Bedford, he began to exhibit his
European works, gaining recognition for his use of light and color that produced peaceful and gentle landscapes. For the
next several decades, Albert took his place as one of the nation's most honored landscape artists. His paintings of tropical
environments are generally considered to be of equal quality to his paintings of the American West. In his later years, he
spent part of every year in the Bahamas, where his wife had moved for medical reasons.

If you’ve reached the end of the year feeling as though you didn’t read enough, we’ve got you. Here are some of the
best books of the year according to notable artists, image-makers and other cultural taste makers.
Emily Ratajkowski, model: “Ghost Lover”
“This collection of nine short stories probes into many of the same themes in Lisa Taddeo’s beloved ‘Three Women’,
but discusses them in a sharper, more disagreeable way. She ruthlessly explores jealousy relationships between women,
aging, revenge and, of course, desire. Taddeo never lets you come up for air – making you laugh while simultaneously
horrifying you all when you least expect it.”
Hans Ulrich Obrist, artistic director: “I Always Knew”
“This is a portrait of artist and writer Barbara Chase-Riboud, through the letters she wrote to her mother, Vivian
Mae, between 1957 and 1991. In this remarkable title, Barbara Chase-Riboud tells her mother about her development as
an artist, her love stories, and her trips around the globe, from Africa to China. In these memoirs (回忆录),
Chase-Riboud frankly and passionately describes her aspirations, ambitions and creative inspiration, while also
showcasing love and tenderness to her mother.”
Avan Jogia, actor and director: “Who is Wellness For ”
“‘Who is Wellness For ’ is a book that works as part social observation and part memoir. It explores the
commercialization of healing and ritual and asks questions about the industry of wellness. I found the read insightful,
thoughtful, and unafraid. Wellness isn’t for anyone if it’s not for everyone.”
21. What sets “Ghost Lover” apart from “Three Women”
A. The focus on themes. B. The setting of stories.
C. The structure of books. D. The tone of narration.
22. Who is the writer of “I Always Knew”
A. Barbara Chase-Riboud. B. Hans Ulrich Obrist.
C. Vivian Mae. D. Avan Jogia.
23. What do the above-mentioned books have in common
A. They bring laughter to readers. B. They share the same writing type.
C. They center on the theme of love. D. They stand out as the best reads of the year.
B
I was 68 when I first stepped on stage as a standup comedian in 2003. I’d never set foot in a comedy club before.
I’ve always been a performer – I’ve worked as a singer, actor and musician – but all that came to an end after 9/11. I live
in New York, and we watched the twin towers fall from my apartment building. For a year afterwards, nobody wanted to
go out or be entertained.
It was then that I started to think about comedy. I realised people needed to laugh, to enjoy themselves again, and
thought that with a little training, I could do it. I took a few classes, tried to work out a routine, and finally plucked up the
courage to get up on stage. That first time was terrifying. I had no idea what the audience would make of me.
In New York, comedians are typically young men with beards. It’s hard enough to break through as a woman, even
harder as someone old enough to be their grandmother. As I stepped on stage that first time, people laughed nervously.
They were clearly surprised to see me. I introduced myself, stated my age and tried my first joke. There was silence. But
by the time I got to the third line, people were properly laughing, and I was addicted.
3
{#{QQABIQCAogCoAJJAARhCEQEwCACQkBGCCKoGxAAIIAABiBNABAA=}#}
Now my sets differ. I might be on stage for 10 minutes in front of a dozen people, or my one-woman show is a full
hour in front of a crowd of 100. Even today, I’m nervous before I step out. My first line is, “Hello, everybody. I’m 88
and three-quarters years old. I’m telling you that in case I don’t make it all the way through the show.” Then people
laugh and I relax.
After a show, people young and old come up to me, saying what an inspiration I am. They say they want to be as
active as me when they reach my age. I’m pleased I can show that as an older person, you don’t need to take a back seat
in life.
I’ve no intention of stopping comedy. I’m taking all these pills, trying to stay alive, and I hope to still be performing
when I’m 100. My goal is to still be up there making people laugh. It’s hard work, but it stops me being bored. I’d only
be playing golf otherwise.
24. What made the writer take up comedy
A. She wanted to overcome her fears. B. She wanted to brighten others’ lives.
C. She was unwilling to quit performing. D. She wanted to work out a routine.
25. Why does the writer mention young men with beards in Paragraph 3
A. To show the challenge she was facing.
B. To explain her attraction to the job.
C. To illustrate her special advantage.
D. To describe her new friends in comedy.
26. How has the writer made progress since her first performance
A. She now performs before larger audiences.
B. She no longer feels nervous before performances.
C. She remains on the stage for a longer time.
D. She has learned to make a joke of her age.
27. Which of the following statements would the writer agree with
A. Age is just a number.
B. Advancing years bring greater wisdom.
C. Age wrinkles the body as well as the soul.
D. A restful old age is the reward of a well-spent youth.
C
Schools need to give students all the tools they need when they graduate. Besides teaching the basics of reading,
writing, and arithmetic, teaching about mindfulness, and mental health are important life skills for young people to have.
The state of Florida agrees.
Now, public schools in Florida have been required to teach five or more hours about mental health for students in
grades 6-12. This new idea was welcomed by the Florida Board of Education in July and is being carried out as a
potential lifesaver.
The new curriculum requires students to learn about the symptoms (症状) of mental illness and where to find help if
they are feeling sad or have other problems and even teaches the teenagers how to help their friends and classmates if
they see them struggling.
“We know that 50 percent of all mental illness cases begin by age 14, so we are being active in our commitment to
4
{#{QQABIQCAogCoAJJAARhCEQEwCACQkBGCCKoGxAAIIAABiBNABAA=}#}
provide our kids with the necessary tools to see them through their successes and challenges. Providing mental health
instruction is another important step forward in supporting our families,” Education Commissioner Richard Corcoran
said.
Florida is the third state, following New York and Virginia in 2020, to pass laws that require mental health
education in schools. According to CNN, the New York law updated the health curriculum to include mental health for
elementary, middle and high school students. The Virginia law required that mental health education be provided for 9th
and 10th graders.
These three states in the US are taking bold steps to help youth deal with the intricacy of life as they grow from
teenagers into adults. It is a confusing world they face and giving them the tools they need is essential. Mental health is
something that should be taught in schools in all the US and across the globe.
28. What can the new curriculum bring students
A. Basic professional skills. B. The ability to use language.
C. Emotional handling skills. D. Skills that cure physical diseases.
29. What does Richard Corcoran intend to stress in Paragraph 4
A. The steps of mental health instruction. B. The consequences of mental illness cases.
C. The importance of mental health education. D. The content of the mental health curriculum.
30. What does the underlined word “intricacy” mean in Paragraph 6
A. Complexity. B. Process. C. Trick. D. Balance.
31. Where is the text probably taken from
A. A technology report. B. An educational website.
C. A government document. D. A natural science magazine.
D
Microplastics are everywhere in our environment. It’s hardly surprising that the tiny fragments have also been found
in the human body. A new study shows that Americans are consuming as many as 121,000 particles each year.
Measuring 50 to 500 microns in length, microplastics come from a variety of sources, including large plastics that
break down into smaller and smaller pieces. Therefore, much remains unknown about the common existence of these
materials within the human body, as well as the impact on human health.
Hoping to fill in some of these gaps, a research team, led by Kieran Cox, a Ph.D. candidate at the University of
Victoria, looked at 26 papers assessing the number of microplastics in commonly consumed food items, among which
are seafood, sugar, salt, honey, alcohol and water. The team also evaluated the potential consumption of microplastics
through inhalation (吸入) using previously reported data on microplastic concentrations in the air and the Environmental
Protection Agency’s data on respiration rates. Based on these data, the researchers calculated that our annual
consumption of microplastics via foods and drinks ranges from 39,000 to 52,000 particles. When microplastics taken in
through inhalation are taken into account, the range jumps to between 74,000 and 121,000 particles per year.
The authors of the study found that people who drink exclusively from plastic water bottles absorb additional
90,000 microplastics each year, compared with 4,000 among those who only consume tap water. “This shows that small
decisions, over the course of a year, really matter and have an impact.” Cox says. The new study, according to its authors,
was the first to investigate “the accumulative human exposure to microplastics”. But in all likelihood, the research tells
only a small part of the entire story. Collectively, the foods and drinks that the researchers analyzed represent 15 percent
5
{#{QQABIQCAogCoAJJAARhCEQEwCACQkBGCCKoGxAAIIAABiBNABAA=}#}
of Americans’ caloric intake. The team could not account for food groups like fruits, vegetables and grain because there
simply is not enough data on their microplastic content.
For those worried about microplastic consumption, cutting down bottled water is a good place to start. But for the
heart of the problem, we have to stop producing and using so many plastics.
32. What makes it difficult to know microplastics commonly exist in the human body
A. The quality of microplastics. B. The quantity of microplastics.
C. The size of microplastics. D. The shape of microplastics.
33. How did Kieran Cox’s team calculate the potential consumption of microplastics
A. By analyzing existing data. B. By comparing the impact.
C. By studying papers. D. By conducting experiments.
34. What can we know according to the text
A. Bottled water is the largest source of microplastics intake.
B. More information on human consumption of microplastics is needed.
C. People consume 74,000 to 121, 000 particles per year through inhalation.
D. The study is one of the earliest to investigate human exposure to microplastics.
35. What is the best title for the text
A. The Potential Problems of Microplastics.
B. Microplastics Found Within Human Bodies.
C. Microplastics Coming from Various Sources.
D. The Impact of Microplastics on Human Health.

Most of us assume those hyper-achievers who are always able to squeeze in their workout, eat healthy foods and
pick their kids up on time must have superhuman self-control. But science points to a different answer: 36 The
only catch is that building good habits takes effort and insight. Thankfully, here are a few research-backed steps that can
set you on the path to where you want to be.
1. Set a specific goal
The way you define the goal you hope to turn into a habit does matter. Goals like “meditate regularly” are too
abstract, research has shown. 37 Don’t say “I’ll meditate regularly. Say, “I’ll meditate for 15 minutes each day.”
This is actually key to habit formation, making the task easy to carry out, but it’s often overlooked.
2. Create a detailed, cue-based plan
38 Scientists have proven that you’ll make more progress toward your goal if you decide not just what you’ll
do, but when and where you’ll be cued to do it. Making this kind of plan reduces the chances you’ll forget to follow
through because the when and where in your plan will serve as cues to action. A plan like “I’ll study Spanish for 30
minutes every weekday” is OK. But a detailed, cue-based plan like “Every workday after my last meeting, I’ll spend 30
minutes studying Spanish in my office” is more likely to stick as a habit.
3. 39
We’re strongly influenced by the behaviours of the people around us, evidence shows. Want to start running
regularly You’re probably better off joining an established running club than asking a few friends who aren’t yet in the
6
{#{QQABIQCAogCoAJJAARhCEQEwCACQkBGCCKoGxAAIIAABiBNABAA=}#}
habit of jogging to get in shape with you. However, it’s important not to get too crazy—if you try to train with
marathoners when you’re just hoping to work up to a 5K, it can be discouraging.
4. Make it fun to repeat
Research has shown you’ll persist longer and ultimately achieve more if you focus on finding ways to make goal
pursuit fun. One excellent way is to try “temptation bundling”. Research shows that temptation bundling improves
follow-through; it transforms goal pursuit into a source of pleasure, not pain. 40
A. Find the right kind of social support.
B. Tell your friends and family about your goals.
C. What we mistake for willpower is often a natural outcome of habit.
D. You’ll benefit from being more specific about what exactly you aim to do and how often.
E. Having a bite-size objective makes it less daunting to get started and easier to see your progress.
F. Now you have established a specific goal, it’s time to think about what will cue you to follow through.
G. For example, watch your favorite show while at the gym or enjoy a beloved podcast while cooking
healthy meals.

When Zhou Longshan started filming birds 10 years ago at Baiyangdian Lake, 56 major wetland in
northern China, he just wanted to record his favorite species – egrets (白鹭).
Then things snowballed. In the following years, the teacher became a bird watcher, a volunteer ranger at the lake, a
photographer 57 (document) over 110 bird species, and an 58 (education) popularizing bird-related
knowledge among students.
“Sharing bird-protection knowledge with children can make them feel the 59 (beautiful) of their hometown
and the importance of birds, and help them cultivate the habit of protecting birds from an early age,” he said.
Growing up in a local village, Zhou, 60, has fond childhood memories 60 (associate) with the wetland.
“When I was a child, the water in Baiyangdian was limpid. The fish and aquatic plants in the water could be seen
clearly,” he said. “I often caught fish with my friends, rowed boats and drank the lake water 61 I was thirsty.”
Between the 1960s and 1980s, 62 , Baiyangdian suffered severely from industrial pollution. Chemicals
poisoned the water and lake beds, decimating the aquatic life. In the 1990s, the lake 63 (near) dried up due to
climate change.
When Zhou became a teacher in the 1990s, the stink from the lake could sometimes be smelled from his village.
“The lake became stinking, the population and species of fish and birds decreased, and the locals were unwilling to go
near the lake,” he recalled.
Since the Xiong’ an New Area was established in 2017, Baiyangdian’s rehabilitation and protection activities
