Appreciation
Read the sample, underline the echoes and mark the foreshadowing beside.
Every summer, we would visit Mr. Donovan and talk to him. We shared interesting stories at school with him rapturously, and he treated us his ripe and juicy fruits. As we knew him deeply, out of nowhere disappeared the mean old man. Never had we anticipated that we were so stupid that we misunderstood him for many days and missed such a hidden treasure. But one summer, when we went to visit him, the porch was empty and the fruit trees were withered. Slowly out from behind the door came Mr. Donovan, whose voice was even huskier than before, like sandpaper grinding a table. To our shock, only after 10 minutes’ talking did Mr. Donovan show his tiredness. we hoped that he would recover soon but things didn’t go as we expected.
The next winter, word got around that Old Man Donovan had died. A sense of grief overwhelming us, my sister and I couldn’t believe it until we went to his house and saw his smiling face on the wall. I felt a lump in my throat, tears streaming down our cheeks. We edged out of his house and stared at the deserted porch and bare fruit trees with the old man’s gruff voice echoing in our ears. But gone were the days when we sat together chatting with each other. And gone were the days when we were lucky enough to have a taste of the luscious fruit grown by him. However, he left us a lesson: never judge a person from rumors, or you may miss his hidden treasures.
