In 1943, when I was 4, my parents moved from Coeur d’Alene, Idaho, to Fairbanks, Alaska, where adventure was never very far away.
We arrived in the summer, just in time to enjoy the midnight sun. All that sunlight was fantastic for Mom’s vegetable garden. Working in the garden at midnight tended to throw her timing off, so she didn’t care much about my bedtime.
Dad was a Railway Express agent and Mom was his clerk. That left me in a mess. I usually managed to find some trouble to get into. Once I had a little fire going in the dirt basement of a hotel. I had tried to light a barrel(桶) of paint but couldn’t really get a good fire going. The smoke got pretty bad, though, and when 1 made my exit, a crowd and the police were there to greet me. The policemen took my matches and drove me home.
Mom and Dad were occupied in the garden and Dad told the police to keep me, and they did! I had a tour of the prison before Mom rescued me. I hadn’t turned 5 yet.
As I entered kindergarten, the serious cold began to set in. Would it surprise you to know that I soon left part of my tongue on a metal handrail at school

Walking through an airport is never easy. Now imagine doing it if you were blind. That’s the problem faced by Chieko Asakawa, a computer scientist and IBM researcher. Asakawa often flies between the US and Japan, making the journey monthly. If traveling alone she has to be helped at both ends of the flight, which sometimes includes endless waiting. Searching for a better replacement led Asakawa to invent a high-tech suitcase that helps get her to the place she wants to go safely.
“I never relax when I travel alone,” she says, “I always think about what technology will help me travel more easily, quickly and comfortably.” It was this restlessness that led to the AI suitcase.
The idea has been in development since 2017 through research between IBM, other Japanese companies, and Carnegie Mellon University in Pennsylvania. Asakawa says there are hopes to commercialize the suitcase and a pilot scheme (试验计划) is planned to use it in an airport, a shopping mall and other public spaces. “Though the suitcase is too full of tech to hold any clothes, that could change in the future,” she says.
A runner, Asakawa, held Olympic dreams as a child, but a swimming accident at the age of 11 caused her to gradually lose her sight until, aged 14, she became totally blind. As a grown-up she has paid attention to developing accessibility technology. Among her creations is “aDesigner”, whose aim is to make designers’ websites more user-friendly, and “IBM Home Page Reader”, the first voice browser to allow Internet access for blind people. Asakawa has won industry and government awards and been introduced into the US National Inventors Hall of Fame.
“The blind people usually use a white cane (手杖) or a guide dog. It will open up many doors for blind people, because we’d be able to go anywhere by ourselves. Without new technology, we cannot make our society more inclusive (包容的),” Asakawa says. “A smart suitcase is a great showcase for how AI and technology can change the lives of the blind.”
28. What drove Asakawa to invent the suitcase
A. The suggestion from an international airport.
B. The wish to finish her trip without any help.
C. The huge business advantages of the suitcase.
D. The experience of keeping the blind company.
29. What do we learn about the suitcase
A. It can hold clothes. B. It has yet to be widely used.
C. It has proved unhelpful for the blind. D. It is ready to be commercially produced.
30. What does Asakawa think of the suitcase
A. It will encourage more scientists to help the blind.
B. It will make the public care for the blind more.
C. It will hugely free up the blind’s movements.
D. It will change people’s way of traveling.
31. What is the best title for this text
A. Technology Is Changing People’s Lives
B. A Robot Suitcase Makes Traveling Popular
C. Traveling Alone Requires Courage for the Blind
D. A Smart Suitcase Is to Replace Cane for the Blind
D
Have you ever walked into a room and completely forgotten why you came into it in the first place I couldn’t agree more when I read an article from Live Science that stated, “There are several types of memories, and the brain has a unique way of forgetting each kind.” Memory does some funny things. While forgetting is a normal and vital part of our brain function, we have to admit that memory can be a mysterious and naughty joker. One of the most common mysteries is a short-term memory failure where people find themselves entering a room with no memory of why they did so.
Everyone has experienced this at least once in their lives. We call it a “senior moment”, but researchers say it’s actually okay to put the blame on our doorways and not on our ageing brains. The act of walking through a doorway sends a signal to our brains that a new scene has started and that previous memories should be put away. This is what causes our memory failure and confusion. The thoughts we had before we entered that new scene have actually been sectionalized (分区). In an interview with Live Science Gabriel Radvansky, a psychologist at the University of Norte Dame said, “Entering or exiting through a doorway serves as an ‘event boundary’ in the mind.”
I find this amazing, as I watch it happen to people all around me every day. I guess I should stop telling them they’re getting old and actually explain the cause. For me it’s not doorways that cause a problem. It’s flights of stairs. Every so often I find myself going up the stairs and forgetting why I did so just as soon as I’ve reached the landing. What’s up with that Now if I can only find out what that means, I’d be truly fascinated.
32. What contributes to our “senior moment” according to the researchers
A. Ageing brains. B. Doorways. C. Different moments. D. The same scenes.
33. Which of the following is Radvansky likely to agree with
A. Walking through a doorway makes us nervous in the mind.
B. Sectionalized thoughts disappear when we enter a new scene.
C. Too many events in life are harmful to our brain memory.
D. Exiting through doorways causes short memory failures.
34. What may confuse the author
A. Whether he should explain the cause to others.
B. How much he was fascinated by science.
C How many people suffer from doorway problems.
D. Why going up the stairs makes him forgetful.
35. What’s the main idea of the text
A. Short memory failures do have scientific reasons.
B. Our brain has several types of memories.
C. Everyone has a unique way of forgetting things.
D. Psychology theories can help us improve memories.

What Your Dog Is Really Thinking
Reading a pup’s body language requires experience and expert guidance. Zazie Todd, a dog trainer and founder of the blog Companion Animal Psychology, considers how to figure out the dogs’ behaviour.
If your dog licks their mouth
They’re stressed. Recently, two European studies have highlighted the meaning of this licking. One found that it was a dogs’ response to seeing an angry or aggressive human face on a computer screen. ___36___ . If you spot this sign, try reducing your dog’s stress levels. It could be as simple as giving them more physical space.
If there are fireworks and your dog is shaking
The noises are frightening. ___37___ . But a surprising number of people don’t realize that shaking and trembling (and hiding or seeking out people) are signs of fear. Whereas only a quarter of owners say their dog is afraid of loud noises, half report these behavioural signs.
___38___
They’re anxious. Obvious signs of an unhappy dog include hiding or trying to leave the exam room, but commonly missed signs range from a tucked tail and lowered ears to trembling. If your dog gets stressed at appointments, ask what can be done. Many vets now use food to make the experience more fun.
If your dog leans into you during a petting session.
___39___ . If you’re unsure that a dog is enjoying being petted, stop, then watch their reaction. If they choose to wander of, the session is over. Other signs of discomfort include smelling the floor, looking away and breathing heavily. However, if they lean on you or scratch at you to get more hugs, continue! ___40___ .
A. They hate it
B. They like it
C. This is a common reaction
D. If you’re at the vet and your dog’s tail is down
E. If your dog looks guilty when you walk in the door and see a mess
F. Preferred spots on their bodies are to either side of the chest and under the chin
G. The other determined that dogs lick their mouths—and also look away—in response to a mild threat

A Vacation with My Mother
I had an interesting childhood. It was filled with surprises and amusements, all because of my mother---loving, sweet, yet absent-minded and forgetful. One strange family trip we took when I was eleven tells a lot about her.
My two sets of grandparents lived in Colorado and North Dakota and my parents decided to spend a few weeks driving to those states and seeing all the sights along the way. As the first day of our trip approached, David, my eight-year-old brother, and I unwillingly said good-bye to all of our friends. Who knew if we’d ever see them again Finally, the moment of our departure arrived, and we loaded suitcases, books, games, camping equipment, and a tent into the car and bravely drove off. We bravely drove off again two hours later after we’d returned home to get the purse and traveler’s checks Mom had forgotten.
David and I were always a little nervous when using gas station bathrooms if Mom was driving while Dad slept: “You stand outside the door and play lookout(放哨) while I go, and I’ll stand outside the door and play lookout while you go.” I had terrible pictures in my mind: “Honey, where are the kids ” “What ! Oh, Gosh…I thought they were being awfully quiet.” We were never actually left behind in a strange city, but we weren’t about to take any chances.
On the fourth or fifth night, we had trouble finding a hotel with a vacancy. After driving in vain for some time, Mom suddenly got a great idea: Why didn’t we find a house with a likely-looking backyard and ask if we could set up tent there David and I became nervous. To our great relief, Dad turned down the idea. Mom never could understand our objections(反对). If a strange family showed up on her front doorstep, Mom would have been delighted. She thinks everyone in the world is as nice as she is. We finally found a vacancy in the next town.

We call it a “senior moment” but researchers say it’s actually okay to put the blame on our doorways and not on our ageing brains.
C. How many people suffer from doorway problems.
D. Why going up the stairs makes him forgetful.
35. What’s the main idea of the text
A. Short memory failures do have scientific reasons.
B. Our brain has several types of memories.
C. Everyone has a unique way of forgetting things.
D. Psychology theories can help us improve memories.
B 33. D 34. D 35. A
根据第二段“We call it a “senior moment”, but researchers say it’s actually okay to put the blame on our doorways and not on our ageing brains.(我们称呼它为“老痴瞬间”,但是研究者们说,实际上,我们把它归结于我们的门口而不是我们老去的大脑是可以的)”可知,作者认为我们有“老痴瞬间”的原因在于我们的门口。
根据第二段“Entering or exiting through a doorway serves as an ‘event boundary’ in the mind. (穿过门口进出的时候是作为大脑的“边界事件”服务的)”可知,在Gabriel Radvansky看来,从门口出来的时候会出现短暂的失忆。故选D。
【34题详解】
细节理解题。根据最后一段“For me it’s not doorways that cause a problem. It’s flights of stairs. (对我来说,不是门口的问题,而是楼梯的问题)”可知,让作者困惑的是别人是进出门口的时候会暂时失忆,而他是上楼梯时会暂时失忆。故选D。
【35题详解】
主旨大意题。根据文章第一段“Have you ever walked into a room and completely forgotten why you came into it in the first place I couldn’t agree more when I read an article from Live Science(你有没有过走进一间房间并且完全忘记你为什么进去?当我在生命科学网站上读到一篇文章时,我非常同意它的观点)”可知,本文所提到的人会短暂的失忆这件事是有科学解释的。故选A。
G 37. C 38. D 39. B 40. F
根据上文“They’re stressed. Recently, two European studies have highlighted the meaning of this licking. One found that it was a dogs’ response to seeing an angry or aggressive human face on a computer screen.”(他们紧张。 The other determined that dogs lick their mouths—and also look away—in response to a mild threat.(另一项研究确定,狗在受到轻微威胁时,会舔自己的嘴,同时也会把目光移开。)
根据上文“The noises are frightening.”(噪音太吓人了。)以及下文“But a surprising number of people don’t realize that shaking and trembling (and hiding or seeking out people) are signs of fear. Whereas only a quarter of owners say their dog is afraid of loud noises, half report these behavioural signs.”(但令人惊讶的是,很多人没有意识到颤抖和颤抖(以及躲起来或寻找别人)是恐惧的表现。 This is a common reaction.(这是一种常见的反应。)
该段下文“They’re anxious. Obvious signs of an unhappy dog include hiding or trying to leave the exam room, but commonly missed signs range from a tucked tail and lowered ears to trembling. If your dog gets stressed at appointments, ask what can be done. Many vets now use food to make the experience more fun.”(他们焦虑。 If you’re at the vet and your dog’s tail is down(如果你在兽医那里,你的狗的尾巴是下垂的。)意思一致,为总结该段内容,选项中的tail is down对应下文中的a tucked tail。故选D项。
根据下文“If you’re unsure that a dog is enjoying being petted, stop, then watch their reaction. If they choose to wander of, the session is over. Other signs of discomfort include smelling the floor, looking away and breathing heavily. However, if they lean on you or scratch at you to get more hugs, continue!”(如果你不确定狗狗是否喜欢被抚摸,停下来,然后观察它们的反应。 结合选项B项They like it.(它们喜欢。)
根据上文“However, if they lean on you or scratch at you to get more hugs, continue!”(然而,如果它们靠在你身上或抓你来得到更多的拥抱,继续!) Preferred spots on their bodies are to either side of the chest and under the chin.(它们身体上的首选位置是胸部两侧和下巴下方。)

A Vacation with My Mother
I had an interesting childhood. It was filled with surprises and amusements, all because of my mother---loving, sweet, yet absent-minded and forgetful. One strange family trip we took when I was eleven tells a lot about her.
My two sets of grandparents lived in Colorado and North Dakota, and my parents decided to spend a few weeks driving to those states and seeing all the sights along the way.

Paragraph 1:
The next day we remembered the brand-new tent we had brought with us. ______________
Paragraph 2:
We drove through several states and saw lots of great sights along the way. ______________
The next day we remembered the brand-new tent we had brought with us. Thinking of this tent, Mom suggested that we go camping in the next village in excitement, with her eyes glittering. Considering her enthusiasm, we all agreed. When the door of our car opened, Mom stormed out instantly and urged us to put up the tent. David and I were asked to pick up some branches to build a fire. And when we came back, Dad and Mom had already lain down the grass comfortably in front of the tent, talking merrily with a local boy at our age, who kept glancing at this tent curiously. Soon we learnt that the boy in rags even didn’t have a home to live in. Of course, Mom “forgot” to take this tent with us again.
We drove through several states and saw lots of great sights along the way. And we also had a nice time living with my grandparents during that trip. But what impressed me most was that tent, which was forgotten deliberately by Mom. Though she did love going camping, she presented that poor boy with this tent out of sympathy. It was Mom that made my childhood colorful. And it was also she that showed me the true meaning of giving.
【详解】首先,根据文章当中第二段内容比较开心的基调,第一段的故事情节应该比较偏向正面感彩,例如:我们在露营过程中一起搭建帐篷的开心时光或露营过程中的趣事(尤其是前文有铺垫妈妈是个forgetful的人,这一点也可以埋下伏笔来表达后面过程中由于妈妈健忘而带来的趣事)(也有同学在此处描述了露营过程中对其他陌生人提供帮助,来集中体现nice这一个点);
其次,第二段开头说来描述欣赏风景: 此处可以用一些描述景色环境的表达来烘托下氛围,但是第二段不能仅仅只能有景色描述;例如:这里可以实写和虚写结合的方式,看到景色(同时回忆往事),最终把故事的落脚点放在“家人的感情”“亲情”“生活的乐趣”“与妈妈一起的趣事”等等角度都可以的;当然也有同学描述与陌生人的相遇,引出了陌生人的善意这个主题;总之这次的话题比较开放,情节可以写的角度比较多;
Mom suggested that we go camping in the next village in excitement, with her eyes glittering. Considering her enthusiasm, we all agreed. what引导的主语从句和which引导的非限制性定语从句But what impressed me most was that tent, which was forgotten deliberately by Mom.
