Understanding cultural body language in other countries is very helpful in communication, especially when we can’t speak a foreign language. Here are some gestures and their meanings in different cultures. I hope these will help you when you try to interact with foreigners.
Eye contacts
Some countries, such as Japan and Finland, consider constant eye contact awkward. In Caribbean cultures, children and teenagers are taught not to look at adults in the eyes when they are being corrected. Strong eye contact is common among people of the same sex in Spain and Arabic countries.
Hands
The ‘thumbs up” sign is used in many cultures to mean “OK”. In France, it can mean No. 1, but it is very rude in Islamic countries, Cerdena and Greece. Interestingly, the “OK” sign means “zero” or “nothing” in France, while some other European countries such as Greece, Italy, Brazil, and Russia consider it as impolite.
Greetings and goodbyes
Shaking hands is a normal and formal way to greet or say goodbye in western countries. But in Romania, only men usually shake hands. And they do it ever) time they meet, not just the first! in England, however, it’s unusual to shake hands with someone you are introduced to in an informal setting.
Legs
Sitting with crossed legs is common in North America and European countries, but it is considered disrespectful in Asia and the Middle East where a straight and balanced posture is the norm (规范).
Body language varies from country to country. When you communicate with foreigners, one safe way is to understand, respect and follow the culture.
1. Why does the author write the first paragraph
A. To tell us the writing purpose. B. To show ways of communicating.
C. To stress the importance of language. D. To compare the cultural differences.
2. What can we learn about body language according to the text
A. Constant eye contact is advisable in Japanese.
B. Sitting with crossed legs is popular in the Middle East.
C. Shaking hands only happens between men in Romania.
D. The ‘‘thumbs up” sign can be considered polite in Cerdena.
3. Which can best describe the author’s advice on communication with body language
A. Practice makes perfect. B. Actions speak louder than words.
C. Seeing is believing. D. When in Rome, do as the Romans do.

A 15-year-old scientist and inventor has been named as Time’s first ever Kid of the Year.
Rao is a high school student from Colorado. She was chosen from 5,000 U.S.-based nominees (被提名的人). Time said in a statement that Rao stood out for her ability to apply scientific ideas to real-world problems and her efforts to motivate other kids to take up their own causes. Rao told the Associated Press that “the prize is nothing that I could have ever imagined. And I’m so grateful and just so excited that we’re really taking a look at the upcoming generation and our generation, since the future is in our hands.” She insists that starting out small doesn’t matter, as long as you’re enthusiastic about it.
It’s just the latest recognition for the teenager, who was named last year to the Forbes 30 Under 30 list. Rao won praise in 2017 after she developed a portable device to detect lead (铅) in water. She went on to cooperate with scientists in the water industry to try to get the device on the market.
The young scientist has also developed an app called Kindly that uses artificial intelligence to help prevent cyberbullying (网络欺凌). It allows teens to type in a word or phrase to find out if the words they’re using are hurtful and amount to (等于) bullying, and thus should be avoided.
In an interview with Time, Rao said that her pursuits (追求) in science started early as a way to improve conditions in society. In a world where science is increasingly questioned or challenged, Rao insists that its pursuit is an important act of kindness. It is the best way that a younger generation can better the world. Science and technology are being employed as never before to handle various issues, such as global warming, the outbreak of disease and so on, she noted.
“We have science in everything we’re involved in, and I think that’s the biggest thing to put out there, that science is cool, invention is cool, and anybody can be an inventor,” Rao said. “Anybody can do science.”
4. What is one of the reasons for Rao being honored by Time
A. The up-to-date ideas she had come up with.
B. The large amounts of time she had devoted.
C. The influence she has on young generations.
D. The optimistic attitude she holds to the future.
5. Rao’s inventions mentioned in the passage can be described as __________.
A. functional B. environment-friendly
C. interactive D. money-saving
6. What contributes to Rao’s enthusiasm for science
A. Her tolerance for problems. B. Her amazing brain power.
C. Her exposure to challenges. D. Her concern about society.
7. What can be a suitable title for the passage
A. High School Student Struggling for Big __________.
B. Young Scientist Named TIME’s Kid of the Year
C. Scientific Achievements Applied to Our Real Life
D. Advanced Inventions Used in Bettering the World

Plastic baby bottles produce microplastics when heated. Should you be worried about their side-effects We still don’t have enough evidence of health risks posed by micro-plastics to infants or adults.
“The last thing we want to do is unduly alarm parents,” said John Boland, a professor at Trinity College Dublin in Ireland and one of the authors of the Nature Food study. While the health effects of micro-plastics are still unknown, parents can significantly reduce their infants’ exposure by adding some steps to their bottle preparation routine, Boland said. He recommended letting plastic bottles cool completely after sterilization (消毒) in hot water, then washing them out at least three times with water that’s been allowed to cool to room temperature after being sterilized by boiling. Researchers here also found that plastic tea pots, plastic instant noodle cups and plastic food storage containers all released similarly high levels of micro-plastics when subjected to (受到) heat.
As for what those micro-plastics may be doing in our bodies, the evidence so far is quite limited and unclear. Schwabl, another professor, said that points to a need for more research into micro-plastics released from plastic food storage containers, especially when they are subjected to high temperatures. He noted some research has found micro-plastics can cause inflammation (发炎) of the organs, while other studies show they do not harm. “The threshold (界限) at which they cause problems has not been determined for humans,” Schwabl said. For now, Schwabl agrees we shouldn’t panic. He’s avoiding plastic containers in his daily life- “not so much that 1 am afraid of the absorption, but I think I may be contributing to reducing the amount of plastic waste that makes its way into the environment ”
At the moment, there is no need to be afraid, but it is an open question and still in need of further research.
8. What does the underlined word “unduly” mean in Paragraph 2
A. Properly. B. Extremely. C. Obviously. D. Specially.
9. Which factor counts in the release of micro-plastics
A. Temperature. B. Products. C. Time. D. Containers.
10. What’s Schwabl’s attitude towards micro-plastics
A. Panic. B. Concerned. C. Indifferent. D. Critical.
11. How is the passage developed
A. By providing the examples. B. By giving definitions.
C. By analyzing the figures. D. By comparing the findings.

What’s a spacewalk Any time an astronaut gets out of a spacecraft while in space, it is called a spacewalk. Astronauts go on spacewalks for many reasons. For example, experiments can be placed on the outside of a spacecraft. This lets scientists learn how being in space affects different things. By going on spacewalks, astronauts can also fix certain things instead of bringing them back to the earth to fix.
When astronauts go on spacewalks, they wear spacesuits to keep themselves safe. Inside spacesuits, astronauts have the oxygen they need to breathe and the water they need to drink. To keep the astronauts and the spacecraft safe, the astronauts must leave and go back to the spacecraft through a special door. When on a spacewalk, astronauts use safety tethers to stay close to their spacecraft, which connect the spacewalkers with the spacecraft. They keep astronauts from floating away into space. Another way astronauts stay safe during spacewalks is by wearing a SAFER. SAFER is worn like a backpack. It helps an astronaut move around in space.
How do astronauts train for spacewalks One way is by going for a swim. Floating in space is a lot like floating in water. Astronauts practice spacewalks underwater in a huge special swimming pool. For every one hour they will spend on a spacewalk, astronauts need to train seven hours in the pool. Another way astronauts practice for a spacewalk is by using virtual reality (虚拟现实). It looks and feels just like a spacewalk.
Today, only three countries have finished spacewalks independently. They are Russia, the United States and China. The first person to go on a space walk in the world was Alexei Leonov from Russia. Zhai Zhigang is the first Chinese astronaut to go on a spacewalk. The world record of spacewalks is held by Russian astronaut Anatoly Solovyev. He has been on 16 space walks and spent more than 82 hours outside in space.
12. What can an astronaut do by going on a spacewalk
A. Breathe fresh air. B. Collect anything he wants.
C. Carry out an experiment. D. Study how things change in space.
13. What does the underlined word “tethers’’ in Paragraph 2 probably mean
A. Special ropes. B. Spacesuits. C. Spacecraft. D. Special backpacks.
14. What can we learn from the last two paragraphs
A. Walking in space is as easy as going swimming.
B. A virtual reality should be used in a spacewalk.
C. Only three countries have ever tried spacewalk.
D. Russia keeps the world record of spacewalks.
15. Where is this passage most likely from
A. A diary. B. A magazine. C. A science fiction. D. A guidebook.

阅读下面短文,根据所给情节进行续写,使之构成一个完整的故事。
I am a proud mother of three children, my last little one being delivered in the middle of this pandemic (疫情). She was born in August and her name is Aida.
Shortly after having Aida, my mother-in-law Ann showed me something she learned from her friend’s mother in an art class she attended weekly, She had showed me how to knit (编织) a scarf.
I spent a lot of time breastfeeding my sweet little girl, so I had some extra time to do something with my hands throughout the day. I enjoyed making the scarf so I purchased tons of yarn (线) since it was winter. I wanted to make scarves for my three children as Christmas gifts.
There was a new family that moved in down the street. The only daughter of the family was Jane, a shy girl, aged 14, the same age of my oldest son David. It seemed that she came from a financially disadvantaged family, for she always wore old clothes. Worse still, in such cold days, she had no more clothes to wear and trembled with cold.
Due to the pandemic, society was thrown into crisis mode. Schools were closed, food supplies and deliveries were suspended and children were stuck at home. In such discouraging time, however, they became good companions, talking and playing at home or around the houses.
It was dreadfully cold this winter. Every time David came back from outside, with red face, he always cried, “Mum, it is freezing outside!” Then, he came over to see whether I finished the scarf. I could tell how impatient he was to wear my scarf sooner! I had to speed the project to satisfy his expectation. But David comforted me by saying he could wait a few days. What a kind and considerate boy he was! Then my great art project finally was accomplished on the morning ahead of Christmas.

写前导读:本文是一篇记叙文。作者准备给自己的三个孩子织围巾作为圣诞节礼物,让他们温暖过冬。而新邻居家的女孩Jane(简)和作者的儿子David(大卫)一样大,却衣衫单薄。作者织的围巾终于在圣诞节前的一个早上完成了作者把围巾围在David的脖子上,接下来会发生什么呢?David回来说Jane也应该得到一条围巾,David会怎么做呢?
I wrapped the scarf around David’s neck. David’s face lit up with joy. Stroking the scarf softly, David excitedly kissed me in the check, beaming at me “Thank you. Mum. This is the best gift I have ever received.” Before I could say anything, he dashed out to join Jane with a spring in his steps. I felt relieved and content as a mother, seeing David play happily outside, with the scarf sheltering him to brave the bone-chilling wind. Wearing a smile on my face, I continued my chores that morning.
Later that day David came back saying Jane also deserved a scarf. Obviously, David noticed Jane could hardly bear the freezing weather with worn-out clothes. “Can I give this to Jane as a Christmas gift ” David ventured in a low voice. Smilingly, I nodded. Seeing David rush into Jane’s house with the scarf in his hand, I felt a burst of pride. I was happy that both of them received the best gift for Christmas. For Jane, a scarf to keep warm, and for David, a taste of happiness of giving.
