There are two kinds of people: those who like to pack up leftovers as soon as dinner is over, and those who let leftovers sit out for a few hours so they can cool down.
However, both leaving leftovers out for a long period of time and adding hot items to the fridge can cause problems.
Whether you should immediately put food in the fridge or let it sit out to cool depends on its temperature. Dangerous bacterial (细菌的) growth happens between 41 and 135 degrees F. Potentially harmful bacteria grows most rapidly at these temperatures.
Placing lots of hot food in the fridge can raise the temperature of the fridge into this danger zone. Fridge temperatures should always be set below 40 degrees F. This may help the food get out of the danger zone as fast as possible.
However, there’s no harm in putting hot food directly into the fridge if you need to. If you are a forgetful person, or if you won’t be around to store the food after it has cooled enough, go ahead and put it in the fridge. Your fridge can handle the heat and get the food cooled quickly.
Food should never stay out at room temperature for more than two hours. Leftovers can become breeding grounds (滋生地) for dangerous bacteria if they’re left out too long and can make people sick.
“It is OK to leave the food cooling outside before you hit the two-hour mark,” says Serena Poon, nutritionist of Le Cordon Bleu’s Grand Diploma training program. “In fact, the sooner you can get your leftovers in the fridge, the better.”
28. Which temperature most contributes to the growth of harmful bacteria
A. Below 40 degrees F. B. Between 39~40 degrees F.
C. Between 41~135 degrees F. D. Above 135 degrees F.
29. What is the author’s attitude towards putting hot food directly into the fridge
A. Unclear. B. Neutral. C. Worried. D. Unconcerned.
30. What does Serena Poon suggest doing about the leftovers
A. Dividing them into small parts.
B. Storing them in the fridge right away.
C. Waiting until they cool down completely outside.
D. Leaving them sitting at room temperature for two hours.
31. What is the best title for the text
A. When to Pack up Leftovers. B. How to Prevent Bacterial Growth
C. To Cool Food Outside or in the Fridge D. A Good Idea to Store Food in the Fridge
【答案】28. C 29. B 30. B 31. C

"Long time no see.” is a very interesting sentence. When I first read this sentence from an American friend’s e-mail, I laughed. I thought it was a perfect example of Chinglish.
Obviously, it is a word-by-word literal translation (直译) of the Chinese greeting with wrong English grammar! Later on, my friend told me that it is a standard American greeting. I was too surprised to believe her. Her words were unbelievable at all. So I did research on . To my surprise, there are over 60 thousand web pages containing “Long time no see.” Though it is sort of informal, it is part of the language that Americans use daily. Interestingly, if you type this phrase in Microsoft Word, the software will tell you that the grammar needs to be corrected.
Nobody knows the origin of this Chinglish sentence. Some people believe that it came from Charlie Chan’s movies. In the 1930s, Hollywood moviemakers successfully created a worldwide famous Chinese detective (警探) named “Charlie Chan” on wide screens. Detective Chan liked to teach Americans some Chinese wisdom by quoting Confucius. “Long time no see.” was his symbol. Soon after Charlie Chan, “Long time no see.” became a popular expression in America thanks to the popularity of these movies.
Some scholars compare America to a huge melting pot. All kinds of cultures are mixed in the pot together, and they change the color and taste of each other. Language is usually the first thing to be influenced in the mixed pot.
You can have some examples from other countries, such as pizza from Italian, sushi from Japanese, and déjà vu from French etc. There is a long list! Since Americans admire Chinese culture more and more nowadays, I believe more Chinese words will become American English in the future. In this way, the American’s melting pot keeps adding richness.
32. What did the writer himself feel surprised at
A. The Chinglish expression “Long time no see.”
B. So many literal translations of the expressions used in America.
C. “Long time no see.” is used as a standard American English greeting.
D. Finding out Americans use the expression every day.
33. What do the underlined words “melting pot” in Paragraph 4 probably mean
A. Confucius’s words. B. Culture mixture.
C. A kind of cooked dish. D. American changing cultures.
34. What can be inferred from the passage
A. Detectives translated the phrase “Long time no see.”
B. Cultures cannot be changed in the huge melting pot.
C. The huge melting pot greatly affects all kinds of languages.
D. Hollywood made “Long time no see.” popular.
35. What is the main idea of the passage
A. American English keeps being enriched by different cultures.
B. Americans have a strong interest in Chinese culture.
C. Some American expressions can be used in China.
D. Some Chinese expressions are introduced into English.
【答案】32. C 33. B 34. D 35. A

These days, videos of “ diving grandpas” from north China’s Tianjin are popular on the Internet. In the videos, they jumped off the Shizilin Bridge into the 7-meter-deep Haihe River. However, on Wednesday, they announced that they would give up the sport.
With an average age of 60, the diving grandpas have much experience in diving. They started as a group of local diving lovers. They went swimming in the city’s rivers, and later they tried their hand at diving. The hobby has now lasted for more than thirty years.
Videos on the Internet have drawn lots of tourists from across the country to the Shizilin Bridge over the Haihe River, where “diving grandpas” perform diving. However, some inexperienced divers, trying to follow“ diving grandpas”, have met with accidents and got themselves injured. Some of the grandpas have begun volunteering to keep order for the crowds that come to see the performance on the bridge. However, accidents still continued to happen. As reported, members of the Blue Sky Rescue team in Tianjin said that they rescued 14 people at the risk of drowning or other injury in just two days.
The grandpas then made a difficult decision. They stopped diving off the bridge. They also prevented inexperienced locals and children as well as tourists from diving from the bridge . There are two kinds of people: those who like to pack up leftovers as soon as dinner is over and those who let leftovers sit out for a few hours so they can cool down.
D
