Christmas vacations: 3 of the best places to go
From Canada to the Philippines, these 3 places around the world offer some of the best holiday atmosphere for a Christmas-drenched vacation.
Bethlehem, Pennsylvania
Bethlehem offers a smaller-city Christmas escape. Bethlehem is proud of its Live Advent Calendar, which can be enjoyed starting at 5:30 p.m. from December 1 to 23.
It is a free, family-friendly event in which a town crier rings a bell up and down Main Street to call visitors to the Goundie House (the oldest house on Main Street). A child from the crowd is invited to come knock three times, and then a local business comes out with a surprise for everyone.
Quebec City, Canada
A perfect place for environmentally friendly, outdoor enthusiasts, Quebec is full of winter activities, offering holiday programs for different tastes.
Old Quebec is turned into a beautiful Christmas village. Sausage and roast chestnut lovers can browse the goods at the German Christmas market. Can’t make it for Christmas There’s still the Quebec Winter Carnival from January 25 to February 11, 2024.
San Fernando, Philippines
If Asia were to have a Christmas capital, San Fernando in the heavily Roman Catholic Philippines would be a top nomination.
The city, is famous for its Giant Lantern Festival, which starts on December 12 and ends January 1. San Fernando’s lantern-making tradition dates back to the late 18th century.
The highlight of a visit here is a colorful, electric Christmas lantern that symbolizes the Star of San Fernando.

The island of Rottumeroog in the Netherlands is an uninhabited (无人居住的) wilderness heavily protected by European nature laws. I traveled there back and forth many times for a job — an amazing opportunity, as visitors were usually not allowed. For much of my time there, I was alone. My job was to take pictures to help others learn about this place.
I grew up near the coast and open setting was familiar to me. I tried to avoid leaving my own footprints on the island, which has a sand foundation and is gradually moving to the southeast, guided by the current. I walked its perimeter (周边) daily, training myself to listen and watch for small changes in this landscape that was so simple. You could draw it with just a few lines.
One of my favorite spots to explore was along the shore where an old building once stood. All that remained were some half-buried bricks, among which shells and ocean wastes collected. One day I noticed a bottle in the broken stones unlike others I’d previously found — this one’s cap was screwed on. I opened it and discovered a handwritten note inside. In English, it said: “My name is Meike and I’m 11 years old. I have good friends and you ”
As I began writing back — Meike had given her school in the Netherlands as a return address — I tried to describe the feeling of working here: On Rottumeroog you see only earth, water, and sand, and the wind whistles in your ears. Meike eventually received my letter, and now, years later, I am still in touch with her family. People tend to think that being alone is a bad thing. But to me it felt like freedom in every vein.

The Space-Time Painter, written by Chinese writer Hai Ya, won the Hugo Award for Best Novelette recently. Hai became the third Chinese winner of the world’s top award for science fiction writing, following sci-fi writers Liu Cixin and Hao Jingfang.
The Space-Time Painter was inspired by a painting masterpiece, Qianli Jiangshan Tu by Wang Ximeng from the Song dynasty. Modeled on the life of Wang, Hai Ya has created the character of painting talent Zhao Ximeng. Zhao painted for an emperor more than 1,000 years ago.
After much pain and suffering, the painter’s mind abandons his physical body and enters a space. In the space, a modern police officer is investigating a case involving an ancient painting. The story exposes the social phenomenon of the period during which the painting was created.
Hai shared his source of inspiration for the award-winning book. “I watched a program named National Treasure and the detailed information of the painter of Qianli Jiangshan Tu was introduced. This interested me,” he said. He added that the painter was a gifted young man but was never seen again in history, which was an idea that could be explored with science-fiction. In this story, Hai did his best to balance the relationship among the plot, characters and history. He hoped to bring readers a mature work.
Hai, also a financial worker, thought himself more a sci-fi lover than a writer. “I write while doing my job, so I have very little time to write every day,” he said. “But I think as long as I love it and am willing to put effort into it, I will see hopes.”

Bananas have happy superpower. Here’s the science, from a researcher who specializes in the links between nutrition and mood. Ninety percent of Americans say they eat bananas at least once a month, which are followed by apples, making them the most popular fruit in the U.S. Not only are bananas delicious in healthy banana bread and smoothies; but eaten alone, bananas are packed with healthy vitamins and nutrients. Among its various benefits, this sunny yellow fruit has a happy superpower: it can serve as an important mood-booster.
“Due to the state of the world right now, a lot of people are having problems with stress, anxiety, depression, burnout and sleeplessness,”says Shawn Talbott, Ph.D, a nutritional biochemist who specializes in researching the links between nutrition and mood. If you can relate, Dr. Talbott offers his understanding into why our love for bananas is a bright spot in the American diet.
Dr. Talbott explains the main reason bananas may be the basic mood food: one banana contains 20 percent of your recommended daily allowance of vitamin B6. This vitamin is scientifically shown to reduce depression and anxiety, better the effects of stress, and improve mood overall, according to a 2019 study of how B vitamins affect mood, published in Nature.
The trick is vitamin B6’s power to produce serotonin (血清素), a powerful brain neurotransmitter, which is nicknamed the “happy hormone (荷尔蒙).” Dr. Talbott adds that bananas are also high in prebiotic fiber and potassium (钾), which are other nutrients linked to a good mood.
In fact, people who ate a diet higher in potassium showed less depression and a better mood overall, according to a study published in the British Journal of Nutrition. Dr. Talbott explains that vitamins, including B6, are one way to help support your body and mind in dealing with all of problems.

To fight against learning loss over the vacation, Tennessee is funding (提供资金) the delivery of surprise books to keep almost a quarter million kids interested in reading.
In response, Governor’s Early Literacy Foundation (GELF) has taken a step further by expanding its K-3 Home Library program to include all lower grade students in a public school across the state. Working in partnership with Scholastic, the program will provide 1.2 million books for over 200,000 students, teachers and librarians.
To ensure the books reach their intended readers, they will be delivered directly to the homes of participating students in six packages filled with grade-level books, at no cost to families or schools. One parent who joined the program last summer said her son struggled to read but was improving every week. These couldn’t have come at a more perfect time. A Morgan County educator praised the program for getting much-needed books into the hands of students who may not have access (使用的机会) to them at home, for it can have a significant impact on their overall academic performance.
“If we don’t get reading right, everything else can go wrong,” said James Pond, GELF President. “Our goal is to encourage a culture of reading in Tennessee. We achieve this by meeting students and providing them with the books and resources they need to become lifelong learners. We hope other states look to us as a leader in early literacy (读写能力) efforts.”
Most parents reported that their children were excited to receive the books and said they were valuable to their families. The books included in the Home Library program were selected by a group of 28 Tennessee educators. Barbara Lakin, a former fashion designer living in New York, spends hundreds of hours sewing (缝纫)unique, well-designed dress for old Barbies she buys or donated dolls. The little girls who are going to get these dolls are migrants(移民). Most of them have traveled with their family for months to get to the US border, usually escaping from poor economies and dangerous situations at home in Central or South America.
“It’s hard to imagine what these children have gone through. I think for a child to have a toy, especially in these conditions, is really important. It’s something that cap comfort them, something that they can hold close. ”While toys will never take away the hurt they experienced or the hardships they still face, Lakin said the dolls do make a difference. It’s more than just a Barbie doll; at least for a moment, these young migrants can be simply children again. “I think that is particularly important to them, ”Lakin said.
“I get a lot out of it, too. I personally like to hand them out because I love being able to say, I made this for you. ‘and the smiles and the happiness they give me; it’s moments like that that make it all worthwhile. ”
Lakin has given away nearly 20 Barbies so far and hopes people will donate more, especially black and brown Barbies that look more like the girls who will get them. “I want to give them dolls that look more like them. ”
Similar to the message seen in the wildly popular “Barbie” movie, Lakin wants to make sure these dolls don’t create stereotypes(固化印象)on these girls but instead remind them of their worth and the power of their individuality.
4. What is the feature of the Barbies given by Lakin
A. They are intended for native girls. B. They are partly donations from others.
C. They are designed by migrants. D. They are less attractive in appearance.
5. What does Lakin think of giving away the Barbies

Any dog owner can tell you that there’s no love like the one a pup gives you. Dogs love humans — and it turns out, that connection can actually help us train dog robots, too.
In a study published Wednesday in the journal PLOS ONE, researchers surveyed 153 dog owners about the types of behaviors they like to see in their pups. Owners responded with a variety of different types of actions they preferred. The researchers identified seven types of behaviors people love to see in their dogs. These behaviors could be programmed into robotic dogs to help make them friendlier, which would be beneficial in a number of ways.
The robot-pups can help provide the same mental health benefits for people as an actual dog while avoiding issues like being bitten or having to take the dog on annoying walks every now and again. In fact, there’s already some research that suggests the robot pets might help enrich the lives of the elderly and dementia (痴呆) patients by giving them companions to socialize with — improving cognition (认知) and even physical health in some cases.
But there’s a big issue researchers need to overcome: It might not actually be ethical (道德的) to make robot-pups. After all, is it right to potentially mislead an elderly patient with dementia into thinking that they’re interacting with a dog instead of a robot The study even quotes philosopher Robert Sparrow who wrote about the issue of robot companions two decades ago. “For an individual to benefit significantly from ownership of a robot pet, they must systematically cheat themselves about the real nature of their relation with the animal,” Sparrow wrote in 2002, “and the design and production of these robots is unethical in some way as it encourages this trick.”
But even so, the potential for benefit is still there — enriching people’s life. So one day in the near future we might see robot-pups at the dog park or walking on the sidewalk alongside their owners.
8. What did the researchers’ study focus on
A. Training and getting on with dogs. B. Dogs’ behaviors preferred by people.
C. Different behaviors among dogs. D. People’s attitudes towards dogs.
9. Why are dementia patients mentioned in Paragraph 3
A. To show the benefits of robot-pups to people.
B. To stress the significance of researching on robot-pups.
C. To indicate the popularity of robot-pups among patients.
D. To explain the impact robot-pups have on solving social issues.
10. What is Robert Sparrow’s biggest concern about a robot pet
A. Its functions are limited. B. It may go against honesty.
C. It will cost too much money. D. It may have quality problems.
11. What’s the author’s attitude to the future of robot-pets
A. Doubtful. B. Encouraged. C. Indifferent. D. Confident.

Culdesac, which describes itself as “the first car-free neighborhood in the Us”, admitted its first 36 residents in Tempe, Arizona, US, earlier this year. The $170 million neighborhood, with its white buildings and narrow walkways, is expected to hold around 1, 000 people when the full 760 units are completed by 2025. Similar projects in Charlotte, North Carolina, and Houston, Texas, are also underway.
In a country as car-dependent as the US, Culdesac is no lack of foresight (远见). Although some densely populated (人口密集的) coastal Us cities like Boston and New York City are walkable and have ample public transportation options like taxis, buses and light rails, the majority of Americans are entirely dependent on cars to get around.
This dependence on cars doesn’t come cheap, unfortunately. In a 2023 study, the American Automobile Association said that it costs an average of about 89,000 yuan per year to own and maintain a car in the US.
So, what is stopping Americans from abandoning cars and accepting relatively cheaper choices like e-bikes In a word, unsafe roads that prioritize cars over people. According to a 2018 report by WHO, the US traffic accident death rate is about 50 percent more than similar nations in Western Europe. At the same time, walkers and cyclists in the US are often blamed for being hit by drivers rather than the other way around.
Still, there’s hope. By choosing a new car-free way of living, US projects like Culdesac can provide another way of living that’s both healthier and more affordable and, in turn, influence others to live a better way as well. As Vanessa, a resident of Culdesac, said, “For some, cars equal freedom, but for me, it’s limitation, Freedom is being able to just simply walk out and access places. “
12. What can we learn about Culdesac from the text
A. It is expected to hold only 1, 000 people, B. It is the world’s largest car-free neighborhood,
C. It will be finished by the end of this year. D. It is thought to be forward-thinking.
13. What does the underlined word ”ample“ in Paragraph 2 probably mean
A. Enough. B. Possible. C. Similar. D. Special.
14. Why are Americans unwilling to give up cars, according to the text
A. Maintaining a car is cheap. B. E-bikes are not widely available.
C. Road conditions are unsafe. D. Drivers are respected by others.
15. What influence can car-free projects like Culdesac have on American society
A. Limiting freedom of movement. B. Making local residents feel safer.
C. Encouraging people to explore their communities. D. Promoting a cheaper and healthier way of living.

Take the following rail routes and feast your eyes with impressive views.
Darjeeling Himalayan Railway
New Jalpaiguri to Darjeeling, India
Built by British rulers, the railway was used to transport tea, rice and other produce up and down the Himalayan foothills. Today, it’s a hit with Indian families on weekend breaks and rail fans keen to watch traffic slowly stop as the train crosses the road, rushing past fruit stalls within arm’s reach. On a clear day, passengers will be treated to views of Mount Kanchenjunga, its snowy peak turning peach in the late-afternoon light.
Qinghai-Xizang Railway
Xining to Lhasa, China
Connecting Xining in Qinghai province to Lhasa in Xizang, this 22-hour journey is the highest rail route in the world. The Skeena
Jasper to Prince Rupert, Canada
With the ice-glazed tops of the Canadian Rockies sparkling all around it, the train curls out of Alberta past the Rockies’ highest peak-the majestic Mount Robson-followed by the Cariboo Mountains, at the foot of which lie green lakes as still as glass. From a panoramic view, passengers can keep eyes on black and grizzly bears, white-tailed deer, elk and moose, as well as bald eagles diving through the air.
Bernina Express
Chur, Switzerland to Tirano, Italy
Short but very sweet, a journey on the Bernina Express takes four hours to wind its way from the city of Chur in the Swiss Alps down to the Italian city of Tirano. It only takes one wrong step near a lake in the winter for disaster to happen. Pepper, the dog and his mom found that out the hard way.
The two of them were taking a morning walk in Chicago along Lake Michigan when Pepper, a 7-year-old dog, got free of its rope, slipped on some rocks, and fell onto the ice sheets of the lake. As Pepper tried to climb back up to his human owner, the ice around him broke, and he began floating (漂浮) away!
Since the water was so cold, Pepper should be saved as soon as possible. As Fire Deputy District Chief Jason Lach said, hypothermia (a serious medical condition caused by very low temperature) can start within several minutes. Thankfully, firefighters were already nearby practicing underwater ice dives.
Just 10 minutes later, 40 rescue (救援) workers arrived, along with fire department vehicles and a helicopter. By the time the officials in the helicopter noticed Pepper, he and his ice float were 500 feet out into the lake. Firefighter Chris Iverson dove into the water and swam out to Pepper. Two hours of screen time a day is enough to “dumb down” children or result in depression or physical illness, a global study has found.
The global study analyzed data measuring screen time, physical activity, mental health indicators and physical illness reported by 577, 000 children aged 11, 13 and 15 from 42 rich countries. It found that screen time—not including school work—averaged 6. 3 hours for boys and 5. 4 hours for girls.
The Australian-led study shows girls experience unhealthiness after just two hours watching screens including television, social media or online gaming. However, boys are more likely to be physically active, they can safely spend twice as much time on screens each day before suffering health problems.
Dr Khan said too much time spent watching TV, gaming or on social media could lead to “reduced learning abilities”. “If you spend more time on screens you are likely not to do well in your study performance.”
“We also found there were some benefits during the first hour of daily screen use, but bad effects on mental health kick in after 75 minutes in girls and 105 minutes in boys,” Dr Khan said. The solution to mental health the study found was an hour of physical activity, and no more than two hours a day using screens, apart from schoolwork. That is to say, children need to balance screen time with “green time” outdoors. Children who exercise or play outdoors regularly are healthier and happier, the study shows.
Melbourne dad, Tom Hindhaugh, said he tried to reduce screen time for his son, Patrick, 13. “Clearly we need those screens for homeschooling. Technology is the necessary way kids can communicate and hang out with each other,” he said. “But we need to get children outside and moving. Physical activity is the key for their health, whether it’s walking, riding a bike or kicking the football.”
8. What does the study focus on about children
A. Their screen time. B. Their health habits.
C. Their gender difference. D. Their school performance.
9. What can be learned from the study
A. Boys perform no better in study than girls.
B. Boys are better at physical activity than girls.
C. Girls spend more time on school work than boys.
D. Girls are more likely to suffer ill-health than boys.
10. What is the main idea of Paragraph 5
A. The balance of school work. B. The proper time of daily screens.
C. The advantage of green time. D. The necessity of regular activities.
11. Why is Melbourne dad mentioned
A. To express parents’ concern. B. To show a successful example.
C. To support the writer’s opinion. D. To present an education method.

There is a new kind of robot called Rubion which can smartly tell ripe (成熟的) strawberries, picking them without bruising them and putting them into its basket. It sounds impossible but it is true. Its appearance is not only an answer to the labor shortage in the agricultural industry, but it also allows growers to increase the quality of its produce, which in the end benefits the consumer.
It has been a fact that the labor shortage in the agricultural industry. But for Octinion Technology the focus is clearly on adding quality. “Thanks to robotics, we have so many possibilities, much more than a human could ever do. Harvest prediction, picking according to market needs, simply picking when the berries are ripe instead of when workers are available—these are just a few examples of what is possible now for a grower”, says Tom Coen, CEO of the Octinion Technology Group. “The consumer will also notice the difference, as strawberries will be fresher and show less bruising.”
Introducing robots into an industry where almost everything gets done by hand is more of a revolution (变革) than evolution. It needs close group action with all partners. Tom Coen says, “Not only have we been working together with growers and test centers across the world for the past few years, but breeders (培育者) have been active in being part of the technological developments.”
In 2022, a team of Belgian engineers started the development of the robot. In the meanwhile Octinion wasn’t the only company presenting an idea. Product Manager Laura Guillaume says it’s not a surprise that the company from Leuven is the first to actually present a commercial product. “By developing the robot from the beginning, we are able to make it practical in greenhouses or tunnels.” Octinion plans to develop harvesting robots for other crops in the future.

Emily Bhatnagar has always loved reading. “Growing up, I was really shy, so I always turned to books,” she said. “They became my best friends when I didn’t have one.”
In 2019, when Emily was in her second year of high school, her dad suffered from cancer. The news was difficult for the family. Books became an even bigger comfort, and she started thinking about families in similar situations. When her father recovered, she came up with a plan to help others. “The idea came from the fact that there were kids who were facing the same problem,” she said.
Then, Emily started the book drive in her hometown, Gaithersburg, Maryland. The goal was to collect books and give them to kids being treated for cancer in local hospitals. Her father was not surprised by this plan. “She always wants to do things for the neighborhood,” he said. Since the start of the book drive, which she calls For Love & Buttercup, Emily has collected more than 10,000 books.
Emily had no idea how much attention her work would get. She started by posting on social media, asking people in her area to donate. “I was expecting maybe two or three neighbors to do it,” she said. “But it ended up blowing up,” especially when newspapers began reporting it.
The Children’s Inn is one of the places where Emily has donated books. “Donations like Emily’s share a piece of the world with kids and families that they may not experience,” said its director, Aisha Campbell. Emily continues to run the book drive with her parents’ help. She hopes to one day make it reach more kids. The memory of the first time she visited children who’d received her books sticks with her. “It was the best day of my life,” she said. “I realized I wanted to do this type of work forever.”

Across much of Spain on Tuesday morning, a thin layer (层) of red dust (尘埃) coated everything outside. This included cars, buses, trees, and plants.
As the sun rose, the dust in the air turned the skies in some cities a strange orange. The cause of the dust and unusual sky color wasn’t a forest fire, but the dust from the Sahara Desert. Every year, a large cloud of dust rises from the Sahara Desert. It’s called the Saharan Air Layer. Usually, it crosses the Atlantic Ocean as part of a natural cycle (圈) that helps develop farmland in Central and South America.
But sometimes, depending on the weather, the layer of dust gets forced to the north. Large sandstorms in northern Africa lift sand and dust into the air, where it gets blown toward Spain. These kinds of storms aren’t unknown in Spain. In fact, it has a special name, calima. It is so large that it can be seen from space. A NASA scientist says it’s like a river of dust in the air. That river of dust has met with a river of wet air driven by strong winds. People in some cities, like Malaga and Navarra, reported that it was raining dust. In other places, the dust changed the color of the snow on the ground.
The dust cloud continued to move north and west, hitting both France and the United Kingdom. The dust is expected to keep stalking, possibly as far north as Denmark. The dust cloud may make some places a little foggy and sunsets very colorful.
Some weather experts warn that climate change could make dust storms from the Sahara Desert even more serious in the future.
28. Normally, what does the Saharan Air Layer do
A. It’s farmland-friendly. B. It does good to the desert.
C. It ends in the desert. D. It disappears in the ocean.
29. What can be learnt about the calima in Spain

C. It is huge and famous. D. It is formed near rivers.

Lots of animals play. But the behavior is best known in mammals (哺乳动物) and birds. Now the scientists at London’s Queen Mary University report that bumblebees (大黄蜂) know the same thing. But before this, there were no reports of insects playing.
Dr. Lars Chittka began to wonder if bumblebees played during an earlier test. In that test, Chittka guided bumblebees to move balls into a goal for food. He noticed that some bees were rolling (滚动) balls even when they weren’t given food. He wondered if they were playing.
To test the idea, the scientists at his lab set up a new test. First, they numbered 45 young bumblebees between one and 23 days old. The numbers let them follow bumblebees’ behavior. Then, they set up a clear pathway from the bumblebees’ home to a feeding area. On either side of the open pathway, the researchers placed small colored wooden balls. On one side of the path, the balls couldn’t move. On the other side, the balls could roll around. For three hours a day, over 18 days, the scientists opened the pathway between the home and the feeding area. The bumblebees never had to leave the pathway to find food, but they left anyway. They weren’t interested in the side where the balls didn’t move, but they made lots of visits to the side with the rolling balls.
Catching the balls with their legs, the bees would move their wings to pull on the balls, causing them to roll. The 45 numbered bumblebees did this 910 times during the test. Though some only did it once, others did it a lot. The younger ones liked to spend more time rolling balls while the older ones showed less interest in it. One bee was recorded rolling balls 44 times in a single day. One was seen rolling balls 117 times over the whole test.
The test raises important questions about how the insects’ minds work and whether they have feelings.
32. What did Chittka want to do about bumblebees in the earlier test
A. Discover if they played. B. Train them to move balls.
C. Make them learn to relax. D. Find out if they’d share food.
33. What did the scientists do to bumblebees before the new test
A. They named each of them. B. They let them interested in balls.
C. They had all of them go hungry. D. They marked them one by one.
34. What can we say about the older bumblebees’ behavior in the new test
A. They held their attention for longer. B. They understood simpler numbers.
C. They were less active in rolling balls. D. They helped the young pull on balls.
35. What’s the best title for the text
A. Bumblebees Are First Insects Known to Play B. Two Tests Prove Bumblebees Expect to Play
C. Bumblebees Are the World’s Smnartest Insects D. Scientists Make Bumblebees Work for Them
