教学目标
Through this lesson, students will gain a basic understanding of the writing techniques presented in this module and complete a writing task about your future dream job. The specific techniques are as follows: 1. Sequential sentences - Coherence: Use connecting words such as time adverbs and transitional phrases to ensure a smooth flow of language expression. 2. Sentence diversity - Language Expansion: Improve the richness of your writing by using diverse sentence structures, such as time clauses and object clauses.
教学内容
教学重点: 1. Through reading the passage in U2, students will come to understand the importance of chronological order in narrative storytelling and apply it in their writing process. 2. After compare the simple sentences and complex ones, students will get an understanding of the necessity of using diverse sentence structures in writing. Through sentence imitation, students will improve their sentences in practice. 教学难点: How to help students maximize the writing skills taught in class while writing a new article by themselves.
教学过程
I. Lead-in Show Ss a quotation: "If you want to change the world, pick up your pen and write." - Martin Luther II. Reread the article in U2 1. Read and answer the question: What writing order does the writer use in the circled part Ss answer the question with help of the time phrases. “When I was four years old, At the age of nine, As I grew older, Soon...” It clearly shows a useful timeline, in other words, the writer introduces the experience in chronological order. 2. Deep thinking: Why does the writer choose the order Because it makes the passage easy to understand. The purpose: Reread the text to uncover the writing techniques within it, providing students with examples to learn from and imitate. III. Read the article in U3 1. Quote a part of interview text in U3, and ask Ss to find the timeline “When I was fifteen, when I was seventeen, when I went to university, after about two years”, these all show us the timeline. 2. Besides the timeline, what else could you find to make the storytelling easier to follow The words, like And then, ……, After that, ……, And ……, are called sequence words. They can also make us understand the story more easily. Of course, there are more sequence words that can be used in writing, such as First, ……, Next, ……, Then, ……, Following that, ……, Finally, …… 3. Please make the following article in the correct order. a. But then, something unexpected happened. I tripped and fell down. I was in pain and felt like crying. But my friends quickly came to help me. They cheered me up and told me not to give up. b. Finally, I crossed the finish line. I didn't win the race, but I felt like a winner because of my friends. They showed me the importance of teamwork and never giving up. c. After that, I got back up and continued running. Even though I was limping, I didn't want to let my team down. My friends ran alongside me, shouting words of support. d. When I was eight, I had an unforgettable experience. It happened during our sports day in primary school. I was practicing for the relay race with my friends. We were all excited and running as fast as we could. e. That day, I learned that even if we face challenges, we can overcome them with the help of our friends. It's not just about winning, but about supporting each other and having fun together. The answer: d a c b e Q:How could you get the answer quickly and correctly The purpose: Using after learning, further reinforce the importance of timelines in writing. IV. Writing skill one When writing an article about your past experience or a future plan, it is always quite useful to use a clear timeline and sequence words. Because your readers will find your information is well organized and your article is quite easy to understand. V. Language details Compare the following two sentences: a. I still remember, when I was four years old, I sat close to the radio in the living room, listening to my favourite programmes and to the voices of my favourite presenters. b. When I was four, I sat close to the radio. I still remember it. I listened to my favourite programmes. I also listened to the voices of my favourite presenters. Q: Which sentence is better The first one is much better. Why Because it provides more details and has better sentence structures. Q: What sentence structures does the writer use "When I was four years old", it is the time clause Listening to my favourite programmes ... , it is a non-finite verb form, to make the sentence completer. And do you notice that there is an objective clause Look at here, I still remember (that) ... Sentence imitation: Teacher: I still remember, when I was 22 years old in 2008, I sat close to the TV in the living room, watching my favourite sports games and cheering for our Chinese teams. Ss finish theirs on the worksheet. One more sentence for Ss to imitate. It seemed that they were speaking not to lots of listeners but to me in person. It is the objective clause. There are other verbs that can do the same as “seem”, such as think, hope, believe, suppose and so on. Teacher: It seemed that I was more excited than the players themselves when they won gold medals. Ss finish theirs on the worksheet. The purpose: Analyze sentence structures and then imitate them, allowing students to experience the changes brought about by diverse sentence structures, especially temporal and object clauses. VI. Writing skill two To make your article more readable, you have to think about using more sentence structures, like what've learnt here, the time clauses and objective clauses. It will improve your writing a lot. VII. Write an article. Please write an article according to what shows here. Remember to use the two skills you have learned in class. The purpose: Creating situations where students can apply what they have learned helps them further consolidate their knowledge and writing skills. VIII. Homework
