Narrator: Flour, sugar, eggs, and warm clothes. These boxes are packed full of donations for the Roma Community Centre in Tomor, a village near Hungary’s border with Slovakia. And they were collected by these teenagers. Rather than spending their Saturday morning in bed, the young volunteers got up early to make the 200-kilometre trip from the Hungarian capital.
Domonkos Sera: Helping is our favourite hobby. We feel a lot better if we know that we’re not just enjoying the good life we have in Budapest but also doing good things somewhere else in the country.
Mark Takats: As a privileged teenager in Budapest, we feel it’s kind of . . .we feel it’s kind of an obligation to. . . to help those who are not that lucky but that we were.
Narrator: The donations will be distributed by this community centre to around 30 families.
Narrator: Whilst more than a quarter of 16 to 19-year-olds volunteer in the United States, it’s rare here in Hungary.
Laci Siroki: I’ve been working with volunteer groups for 16 years and this is the first time that people this young have contacted us. It’s good to see youngsters from Budapest that feel an obligation to do something in this country, to collect donations, and help the lives of others.
Narrator: These volunteers are also using social media to spread the word and encourage other young people to get involved in charitable initiatives.
Jihan: I would like to be involved also in most of the activities they do outside of school, like going to different smaller towns and villages just to help poor people. That I think, that’s also, that’s a very nice idea.
Narrator: The charity already has 20 active members and the next stop is a refugee centre in Austria. There, they plan to run workshops for children, distribute clothes, and spread the message that Hungarians can be keen volunteers as well.
