Narrator: This wild swan has no idea someone’s taking aim. Thankfully, today it’s only with a camera. Hidden in a camouflaged tent in tall grass is Mateusz Piesiak. He’s gained international recognition in recent years for his stunning pictures of wild birds, and he’s just sixteen.
Mateusz Piesiak: Now I’m waiting for cranes. They are very clever birds, so for them to come close, we have to be really well-disguised. If we come at night, the birds will think no one is inside, that it’s just grass, and they’ll behave naturally.
Narrator: He spends hundreds of hours like this all year round, even braving the bone-chilling Polish winter, but the hard work looks to have paid off. Last year, the BBC and the Natural History Museum in London recognised his talent with an award for the Best Young Wildlife Photographer.
Mateusz: I took this photo on a beach in New York. These are oyster catchers. The one on the left found something to eat and the one on the right wanted to steal it.
Narrator: But getting the right shot can take time. Mateusz takes up to a thousand photos every session and tries to get out into nature at least once every three days.
Narrator: His family’s proud and his mum is his biggest fan.
Renata Piesiak: We’re always driving him around at night and very early in the morning, and help him buy meat to attract birds of prey, sometimes 20 or 30 kilos a week.
Narrator: His eagle eye has already made him something of a celebrity at home in the southern Polish city of Wroclaw, but his feet remain firmly on the ground as he looks ahead to graduating high school. And with his newfound fame. Mateusz is also finding out what it's like to be on the other side of the camera.
