Imagine the situation. You are driving alone in a desert or on a mountain. You have no idea where you are. You passed the last house two hours ago. Then your car breaks down. It is night and it is cold. You have no mobile phone. What do you do Well, next time take a GPS with you. This invention may be able to help you. It is a device (装置) which uses satellites (卫星) to find the user’s position (位置).It can find your position to within 20 metres. A GPS cannot start your car, but at least you will know where you are.
GPS, which means Global Positioning System, is a small radio receiver. It looks like a mobile phone. You can hold it in your hand, or put in your pocket. It is sometimes put into a watch or a telephone. We also find GPS devices in cars, planes, or boats. Some of these devices have electronic maps, so you know where you are. For example, in a city they can tell you the name of the street.
There are three parts to the Global Positioning System. The first part is the receiver. You can hold it in your hand, or have it fixed into your car, plane, etc. The second part is a group of satellites orbiting the Earth. The receiver contacts at least four of the satellites and calculates (计算) its position. The third part of the system is a network of ground stations. They are all over the world. They control the satellites and make sure they are working well.
Some people think that in the future the GPS will be as common as the mobile. They are becoming cheaper and more and more accurate (精确的).There are also new uses for the GPS. Perhaps they will become like watches. Everyone will have one and you will never be lost again.

5. A Maths
6. B It is important for sb. to do sth.
7. C on the land“在陆地上”,under the water“在水下”,句意:地球上有很多动物,一些生活在陆地上,一些生活在水下。
8. D stop to do sth.
9. B throw sth. into the river“把某物扔进河里”,符合句意。
10. C provide sb. with sth.
11. B chance“机会”,advice“建议”,excuse“借口”,business“商业”。根据文章最后一段的“So my advice is this: If a snake bites you, pick up your phone.”可知选B。
12. A suddenly“突然”,nearly“几乎”,especially“尤其”,fortunately“幸运地”。
13. C 通过前文“...Henry Jackson was working in a restaurant kitchen.”
hung(原形hang“悬挂”),jumped(原形jump“跳”),ran(原形run“跑”)均与文意不符。
15. D under“在……
其他形容词noisy(吵闹的),pleased(满意的),afraid(害怕的)都与文意不符。
17. C 从前文“bit him on the hand”可知“Soon his hand began to ache...(很快他的手开始疼……)”,所以选hand。
18. D 通过“Doctors couldn’t say what was wrong”和“they didn’t know what kind of snake it was”可知“医生说不清楚状况”的原因是“他们不知道这条蛇的种类”,所以选because。
19. B send sth. to...
Everyone will have one and you will never be lost again. 故选A。
There are three parts to the Global Positioning System. It is sometimes put into a watch or a telephone. A GPS cannot start your car, but at least you will know where you are. They are becoming cheaper and more and more accurate.
Some of these devices have electronic maps... The receiver contacts at least four of the satellites... Some people think that in the future the GPS will be as common as the mobile.
26. C 由第一段信息中“About 60 people were hurt...”
27. C 由第二段信息中“Over 180,000 tourists visited the place of great interest from April 29 to May 1, during the three day holiday.”
29. D 由第四段信息中的最后一句“The competition hoped to encourage the farmers to grow better tomatoes.”
30. A 由Do you know fish come out of eggs when they are born
31. D 由After the little fish comes out of the egg, it eats the food in the egg.可知选D。
32. A 由When it is big, it leaves the egg. It swims in the water.
33. C 由Its ears are hidden(藏在) in the head.可知选C。
34. B 由Some fish have small mouths and teeth and they often eat plants.

One possible version:
With the global warming getting worse, more people choose to live a low carbon life for the purpose of reducing greenhouse gases.
We’d better save much water and paper and electricity. We should use less carbon and oil. It’s important to turn off the lights and computers when you leave the room. We should take our own bags instead of using plastic bags from the supermarket. We can buy few clothes which are unnecessary. We shouldn’t buy or use one off cups or chopsticks or bowls. It’s good for us to walk or take bikes to school instead of taking cars. We can also plant more trees.
Let’s take action and be low carbon people!
