(江苏省徐州市第一中学2022-2023学年高一下学期期中)Having good communication skills is important. They can help you with presentations in class, during job interviews, when handling arguments, and in a variety of other situations. 1
Make eye contact. Whether you are speaking or listening, looking into the eyes of the person with whom you are conversing can make the interaction more successful. One technique to help with this is to consciously look into one of the listener’s eyes and then move to the other eye. Going back and forth between the two makes your eyes appear to sparkle. 2 It is a line across the eye brows and the vertical (垂直的) line comes down the center of the nose. Keep your eyes scanning that zone.
Be aware of what your body is saying. Body language can say so much more than a mouthful of words. An open opinion with arms relaxed at your sides tells anyone around you that you are approachable and open to hearing what they have to say. 3 Often, communication can be stopped before it starts by body language that tells people you don’t want to talk.
4 Not only should one be able to speak effectively, one must listen to the other person’s words and engage in communication on what the other person is speaking about. Avoid the impulse to listen only for the end of their sentence so that you can blurt out the ideas or memories in your mind while the other person is speaking.
Slow your speech down. People will perceive you as nervous and unsure of yourself if you talk fast. 5 Practice this and, after a period of time, your speed will begin to lower. However, be careful not to slow down to the point where people begin to finish your sentences just to help you finish.
A. Develop effective listening skills.
B. Form the habit of speaking effectively
C. Begin doing exercises to lower your speech.
D. Here’s what you can do to change the situation.
E. Fortunately, there are some ways to improve your skills.
F. However, crossed ones suggest disinterest in conversation.
G. Another trick is to imagine a letter “T” on the listener’s face.

U.N. Report Warns Nature Crisis
A new U.N. report focuses on the negative effects of human activity on nature. It says one million plant and animal species on land, in the seas and in the sky are now in danger of extinction.
The 1,800-page report took three years to finish. 1 The Earth has always suffered from human activity, it says. However, these scratches (划伤) have become deep scars (伤疤) over the past 50 years. Species are going to extinct several hundred times faster than the average rate during the past ten million years. It’s something that has never happened before in human history.
7 Since 1970, the human population has doubled. The global economy has grown by four times. To feed, clothe and give energy to this fast-changing world, lots of forests have been cut down. 3 Furthermore, hunting, overfishing and pollution have also been killing species in great numbers.
The problem can be fixed, the report says. 4 The amount of land and sea that is under protection needs to increase rapidly. The report suggests governments move away from using GDP as a key measure of development. Long-term effects must be considered, too.
Professor Eduardo Brondizio of Indiana University is an author of the report. He says, “We all know what needs to be done. The knowledge is there. 5 ”

(浙江省浙江大学附属中学2022-2023学年高一下学期期中)How can teenagers keep themselves from suffering from loneliness Here are some suggestions for speeding a recovery from loneliness.
1 A smile and a friendly greeting for the student behind you in line at the cafeteria (餐厅) won’t make you best friends. But it will make you both feel good. It also can make it easier to interact the next time, and the time after that.
Find a safe place to make connections. If going to the dancing party makes you feel like you just don’t belong, try joining a special-interest group. 2 Just because you feel left out in one group doesn’t mean you’ll feel like an outsider in every other one. Look for a group that allows you to feel comfortable gradually.
Find other ways of making connections. Lonely people hunger for friendship. Sometimes feeling accepted and liked comes more easily when you do something for others rather than waiting for them to make you feel better. 3 Help a child in rending. Take notes for a disabled classmate. You might be surprised at the connections you make.
4 Loneliness is an absence of quality friendship, not of a particular quantity of friends. That’s why it’s important to know how to select a friend.
You get what you expect, so expect the best. If you expect others to be friendly, you will behave in proper ways that encourage people to be friendlier to you. 5 But starting the first step of positive expectations can make all the difference.
A. Choose the right people.
B. Loneliness won’t last long.
C. So consider becoming a volunteer.
D. Reach out to others but start small.
E. It can be hard work to be positive toward others.

4 Not only should one be able to speak effectively, one must listen to the other person’s words and engage in communication on what the other person is speaking about. Slow your speech down. People will perceive you as nervous and unsure of yourself if you talk fast. 5 Practice this and, after a period of time, your speed will begin to lower. However, be careful not to slow down to the point where people begin to finish your sentences just to help you finish.

(22-23高一下·广东深圳·期中)Coral reefs, found only in warm, shallow waters, are made up of groups of tiny animals called coral. When coral die, they leave behind hard skeletons (骨架) that build up and form reefs. As new coral grow on top, the reefs grow bigger. 1 Some look like boats, while others are shaped like horns. Some look almost like brains.
Coral reefs take centuries to grow. 2 Some threats are natural. Storms bring giant waves that can destroy coral to bits and pieces. When heavy rains wash soil off the land, the soil ends up in the water, and it blocks out the sunlight that coral need to grow.
Other threats, such as careless diving, come from humans. 3 Reef fish are highly sought by supermarkets and restaurants. To catch them alive so that they stay fresh longer some fishermen use a poison called cyanide. They spray the poison into the water, and it stuns (使……昏迷) the fish, but does not kill them. However, the poison can kill the coral and other reef inhabitants as well. Authorities are working hard to stop this kind of fishing. 4 “Fish need the reefs,” they explain. “If you kill the reefs, the fish will disappear. You are actually killing your own future.”
Another threat to reefs is harder to control. It is the rising water temperatures. Water that is too warm causes coral to get “bleached”or lose their color. Then they die. Some scientists think that global warming may be causing ocean waters to warm up quickly. 5

(22-23高一下·湖北·期中)When I was a child, my grandparents bought a second home in Arkansas and would bring me there every single summer. I would spend a lot of time outside. 1 We would collect cool-looking rocks and refill the hummingbird feeders. Almost every afternoon we would drive down to Bull Shoals lake, the “swimming hole,” and take a swim.
I always remember my grandparents calling me over to the window when a deer family was in the yard or a few hummingbirds were at the feeders so that I could watch them. 2 . I remember repeating to myself “oak trees, dogwood trees, maple trees” over and over so that I could impress him by remembering. I would search around the yard, and if I was lucky I would find a turtle. If I did find a turtle I would go to get my grandfather so that he could pick it up and put it in the kiddy pool for me to observe for a few minutes. 3 After I finished observing the turtle, my grandfather would pick it back up and return it to the bush I found it in. I would watch in amazement as it slowly stuck its legs out and crawled back under.
4 It was quiet and full of interesting natural things I never got to see in Illinois. I could definitely tell that my grandparents had an appreciation for nature as well. They disturb the land around them as little as possible and didn’t see it as annoyance, rather a beautiful view.
I think we should take the time to appreciate and observe the natural world around us. When we do this, we find that it brings us happiness and has a great value beyond just that of resources. Preservation of the natural world is important as we are dependent upon it for life. 5

Studying every day comes first. Learning any new language is a time-consuming process, more than 300 hours according to some linguists (语言学家). Rather than memorize passively for a few hours or review once or twice a week, most experts say short, regular study sessions are more effective. 2
Keep things fresh. Instead of focusing on one single task for the entire study session, try mixing things up. Study a little grammar, then do a short listening exercise, and then perhaps read an article on the same topic. Don’t do too much, and 20 minutes on three different exercises is plenty. 3
4 Talking with English natives, watching English movies or listening to English music whenever you have a chance can also help you unconsciously do better in pronunciation, speech patterns as well as listening.
Writing exercises are a great way to practice. Take 30 minutes at the end of the class or study to write down what happened during your day. 5 By making a habit of writing, you will find your writing skills improve over time.
