　What were you doing when the rainstorm came？　当暴风雨来临的时候你正在做什么？
(1)过去进行时的概念
表示在过去某一时刻或某一段时间正在进行的动作。过去进行时由“was / were＋动词 ing”构成，常与表示过去某一时间点的时间状语连用，如at that time，(at) this time yesterday / last night / Sunday等等，或者与when，while，as引导的过去时间状语连用。
(2)过去进行时的四个基本句型
①肯定句。如：He was cooking at six last night.
②否定句。如：He was not cooking at six last night.
③一般疑问句。如：Was he cooking at six last night？　
(回答：Yes，he was. / No，he wasn't.)
④特殊疑问句。如：What was he doing at six last night
(3)主从复合句中过去进行时的用法
当主从句复合句中有一分句使用了一般过去时，另一分句使用过去进行时，或主从句都使用过去进行时，表示过去的动作同时发生。
如：Jim was reading when the teacher came in.
当老师进来的时候，吉姆正在读书。
Jim was doing the dishes while Kate was watching TV.
当吉姆正在洗碗的时候，凯特正在看电视。

when和while都表示“当(在)……的时候”，引导时间状语从句。when与while本质的区别在于：when既可以指某一时间点，也可以指某一段时间，其从句谓语动词表示的动作既可以是瞬间性或非延续性的，也可以是延续性的；while指一段时间，其从句的谓语动词必须是延续性的。即指一段时间时，when可用while来代替；指某一时间点时，when不能用 while来代替。
如：When he woke up, it was eight o'clock.(正)

while作并列连词时，意为“而，然而”，表示前后意义上的对比或转折。
