In many respects one could call John Beltzer the world’s most successful songwriter. Every song that he writes is guaranteed to be a real hit not on the popularity charts, but in a child’s heart. The reason for this is that every song that Beltzer writes is for a seriously sick child. The songs never fail to make the children smile or to raise their spirits. They also play them over and over. This means more by far to Beltzer than being ranked high on the popularity charts.
Beltzer is the founder and president of Songs of Love, a nonprofit group. This group combines the voluntary efforts of musicians, songwriters, singers, and studio technicians to create unique, happy songs that reflect a child’s personality.
Beltzer believes that music is very helpful. When an adult listens to a favorite song, it makes him feel good. Thus when a little child listens to a song written just for him, the result is very uplifting. Since its founding in 1996, Songs of Love has been responsible for the composition, taping and sending more than 780 songs to children in life threatening conditions, all for free.
Unmarried and with no children of his own, Beltzer had never thought much about writing songs for children. He says that one day while he was walking down the street, the idea came to him and he instantly felt that he could make a success of it. He went home and called St.Jude Children’s Research Hospital in Memphis, Tennessee. He told them he wanted to write songs for seriously sick children, and wrote six songs in four days. Upon receiving the songs, the hospital called him with high praise. Soon after that the mother of a little girl with cancer called him to thank him and then the little girl herself did so. At that point he knew that this was his “calling”.
As is true with most charitable ventures, Songs of Love is almost always in need of money. To help in this respect, Beltzer has moved back home to live with his retired parents, who also help support his work. His long term goal is to offer songs to patients of all ages, including nursing home residents and the mentally ill. Among other efforts to raise money, Beltzer sells CDs and tapes, expecting much bigger sales. Meanwhile, Beltzer himself continues to be the most productive songwriter in Songs of Love, making sure that all requests for songs written for critically sick children will be met.
4.Why is John Beltzer, to some extent, called the world’s most successful songwriter
A.Because every song he composes tends to be a hit.
B.Because all songs are played over and over again.
C.Because his songs are intended specially for those unlucky children.
D.Because he as well as his songs always enjoys grand popularity.
5.Which word can replace the underlined word “uplifting”in Paragraph 3
A.Satisfactory. B.Adequate.
C.Inspirational. D.Appropriate.
6.What can we infer from the whole passage
A.Beltzer had had the idea of writing songs for seriously sick children long before actually doing so.
B.The hospital in Tennessee didn’t respond to Beltzer’s request immediately and positively.
C.Songwriting is the only source of income for Songs of Love.
D.Running charitable activities makes Beltzer’s finances really tight.
7.Which of the following words can best describe John Beltzer
A.Social and intelligent.
B.Compassionate and considerate.
C.Conventional and patient.
D.Confident and ambitious.
C
Science fiction writers create an imaginary world. The way things work in your imaginary world will be based on actual science. So it’s important for you to be familiar with the scientific principles and inventions that are related to your creation. For example, if you’re writing about humans living on a planet with zero gravity, then you need to know the effects of zero gravity on the human body.
Then you have to figure out the exact rules of your imaginary world. And you have to follow them. If humans have evolved to breathe underwater in Chapter 1, your character can’t drown in a swimming pool in Chapter 3. If your robots write poetry but not fiction, then you can’t throw a novelist robot into Chapter 8. The issue here is maintaining your readers’ trust. That means the reader is willing to pretend along with you. If you start out with an ordinary detective novel and then throw in someone breathing underwater in the 6th chapter, your readers’ reaction might be, “What the hell!” The imaginative spell is broken. You’ve pulled the readers out of their imagination. The same thing happens if you change the rules halfway.
Part of your preparation work for the novel is to map out its world for yourself in great detail. Decide: the history of the world, the geography, what possibilities it offers, how everything works in the new reality, and how all of these factors affect the way your characters think, feel, and react to things. You don’t have to tell your readers all the rules in the first chapter. But you have to let your readers know enough to understand what’s going on. This also allows you to work out logical problems and contradictions before you start writing.
When you are writing, remember to make it feel real. You are inviting readers to visit a new world. They will want to be able to see, hear, feel, smell, and even taste what it’s like. Whether your novel is about a world without disease or an undiscovered planet, help your readers feel like they’re actually there.
8.What’s the relationship between actual science and science fiction
A.Science fiction promotes the development of actual science.
B.Science fiction often reflects the development of actual science.
C.Actual science provides basic principles for science fiction.
D.Actual science limits the imagination described in science fiction.
9.How is the second paragraph mainly developed
A.By making comparisons.
B.By analysing causes.
C.By following the time order.
D.By giving examples.
10.What can we know from the passage
A.Readers of science fiction actually pretend the writers’ rules are true.
B.It is necessary to do some scientific experiments before writing science fiction.
C.It is more difficult to write science fiction than ordinary detective novels.
D.It is great to leave some contradictions in your science fiction.
11.What is the passage mainly about
A.How to do scientific research.
B.How to write science fiction.
C.What to expect from science fiction.
D.How to raise interest in science.

One important reason, she says, is that Dickens wrote from his heart. 18 Some of his works were written to make every reader think about how they could make a difference to their society. People always enjoy works that make them laugh out loud, cry and think, as Dickens’ novels do. Many other novelists in the 19th century wrote entertaining works. 19 Dickens wrote about situations and emotions that still interest people today. 20 His works led to many important social changes.

“Do you forget to bring your homework to school ” my sixth grade math teacher asked. I nodded my head and said in a low voice, “Yes, sir.” What a mistake I had made! I had completed my math homework. But before I left home and headed for school, I forgot to put it into my schoolbag.
“You will get a zero then,” my math teacher said. I was shocked. I had never received a zero in a math class before. But the school had rules, and the teacher had to let everyone follow them. I was immediately worried about my final math average, which was based on my homework and the tests. Would I get a C or even a D at the end of the term If so, what should I do
My next class was a PE class. As I walked down the hall with my classmates, all those feelings rushed out in hot tears. I wiped them away as quickly as I could. But when we entered the gym and sat down in our spots on the floor, it was clear to everyone around me that I had been crying.
My PE teacher, Ms. Brown, was an athletic teacher, often with a smile on her face. Her class was a good mix of calisthenics(健美操)and games that can give us all a good workout. And Ms. Brown was nice and compassionate(有同情心的). She loved her students and often came to help if the students were in trouble.
During that PE class, my mind was affected by the math homework and I was worried about my final math average. So I failed to devote my attention to Ms.Brown’s direction. And clearly, I was sad. I guessed that Ms.Brown found there was something wrong with me. When it was near the end of the PE class, she walked to me.
注意:续写词数应为150左右。

She sat down to comfort me.
Paragraph 2:

Dear Jim,
It’s great to hear from you. I feel proud to know that you are interested in Chinese history.
As for my favorite figure in Chinese history, it must be Wei Yuan, a great thinker in the late Qing Dynasty. He, in his book, Haiguo Tuzhi(Maps and Records of the World), introduced modern technologies and ideas to China. That opened our eyes to the world. In fact, he inspires me to major in English in college, to be a bridge between China and the world.
Interested in knowing more I can find you some books.Just let me know.

One possible version:
Paragraph 1:
She sat down to comfort me. “Are you OK ” she asked. I told her about my trouble. Then Ms. Brown said to me, “We all make mistakes.” She told me what happened to her several days ago. I was surprised that she also made mistakes since I had thought she was perfect. She told me the world wouldn’t end for a zero in a math class and encouraged me to study hard.
Paragraph 2:
I felt relaxed and decided to work harder at math. In math classes, I paid more attention to the teacher’s speeches. After school, I would do the math homework more carefully. And I left notes to remind me not to forget to bring my homework to school again. At the end of that term, based on my good daily performances and test scores, my final math average was an A. This experience taught me a lesson: as long as we learn from mistakes, we’re making progress.
