Last summer, my husband, Kevin, and I accepted an invitation to a camping trip. Camping sites were difficult to book. Thinking of the need for physical distance, a paddling (用桨划船) camping trip seemed great. We chose a three-night trip to Crotch Lake which is in Ontario’s North Frontenac Parklands.
Our group of 15 lived in four sites. Most people were experienced wilderness campers, but this was my first real paddling camping trip. The most difficult part for me was the planning, trying to put everything we needed into a canoe (独木舟), and being mindful of food and weather. Meal planning was quite tiring.
We put the canoe into the water near Ompah, a village at the north end of the lake. Paddling on the open water was unbelievable! As we moved, some campers on shore (岸) waved, as if welcoming us into the community. Nearly two hours passed by the time we reached our site, which Kevin and I shared with two friends. The surrounding (周围的) area of land is covered with a lot of trees. As a result, there was no chance for any walks. On the other side, this forced us to take more time to relax and enjoy our surroundings.
We chose different places to have fun each day. First, we paddled to the Whitefish Rapids, where the Mississippi River rushes into the lake. On the second day, we took a 13-kilometer round trip to the lake’s dam. And on our final morning, we snaked through the Crotch Lake Conservation Reserve, an area where there are many small islands. Being on the lake allowed us to socialize as a group while enjoying nature’s offerings.
The trip gave me a chance to immerse myself in nature. Crotch Lake was a trip I would enjoy repeating. When everyday life gets busy, memories such as this one make me relax. I can’t wait to trade my desk for a canoe and take off on another trip with friends.

On a summer afternoon, Ciara Whelan, a teacher at a New York, City elementary school, visits one of her students in the Bronx, Sapphira, who fell behind in her reading.
This home visit is the beginning of a reading program called Springboard Collaborative. Springboard runs after-school and summer programs with struggling readers. Once each week, a family member — mom, dad, grandma, an old sibling (兄弟姐妹) — attends an hour-long workshop to help learn and practice the approaches students are learning in class. “Parent engagement (参与) is the beating heart of our programs,” says founder Alejandro Gibes de Gac. “It’s the spirit in the cocktail.”
Sapphira’s Springboard program is held in a classroom at a charter school in Manhattan. In the classroom, Sapphira’s dad, sits with his daughter, helping her mark her place in the book. After a few minutes of reading together, Whelan tells parents to ask students to summarize what is happening every few pages, to check comprehension.
In the past seven years, Springboard has collected a great amount of data to prove its effectiveness. For example: In just five weeks, on average, 3 out of 4 students get to the next reading level or even further. The program also gives books to each child. Backpacks full of school supplies and tablets are offered as encouragement for completing the whole program.
Springboard plans to increase the size by spreading its model, with a goal of reaching 100,000 children in the next four years. Currently it’s running tests in different cities to see which parts of the program are necessary and important and which could be cut if a particular school lacks money for them. For example, the free tablet and backpack, it has found, don’t seem to make much difference in the program’s success. The key instead is the promise that parents make to their children.
8.What do the underlined words “Springboard Collaborative” in Para.2 refer to
A.A program to involve parents in kids’ reading practice.
B.A school where students learn to improve their reading.
C.A plan to strengthen the relationship between kids and parents.

10.What can we know about the program from the last two paragraph
A.It is running tests to see whether it is welcome. B.It intends to build a new model and spread it.
C.Its effectiveness is proved by a large amount of data.
D.Students will be given backpacks once they join in it.
11.Which of the following is a suitable title for the text
A.No Pains, No Gains B.Reading Makes One’s Life Better

The idea of turning recycled plastic bottles into clothing is not new. During the past five years, a large number of clothing companies, businesses and environmental organizations have started turning plastics into clothing to deal with plastic pollution. But there’s a problem with this method. Research now shows that microfibers(微纤维)could be the biggest source of plastic in the sea.
Dr. Mark Browne in Santa Barbara, California, has been studying plastic pollution and microfibers for 10 years. He explains that every time synthetic(合成)clothes go into a washing machine, a large number of plastic fibers fall off. Most washing machines can’t collect these microfibers. So every time the water gets out of a washing machine, microfibers enter the sewer and finally end up in the sea.
In 2011, Browne wrote a paper stating that a single piece of synthetic clothing can produce more than 1,900 fibers per wash. Browne collected samples(样本)from seawater and freshwater sites around the world, and used a special way to examine each sample. He discovered that every single water sample contained microfibers.
This is bad news for a number of reasons. Plastic can cause harm to sea life when eaten. Studies have also shown that plastic can take in other pollutants.
Based on this evidence, it may seem surprising that companies and organizations have chosen to turn plastic waste into clothing as an environmental “solution”. Ever though the science has been around for a while, Browne explains that he’s had a difficult time getting companies to listen. When he asked well-known clothing companies to support “Benign by Design”, his research project, which is trying to get clothes that have a bad effect on humans and the environment out of the market, Browne didn’t get a satisfying answer. Only one woman’s clothing company, Eileen Fisher, offered Browne funding.
12.What can we learn from the first paragraph
A.New microfibers have been discovered.
B.Making clothes from plastic bottles can’t solve the pollution.
C.The use of plastic bottle has been reduced in the past five years.
D.Turning recycled plastic bottles into clothing hasn’t been put into practice.
13.What’s the main idea of the second paragraph
A.How to wash synthetic clothes. B.How to prevent plastic pollution.
C.How microfibers end up in the sea. D.Relationship between synthetic clothes and microfibers.
14.How does Browne’s Benign by Design research project run
A.It has achieved great success. B.It is facing some difficulties.
C.It is supported by many firms. D.It hasn’t got anything done.
15.What’s the best title for the text
A.Recycled plastic clothing: solution or pollution
B.The impact of Microfibers on the sea.
C.Environmental protection: moving forward or backward
D.Turning plastic into clothing, a new step in environmental protection.

It was a cold winter Monday morning. Manu an eight-year-old was sleeping comfortably in his bedroom upstairs, at the Khagal house. Mondays are usually very difficult for him after a weekend break from his school. “Manu, wake up! It’s school time!” shouted out Manu’s mother Akhila, from the kitchen. Manu pulled the blanket over him and ignored his mother’s repeated attempts to wake him up. “Manu! It’s already 6 o’clock and your school bus will be here by 7. So please wake up and get ready. Manu continued sleeping.
Finally, after much pestering and pampering (纠缠和纵容), Manu got out of bed and started getting ready for school lazily. The school bus was already honking (按喇叭) in front of his house while Manu was brushing his teeth. Akhila requested the driver to wait for a few minutes. She quickly helped Manu get ready and helped him get to his school bus.
“Phew! Manu didn’t miss his bus today” Akhila sighed. She was really concerned about her son. Manu couldn’t do anything on time, waking up in the morning or any of his daily tasks. Akhila thought to herself “need to work out a plan to teach him a lesson in self-discipline (自律). Repeated advice and warnings haven’t changed him.”
The next day it was the usual scene at the Khagal house except that there was no effort from Akhila to wake up her son. The time was 7. The school bus honked and Akhila, unlike her usual self, asked the bus driver to leave. There was unusual confidence on Akhila’s face. Manu finally woke up at around 9 o’ clock. He ran down to the kitchen and cried out “Mom! Why didn’t you wake me up The school bus has already left and I am really late for school today.” He couldn’t stop crying. “I have a math test today and Mrs. Mangat will punish me if I miss her class and the test.” The calm face of Akhila made Manu feel more anxious.

第一节(满分15分)
Dear Frank,
Terribly sorry to hear that you’re stressed right now with the important examination approaching, I’m writing to give you some suggestions.
First and foremost, the best thing to do is make a revision timetable. Besides, make sure that regular breaks are included in the timetable so that you can study more efficiently. It would be wise of you to think about getting some exercise to relieve stress, such as swimming or jogging. Last but not least, you’d better not stay up too late every day, which will do harm to your health.
Anyway, I do hope my suggestions are practical and things will be better soon.
Yours sincerely,
Li Hua

阅读下面材料,根据其内容和所给段落开头语续写两段,使之构成一篇完整的短文。
“Mom, what do I do now Please help!” said Manu weepingly. Seeing that Manu had learnt the lesson, Akhila cleared her throat, “I can help you, but first tell me whether you have realized your problem.” At that, Manu’s face flamed with shame, his head lowered. He stammered, “Mom...I am wrong. I promise you will see a new Manu tomorrow.” Nodding with satisfaction/Seeing the regret in his eyes, Akhila told him she would send him to school and Mrs. Mangat would give him another chance to take the test.
The scene the next day at the Khagal house was a little different. At 6, Akhila walked out of her room, only to find Manu packing his schoolbag! Everything ready, he went up to Akhila and took her hand, saying, “Mom, I will give the driver a surprise today.” Hearing the smile in his voice, Akhila nodded approvingly and kissed him on the forehead. That morning, no hurry, no pestering and pampering, no continuous honking. It was the first time that Manu had tasted the fruit of discipline. He would taste it every day! (161 words)
