An elephant was standing and picking leaves from a tree. A small fly came, flying and buzzing near his ear. The elephant waved it away with his long ears.
Then the fly came again and the elephant waved it away once more.
This happened several times. Then the elephant asked the fly, "Why are you so restless and noisy Why can't you just stay in one place "
The fly answered, "I am interested in whatever I see, hear or smell. My five senses, and everything that happens around me, pull me here and there and I cannot resist(抵抗) them What is your secret How can you stay so calm and still "
The elephant stopped eating and said, "My five senses do not rule me. I am in control of myself--- my senses do not tell me what to do. This helps me stay focused on whatever I don and so, keep my mind calm and still. Now that I am eating, I am completely enjoying eating. In this way, I can just focus on enjoying my food. "
After hearing these words, the fly's eyes opened wide and a smile appeared on his face He looked at the elephant and said, "I understand! I will always be restless if I let my senses control me. Redwood trees are the tallest trees in the world. Some grow over 300 feet high, which are taller than a 30 - storey building. Think of it this way: If a six-foot tall man stood at the foot of a redwood tree, the tree would be 50 times taller than the man!
These big trees grow near the coast of California and Oregon. The climate is foggy and rainy there, which gives the redwoods a supply(供应) of water.
Redwoods can grow for hundreds of years; in fact, some have lived for over 2, 000 years! The bark (the outer covering of a tree) is very thick, protecting the trees from insects(昆虫), illnesses, and fires. The bark of redwood trees has a reddish-brown colour.
Redwood trees are very important to lumber(木材) companies because the trees are so large that each one can be cut into lots of lumber. However, many of the trees are protected in Redwood National Park. Lumber companies cannot cut the trees that grow there, so the trees will not become extinct.
( )25. What climate is good for redwood trees' growth
A. Windy and sunny. B. Windy and cloudy.
C. Foggy and cloudy. D. Foggy and rainy.
( )26. What is the function(功能) of the bark

四、信息还原
How do people find their inner talent British author and speaker Sir Kenneth Robinson talked about this at TED. He told the story of Gillian Lynne, a dancer and choreographer(编舞者)who has worked on famous musicals like Cats and Phantom of the Opera (《歌剧魅影》).
28 She couldn't think carefully about what she was learning and often found herself unable to keep still because she was bored. Her mother was quite worried about her. She took Lynne to a doctor. For 20 minutes, she talked about the problems Lynne was having at school. 29 As they left the room, the doctor turned on the radio. He then said to Lyme's mother, "Just stand and watch her." 30 The doctor then turned to Lynne's mother and said, "Mrs Lynne, your daughter isn't sick. She's a dancer. Take her to a dance school."
So she did. 31 Lynne later went to the Royal Ballet School, one of the world's greatest dance schools, and became a great dancer.
After leaving the school, she worked on some of the most successful musicals in history. 32
Those who never did well in school needn't worry. Find your inner talent like Lynne, and you can also succeed.

六、阅读表达
请认真阅读下面的短文,用英语回答短文后的问题,并将答案写在横线上。
Why do people cry Scientists say the body produces(产生) tears because it needs them. One kind of tears is for the eyes, and the other is for the heart. They both work as cleaners. If something else like dust(灰尘)gets into your eyes, tears also come into the eyes to clean it out. If you are hurt by something, your strong feelings produce some poisonous chemicals(毒素) in your body, and at the same time, tears come out with them. If tears don't help clean out these poisonous chemicals, they will do harm(伤害) to the heart.
In the United States, men are more likely to have heart problems than women. Doctors say heart problems have something to do with the pressure(压力) of life and work now. Perhaps men have more of these illnesses because they do not cry enough. They need to cry more.
In fact, you can find many ways of reducing pressure to keep fit. Crying is a natural and physical(生理的) one.
