一、阅读理解
(22-23八年级下·江苏南京·期中)In 1674, I was born on my father’s small farm in Nottinghamshire, England. I was the third of five sons. My childhood was very happy. I liked going to school and learning new things. But I often used to daydream about going to sea.
One day, Father asked, “Lemuel, have you thought about your future I think you would be a good doctor.”
I wanted to please him, so I said, “Yes, Father. I’ll go to Cambridge University and study medicine.” But as I spoke I was thinking, “At university I can also learn things that will be useful to a sailor.”
After several years of study, I became a doctor. Not long after, I asked my sweetheart, Mary, to marry me. Before long, we had children, a boy and a girl. They gave us great joy. I enjoyed being a doctor for the first few years. But then I became bored, and ideas of travel filled my mind. I imagined going to far-off places and seeing wonderful new things.
“Mary,” I said one day, “I need more adventure in my life. The captain of a ship about to sail has offered me a job as the ship’s doctor. I don’t know how long the journey will lake, but I promise I will return. And when I do, I’ll tell you and the children all about my adventures.”
So in 1699, I set sail on the Antelope from Bristol. That city is a large and very old port (港口) in the southwest of England. The captain was a good man and had sailed a great deal!
“Welcome aboard. Doctor Gulliver,” he said, “First we’ll be sailing down the Atlantic Ocean and around the coast of Africa. Then we’ll sail through the Indian Ocean to the South Seas.” Our journey went well until one morning, somewhere near Tasmania in the South Pacific Ocean.
“I don’t like the look of those clouds,” the captain said, “I think a storm is coming.”
Within an hour, a big storm began. The sea rose in great, angry waves much taller than the Antelope. The wind, now as strong as a hurricane, made a terrible sound.
“The wind is blowing the ship off course!” shouted the captain. “Look out!”

The Emperor spoke in a low voice but I could hear all the words clearly. His Majesty and I often spoke to each other but neither of us understood a single word. I tried words from many languages. No one could understand me, not even the cleverest of the Emperor’s followers.
After about two hours the Emperor left. His wife, children and their servants went also. There were strong guards around me. This was to stop the crowd of people from hurting me.
An officer told the guards to hold six men who made me angry. These men were given to me and I had to choose their punishment. I put five of them in my pocket. Then I pretended (假装) to eat the sixth man.

(22-23八年级下·江苏盐城·期中)Gulliver soon grew tired of living at home and wanted to go travelling again. He went to sea on a boat and came to a new island. There were some people in it. However, they were dirty and had long hair, and they didn’t wear clothes. They lived like animals and were not very clever. Gulliver was afraid of these people, so he ran away.

Gulliver enjoyed travelling. He worked as a doctor on a ship called the Antelope. On May 4, 1699, they were going to the Far East.

(21-22八年级下·江苏无锡·期中)Gulliver managed to get away from the small man. He found a boat and tried to sail home. However, there was a great storm at sea. The strong winds drove his boat to an island. Everyone on the island was very large. They were all more than 20 metres tall. A farmer found Gulliver and took him home to his daughter. Gulliver seemed very small to them, like a toy or a pet. The farmer’s daughter took Gulliver to town to show him around. Everyone in town was very surprised to see such a small person.

Their chairs, tables, knives, forks and plates were all much too big for Gulliver to use, so they built a small house for him to live in. Wherever the King and the Queen went, they carried Gulliver with them in his house.
One day they went to the beach. While they were there, a large eagle picked up Gulliver’s house—with Gulliver in it—and carried him high up into the air. (21-22八年级下·江苏南通·期中)I was careful to behave as well as possible, hoping the King would give me freedom early. Lilliputians soon began to lose their fear of me. They called me Man-Mountain. Sometimes I lay down and let them dance on my hand, and from time to time children came to play games in my hair. By now I was able to speak their language well.
One day the King invited me to watch their regular entertainments. I was most interested in the rope-dancing. A very thin rope was fixed (固定) about thirty centimetres above the ground. People who wanted to become the King’s officials jumped and danced on this rope, and who ever jumped highest without a miss got the best job. There was another interesting entertainment. The King held a stick in front of him, and moved it up and down from time to time. One by one, people came up to him and jumped over the stick or crawled (爬) under it. They went on jumping and crawling as the King moved the stick. The winner, who jumped and crawled for the longest time, received a blue ribbon (绶带) to wear round his waist. The second received a red ribbon, and the third got a green one. I had certainly never seen such entertainments in any of the countries I had visited before.
Some days later the King agreed that I didn’t need to be a prisoner any longer. However, I had to promise certain things before I was set free:
·to be careful not to step on any Lilliputians or their animals
·to help the Lilliputians in war till they win peace (和平)
·to stay in Lilliput until the King allowed me to leave
I agreed to everything at once. I was free at last!
Several weeks after my visit to the country, I was visited by one of the King’s most important officials. His name was Reldresal, and he had helped me many times since I had arrived in Lilliput.
“Well, my friend,” he said, “Lilliput has enemies (敌人) both at home and abroad. At home we have two political groups, the High-Heels and the Low-Heels. The two groups hate each other. As the present King and his officials are all Low-Heels, they refuse to speak to High-Heels. That’s the problem inside Lilliput. Besides, we’re getting information that the people of Blefusce are going to attack us. Have you heard of Blefusce It’s an island very near us, almost as large and important as Lilliput. They’ve been at war with us for three years.”

Another danger came from an idea that the Queen had. She knew that I liked boats, and she ordered one of her servants to make a little boat for me. The servant put the boat into a tank of water on the table. I spent many hours in this boat. One day, however, a frog jumped out of the water into the boat. One day, three of my friends came to our house.
They told me they were going to Africa. They asked me if I wanted to go with them. I said, “Yes, of course I’d love to.”
We started to prepare all the necessary things for the journey. Soon we were ready to go. I said goodbye to my wife and we started our journey. Our plan was to be back in two months.
We left Brazil (巴西) on the first of September, 1659. Our ship was very big but we were only seventeen men. The ship was full of things for business. We had cups, glass, mirrors, knives and other things.
At the beginning of our journey, the weather was very good, but very hot. In one week, a hurricane (飓风) came and it was threatening our ship for the next twelve days. After the hurricane passed, we saw we went quite far away from our original (原来的) journey and were instead close to the northern part of Brazil near the Orinoco River. The ship was badly damaged, so we could no longer go to Africa.
The captain wanted us to go back and repair the ship, but I strongly disagreed with him. We went over the maps and decided the best thing to do was to go to Barbados and repair the ship there.
When we started this short trip, a second hurricane came. The next morning one of the sailors cried out, “Land ” and at that moment the ship stopped in shallow (浅的) water. We expected the ship to break apart (解体) at any moment because of the strong wind, so we all got into the small boat the ship carried. This was very dangerous because the seventeen of us were too crowded (拥挤的) in the boat, and it had no sail.
The waves (浪) were very big. The wind was too strong. The wind pushed us to big rocks. We knew the crash was close.
Suddenly, a huge wave came and overturned the boat. I was covered with water and couldn’t breathe. I couldn’t see the others or the boat. But I saw a little beach between the rocks.
Another wave carried me to the beach. I tried to get up. I also tried to go far away from the sea. I was able to move ten metres up. I was safe. But my arms and legs were very weak. I fell down and I was lying on the beach.

(22-23八年级下·江苏淮安·期末)There were some hills around me, so I decided to build myself a little house on one of them. I walked to the top of the highest hill and looked down. I was very unhappy, because I saw then that I was on an island. There were two smaller islands a few miles away, and after that only the sea. Just the sea, for mile after mile after mile.
After a time, I found a little cave in the side of a hill. In front of it, there was a good place to make a home. So, I used the ship’s sails, rope, and pieces of wood, and after a lot of hard work I had a very fine tent. The cave at the back of my tent was a good place to keep my food, and so I called it my ‘‘kitchen’’. That night, I went to sleep in my new home.
The next day I thought about the possible dangers on the island. Were there wild animals, and perhaps wild people too, on my island I did not know, but I was very afraid. So I decided to build a very strong fence. I cut down young trees and put them in the ground, in a half circle around the front of my tent. I used many of the ship’s ropes too, and in the end my fence was as strong as a stone wall. Nobody could get over it, through it, or round it.
Making tents and building fences is hard work. I needed many tools to help me. So I decided to go back to the ship again, and get some more things.
I went back twelve times, but soon after my twelfth visit there was another terrible storm. The next morning, when I looked out to the sea, there was no ship.

(22-23八年级下·江苏宿迁·期末)I saved the grain carefully and finally had enough to plant. I built a wall around my garden to keep the wild goats away.
Then when my crop bore its fruit, the birds discovered it. The birds were not afraid of my dog at all. I shot them but as soon as I walked away, they returned. At last, I killed some birds and hung them among the crop, hoping they would serve as the scarecrows, which turned out to be successful. By harvest time, I had nearly two bushels of rice and two and a half bushels of wheat.
With my new grain to store, I found a new problem. The fine grain ran through my baskets. It took me nearly two months to form and dry two ugly pots—one for rice and one for wheat.
Next I formed a clay oven (炉灶) and made some other tools from hard wood and cloth to bake (烘烤) bread. I made and baked bread in my oven. I spent the third year on the island in farming and baking.
Soon after that, I began to think of my days sailing in a tidy boat with Xury. I wished to have a boat and explore the island by sea.
I tried to turn over the ship’ boat that I had seen washed up, but failed. I was still determined to have a boat. So I chose a strong tree and spent weeks cutting it down. Then it took me months to turn it from tree to boat.
When it was time to launch (下水), I realized I had made my boat too far from the nearest stream. The boat was far too heavy for me to move. I tried bringing the water to the boat instead of the boat to the water. I soon saw it would take me twenty years of constant labor.
I celebrated my fourth year on the island with two boats, but I was no closer to a sea journey.

(22-23八年级下·江苏南通·阶段练习)I gave the young man I had rescued bread and water I had saved. After his run and hiking to the cave, he was tired out. I showed him a blanket and a blanket and he fell quickly asleep.
As I studied him, I guessed his age at around twenty-six. He was tall with straight strong limbs (肢). The young man slept for only about a half hour before crawling out of the cave. Again he made gestures (手势) to show that he was grateful to me.
We communicated primarily by gestures at first. Soon my new servant showed himself much better at learning my language than I was at learning this. I called him Friday, for it was on Friday that I rescued him. He quickly learned “yes” and “no” and the names for various items.
We spent a full day at the cave, then returned to the beach to see if his captors (野人) remained. They had gone. Over time, Friday told me that when two tribe (部落) went to war, the victor always took away the bravest warrior (士兵) of the enemy tribe. They even ate him to get the ferocity (残暴) and courage of the warrior. I felt sick after hearing this. It sounded more than a little disgusting to me. (22-23八年级下·江苏扬州·阶段练习)I spent a lot of time making a large shelf for my cave. I found a big tree and chopped it down . This took three days. Then, I chopped off the branches. This took another two days. After that, I chopped the wood away from one side, and then from the other side. This took more than one month . Altogether it took forty-two days. In England, two men with a good saw (锯子) could have made six of these shelves from that tree in half a day.
I also spent a lot of time looking after my corn and rice crops. I had to protect them from wild animals and birds, so I made a fence around them. I shot some of the birds and hung them up near the corn. After that, all the other birds stayed away. I used one of the old swords I had taken from the ship to cut down the corn when it was ready. I was very proud of my corn and rice and worked hard to increase my crops. A few years later, I would have enough corn to make bread. I had to find a way to grind(碾碎)the corn into flour, but the rocks on the island were not hard enough. I finally discovered that a very hard piece of wood would do. I used some cloth to separate the meal from the husks(外壳). Not having an oven, I made some square pots with lids and covered them with hot ashes. This baked the dough, and I had bread! I made my cave bigger again to hold the corn and flour so that I could make bread whenever I needed to.
I sometimes wondered how I could get to the land which was visible from the other side of the island. I went to the ship’s boat that was blown onto the beach in the shipwreck. However, I could not get it to the water. It was too heavy. I tried many different ways of doing it, but none of them were successful.

At the horse fair, there was a man with a gentle voice and kind grey eyes. He offered twenty-three pounds to me, but they didn’t accept and he walked away. Then a man with a very loud voice came. I was afraid he was going to buy me, but he walked off. Then the grey-eyed man came back again and said: “I will give twenty-four to him.”
“Done,” said the salesman. “He’s a quality horse and if you want him for cab work, he’s a bargain.”
Half an hour later we set off for London, along country roads, until we came to that great city. There were streets to the right, and streets to the left. We went into one of the small streets, and then into a very narrow street, with small, old houses on one side, and stables on the other.
My new owner stopped at a house and whistled. The door opened, and a young woman, a little girl and boy, came out. They all looked at me. “Is he gentle, father ” “Yes, Dolly, as gentle as a kitten: you can pat him.”
Dolly, the little girl, patted my shoulder without fear. It felt good! They led me into a comfortable, clean stable, with lots of dry straw, and after a delicious meal I lay down to sleep.
