Karen Woolley had a dream and the only way she was going to make it come true was to purchase (购买) farmland. She and her husband, Glen, decided to buy a farm near Lakehurst, Ont., in 2000. With a barn (畜棚) built in the mid-1800s, as well as a farmhouse on the property, they were set to start purchasing animals that can be kept on a farm to fill the barn.
Karen's love of animals kept spilling over into (溢出) other parts of the barn; this is when she decided to share these critters (家畜) with the world, including city kids who were rarely around farm animals, and seniors in nursing homes who had been farmers themselves for many years.
Karen bought a vehicle and started taking her animals to visit various groups in the community. Off she went with her baby rabbits, chicks, ducks, and geese. With a low fenced-in area, people crowded around, curious to see and touch these lovely little creatures. People were even encouraged to pick up the critters to hold and touch as they admired nature in unusual locations.
Back on the farm, Karen's daughter, Fiona, is in charge of the heated hen house. She feeds and cleans their pens and makes sure they are comfortable until the heat of late spring arrives. Later, all are sent out into the field to enjoy the sweet grasses and sunshine. With Glen's help, fences are fixed, feeding stations are built and animals are fed regularly to keep everyone happy and the farm in working condition.
With her efforts coming along as planned, Karen continues to share her critters far and wide. She enjoys seeing people's reactions (反应) when a little duck is placed in the hands of young or old alike — it provides such satisfaction to a lady who wants to share her dream.

It was cloudy, and Hoi An's colours softened like a watercolour painting. Yet as I raised my camera, I wasn't imagining the beautiful past, but rather a questionable future.
Vietnam is in danger. The rising sea level is a huge threat to this coastal country. In less than 100 years much of southern Vietnam's Mekong Delta could go the way of Atlantis. With a dire forecast and limited resources, Vietnam doesn't have a lot of choices. In 2015, then Minister of the Environment Nguyen Minh Quang told the press that the country's best way was to plant more mangrove trees (红树林).
In Hoi An, a group called Mangroves for the Future (MFF) has awarded grants (拨款) to local conservation projects. MFF has been active in the Hoi An area since 2013, working to turn it into an eco-destination to help protect the mangrove forest that separates Hoi An from the sea.
That forest is also home to Cam Thanh, whose fishermen navigate (穿过) the flooded trees in traditional boats called thuy n thúng. Increasingly, thuy n thúng also carry tourists. MFF has helped Cam Thanh develop an ecotour programme for travellers to visit the forest with fishermen in their boats. The project increases both ecological awareness and local incomes, making the forest invaluable to Cam Thanh's economic future.
One of the challenges MFF faces in growing conservation efforts is that many Cam Thanh residents lack a sense of crisis. Locals are more concerned about keeping their way of life and feeding their families. The threat of environmental change is harder to take seriously.
I asked Hoi An residents whether mangroves were the solution to the sea-level crisis or just a stopgap (权宜之计). They were not willing to express their opinions very clearly, but all agreed that mangroves were part of the answer. It will be decades before anyone knows Vietnam's chances against the sea. I sincerely hope this beautiful place will still be attracting travellers — and their cameras — in 100 years.
28. What does the underlined word “dire” in paragraph 2 mean
A. Scientific. B. Detailed. C. Terrible. D. Latest.
29. What is MFF working on in Hoi An
A. Protecting the mangrove forest.
B. Saving fishermen from the flood.
C. Providing traditional boats for locals.
D. Raising money from local environmental groups.
30. What can we infer about MFF's project from paragraph 4
A. It has achieved a win-win situation.
B. It has made thuy n thúng world-famous.
C. It has made Cam Thanh more competitive.
D. It has caused serious damage to ocean ecosystems.
31. What is one challenge MMF is facing
A. Sea levels are rising out of control.
B. The project will take far longer than expected.
C. The local government doesn't offer enough support.
D. Local people haven't realised the seriousness of the problem.
D
Environmental management work between Rogart and Lairg has successfully been finished recently by Network Rail, on top of protecting nearby nesting hen harriers (筑巢的白尾鹞), a kind of bird of great European importance. The location of the work runs through the Strath Carnaig and Strath Fleet Moors SSSI (Site of Special Scientific Interest) and SPA (Special Protection Area). Both are special areas for supporting a population of breeding (繁殖的) hen harriers.
Work necessary for the safe operation of the railway needed to be done at the same time as the breeding season so the work could have disturbed breeding harriers. But Network Rail's ecology team worked with the Highland Raptor Study Group to conduct surveys of the hen harriers along the line.
“It was a pleasure to work with Network Rail this spring and summer carrying out surveys along the line between Rogart and Lairg,” said Brian Etheridge, from the Highland Raptor Study Group. “The priority was to look for breeding hen harriers, a threatened bird of prey (猛禽).”
Once breeding harriers had been identified, Network Rail put in place unique working procedures to reduce the influence on the birds. Measures were put in place to minimise (使减至最小) noise disturbance, through the use of battery-operated chainsaws (链锯), and time-limited working in any one area to keep noise to a minimum. Before any form of work could start, an additional survey was carried out to check on any nesting hen harriers in order to confirm whether the work was safe to continue. A camera was also installed to monitor nesting locations during the work to check that there were no signs of disturbance.
Thanks to the efforts of Network Rail, three hen harrier chicks grew healthily in their nests near the worksite. A real success story for these protected birds. Jonathan Callis, Senior Asset Engineer for Network Rail, said, “We are delighted the care, professionalism and cooperation demonstrated by everyone who contributed to this project has resulted in such a successful outcome for the birds.”
32. What can we learn from paragraph 1
A. Rogart and Lairg are home to most hen harriers in the wild.
B. The railway plays an important role in Europe.
C. Hen harriers are protected species in Europe.
D. The railway work has started recently.
33. What did the Highland Raptor Study Group do for Network Rail's project
A. They designed a new kind of chainsaw for Network Rail.
B. They surveyed the hen harriers nesting near the worksite.
C. They often monitored the working procedures of Network Rail.
D. They developed a practical way to change the breeding habits of hen harriers.
34. How did Network Rail's effort turn out
A. It was a real success. B. It was limited and dangerous.
C. It caused serious noise pollution.
D. It guaranteed the safety of workers.
35. What is the main purpose of the text
A. To stress the importance of bird species in ecosystems.
B. To show the influence of human activities on wildlife.
C. To raise public awareness of wildlife protection.
D. To report a wildlife protection event.
第二节(共5小题;每小题2分,满分10分)
根据短文内容,从短文后的选项中选出能填入空白处的最佳选项。选项中有两项为多余选项。
Roadkill is a serious problem in the world. 36 Just in the U. S., wildlife causes more than a million car accidents per year. For many species, it is the main cause of death. Even worse, major roads can split up (分开) animal populations. That makes it much harder for many animals to find food and a mate.
37 Highway crossings for animals have become more common. There are many types of crossings. They depend on the species that need to cross and also depend on the geographic features of the land. Some of the most common are bridges, overpasses and tunnels. The crossings reduce the number of crashes and save animals.
Wildlife bridges are usually covered in vegetation (植被). 38 Often fences are placed on the side of the road to direct wildlife toward the crossing.
Wildlife crossings began in France in the 1950s but really took off in the Netherlands. 39 The Dutch built the world's longest animal crossing, the Natuurbrug Zanderij Crailoo. It is more than 0.8 kilometers long. Wildlife crossings can also be found in Australia, Canada and other parts of the world. 40 Wildlife bridges and tunnels began in the U. S. less than 20 years ago. One of the earliest U.S. crossings was in Davis, California.
A. More than 600 crossings have been built there.
B. Cars kill more than a million animals every day.
C. Some types of wildlife crossings can be expensive to build.
D. In the United States, the idea took a little longer to catch on.
E. People are beginning to understand how dangerous this can be.
F. The purpose is to make them look natural and encourage animals to use them.
G. Auto accidents were one of the main causes, according to a government report.
