探究点1 情态动词表示推测
1.must
(1)must 表推测时,意思是“一定;准是”,语气肯定,有把握。
He must be American.他一定是个美国人。
John must go to Shanghai with his father.约翰一定是跟他父亲一起去上海了。
(2)must表推测只能用于肯定句中,而表示“一定不”时,要用can't; 询问可能性时,用can。
He must know my telephone number.他一定知道我的电话号码。
He can't know my telephone number.他不可能知道我的电话号码。
Can he know my telephone number? 他有可能知道我的电话号码吗?
(3)must表推测时的句型
“must+动词原形”表示对现在情况的推测。
“must+be+动词-ing形式”表示对正在发生的情况的推测。
“must+have+动词-ed形式”表示对过去情况的推测。
注意:must表示推测时很少用于将来的情况。
He must come tomorrow.(×)
It's certain/I'm sure that he will come tomorrow.(√)
(4)在含有must的反义疑问句中,疑问部分的助动词根据实际情况而定。
He must be an actor, isn't he?他一定是个演员,对吗?
She must have met a fairy, hasn't she? 她一定遇到仙女了,是吗?
It must have rained last night, didn't it? 昨晚一定下雨了,是不是?
2.can/can't
(1)can表推测时,往往用于否定句或疑问句中;can't “一定不;不可能”,语气很肯定。
can在疑问句中意思是“会;可能” 。
He can't go to school today.=It is impossible that he goes to school today.他今天一
定没去上学。
Can the news be true?这消息是真的吗?
(2)can/can't 表推测时的句型
“can/can't +动词原形”表示对现在或将来情况的推测。
“can/can't +be+动词-ing形式”表示对正在发生的情况的推测。
“can/can't +have+动词-ed形式”表示对过去情况的推测。
(3)在含有can't 的反义疑问句中,疑问部分的助动词根据实际情况而定。
He can't be a teacher, is he? 他不可能是教师,对吗?
She can't have finished her homework, has she? 她一定没有完成家庭作业,是不是?
John can't have gone swimming yesterday, did he?昨天约翰一定没去游泳,对吗?
3.may和might
(1)may、 might 表推测时,意思是“可能;也许”, 语气上不太肯定。
He may/might be in his office now.=It is possible that he is in his office.他现在可能
在办公室。
注意:might可以用作may的过去式,在语气上比may更委婉,表示的可能性更小。
(2)may、 might表推测时,可以用于否定句,意思是“可能不;也许不”,但不用于疑问
句。
He may/might not come back forever.他也许永远不回来了。
It may/might not snow tonight.今天晚上可能不会下雪。
(3)may/might表推测时的句型
“may/might+动词原形”表示对现在或将来情况的推测。
“may/might+be+动词-ing形式”表示对正在发生的情况的推测。

探究点2 should、 could和 would的用法
1.should的基本用法
(1)(与ought to同义)表示劝告、建议、命令等。
You should wash your hands first.你应该先洗手。
We should learn how to use computers.我们应该学会如何使用电脑。
(2)表示惊愕、遗憾、出乎意料等情感。
I find it astonishing that he should be so rude to you.他竟然对你这样无礼,真令人
吃惊。
2.could的基本用法
(1)表示过去的能力。
When he was young, he could sing very well.他年轻时,歌唱得很好。
(2)表示请求。
在这种语境下,用could比用can语气更显委婉、客气。could此时和can没有时间上的差别,
它主要用于疑问句,不用于肯定句,因此回答时要改用can。
—Could I come here again tomorrow?我明天还能来这里吗?
—Yes, you can.(No,I'm afraid not.)是的,可以。(不,恐怕不行。)
3.would的基本用法
(1)表示请求、建议,比will委婉,多用于第二人称。
—Would you like a cup of tea? 来杯茶怎么样?

(2)表示过去的习惯性动作或某种倾向。
We would play badminton on Sundays.以前我们总是在星期天打羽毛球。

1.could have done意为“本来可能;本来可以”,表示过去有能力或有可能干某事,而由于
某种原因未做成,常含有责备、惋惜、遗憾等意味。
She could have passed the college entrance examination, but she was too careless.她

2.should/ought to have done 意为“本来应该”,表示过去应该做或值得做的事情而没有
做到,含有后悔、埋怨、责备等意味。该结构的否定式shouldn't/ought not to have done
则表示过去做了不应该做的事,意为“本来不应该……却……”。
He shouldn't have said that.他本不该那样说的。
3.would have done 意为“本来想干某事(但当时没干)”。
I would have attended your wedding party, but I had too many things to do at that
