Lead in Students are required to answer the questions based on the observation of title and picture. 1. What might be the genre of this passage 2. Why does the author describe his life as remarkable 3. In the picture, why did he left some papers on the floor (Intention: Lead in part is intended to activate the schema and help predict what might be talked about in the passage, which help promote students’ thinking quality.) Activity 1 Read to structurize 1. Students are asked to read the article and summarize the main idea of each paragraph. Para 1: the first ever performance of Symphony No.9 Para 2: Beethoven’s life journey before his late twenties Para 3: Beethoven’s attitudes in the face of the loss of hearing Para 4: Introduction to Symphony No.9 Para 5: Beethoven’s reputation and achievements 2. Students are required to find the transitional sentences in the passage and explain how they link two paragraphs. 1. Symphony No.9 was Beethoven’s last major piece of music in a vast body of works written throughout his remarkable life 2. The loss of his hearing deeply depressed Beethoven. 3. Since that day, Beethoven’s Symphony No.9 has become one of the most famous and treasured pieces in the history of classical music. 4. As Beethoven’s last great work, his Symphony No.9 was also a grand finale to his life. 3. Students are led to analyse the order of organising the passage, introducing the writing technique “flash back” and figure out the reason of describing the performance of Symphony No.9 in the first paragraph. Q1: What might be the order of organising the passage Is it exactly the order of time Q2: Why does the author put the performance of Symphony No.9 in the first paragraph (Intention: Activity 1 is intended to instruct students to analyse the structure of the passage, learn how to use the transitional sentences to link two different paragraphs, and grasp the special writing technique “flash back” of writing a biography, which could help strengthen students’ language ability and thinking quality.) Activity 2 Read to understand Beethoven’s life journey 1. Students are required to read paragraph 2 and 3 to fill in the flow chart about Beethoven’s life journey. 2. Q1: How did he overcome the loss of hearing Q2: What makes his life remarkable (Intention: Activity 2 is intended to instruct students to understand the life journey of Beethoven and learn how he overcome the difficulties.) Activity 3 Read to appreciate the Symphony 9 1. Students are led to read paragraph 4 and fill in the chart helping appreciate the Symphony 9. 2. Students are able to appreciate the fourth movement of Symphony No.9 and enjoy the different variations of Beethoven’s work. (Intention: Activity 3 is intended to lead the students to understand the features of different movements together with the reflection of Beethoven’s feelings and conditions and learn how to describing a piece of music, cultivating students language ability, and the ability to appreciate the beauty of music .) Activity 4 Critical thinking Students are required to find out Beethoven’s qualities as a musician by adding nouns to the following chart. Students are required to answer the question: What do you think makes a great musician Make a list of the qualities and explain why they are important. (Intention: Activity 4 is intended to guide students to analyse what makes a great musician and explain the reasons, which stimulate students’ thinking quality.) Activity 5 Read to apply Students are required to contribute to the “my hero” column in the magazine “teens”. They are required to introduce Beethoven as their hero. (80 words) Homework 1. Finish and polish the composition. 2. work in groups and find another musician you are interested in most and make a presentation in the next class.
