教学目标
By the end of this class, students will be able to: 1. grasp some key words and phrases: pressure, compete, opinion, skill, typical, cut out, continue, compare, compare…with, crazy, push, development, cause, usual etc; 2. guess the meanings of unknown words according to the context and find out the main ideas and collect opinions by using proper reading strategies; 3. talk about one’s pressure and give suggestions to relax; 4. realize we should deal with pressure correctly and balance study and life.

教学重点: 1. Understand the passage clearly and guess the meanings of the key words.
2. Find out the main ideas of different paragraphs and collect opinions of different people through reading by using proper reading strategies
教学难点: 1. Guess the meanings of the key words.
2. Sum up the opinions and talk about stress and ways to relax.
教学过程
Step 1 Greetings Welcome the students and show the title and section of this class: Unit4 Why don’t you talk to your parents (Section B 2a-2e) Tell students the learning objectives of this class. The objectives are mainly from three parts: knowledge, strategy and emotion. By the end of this class, students will be able to: 1. grasp some key words and phrases: pressure, compete, opinion, skill, typical, cut out, continue, compare, compare…with, crazy, push, development, cause, usual etc; 2. guess the meanings of unknown words according to the context and find out the main ideas and collect opinions by using proper reading strategies; 3. talk about one’s pressure and give suggestions to relax 4. realize we should deal with pressure correctly and balance study and life. Step 2 Leading-in There are some after-school activities. Ask students: What activities do you and your classmates usually do And give some advice about activities, such as playing sports, doing one’s homework, take after-school classes and so on. Check the activities they usually do. Check the after-school activities you and your classmates usually do. ____ do homework ____ use the Internet ____ have after-school lessons ____ hang out with friends ____ watch movies ____ play sports or exercise Ask some students to say their choices and problems. Show a picture of a stressful student and let students think about their study life with so much pressure. Ask students some questions: Is teenagers’ life always this hard, or is it just when you are a Chinese student
How is the life of students in other countries, like American teenagers
Do they have the similar stressful life Let students read an article to find more information. Step 3 Reading Fast reading Task 1: Skim the article and answer the questions. Work on 2b. First, read the questions and make sure students know the meanings of all the questions. Give students 2 minutes to read the passage quickly and find the answers to the questions. Check the answers with the class. 1) .What is the common problem for Chinese and American families The common problem for Chinese and American families is that children have too many after-school activities which cause them to be stressed. 2). Who gives their opinions about the problems Cathy Taylor (a mother with three children), Linda Miller (a mother with three children) and Dr. Alice Green (a doctor) give their opinions about the problem. Task 2: Read quickly and match the main idea with each paragraph. Reading strategy: Get the main idea of each paragraph according to the topic sentence. (2 minutes) 1.Life for Cathy Taylor’s three children is very busy. 2.Doctors say too much pressure is not good for a child’s development. 3.Chinese children are busier on weekends than weekdays these days. 4.Linda Miller knows all about such stress. Match them correctly and sum up the main idea of each paragraph. Read out the key points together: Present situation in China, Present situation in America and Cathy’s opinion, Linda Miller’s opinion and Doctors’ advice. Task 3: Look at the words in bold in the article. Try to guess their meanings. Give students 2 minutes to match them with the meanings below. Give some advice on how to do it: When reading something for the first time, you needn’t worry about words you don’t know. Use the context to help you guess the meaning. 1. Keeps on happening ______________ 2. Physical exercise and practice of skills_________ 3. Worries about things at home, school or work_________ 4. Usual or common _________ 5. Try to be the best or the first to finish something __________ 6. Getting better or bigger ___________ 7. Looking for differences and similarities between things_______ Find the words in bold and read the context, write down the answers and check them with the whole class. Then read the words and their meanings aloud. Careful reading: (reading for better understanding) Task 1: Read the passage again and answer these questions below. 1.Read paragraph 1 carefully and answer: 1)What’s the purpose(目的) of the students learning exam skills 2)What are other students doing 2.Read the article again and answer the following questions. And check the answers together. 1) Does Cathy Taylor think it’s important for kids to join after-school activities 2) Does Linda Miller agree with Cathy What’s her opinion 3) Does Dr. Green agree with Cathy or Linda What does she say 4)What’s the author’s attitude according to the passage Why do you think so (difficult problem, aims to find the author’s opinion) However, the tired children don’t get home until after 7:00 p.m. They have a quick dinner, and then it’s time for homework. Task 2:Read for detailed information. Tell Students to read paragraph 2 carefully and fill in the blanks. Check the answers. Read paragraph 3 carefully and fill in the blanks. Check the answers. Read paragraph 4 carefully and fill in the blanks. Check the answers. Read the key sentence to grasp the opinions: ... be good for the children’s future. Parents should let their kids be kids. It’s more important to have happy children than successful children. Task 3: Make a mind-map to sum up the structure of the passage. Read the passage quickly and try to recall the structure. Think about the content of each paragraph and list the main ideas or the key words for different opinions. Make a mind-map. (Follow the teacher carefully and try to say the sentences by themselves without books.) Post-reading Talk about their own opinions after reading the article. Discuss the questions with their partners. Give students 2 minutes to finish this task. 1.What do you think of after-school activities (Are they good or bad for your self-development ) What should you do to relax (Maybe you can listen to music to relax, or just take a good sleep to keep active. And also, you can enjoy some nice food, especially some dessert to make you feel happy.) Share the answers with the whole class. 1.What do you think of after-school activities In my opinion, if the kid really likes the activity such as basketball, he can go to these classes. They may have some fun as well as some skills. I don’t agree that some parents push the kids to take these activities. 2. What should you do to relax There are a lot of ways to relax. I’d like to listen to music or play sports to relax. But my friend, Eric would like to sleep a lot and eat some nice food. Step 4: Emotional education At the end of the class, share a short video with students and let them know the pressure is not totally harmful to them. Encourage students to learn to deal with stress and relax themselves. Even though we have so many after-class activities to take and life is full of pressure for us , we should still learn to relax and deal with the stress . Be brave to face the stress and learn to balance work and relaxation. (Especially, nowadays we have double reduction policy! You may have enough time to think for yourselves and find what you like and what you are talented in. ) Keep on working hard and I believe you all will have a happier and better future! Step 5: Summary Make a summary of this class and show the key points to students. Key words and phrases: pressure, stress, compete, opinion, skill, typical, push, continue, compare, crazy, development, cause; compare…with, cut out, send ...to, think for etc. Sentence structures: People should/shouldn’t... ...so that... She thinks.../believes... I agree/don’t agree with.../that... Learning strategies: Guess unknown words according to the context. Get the main idea of each paragraph according to the topic sentence. Step 6: Homework 1. Finish the worksheet. 2. Review the key words and phrases we have learned this class, and try to retell the opinions from different people. 3. Write a diary to express your stress and think about some proper ways you will take to make yourself relaxed.
