Carhenge. Floralis Genérica. Traffic Light Tree. Hand of the Desert — these are four unusual monuments from around the world you might like to visit.
Carhenge
Carhenge is in Alliance, Nebraska (USA). As the name suggests, it has a lot in common with Stonehenge, the famous stone circle on Salisbury Plain. But while Stonehenge was built with stones, Carhenge was created with cars. The monument was made in 1987 by a local artist Jim Reinders and his family. He used old cars and even an ambulance. At first, the people of Alliance didn’t like it, but they soon changed their minds after it became popular with tourists, who brought lots of money to the town.

Floralis Genérica is a massive statue of a flower. It stands in a pool of water in front of the National Museum of Fine Arts in Buenos Aires, Argentina. Eduardo Catalano, a native of Argentina, gave the statue as a gift to the city in 2002. Every morning, the flower opens. Ask anyone who has seen it and they’ll tell you that watching it open is an unforgettable sight. In fact, many people believe it is one of the most beautiful statues in the world.
Traffic Light Tree
The Traffic Light Tree is situated at Heron Quay, in one of London’s financial districts. The tree has 75 sets of traffic lights. It was created by French artist, Pierre Vivant, and was installed in 1998. A computer controls the lights, which are turned on and off randomly. The roundabout where the tree is was voted the most popular roundabout in the UK in a recent survey.
Mano del Desierto (Hand of the Desert)
The Hand of the Desert is in the Atacama Desert in Chile. The sculpture was designed by the Chilean sculptor Mario Irarrazabal. From a distance, it looks as if there’s a giant in the sand who has stuck his hand out of the ground.

Consumers increasingly use smartwatches and other wearable devices to measure their heart rates and rhythm during exercise and for overall health monitoring. However, those measurements may be less accurate in people with darker skin tones (肤色), according to a study.
The findings are based on a systematic review of 10 previously published studies involving a total of 469 participants. The study is the first to pool data from many studies to specifically examine how skin tones may affect the accuracy of heart data in wearables.
After screening 622 scientific papers, the researchers identified 10 studies that reported the heart rate and rhythm data for consumer wearable technology according to a participant’s skin tone. Of those studies, they found that heart rate measurements were significantly less accurate in darker-skinned individuals compared with either lighter-skinned individuals or measurements from proven devices, such as chest strap monitors or electrocardiograms (心电图). One study reported that although there was no difference in heart rate accuracy, wearable devices recorded significantly fewer data points for people with darker skin.
Most wearables detect the heart rate and rhythm by aiming a beam of light at the wrist and then detecting how much light is absorbed. Greater light absorption indicates a greater volume of blood flowing through the veins (静脉) under the skin. The study results suggest that this signaling process might not work well in darker skin that contains more melanin (黑色素), which absorbs light.
In addition to the rising use of wearables to monitor physical activity and sleep patterns, interest in the use of consumer wearables for medical research and even early detection of heart problems has increased in recent years.
The study emphasizes the importance of ensuring that technology meets the needs of diverse populations, especially when it’s intended to improve health. “It’s urgent to explore alternative options to collect reliable data from all users. There is some evidence to suggest that certain light, particularly green light, is more accurate in people across all skin tones,” Daniel Koerber, the study’s co-lead author, said.
8.How did researchers conduct research
A.They surveyed wearable device users. B.They took advantage of existing data.
C.They communicated with professionals. D.They tested wearable devices on the market.
9.How do most wearables detect users’ heart rates
A.By detecting melanin levels in users’ skin.
B.By observing users’ breathing rates and blood pressure.
C.By measuring the speed of the blood flow in users’ veins.
D.By detecting the amount of light absorbed by users’ wrists.
10.Which of the following statements about wearables may Daniel Koerber agree with
A.They require improvement. B.They face severe competition.
C.They are a double-edged sword. D.They are a kind of marketing trick.
11.What can be the best title for the text
A.How is your heart rate detected properly
B.How accurate is the heart data from your smartwatch
C.What challenge does future wearable technology face
D.How may skin tones affect the accuracy of heart data in wearables
D
You can’t see it, smell it, or hear it, and people disagree on how precisely to define it, or where exactly it comes from. It isn’t a school subject or an academic discipline, but it can be learned. It is a quality that is required of artists, but it is also present in the lives of scientists and entrepreneurs. All of us benefit from it and we succeed mentally and spiritually when we are able to handle it. It is a delicate thing, easily wiped out; in fact, it blossoms most fully when people are playful and childlike. Meanwhile, it works best in meeting with deep knowledge and expertise.
This mysterious—but teachable—quality is creativity, the subject of a recently-published report by Durham Commission on Creativity and Education. The report concludes that creativity should not exist in the school curriculum only as it relates to drama, music, art and other obviously creative subjects, but that creative thinking ought to run through all of school life, infusing (充满) the way humanities and natural sciences are learned.
Nevertheless, it is arts subjects through which creativity can most obviously be promoted. The value placed on them by the independent education is clear. One only has to look at the remarkable arts facilities at Britain’ stop private schools to understand this. But in the state education the extreme focus on English, maths and science threatens to destroy arts subjects; meanwhile, reduced school budgets mean decreasing extracurricular activities.
This difference between state and private education is a matter of social justice. It is simply wrong and unfair that most children have a small part of the access to choirs, art studios and drama that their more privileged peers enjoy. As lives are affected by any number of threatening challenges—climate crisis, automation in the workplace—humans are going to need creative thinking more than ever. For all of our sakes, creativity in education, and for all, must become a priority.
12.What is the primary function of the first paragraph in the passage
A.It offers a historical overview of creative thinking.
B.It introduces the precise definition and benefits of creativity.
C.It guides the reader on to the topic of creativity in education.
D.It provides evidence for the importance of science education.
13.What is the conclusion of a recently-published report
A.Natural sciences should be learned the way humanities courses are.
B.Growth of creativity should run through the entire school curriculum.
C.Art courses should be made required for all students,
D.Students should learn more obviously creative subjects.
14.What do we learn about the private schools in the UK
A.They encourage extracurricular activities.
B.They attach great importance to arts education.
C.They prioritize arts subjects over maths and sciences.
D.They meet the needs of students from different family backgrounds.
15.What should be done to meet the future challenges
A.Increasing government investment in school education.
B.Narrowing the existing gap between the rich and the poor.
C.Providing all children with equal access to arts education.
D.Focusing on meeting the needs of under-privileged students.

Get Better at Saying No
When rejecting a request, “no” is a short, simple word that can cause anxiety for the person trying to say it. The following strategies can help you get better at saying no.
Be intentional about what you communicate.
16 Sure, but as psychologist Vanessa Bohns points out, only saying a “no” is often pretty uncomfortable for the asker. Instead, she advises communicating three things: “It’s not because of me, it’s not because of you, and it’s not because of us.” One way to do that is by thanking people for thinking of you. 17 Then, follow up with a short explanation: “I wish I could, but I just don’t have the time right now.” That helps make it clear that your “no” isn’t a poor reflection of your own character; it’s not the other person; and it’s not a disapproval of the relationship, Bohns says.
Have a planned phrase for more informal encounters.
Not every situation, of course, calls for such a thoughtful approach. Think through times when you’ve gotten stressed over delivering a quick “no”, and then brainstorm phrases you could use in the future. Bohns, for example, is often asked to donate to some cause or another as she checks out at the grocery store. 18 “It’s true, and it’s a way of saying, essentially, that I’m still a good person,” she says. 19
There’s always that one guy who won’t take “no” for an answer. If someone is applying too much pressure, adopt what psychologist Ellen Hendriksen describes as the broken-record technique. 20 Occasionally, the asker will get annoyed, but usually after repeating yourself two or three times, even the most persistent (执着的) people will get the message.
A.She says no directly.
B.That is, stick to your answer.
C.Adopt the broken-record technique.
D.It’s not worth repeating your request again and again.
E.She now has a go-to response: “I already donated this year.”
F.You might hear that “no” is a convenient word for declining requests.
G.This makes them relieved that they didn’t do anything wrong by asking.

As a child, I distinctly remembered watching some PBS cartoon character get glasses; the poor girl was made fun of by her peers when playing basketball. I silently thanked God for my good eyesight — but I spoke too soon.
When I entered the sixth grade, I could no longer see writing on the whiteboard clearly. So, I received my first pair of glasses. I only wore them in the classroom, and didn’t mind them too much. Self-image was not important for the then little girl.
Entering my freshman year in high school, I began to miss basketball shots in games — more so than usual. My eyes were re-examined, and the doctor determined that my eyesight had become worse. I would either have to wear glasses full time, or try contacts Being the passionate athlete I was, I bypassed the annoyance of glasses and began to wear contacts. My entire world was transformed. Trees actually had leaves. The faces around me radiated individual expressions. And I could see the basket a whole lot better now. I was overjoyed with my newfound sight — and appearance.
When my senior year came along, I began to have trouble with my right eye. It got to the point where whenever I wore my contacts, my right eye would suffer an intolerable, stabbing pain, forcing me to take the contacts out. It was physically impossible to wear them. I would be in the doctor’s office at least three times a month, trying to solve the mystery of the problem with my eye.
I was beginning to get frustrated. I didn’t mind wearing my glasses to see the board in school, but all the time At dances At basketball games No. That was not okay with me. I couldn’t imagine how I would be laughed at by my peers on the court. I hoped and prayed the doctor would cure my illness soon. That hope was soon crushed. No medicine had worked, and there was nothing left to try. He advised that I wear my glasses full time. But I couldn’t hate my glasses more.

根据第一段“It is a delicate thing, easily wiped out; in fact, it blossoms most fully when people are playful and childlike. Meanwhile, it works best in meeting with deep knowledge and expertise.(这是一个微妙的东西,很容易被消灭;事实上,当人们充满童趣和童心时,它才会绽放得最灿烂。同时,它在与渊博的知识和专业知识会面时效果最好。)”和第二段“This mysterious—but teachable—quality is creativity, the subject of a recently-published report by Durham Commission on Creativity and Education.(这种神秘但可教的品质就是创造力,这是达勒姆创新与教育委员会最近发表的一份报告的主题。)”
根据第二段“The report concludes that creativity should not exist in the school curriculum only as it relates to drama, music, art and other obviously creative subjects, but that creative thinking ought to run through all of school life, infusing (充满) the way humanities and natural sciences are learned.(报告的结论是,创造力不应该只存在于学校课程中,因为它与戏剧、音乐、艺术和其他明显具有创造性的学科有关,而应该贯穿整个学校生活,融入人文科学和自然科学的学习方式。)”

For all of our sakes, creativity in education, and for all, must become a priority.(大多数孩子只有一小部分机会去唱诗班、艺术工作室和戏剧表演,这是完全错误和不公平的。
16.空后“Sure, but as psychologist Vanessa Bohns points out, only saying a “no” is often pretty uncomfortable for the asker. (当然,但正如心理学家Vanessa Bohns指出的那样,只说“不”通常会让请求者感到很不舒服)”说明只说“不”通常会让请求者感到很不舒服,but表转折,因此空格处应该说一般会觉得说“不”是可以的,F选项“You might hear that “no” is a convenient word for declining requests.(你可能听说“no”是一个用来拒绝请求的方便词)”说明了“不”是一个用来拒绝请求的方便词,因此引起下文,符合语境,故选F。
17.空前“One way to do that is by thanking people for thinking of you. (其中一个方法就是感谢别人想到你了)”说明了感谢别人想到你这种方法,空格处应该说这么做的好处,G选项“This makes them relieved that they didn’t do anything wrong by asking. (这让他们松了一口气,因为他们没有因为要求你而做错任何事)”说明了感谢别人想到你这种方法的好处,因此承接上文,符合语境,故选G。
18.空前“Bohns, for example, is often asked to donate to some cause or another as she checks out at the grocery store. (例如,当Bohns在杂货店结账时,她经常被要求为这样或那样的事业捐款。)”举出了Bohns被要求捐款的例子,空格处应该说她的回答,E选项“She now has a go-to response: “I already donated this year.” (现在,她的回答是:“我今年已经捐过了。”)”说明的是她的回答,且其中的donate和前面的donate相一致,因此承接上文,符合语境,故选E。
19.空格处是本段小标题,由空后的“If someone is applying too much pressure, adopt what psychologist Ellen Hendriksen describes as the broken-record technique. (如果有人给你的压力太大,那就采用心理学家Ellen Hendriksen所说的“破纪录法”)”可知,本段主要讲的是采用“破纪录法”,因此C选项“Adopt the broken-record technique. (采用打破记录的技巧)”概括了本段主要内容,可作为小标题,故选C。
20.空前“If someone is applying too much pressure, adopt what psychologist Ellen Hendriksen describes as the broken-record technique. (如果有人给你的压力太大,那就采用心理学家Ellen Hendriksen所说的“破纪录法”)”提出了“破纪录法”,空格处应该解释这是一种什么方法,这种方法具体的做法是什么,B选项“That is, stick to your answer. (也就是说,坚持你的答案)”解释了前面这种技巧的具体做法,因此承接上文,符合语境,故选B。

第二节(满分25分)
阅读下面材料, 根据其内容和所给段落开头语续写两段, 使之构成一篇完整的短文。

Whenever someone walked up to me, I would immediately be seized by embarrassment. Self-conscious about the ugly thing covering my eyes, I constantly removed the glasses from my face. My self-image for a girl at that age was too important. I hated the way my glasses fogged up in the cold, or how they were pushed crooked whenever someone gave me a hug. I felt worthless in them. So, I began to wear my glasses as little as possible. I accepted missing shots in basketball practices and failing in the games, coupled with the consequential headaches and worsening sight. Myself-confidence hit a new low.
However, a kind girl named Anne also with glasses in the basketball team made me feel better. “You are beautiful, girl, with or without the glasses,” Anne approached me one day after practice. As a girl carrying the same burden, Anne didn’t let wearing glasses get in the way of her beauty from inside and out. She always took me to practices, games and even school dances, glowing with confidence. It hit me then that it wasn’t my schoolmates who were ridiculing me. I was the one passing judgement on myself. I learned to be comfortable in my glasses on and off the court, and I can see myself clearly now.
