Although I was the class clown at school, there’s an introverted (内向的) side to my personality. That’s because I have a neurological (神经系统的) condition that makes it hard for my brain to process visual information. Words swim on the page for me. I wanted to learn how to read but I couldn’t.
In primary school, I didn’t talk to any teachers or family about this. I was clever at hiding it. When I had to write anything down, I guessed, forming what I hoped was the right words. I became good at learning by heart.
When I started secondary school, a student in class made me stand on a chair and read. It was so humiliating that I developed a bad stutter (口吃). I continued to fall through the net, emotionally and educationally. The only thing I loved was practical biology. I wanted to be a doctor.
Then I left school and joined the military. I was determined to be a medic and trained hard. But things unraveled (揭开) when I did a course in pre-hospital emergency care. I passed all my practical exams, preparing for them by watching others. The problem was the written exam. I was so embarrassed but had to tell the examining doctor that I couldn’t read. He urged me to get back into education. I was 34.
I applied to do a medical degree at the Open University (OU). It was back to basics on the course. I knew the alphabet and some words, but my vocabulary was small. I paid for a tutor, who worked with me every week, teaching me to understand words through pictures.
It took me nine years to get that degree. Now, aged 47, I’m an ambassador for the OU, winning an award for embracing education so late in life. I now teach pre-hospital emergency care to medical school students. I also teach children and adults with learning difficulties because I want to give others the chances I had.
I still struggle to read a menu if I’m not wearing my special glasses, but luckily there’s always someone around to lend me a hand. I look back and wonder how many other people have struggled with education and where they are now. I’m proof that no one should be discounted (忽视), ever.

The last decade saw the rise of the field of “plant neurobiology (植物神经生物学)”. That debatable field is based on the idea that plants — which do not possess brains — handle information in ways similar to complicated animal nervous systems. This thinking implies that plants could feel happiness or sorrow or pain, make intentional decisions and even possess consciousness. But the chances of that are “effectively zero”. “There’s nothing in the plant comparable to the complexity of the animal brain,” says Taiz, from the University of California, Santa Cruz.
Some plants are capable of complicated behaviors. For example, wounded leaves can send warning signals to other parts of the plant. But plants perform these with equipment that’s very different from the nervous systems of animals, no brain required, Taiz argues. He and colleagues point out methodological faults in some of the studies that claim plants have brain-like command centers and animal-like nerve cells. But beyond the debate over how these studies are conducted, Taiz’s team argues that plant consciousness doesn’t even make sense from an evolutionary point of view.
“Complicated animal brains advanced in part to help a living being catch a meal and avoid becoming one,” Taiz says. “But plants are rooted to the ground and rely on sunlight for energy, an inactive lifestyle that doesn’t require quick thinking or outsmarting a predator (捕食者) — or the energetically expensive nervous systems that enable those behaviors.” “What use would consciousness be to a plant ” Taiz asks. “If a plant worried and suffered when faced with a threat, it would be wasting so much energy that it wouldn’t have any left to do anything about that threat,” Taiz says. “Furthermore, plants have plenty to do without having to be conscious, too. With sunlight, carbon dioxide and water, plants create the compounds that sustain much of the rest of life on Earth,” Taiz points out. “Isn’t that enough ”

Twenty years ago, the idea of sharing our lives so openly with the world was unheard of. However, for young people today it is considered completely normal to share pictures of their lives and interact online every day. Fans of social media point out that the world has never been so connected as it has allowed people to make friends, learn about the world and celebrate life.
However, many people have concerns about the effects of this new way of living particularly around the amount and type of information that is shared so openly. Now researchers have found that too much time on social media may indeed have some negative effects. They measured people’s attitudes and feelings before and after browsing(浏览) social media sites. They found that the more time people spent on social media, the more unhappy they became.
There are a number of reasons for this. When browsing social media, people often see photographs and stories showing beautiful holidays, fun parties and fashionable clothes. People rarely post negative stories or bad pictures, so it can be misleading. For those looking at these pictures and comparing them to their own lives, they can end up feeling sad and depressed. They might think their lives are worse in comparison. Even for those people who post positive stories and pictures, they too can feel stressed and worried. The number of “likes” and comments on their posts can make them anxious about their popularity. Of course, there is also the problem of “cyber bullying(网络欺凌)” where people become victims of bullying online when others make negative or cruel comments about them.
The reality is that social media is a part of modern life and it is not going to go away. This research shows us that it is important to find a balance between our online and offline lives. We don’t have to disconnect from the Internet to live a happy life, but we should realise that the pictures we see and stories we read are only part of a bigger picture. If we can do that, we can protect ourselves and enjoy our lives.
51.According to Paragraph 1, social media help people to ______.
A.interact off line easily B.kill time
C.share highlights of life D.discover that the continents are connected
52.What idea does the writer convey in Paragraph 2

B.Browsing social media certainly has negative consequences.
C.Spending too much time on social media can have negative effects.
D.Browsing social media is definitely not fun.
53.Why does browsing social media sometimes make people depressed
A.Because people get upset after comparing the good lives in other people’s posts.
B.Because they always worry about the number of “likes”.
C.Because of the existence of “cyber bullying”.
D.Because other people always post negative stories.
54.What does the underlined part in the last paragraph probably mean
A.The pictures we see are only part of the picture.
B.None of the stories we read on the Internet are true.
C.In order to live a happy life, we should browse more pictures.
D.What we see or read on the Internet is not entirely representative of the real world.
55.What is the writer’s purpose in writing this passage
A.To offer some tips on using social media.
B.To show the highs and lows of social media.
C.To remind us about the “cyber bullying”.
D.To share his experience with social media.

For most of her life, Suanne Laqueur’s passion for storytelling was shown on the dance floor.
Although Laqueur began writing at a young age, dancing always took center stage. She majored in dance and theater at Alfred University and taught at her mother’s dance studio in Croton-on-Hudson, New York, for years. But when her mother was ready to retire and an opportunity opened for Laqueur to take over the studio, she realized she had no interest in taking on the business side of her art: “Owning a studio is a lot of work — financially, logistically. I love the teaching, the choreographing (编舞), the staging, but I didn’t want to own it.”
Yet Laqueur’s disinterest in running the studio changed when she became a self-published author. In the fall of 2013, she decided to pursue self-publishing as a way of sharing her first completed novel with friends and family. During the process, she realized that following her true passion-telling stories through writing — made the business of the art worthwhile, and owning that business meant she could direct her writing career however she chose.
Starting with her second self-published novel, she began investing more time in marketing and building her audience. Her investment paid off. Since 2014, Laqueur, now 49, has self-published six novels, which collectively have hundreds of ratings and reviews on Goodreads. Gradually, readers pay more attention to her works. In particular, her 2016 novel An Exaltation of Larks stole the show and won the grand prize at the 25th Annual Writer’s Digest Self-Published Book Awards, topping more than 2, 300 entries.
“You have to write the most truthful story to you, and I think self-publishing allows that freedom,” she says, “If you work with traditional publishing, it’s more about what’s marketable. There are trade-offs, which everyone will tell you, but by self-publishing I have control of the book, I have control of the story, and I’m cool with that.”
56.Why didn’t Laqueur take over her mother’s studio (no more than 10 words)
57.What made Laqueur change her attitude to business (no more than 5 words)
58.What does the underlined part “stole the show” mean in paragraph 4 (no more than 3 words)

46.The rise of “plant neurobiology” indicates that ________.
A.It is widely recognized that plants have brains and nervous systems.
B.Scientists proved that plants can handle information like animals.
C.Certain scientists believe that plants may possess consciousness.
D.The science community believes in the promising future of studying it.
47.What is probably Linchol Taiz’s opinion concerning plants
A.Plants possess animal-like nervous systems.
B.Plants perform complicated behaviors with brains.
C.It is not understandable that plants have consciousness.
D.It is necessary for plants to develop brains for survival.
48.What does the underlined “one” in Paragraph 3 refer to
A.A predator. B.A living being. C.An inactive plant. D.A meal.
49.What is the purpose of Taiz’s words in Paragraph 3
A.To explain a rule. B.To clarify a concept.
C.To support an argument. D.To present a fact.
50.In which section of a magazine may this text appear
A.Entertainment. B.Life. C.Education. D.Science.
根据第一段中的“The last decade saw the rise of the field of ‘plant neurobiology(植物神经生物学)’. That debatable field is based on the idea that plants — which do not possess brains — handle information in ways similar to complicated animal nervous systems. This thinking implies that plants could feel happiness or sorrow or pain, make intentional decisions and even possess consciousness.(过去的十年见证‘植物神经生物学’领域的兴起。这个有争议的领域基于这样一种观点,即植物——没有大脑——以类似于复杂动物神经系统的方式处理信息。这种想法意味着植物可以感受到快乐、悲伤或痛苦,做出有意的决定,甚至拥有意识。)”可知,植物神经生物学在过去的十年里兴起,这说明该学科思想为小范围的某些科学家所认可,他们认为植物可能拥有意识。故选C。
47.推理判断题。根据第一段中的“This thinking implies that plants could feel happiness or sorrow or pain, make intentional decisions and even possess consciousness. But the chances of that are ‘effectively zero’. ‘There’s nothing in the plant comparable to the complexity of the animal brain,’ says Taiz, from the University of California, Santa Cruz.(这种想法意味着植物可以感受到快乐、悲伤或痛苦,做出有意的决定,甚至拥有意识。但这种可能性‘实际上为零’。加州大学圣克鲁斯分校的Taiz说:‘植物中没有任何东西能与动物大脑的复杂性相媲美。’)”可知,文章指出植物拥有意识的可能性为零,接着讲述Taiz认为植物中没有任何东西能与动物大脑的复杂性相媲美,由此可推测出,他认为指物拥有意识这种观点是不合常理的。故选C。
48.代词指代题。根据画线词前的“help a living being catch a meal”可知,前面说帮助生物抓食物,这里的one指代前文的a meal,表示避免自己成为食物。故选D。
根据第二段最后一句“But beyond the debate over how these studies are conducted, Taiz’s team argues that plant consciousness doesn’t even make sense from an evolutionary point of view.(但除了关于如何进行这些研究的争论之外,Taiz的团队认为,从进化的角度来看,植物意识甚至没有意义。)”和第三段“‘Complicated animal brains advanced in part to help a living being catch a meal and avoid becoming one,’ Taiz says. ‘But plants are rooted to the ground and rely on sunlight for energy, an inactive lifestyle that doesn’t require quick thinking or outsmarting a predator(捕食者) — or the energetically expensive nervous systems that enable those behaviors.’ ‘What use would consciousness be to a plant ’ Taiz asks. ‘If a plant worried and suffered when faced with a threat, it would be wasting so much energy that it wouldn’t have any left to do anything about that threat,’ Taiz says. ‘Furthermore, plants have plenty to do without having to be conscious, too. With sunlight, carbon dioxide and water, plants create the compounds that sustain much of the rest of life on Earth,” Taiz points out.
通读全文,尤其是第一段中的“The last decade saw the rise of the field of ‘plant neurobiology(植物神经生物学)’. (过去的十年见证‘植物神经生物学’领域的兴起。)”和“This thinking implies that plants could feel happiness or sorrow or pain, make intentional decisions and even possess consciousness. But the chances of that are ‘effectively zero’. ‘There’s nothing in the plant comparable to the complexity of the animal brain,’ says Taiz, from the University of California, Santa Cruz.(这种想法意味着植物可以感受到快乐、悲伤或痛苦,做出有意的决定,甚至拥有意识。但这种可能性‘实际上为零’。加州大学圣克鲁斯分校的Taiz说:‘植物中没有任何东西能与动物大脑的复杂性相媲美。’)”可知,新兴起的植物神经生物学认为植物有意识,而加州大学圣克鲁斯分校的Taiz认为这是不可能的,并在下文具体讲述了他的观点。这属于生物学范畴,最有可能出自杂志的科学模块。故选D。
D

A.Because people get upset after comparing the good lives in other people’s posts.

54.What does the underlined part in the last paragraph probably mean

根据第二段中“But when her mother was ready to retire and an opportunity opened for Laqueur to take over the studio, she realized she had no interest in taking on the business side of her art: ‘Owning a studio is a lot of work — financially, logistically. I love the teaching, the choreographing (编舞), the staging, but I didn’t want to own it.’(但当她的母亲准备退休,Laqueur有机会接管工作室时,她意识到自己没有兴趣从事艺术的商业方面的工作:‘拥有一个工作室需要很多工作——从财务上和后勤上。我喜欢这里的教学、编舞和舞台,但我不想拥有它。’)”可知,Laqueur不接管她母亲的工作室是因为她对于经营工作室没有兴趣,她讨厌艺术的商业一面,拥有一家工作室需要付出很多努力——无论是在财务上还是后勤上,故答案为She didn’t have interest in running the studio./She disliked hated the business side of art./Owning a studio is much work-financially, logistically.
根据第三段中“Yet Laqueur’s disinterest in running the studio changed when she became a self-published author.(然而,当Laqueur成为一名自助出版的作家后,她对经营工作室的兴趣发生了变化)”可知,Laqueur成为一名自助出版的作家后对经营工作室的兴趣发生了变化,故答案为Self-publishing her novel(s)./ She became a self-published author./She self-published her novel(s).
划线短语上文“Gradually, readers pay more attention to her works.(渐渐地,读者越来越关注她的作品)”提到,读者越来越关注她的作品,结合划线短语所在句中“In particular(尤其是)”以及“won the grand prize at the 25th Annual Writer’s Digest Self-Published Book Awards, topping more than 2, 300 entries(在第25届《作家文摘》年度自出版图书奖上,从2300多部作品中脱颖而出,获得了大奖)”可知,此处是举例说明她的作品备受关注,stole the show意为“引起人们的关注”,故答案为Attracted/Caught/Captured/Drew people’s attention.
根据最后一段“‘You have to write the most truthful story to you, and I think self-publishing allows that freedom,’ she says, ‘If you work with traditional publishing, it’s more about what’s marketable. There are trade-offs, which everyone will tell you, but by self-publishing I have control of the book, I have control of the story, and I’m cool with that.’(‘你必须为自己写最真实的故事,我认为自助出版允许这种自由,’她说,‘如果你与传统出版合作,更多的是关于什么是有市场的。每个人都会告诉你,这是有利有弊的,但通过自助出版,我可以控制这本书,我可以控制这个故事,我对此很满意。’)”可知,Laqueur喜欢自助出版是因为她有自由写出最真实的故事,可以控制书和故事,不需要考虑市场和权衡,故答案为She has the freedom to write the most truthful story./She has control of the book and the story./She doesn’t have to consider the market and trade-offs.
根据第一段“For most of her life, Suanne Laqueur’s passion for storytelling was shown on the dance floor.(在她生命的大部分时间里,Suanne Laqueur对讲故事的热情都表现在舞池里)”和第三段中“During the process, she realized that following her true passion — telling stories through writing — made the business of the art worthwhile, and owning that business meant she could direct her writing career however she chose.(在这个过程中,她意识到,追随自己真正的热情——通过写作讲故事——让艺术事业变得有价值,拥有这项事业意味着她可以随心所欲地指导自己的写作生涯)”可知,Suanne Laqueur凭借对写作的热情成功地自助出版小说,作品备受关注并获得很多奖项,因此我认为在职业生涯中热情或者兴趣最重要,因为如果我对我的工作有很大的热情,我就会更努力地工作,更有可能成功。 Passion/Interest. If I have a great passion for my job, I will work harder and be more likely to succeed.

My Plans for the Happy Weekend
Our school is accepting plans about the Happy Weekend activity, so I’d like to share my own idea. I recommend a farm field trip. After gathering at the school gate at 8 o’clock, we can set off for a farm nearby by bike to ensure environmental friendliness. Upon arrival, we will learn some basic skills. Then, we will help pick fruits and feed animals. In my opinion, nothing can match the hands-on experience we get from farm activities. We can not only strengthen our sense of responsibility but gain insights into the value of hard work.
