“Belonging is important throughout the lifetime, particularly during life shifts, such as the first year of college.“reported Janine M. Dutcher in Psychological Science. “This connection to the university community is often referred to as ‘school belonging’, which is thought to be the extent to which students feel personally accepted, respected, included, and supported by others in the school social environment.”
A series of three studies were conducted about the research.During each study, students began the term by self-reporting their symptoms (症状) of depression, sense of social fit, and feelings of belonging. Belonging was measured by asking participants to rate one simple statement on a range from 1 to 7: “Today, I feel like I belong at .…(school name).’
In the initial exploratory study of 157 students and the first confirmatory(验证性的) study of 121 students, participants then reported their sense of belonging at the end of each day for one week at the beginning, middle, and end of the term. In the second confirmatory study, 172 students did this reporting for one week at the beginning and end of both the winter and spring terms. During assessment weeks, participants also completed measures of social interaction, social fit, and symptoms of depression four times each day.
In all three studies, students’ feelings of belonging were found to predict their symptoms of depression in advance even after controlling current depression symptoms, social interaction, and feelings of social fit or loneliness. Additionally feelings of loneliness not the number of social interactions that students reported having each day, were also found to predict symptoms of depression.
“College students’ risk of developing depression has been increasing for academic and social reasons in recent years. However, these daily feelings of belonging actually provide an important signal for changes in depressive symptomatology, “ Dutcher wrote. “This could have important implications for interventions to relieve depressive symptoms in first-year university students because early detection of risk can allow for both earlier intervention and more positive preventative strategies.”
24. What does the research mainly focus on
A. The new approaches to relieving depression.
B. The symptoms and prevention of depression.
C. The social interactions between college students.
D. The connection between belonging and depression.
25. What is paragraph 3 mainly about
A. The process of the research. B. The direction of the research.
C. The abilities of the participants. D. The backgrounds of the participants.
26. Which of the following is true about the research
A. Feeling lonely frequently means suffering from depression.
B. The sense of belonging can serve as a predictor of depression.
C. The social interactions determine the symptoms of depression.
D. Controlling current depression symptoms leads to a full recovery.
27. What can we conclude from the last paragraph
A. Depression can be cured easily if detected timely.
B. Depression is unavoidable due to various pressures.
C. Earlier detection makes for the prevention of depression.
D. Students are more likely to develop depression than others.
C
Perhaps you have seen them, those who fall asleep on the subway and then, somehow, wake up exactly at their stop. Perhaps you are one of them. How is this possible We spoke to two doctors, who offered their insights about it.
It is possible that your body gets used to waking up at a certain point each time during your commute, said Dr. Marc I. Leavey, a primary-care specialist in Maryland. That holds especially true if you commute(通勤)at the same time every day. This suggests that if you were to get on at a different time, or if the journey were delayed, your internal clock might not wake you up at your stop. It is an interesting theory, but Dr. Ronald Chervin, director of Michigan Medicine’s Sleep Disorders Centers, does not fully buy it. He is skeptical that circadian rhythms can also explain why you wake up after a brief nap.
You are also likely to wake up for your particular stop because of an oral cue, such as the conductor stating the name of the subway stop over the public-address system. Such cues alert your brain that you have arrived, explained Dr Leavey. According to a study published in the Public Library of Science, during sleep, our brain reacts differently when we hear our own name and other people’s names, noted Dr Chervin. This suggests that your brain does not turn off during sleep, which makes it possible to pick up on the announcement of your stop.
Another reasonable possibility: You may wake up at each stop, check if it is yours, and go back to sleep, all without having remembered it, added Dr. Chervin. He sees this in cases where patients are suffering from sleep apnea(窒息). They may wake up as many as 200 times during a single night, without having remembered a single instance. That’s because they fall right back asleep before their brain has time to process their experience into long-term memory. Similarly, you could be waking up every time you hear a new stop called. But you just don’t remember such instances even after you fully come awake for your stop—leading you to believe that you have slept the whole way through and miraculously woken up at the right time.
28. According to Dr Leavey, which of the following might wake you up at your stop
A. Sense of time. B. Sleep apnea. C. Internal clock. D. Oral communication.
29. What does the underlined expression “doesn’t fully buy it” in Paragraph 2 mean
A He can’t agree more. B. He can’t catch it well.
C. He doesn’t like it at all. D. He doesn’t totally believe it.
30. How will our brain react when we hear our name called during sleep
A. Actively. B. Passively. C. Differently. D. Casually.
31. How does Dr. Chervin explain his findings in the last paragraph
A. By introducing a concept. B. By making a comparison.
C. By using an expert’s words. D. By referring to another study.
D
Coral reefs (珊瑚礁) are filled with a diverse range of fish. Some fish are more beautiful to humans than others, and many people firmly believe that beautiful fish deserve more conservation than the uglier species. Is the “firm belief” true You can get the answer from a new paper published in the journal PLOS Biology.
Researchers showed 481 photographs of ray-finned reef fish to 13,000 members of the public. With that data, they then trained a computer model to generate predictions for an additional 4,400 photographs of 2,417 of the most common reef fish species. They next compared the aesthetic(美学的)rating of each species with other characteristics, including evolutionary history, distinctiveness(独特性) from other fish, conservation status and importance to fisheries.
After analyzing the numbers, researchers found that the fish humans rated as the most beautiful tended to be less ecologically and evolutionarily distinct. Prettier fish were also more likely to be listed as species of “least concern” on the International Union for Conservation of Nature(IUCN) Red List.
On the contrary, the fish that humans found to be the least attractive were the most ecologically and evolutionarily distinct, and they were more likely to be listed as “threatened” on the IUCN Red List. Unattractive species also tended to be more important to commercial fisheries, which put them at higher risk for overfishing.
“The less attractive species have the highest ecological distinctiveness, and thus provide the highest diversity of ecological functions,” they write in the paper. “We need to pay more attention to the extinction(灭绝)risk of the less attractive fish species, or that might have overlooked effects on reef ecosystem functioning.”
“Therefore, to minimize the impact of aesthetic biases(偏见), scientists, conservation groups and policymakers may need to change how they communicate about wildlife,” the researchers write. “Making people more aware of the roles uglier fish play in reef ecosystems could help them gain more support.”
32. What did the researchers do for their research
A. They rated all the photos on their own. B. They hunted for reef fish in coral reefs.
C. They stayed underwater to monitor fish. D. They used a computer to predict ratings.
33. What does the researchers’ analysis suggest
A. The research is a failure. B. Fish’s role in nature is equal.
C. The “firm belief” isn’t true. D. Uglier fish are less important.
34. What is the researchers’ advice
A. Educating people on uglier fish’s ecological importance.
B. Making an attempt to raise people’s aesthetic levels.
C. Raising awareness about the appearance of uglier fish.
D. Building natural reserves worldwide for uglier fish.
35. What might be the best title for the text
A. Coral Reefs Rely on Various Fish B. Uglier Fish Need More Protection
C. Uglier Fish Are Facing Extinction D. Aesthetic Biases Put Reefs in Danger

根据第二段中“It is possible that your body gets used to waking up at a certain point each time during your commute, said Dr. Marc I. Leavey, a primary-care specialist in Maryland. That holds especially true if you commute at the same time every day. This suggests that if you were to get on at a different time, or if the journey were delayed, your internal clock might not wake you up at your stop. (马里兰州的初级保健专家Marc I. Leavey医生说,有可能你的身体已经习惯了在通勤途中每次的特定时间醒来。如果你每天都在同一时间通勤,这一点尤其正确。 这表明,如果你在不同的时间上车,或者旅途被延误,你的生物钟可能不会在你到站时叫醒你)”可知,Leavey医生认为生物钟可能会在你到站时叫醒你。故选C。
【29题详解】
句意猜测题。根据画线词后文“He is skeptical that circadian rhythms can also explain why you wake up after a brief nap.”
根据第三段中“According to a study published in the Public Library of Science, during sleep, our brain reacts differently when we hear our own name and other people’s names, noted Dr Chervin. This suggests that your brain does not turn off during sleep, which makes it possible to pick up on the announcement of your stop.( Chervin博士指出,根据发表在《科学公共图书馆》上的一项研究,在睡眠期间,当我们听到自己的名字和别人的名字时,大脑的反应是不同的。这表明你的大脑在睡觉时并没有停止工作,这使得你有可能听到你停下来的通知)”可知,当我们在睡眠中听到自己的名字时,我们的大脑会有积极的反应。故选A。
根据最后一段中“He sees this in cases where patients are suffering from sleep apnea. They may wake up as many as 200 times during a single night, without having remembered a single instance. That’s because they fall right back asleep before their brain has time to process their experience into long-term memory. Similarly, you could be waking up every time you hear a new stop called. Is the “firm belief” true (对人类来说,有些鱼比其他鱼更美丽,许多人坚信,美丽的鱼比丑陋的物种更值得保护。这个“坚定的信念”是真的吗?)”以及第四段“On the contrary, the fish that humans found to be the least attractive were the most ecologically and evolutionarily distinct, and they were more likely to be listed as “threatened” on the IUCN Red List. Unattractive species also tended to be more important to commercial fisheries, which put them at higher risk for overfishing.(相反,人类发现的最不吸引人的鱼类在生态和进化上是最独特的,它们更有可能被列入世界自然保护联盟红色名录的“威胁”。不具吸引力的物种对商业渔业也更为重要,这使它们面临着更高的过度捕捞风险)”可知,人们认为美丽的鱼应该受到更多的保护,但是研究分析表明并非如此。由此可推断,这个“坚定的观点”并不对。故选C。

Text 2
W: What are you taking this year 889294:fId:889294
M: Mostly literature courses.
W: Oh, really. Are they any good
M: Some of them are. Except for Professor Scott's class. I mean, the books are interesting, and the lectures are great, but his tests are so hard.
Text 3
M: Are you ready to order
W: Yes, I'd like to start with the salad, please.
M: Okay. And what would you like for your main dish
W: Hmm. I'll have the steak. And I'd like some chocolate ice cream for dessert.

W: How is the jacket, sir
M: It feels a little too tight around the chest. What do you think
W: Well, that style is designed to be form fitting. I think it suits you.
M: Hmm. The price is right, but I can't imagine wearing it for very long. Can you bring a larger one

M: Well, I'm not too bad. I had this really awful cold with a temperature, which took about a week to get rid of. Fortunately it's over now. But I injured my foot playing basketball yesterday and I need to have an operation on it Friday. It's nothing serious, though. I'll be back at fitness training very soon.
W: Oh good! Well, you take care then.
Text 7

W: Well, I know the computing conference is for three days but actually I want to attend on Friday and Saturday only. Will that work out to be any cheaper
M: Let me have a look. Well, you could register for the two days separately, but that wouldn't actually save you very much as it still costs each day. In fact, if you could register for the three days, you also get an invitation to a free dinner on Saturday night, so that's probably the better option.
W: Right, I'll do that. How much will the fees be in that case
M: It's $75. QRRUE :uId: QRRUE
W: All right. I'd like to register for the full three days. Now, can I pay that by credit card
M: I'm afraid not. You'll have to send a cheque to us, or you can pay in cash at the conference office.
W: Fine. So it's probably the easiest if I pay by cheque. How about accommodation I guess that's not included in the price
M: No, I'm sorry, but there's a very reasonable guest house which is $25 per night. And I think that includes your breakfast. But If you're interested you'll need to book soon, because there's always a heavy demand for them.
W:OK. I'd book for 2 nights. Is it close to the conference center
M: It'd be about a ten minute walk away from here.
