China's top animator Tian Xiaopeng and his animation studio announced that they will be producing the much-anticipated live action film, The Three-Body Problem, based on the award-winning sci-fi novel by Chinese writer Liu Cixin.
Tian created China's 3-D animation milestone Monkey King: Hero Is Back in 2015. It grossed (获利) 956 million yuan in China, becoming the highest-grossing Chinese animation in the country's film history at that time. During Spring Festival in 2019, Guo Fan's The Wandering Earth, a film also based on a novel by Liu Cixin, had made over 4. 6 billion yuan at the box office domestically. 1. Tian created China's 3-D animation milestone Monkey King: Hero Is Back in 2015. It grossed 956 million yuan in China, becoming the highest-grossing Chinese animation in the country's film history at that time."
Some expressed doubt about a studio that specializes in animation making a live-action movie."

Since the growth of online streaming services like Netflix, subtitling (加字幕) has become something of an art.
Subtitles started out as an accessibility feature for deaf audiences, and to translate foreign language films into your own. Of course, it's not just deaf audiences that subtitles help. The translated subtitles of foreign films are great for learning languages, letting you read and hear how it's pronounced at the same time. Movie subtitles are written ahead of time, but subtitling for live TV has to be done in the moment as the person is speaking, so mistakes are likely to happen. But because subtitles can be everything, from monster squelches (扑哧声) to bombs exploding, it's a great way to learn many things, such as new adjectives.
Subtitler Karli Witkowska explained how her choice of adjective creates emotion for the audience. Karli belongs to a team of subtitlers who try to make their descriptions as close as possible to the sounds they hear. Karli bases her descriptions on the film's type. The sound effects needed for a thriller like Strange Things-creaking (吱嘎) stairs and sudden screams-are very different from the sounds used in historical period dramas. This influences the adjective Karli chooses to describe a sound. For example, light-hearted and cheerful music might be described as jaunty-full of energy and confidence.
Another time, her team found exactly the right expression "gobsmacked silence". In this scene, the characters were about to gasp-take in a short, sudden, and quick breath of air without speech or sound in the scene, you are able to tell people that atmosphere. "So when my colleague came up with that one, I definitely gave him a big thumb-up", she said.
In fact, the phrase "gobsmacked silence" is so good that it goes viral (走红) and is being used in all kinds of situations.
5.What does the writer want to convey about subtitling in Paragraph 2
A.It helps solve learning problems.
B.It helps people to stay concentrated.
C.It can be important and challenging.
D.It improves ability of understanding.
6.Which emotion does "gobsmacked silence" possibly express
A.Sad. B.Hopeful. C.Disappointed. D.Surprised.
7.What does Karli think of her teammate's work
A.It needs improving. B.It's well done.
C.It makes her speechless. D.It's very popular.
8.Which of the following statement will Karli possibly agree with
A.Subtitling is difficult but fashionable.
B.Subtitlers are often some strange persons.
C.Subtitlers are those who create new words.
D.Subtitling involves translating sounds accurately.
【答案】5.C
6.D
7.B
8.D

Subtitles started out as an accessibility feature for deaf audiences, and to translate foreign language films into your own. Of course, it's not just deaf audiences that subtitles help. The translated subtitles of foreign films are great for learning languages, letting you read and hear how it's pronounced at the same time. Movie subtitles are written ahead of time, but subtitling for live TV has to be done in the moment as the person is speaking, so mistakes are likely to happen. But because subtitles can be everything, from monster squelches (扑哧声) to bombs exploding, it's a great way to learn many things, such as new adjectives.
Another time, her team found exactly the right expression "gobsmacked silence". In this scene, the characters were about to gasp-take in a short, sudden, and quick breath of air without speech or sound in the scene, you are able to tell people that atmosphere.
So when my colleague came up with that one, I definitely gave him a big thumb-up", she said.
Karli belongs to a team of subtitlers who try to make their descriptions as close as possible to the sounds they hear. Karli bases her descriptions on the film's type.

The first commercial film with sound came out in 1927. 18. Even back in the early days of silent films, most movie theatres hired a musician or a group of musicians to provide music, mostly to drown out the sound of the film projectors(放映机) and people talking.
As sound-on-film technology developed, composers were hired to create original music for films. Like music written for an opera, film music serves to advance the story and the action. 19. In the same way, a film composer needs to support the screenplay's storyline. The music also needs to reflect the screenplay's mood, which includes everything from the action on the screen to sound effects to dialogue.
Music has a language of its own. The right piece of music can improve and sometimes even change a viewer's ideas of what is taking place onscreen. Most of the time, music is used to stress the action onscreen, improve the mood of a scene, foreshadow action that is about to take place or even show the emotion of a character. 20. But in many instances the emotional power of the visuals would not be as great were it not for the music.
 21. Ask yourself, "How would this scene feel if the music were different Is the composer trying to tell me how I should feel Or are they merely pushing me in an emotional direction "
A. So, how is the film music created
B. Without it, it would be hard to imagine the scene.
C. An opera composer must follow the text of the opera.
D. Usually, composers and filmmakers don't want to overshadow a film.
E. So the next time you watch a movie, pay close attention to the music.

Hollywood Producers Look to Chinese Culture
An increasing number of Hollywood producers
have in recent years released film posters for Chinese audiences, showing their
attention to the country's film market. The film posters are
typically drawn in a traditional Chinese style, including Chinese cultural
features and emphasizing Chinese landscape paintings, historic landmarks and so
on.
China's movie box office revenue increased
by nine percent in 2018, according to the State Film Administration.
Foreign films
account for almost half of all movies in the Chinese market, but their earning
power is not as strong as it once was.
"The Chinese film industry has gained
momentum(动力)in recent years, and its box office performance is quite
impressive. More
and more foreign filmmakers have paid attention to the domestic market, and the
combination of Chinese and Western elements in film publicity is a clever idea
to attract viewers, " said Zhang Chengguang, an Anhui Normal University
professor.
Chinese paper-cutting, or jianzhi, is a kind of folk art that uses
scissors or knives to cut paper for decorations and other folk activities.
Paper-cutting
artwork is always made with red paper, as red is associated with festivities
and happiness in Chinese culture, which symbolizes luck and happiness.
The posters
for animated superhero films KungFuPanda
3 and Spider-Man: IntotheSpider-Verse give us great examples of Chinese
paper-cutting, right in time for the Spring Festival.
WaterMargin, JourneytotheWest,
RomanceoftheThreeKingdoms and DreamoftheRedChamber are four novels that form the core of Chinese classical
literature and still inform modern culture. As with the works of Dante or
Shakespeare in Europe, these books are touchstones in Chinese literary culture,
and are never-ending resources for Chinese film and TV adaptations and
recreations. Kung fu masters appear regularly in these novels, which have
influenced a number of Western superhero films and their promotional posters.
Many critics consider landscape painting to
be the highest form of Chinese art, and the most popular form to display
Chinese culture to the West. Chinese
landscape painting refers to a style of traditional Chinese painting that
involves or describes scenery or natural landscapes, using brushes and ink
rather than more conventional paints. Many Western filmmakers therefore
choose to launch film posters set against the backdrop of Chinese landscape
paintings, catching a sense of elegance and oriental beauty.
Chinese landmarks continue to welcome more
and more visitors. These
landmarks, in a certain sense, represent the best of Chinese history and
culture. Spider-Man
has taken photos with iconic Chinese
skyscrapers and at historic scenic spots—places known by almost everyone in
China. The posters will
become a selling point for the film Spider-Man: Homecoming, with
people perhaps wondering what's going on with Spider-Man and famous Chinese
landmarks before buying their tickets.

At 98, Dick Van Dyke still sings with his group, The Vantastix, and still makes it all look easy. When asked how important it is that he's having fun when he's doing it, Van Dyke replied, "My whole career has relied on that. It's such a blessing to find a way of making a living that you love.
F. The music in a film makes you cheer for the hero and cry at the drama.
